Atualmente, o maior leque de opções de investimento bem como a incerteza e o risco a eles associado são, de fato, uma realidade. Portanto a necessidade de conhecer e ter acesso ao máximo de informação possível sobre uma empresa e o ambiente onde se insere é, cada vez mais, uma ferramenta imprescindível no momento da decisão de investir. Este Equity Research, sobre a empresa Nokia Corporation, tem como finalidade servir este mesmo propósito. Este trabalho pretende apresentar uma análise clara e profunda da situação do setor tecnológico em questão, da evolução da performance da empresa nos últimos anos e do seu ambiente interno e externo. Descreve também a sua capacidade de resposta ao momento atual que atravessa e, por fim, realiza a avaliação da empresa com base nos fluxos de caixa futuros possivelmente gerados pela empresa. Fornecer uma recomendação bem fundamentada e estruturada sobre a ação da Nokia, a todos os investidores interessados na empresa, é o objetivo final deste relatório.
Nowadays, the wider range of investment options, as well as the uncertainty and risk associated with them are, in fact, a reality. Therefore the need to have knowledge and access to as much information as possible on a company and the environment where it operates is, increasingly, an essential tool when making a decision to invest. This Equity Research, about Nokia Corporation, intends to meet this purpose. This essay seeks to present a clear and thorough analysis on the situation of the technological sector, the evolution of the company’s performance over the last years and of its internal and external environment. It also describes the ability of the company to face the current moment and, finally, makes the evaluation of the company based on future cash flows being generated by it. Providing a structured and well-founded recommendation about Nokia´s shares, to all the interested investors, is the final goal of this report.

Abstract:
Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli etsiä Nokian puhelinliiketoiminnasta se ajanjakso, jolloin lopullinen käänne huonompaan alkoi. Tässä tutkimuksessa analysoitiin Nokiassa suoritettuja strategisia päätöksiä, etsien keskeisiä syitä yrityksen puhelinliiketoiminnan kokemiin vaikeuksiin 2000-luvun lopulla ja 2010-luvulla. Nokian puhelinliiketoiminnasta julkaisemat vuosiraportit sekä tiedotteet auttoivat tätä tutkimusta vastaamaan tutkimukselle asetettuun kysymykseen. Lisäksi siinä auttoivat Nokian puhelimien käyttötestit, käyttäjien kokemukset, sekä tilastoaineistot Nokian puhelinmyynneistä. Tämän tutkimuksen teoreettinen malli toteutettiin sisällönanalyysin avulla, keräämällä ensin riittävä määrä teoreettista aineistoa, hajottamalla se pienempiin osiin, jonka jälkeen tietomäärästä koostettiin täysin uudenlainen kokonaisuus. Tässä tutkimuksessa käytettiin laadullista, kvalitatiivista sisällönanalyysiä. Tämän tutkimuksen mukaan Nokia nousi 1990-luvun lopulta 2000-luvun alun markkinajohtajaksi investoimalla voimakkaasti uusiin teknologioihin. Tässä tutkimuksessa havaittiin Nokian olleen kilpailijoitaan nopeampi useissa suurissa puhelinliiketoiminnan murrosvaiheissa. Tämä tutkimus koki kyseisten muutosten olleen osa digitaalista yhteenliittymistä. Nokian onnistui tämän tutkimuksen mukaan kehittämään disruptiivisia innovaatioita, joilla se kasvatti puhelinmyyntiään uusilla ja kehittyvillä markkinoilla. Nokia menestyi 2000-luvun lopulla tämän tutkimuksen mukaan tuottamalla useita uusia innovaatioita. Tämä tutkimus havaitsi Nokian puhelinliiketoiminnan alamäen alkaneen kiihtyä vuosien 2008 ja 2011 välillä, johtuen useista samanaikaisista negatiivisista tapahtumista. Vuosien 2008 ja 2010 välillä Nokian useissa uusissa älypuhelimissa tämä tutkimus havaitsi merkittäviä puutteita. Niiden tämä tutkimus havaitsi olleen kuluttajille negatiivinen signaali Nokian tuotteiden laadusta. Tämä tutkimus havaitsi lisäksi Nokian epäonnistuneen Ovi mobiilikaupan kehitystyön suhteen vuosina 2007–2009. Lisäksi tämä tutkimus havaitsi Nokian epäonnistuneen Nseries-malleillaan vuosivälillä 2008–2010. Nokian johto teki tämän tutkimuksen mukaan väärän strategisen valinnan siirtyessään käyttämään Windowsin laitealustaa alkuvuodesta 2011. Sillä estettiin tämän tutkimuksen mukaan Nokian mahdollisuus menestyä vuodesta 2011 eteenpäin. Tämä tutkimus kuvasi Nokiaa puhelinliiketoiminnan merkittävänä kehittäjänä ja menestyjänä. Nokian ongelmien tämä tutkimus havaitsi tapahtuneen suhteellisen pienellä aikajaksolla.

A constante necessidade de inovação no setor tecnológico é uma grande condicionante para o sucesso de uma empresa desse sector. A Microsoft, uma das maiores empresas do setor, tem ficado para trás dos seus principais concorrentes (Apple e Samsung), não beneficiando das novas tendências de mercado: móvel e cloud. Esta necessidade de inovar, aliada à turbulência financeira que estamos a viver, levaram a Microsoft a reagir e aproveitar a oportunidade de adquirir o segmento de telemóveis da Nokia. Para o fazer, a Microsoft predispôs-se a pagar $9,500 milhões pelo segmento de "Devices and Services". Fusões e aquisições são consideradas uma das melhores formas para as empresas aumentarem o valor para os seus acionistas, apesar das dificuldades inerentes ao processo. O objetivo deste projeto é compreender as motivações por trás do negócio, do ponto de vista da Microsoft, estimar as possíveis sinergias e avaliar a empresa que resultou desta aquisição.
The constant need for innovation in the technology sector is a major drive for a company?s success. Microsoft, one of the largest companies in the sector was lagging behind its competitors (such as Apple and Samsung), not being able to benefit from new market trends: mobile and cloud. The need to innovate, alongside the financial turmoil we are living in, led Microsoft to react and seize the opportunity to acquire Nokia?s phone segment. To do that, Microsoft paid Nokia $9,500 million for its "Devices and Services" segment. Mergers and Acquisitions are considered one of the best forms for companies to achieve value growth for their shareholders despite the inherent difficulties. The goal of this project is to understand the motivations behind the deal (from Microsoft's perspective), evaluate the possible synergies, and perform a valuation of the company that resulted from this acquisition.

Abstract:
The commercial mobile phone industry is a relatively new one. Starting out in the 1980s, it has proliferated in both numbers and in terms of technology. The last decade saw a sharp increase in both the number of subscribers and the amount of services which was offered by mobile devices. In order to keep up with this fast evolution of the industry, phones have started to get much more complicated and ‘smarter’ due to the software which is used to run these phones. Multi touch screen menus, High Definition video playback, multi megapixel cameras and a plethora of connectivity options are just some of the features a consumer takes for granted in his/her new mobile device. In order to provide these services to the user the software inside the phone has gotten complex to the scale of becoming its own Operating System much akin to the Operating Systems used on personal computers. These mobile operating systems contain millions of lines of software code and cost a lot of money to maintain and develop. Moreover having a popular operating system benefits the organization as it draws in many developers who can write applications which run on this operating system and also develop services which are specific to the operating systems. Having these services generate revenue for the network operators who get to bill the consumers for using the services or for the data which has been transferred to and from these mobile phones via the operator’s network. Nokia’s dominant market share in the smartphone market entails that it holds a near 40% share with its smartphone operating systems. Gradually the company has been moving towards opening up its previously proprietary operating systems to the public in the form of Open Source Software, where everyone is able to view, share, distribute and contribute to the software code. This strategy change has been taking place over the last couple of years and continues under an overall change of direction and focus which is taking place in the company. This thesis work relates as to what exactly is the current placement of Nokia in the economic and mobile devices market and how the company has been adapting to the challenges it has been facing at the hands of both old and new rivals who have been coming with innovative ideas in order to topple over Nokia from its throne of being the biggest mobile phone maker in the world. The thesis first looks at exactly what is Open Source Software. From there it gradually moves to do comparisons between closed and Open Source Software in order to give the reader an idea as to what are the pros and cons of each. In the second half of the thesis a snapshot of the current market situation and competitors is given in order to understand the environment in which Nokia has been working and developing its strategy in. Later on the thesis goes in depth about the decisions, their triggers and their implications with regards to Nokia and the use of Open Source Software as a strategy in this changing environment.

Digitalization in the modern economy creates a productivity platform that is regarded by many experts and researchers as the 4th industrial revolution. The dramatic increase of the project management related software development, combined with the decreasing costs of these solutions, have spurred a remarkable interest in these digital PM-solutions reducing the gap between the theory and practice of project management. The selection process of a feasible digital project management solution can be a highly demanding task for any organization regardless of the field it operates in. The aim of this study is to define the concept of project management digitalization, but also to evaluate how project management work can be further developed and supported by digital project management solutions. This research has a qualitative nature, and it is a empiria driven inductive case study, supported by a literature review. As a part of the case study, project management experts within the Supply Chain Engineering (SCE) -unit of Nokia have been interviewed. The empirical case study consists of a current state analysis and requirement specification of project management in Nokia MN/BM/SCE, but also from a comprehensive feasibility study of three state-of-art digital project management solutions available in the markets: JIRA, HP PPM and MS POL. A digitalization proposal was given for the case company on how to proceed in the project management digitalization journey, and what commercial solutions need to be taken in use. These digital PM-solutions can support project planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, but also make projects more predictable and manageable in terms of schedule, costs and quality. This study is strongly tied to recent development trends in the web- and cloud-based Project Management Information Systems (PMIS) and Decisions Support Systems (DSS), that set the basis for defining the new concept of project management digitalization. Several theoretical and business managerial conclusions can be drawn based on this study, that support the project management digitalization pursues of various organizations. Thus, most of the conclusions and results of this study can be exploited in organizations operating in other industries as well, especially when the target is in initiating the project management digitalization journey.

To become successful in China is a challenge not every international company can cope with. The competition is cruel as everyone struggle for a larger piece of share. Some manage to find the “secret” formula, others simply are left behind. Still, the market is too big to be neglected and extremely unpredictable to be easily handled. Nokia has proved to be foreseeing and wise enough to not only enter that market, but also climb up the ladder of success and stay there for a decade. This work aims to give a clear and thorough picture of Nokia’s successful strategy in penetrating the Chinese market. It follows and explains the steps Nokia took back in the days in building strong brand awareness and thousands of loyal customers in the face of the Chinese consumer. Its purpose is not only to tell the story of success, but also to teach important lesson future investors and perhaps give a precious insight into the topic. The Chinese market needs to be studied and analyzed as well in order to build a better understanding for it. We need to find out how they feel, what they think and what factors influence their behavior and finally how to approach them. A series of different research methods like secondary data, personal and group interviews, and online survey will be used here. The approach in this study will be inductive, where specific theory will be developed based on research.

In recent years the study of entrepreneurial spinoffs has focused on how knowledge spillover leads to new knowledge and entrepreneurial activity. This study aims to explore the effect of a founder’s knowledge inherited from an incumbent parent company in the formation of a spinoff in the ICT sector. As a theoretical framework, the study uses An Absorptive Capacity Theory of Knowledge Spillover Entrepreneurship (Qian and Acs, 2013). Using a qualitative approach through interviews with the founder of the spinoff, this study aims to strengthen the empirical validity of these theories in a single setting. The proposed findings are strongly in line with the theory, but a certain aspect considering the help from a parent company proposes a possibility to modify the framework into a particularized framework that can be implicated to various spinoffs globally. Thus, the findings suggest that entrepreneurial activity deriving through absorptive capacity and inherited knowledge is affected by the contributions from the parent company.

Many of us can relate to being tired and maybe even feel down during the winter months. Reports show that we spend more and more time indoors and with that, problems linked to low daylight exposure increases. The main recommendation from doctors is to try to spend more time outdoors to really get that dosage of the sun that one needs. Research also shows that people are not aware of the actual amount of time they spend either indoors or in their cars.  With this in mind, what could we do to create a healthier way of living?  In this project, I have chosen to explore how we can motivate and inspire people with a sensitivity to light to spend more time outdoors and help them stimulate their circadian rhythm. People that suffer from symptoms could in worst cases not even leave their bed making them unable to cope with their life. Using natural ways of changing habits could in most cases have a better effect than what heavy medication does.

L’objectif de cette thèse est de décrire, de comprendre et d’expliquer les conditions facilitant et/ou limitant le développement de la ressource connaissance entre les membres d’une équipe de projet. Nous adoptons une approche systémique et nous nous inspirons du Star Model de Galbraith (1973 ; 2002) pour bâtir notre propre modèle « design de l’organisation apprenante ». Une étude de cas longitudinale au sein d’une multinationale en pleine fusion avec un ancien concurrent a été réalisée. Notre analyse du management des connaissances dans trois situations organisationnelles contrastées (avant la fusion, pendant la fusion et post fusion) concernant les mêmes équipes projet exerçant les mêmes métiers conduit à des résultats à la fois convergents et divergents avec ceux décrits dans la littérature, donnant lieu à des résultats ambivalents. Cette ambivalence a été analysée à travers des modalités différentes de la notion de culture : nationale, organisationnelle et professionnelle
The objective of this thesis was to describe, understand, and explain the conditions facilitating and/or limiting the development of knowledge as a resource between members of a project team. We use a systemic approach to build a new model – called "Design of the learning organization" (Design de l’Organisation Apprenante) – based on Galbraith’s Star Model (Galbraith 1973; 2002). A longitudinal case study was performed within a multinational organization during a merger with one of its competitors. Our analysis of knowledge management in three contrasting organizational situations (before the merger, during the merger, and post merger) on the same project teams performing the same jobs leads to results both convergent and divergent with those described in the literature, giving rise to ambivalent results. This ambivalence has been analyzed through different modalities of the concept of culture: national, organizational, and professional

As empresas socialmente responsáveis consideram na sua gestão ações que permitem estabelecer um comportamento social e ambiental que atendam as diversas expectativas da sociedade e as pressões e choques dos stakeholders para que essas adotem um comportamento socioambiental, tem se tornado cada vez mais frequente, promovendo uma nova forma de pensar e agir dos gestores. As divergências de entendimento e avaliação relacionadas a esse comportamento têm gerado inúmeras discussões principalmente quanto ao consenso a respeito de quanta atenção deve ser concedida a essas pressões e quais ferramentas são oportunas para mensurar tal comportamento. Com isso, as empresas tentam encontrar premissas que promovam as dimensões sociais elevando-as à mesma categoria das ambientais, a partir do uso de ferramentas que avaliam seu comportamento socioambiental. Com o intuito de identificar esse comportamento, considerando que o seu comportamento socioambiental pode ser uma ação ou reação, frente às pressões ou choques dos stakeholders, faz-se importante desenvolver procedimentos de avaliação dos impactos das ações sociais e ambientais. Em geral, a identificação do comportamento socioambiental das empresas permite aos gestores realizar uma tomada de decisão mais eficaz frente às pressões dos seus stakeholders. Baseando-se nesse pressuposto, foi possível elaborar uma proposta de modelo sustentado nas dimensões do comportamento social e ambiental dos modelos ECP-Social e Triplo, permitindo identificar os estágios do comportamento socioambiental das empresas. A aplicação do modelo na empresa Nokia do Brasil pertencente ao segmento eletroeletrônico, tornou possível constatar a importância de análises das ações socioambientais que permitem identificar o comportamento socioambiental e comprovar que esse pode ser uma ação ou reação frente às pressões dos stakeholders

This report initiates a BUY recommendation for Nokian Tyres Plc, with a 2020YE price target of €31.15/sh using a Discounted Cash Flow model (DCF) and the Free Cash Flow to the Firm method. This valuation implies a 18.02% upside potential from the 30th of October of 2020 share closing price of €26.39, considering a medium risk assessment.

Portability of the Internet of Things Solutions is important in today’s society. This is due to the rapid growth of smart devices. More and more companies are choosing to use cloud services for data storage and processing. Halmstad Stadsnät AB is developing and communicating the IoT-platform and using the current state of Nokia IMPACT. The problem with IMPACT is that it does not fully support End-toend solutions. Therefore, Halmstad Stadsnät AB explores other possibilities for IoT-solutions when it comes to software. Microsoft AZURE is a platform that Halmstad Kommun uses for IT-solutions. The overall goal of this project is to test the portability of Microsoft AZURE’s IoT-solutions on IMPACTplatforms. The methods used have created an End-to-end solution for AZURE and then step by step test to transfer it to IMPACT. The project concludes that portability between these two platforms is good, but it requires certain adjustments when transferring
Portabilitet av internet of things lösningar är i dagens samhälle nödvändig. Detta pågrund av den snabba tillväxten av bärbara datorenheter. Allt fler företag väljer att använda molntjänster för lagring och bearbetning av data. Halmstad Kommun håller på att utveckla en kommuntäckande IoT-plattform och använder sig i dagsläget av Nokia IMPACT. Problemet med IMPACT är att den inte har fullt stöd för End-to-end lösningar. Därför undersöker Stadsnätet andra möjligheter för IoT-lösning när det kommer till mjukvara. Microsoft AZURE är en plattform som Halmstad kommun använder för IT lösningar. De övergripande målet med det här projektet är att testa portabiliteten för Microsoft AZUREs IoTlösnignar på IMPACT-plattformen. De metoder som använts har varit att skapa en End-to-end lösning för AZURE och sedan steg för steg testa att överföra den till IMPACT. Slutsatsen av projektet är att portabilitet mellan dessa två plattformar är god, men dock krävs vissa åtgärder vid överföring.

Indústrias de TIC (Tecnologia de Informação e Comunicações), antes separadas, começam a mesclar-se, pouco a pouco, dificultando a delimitação de fronteiras entre os participantes que, de competidores, em muitas situações, passam à condição de parceiros, com vistas à complementação de recursos e de competências. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo a verificação da adequação da estratégia da Nokia Smart Devices à indústria de telefonia móvel, considerando suas alianças e a estratégia competitiva global. A investigação foi conduzida com o uso da metodologia de estudo de caso. Múltiplas fontes de evidência foram utilizadas para permitirem a convergência triangular dos dados. A interpretação e a análise dos dados foram realizadas com auxílio do referencial teórico identificado, e baseadas no Global Strategic Network Analysis – SNA – framework, de Macedo-Soares (2011). Os resultados da pesquisa apontam a presença de ameaças que desafiam a liderança de empresas, muitas vezes tidas como sólidas. O entendimento das implicações estratégicas dos fatores macroambientais (estruturais e relacionais) e dos fatores organizacionais é fundamental para a composição de uma estratégia consistente, capaz de alavancar as forças criadas pela organização ou pela rede, ou de minimizar as fraquezas, com o propósito de aproveitar as oportunidades oferecidas pelo ambiente, e, ainda, de mitigar as ameaças, na busca pela geração de vantagem competitiva.
The mobile phone sector is among the most dynamic and complex business environment. ICT (Information and Communication Technology) industries, which were, to date, treated in a separated way, gradually start to converge, so that the boundaries among the participants thereof become hardly identifiable. In some cases, the members undertake the role of competitors and, in other occasions, they act as strategic partners, aiming at the complementation of resources and competencies. The present research intends to verify the adequacy of Nokia Smart Devices strategy to the Mobile Phone industry, considering its alliances and the global competitive strategy. The work adopted the case study methodology. For the collection of the required data, multiple sources and means to were used in accordance with the strategy of data and method triangulation, so as to ensure results consistency. Data interpretation and analysis were carried out in the light of the research s theoretical references and pursuant to the Global Strategic Network Analysis – SNA framework, by Macedo-Soares (2011). The results point out the presence of threats that challenge companies leadership which may sometimes be considered as very solid organizations. The correct comprehension of strategic implications of macroenvironmental (structural and relational) and organizational factors is fundamental to a correct and consistent strategy composition, that may leverage the strengths generated by the organization and its network, or even minimize the weaknesses, in order to benefit from opportunities offered by the sector while and to mitigate the threats there from, while reaching a competitive edge.

The development of research activities in subsidiaries of multinationals may be a component of their global strategy for entering new markets, by aggregating local characteristics to the products of these companies. Following this strategy, global companies would reuse some of the technologies developed in the headquarter but are also capable of generating patents through projects of R&D (Research and Development) conducted in subsidiaries. This study analyzed the process of capacity development in a dynamic R&D subsidiary, the Nokia Institute of Technology (INdT), located in Manaus (Brazil). The analysis is conducted through the framework of dynamic capabilities because there it was identified a constant process of reconfiguration of resources and expertise was designed to enable INdT to execute R&D activities in an extremely dynamic market, telecommunications. Moreover, this is considered an exploratory study, since there are still relatively rare references regarding similar subsidiaries in Brazil who have reached a significant intellectual production and global. The study used the model of dynamic capabilities to evaluate the process of organizational learning, based on the works of Teece and Zollo (2002) and Pisano (2000) that aim to study the leraning through the R&D activities performed by INdT. Then it s studied the network of partnerships established by the Institute with universities and companies, assessing how this collaboration network relates to the process of organizational learning. Finally, it s analyzed the information exchange with the matrix, trying to understand what knowledge transfer strategies were adopted. This study identified several activities designed to deliberately reconfigure internal resources and intellectual assets INdT in order to enable it to learn new technologies and execute P&D projects involving these technologies. The analysis of the various dimensions of learning revealed that there was a complex process of evolution of skills, involving parallel initiatives and possibly unrelated to each other, demonstrating the variety of possible ways to boost learning, consolidate dynamic capabilities and enable innovation
O desenvolvimento de atividades de pesquisa em subsidiárias de transnacionais pode ser um componente da estratégia global para inserção em novos mercados, através da agregação de características locais aos produtos dessas empresas. Seguindo essa estratégia, algumas empresas globais reutilizariam parte das tecnologias desenvolvidas na matriz mas seriam também capazes de gerar patentes através de projetos de P&D (Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento) conduzidos nas subsidiárias. Este trabalho analisou o processo de desenvolvimento de capacidades dinâmicas em uma subsidiária de P&D, o Instituto Nokia de Tecnologia (INdT), situado em Manaus (Brasil). Utilizou-se a análise por meio do framework de capacidades dinâmicas pois verificou-se que um constante processo de reconfiguração de recursos e competências foi concebido pelo INdT para possibilitar a condução de P&D em um mercado extremamente dinâmico tecnologicamente, o de telecomunicações. Por outro lado, considerou-se que esse seria um estudo exploratório, uma vez que ainda são relativamente raros os casos de subsidiárias similares no Brasil que tenham atingido uma produção intelectual significativa e de de nível mundial. Em seguida, estudou-se a rede de parcerias estabelecidas pelo instituto com universidades e empresas, avaliando de que forma essa rede de colaboração relaciona-se com o processo de aprendizagem organizacional. Finalmente, analisou-se o intercâmbio de informações com a matriz, buscando entender quais estratégias de transferência de conhecimento foram adotadas. Este estudo possibilitou a identificação de diversas atividades concebidas para deliberadamente se reconfigurar os recursos internos e os ativos intelectuais do INdT, para possibilitar o aprendizado de novas tecnologias e o desenvolvimento de projetos envolvendo essas tecnologias. The purpose of this thesis is to extract and provide practical knowledge and examples from both theory and practice in order to clarify some practices that can be used in the implementation of open innovation. It can be of interest for whomever willing to gain an insight into the practical features of open innovation and for companies considering, or struggling with the implementation of open innovation. The study was approached with a qualitative and interpretive method. Secondary sources were used exclusively to review the practical aspects of open innovation in theory and practice. Open innovation practice at Nokia Corp. and the Procter & Gamble Company were researched and reported using studies of other authors as well as the companies’ own publications. The classification of open innovation practices in contemporary literature is not sufficient to provide an understanding for the various types of open innovation practices that can be applied and used in practice. A classification based on types of activities is presented by the authors, and practical suggestions regarding design and implementation concludes the thesis.

Abstract:
The aim of the master’s thesis was to implement in the C++ language a software solution of the localization of the mobile phone with Symbian OS in the GSM network. The intended purpose of this solution would be especially the phone localization in the case of its theft or loss. A familiarization with the development process of the Symbian platform and understanding the features of the Symbian version of the C++ language preceded the realization itself, because the Symbian C++ has an original style of the memory manipulation and error handling. The Symbian C++ basic principles and its features used in the implemented software are described in the second chapter of the text part, the first chapter deals with the history and version structuring of the Symbian OS. In the third part of the text is described the created software. The realized solution consists of three parts – server application PhoneLocServer for a mobile device, client application PhoneLocClient for a PC and the web-located part. The server was developed for the Symbian OS in the C++ language in the IDE Carbide.c++ and was tested in the S60 3rd edition SDK MR emulator and on the real device Nokia N73. It is a GUI-less application running in the background, which is run automatically after a smartphone start-up. It controls the incoming SMS over the socket listening and the messages addressed to itself processes before a user can notice them. The control messages body is comprised of a prefix, which identifies them, a password, a sending period value and a state to which application should change. After the receiving of the control SMS server verifies the SMS sender through the use of his telephone number and the password. It compares these values with the data stored for the given IMEI on the web server. If the verification succeeds, the server runs a timer with the period known from the control SMS and on the callback of this timer are transferred the data describing current phone location and state via HTTP protocol to the web server. The GSM localization method “Cell ID” is used for the location determination. After the client user asks for the start of loading the data, he must answer the password and the observed phone’s IMEI and he is verified through the use of the web server again. If the verification succeeds, the periodic download of the server data starts and from the first downloaded file is found out the upload period. Download then continues till the time the client detects the end of sending by the server part or till the client user stops the download himself. The client was developed in the C++ language in the C++ Builder environment. It requires a Windows OS and internet connection for its right function. The web server mediates communication between the server and the client, stores the data for user verification and makes possible the server-side upload by the help of a simple PHP script. In all the used web server directories is present the .htaccess file to improve its security, e.g. it denies the directory listing in a web browser.

Abstract The majority of sports injuries involve the lower body, particularly the knees. Roughly 2,5 million people suffer a knee injury each year. Through sudden harsh movements the knee can get damaged. Often, these injuries never truly heal. Once the knee is weakened the risk of injury increases and in many cases the function of the knee will never fully return. The goal of this project was to empower patients who suffer from damage to the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) to recover faster by providing a personalized and humanized rehabilitation plan. Inspiration and Method Interviews, shadowing sessions and workshops were done with patients, athletes, surgeons and therapists to truly gain an in depth understanding of the rehabilitation process and how to prevent the injury from happening. This showed that there is a clear problem with the rehabilitation between the therapist and the patients. The outcome of the treatment is too much determined by the capabilities of the therapist, who often do not have enough expertise or get too little information to generate a personalized treatment for each individual. Another big problem is the fact that patients lose their motivation since they feel that they are not improving, and alone in the overall process. It became clear that patients need to be empowered and to let them know that the outcome of the rehabilitation is completely in their hands. Result The result of this collaboration is Ara, the smart rehabilitation bracelet. Ara continuously monitors the injured knee to provide an increased amount of insights, which enables practitioners to take humanized, and data driven decisions to personalize the rehabilitation plan for each individual. It empowers patients to take an active part in their own rehabilitation by providing live and precise feedback on their activities throughout the day.

For such creation is used software defined radio – in this thesis kit USRP1 which uses OpenBTS with GNURadio. As a switchboard is used PBX Asterisk and for testing GSM network was used OsmocomBB (on Motorola C123) and Airprobe (on Nokia 3310) projects. Installation and implementation are part of this thesis. In thesis have been also created two scripts for simplify of the work with projects and one laboratory task.

Aim: This study is part of a digital activation plan that was done for Sony Ericsson’s GreenHeart™ team in the fall of 2009. The investigation presents and discusses what Sony Ericsson and its 4 main competitors (Nokia, LG, Samsung and Motorola) have done within green digital marketing and how the subject was communicated on their webpages. The aim of this study is to: • To present and analyze consumer insights on ecologically-driven technology • To present and analyze the eco-marketing digital practices and strategies used by 4 competitive mobile phone brands • To propose a digital green marketing strategy for GreenHeart™ Method: This study consists of interviews with Sony Ericsson personnel, literature and web analysis that focus on the green initiatives of mobile phone manufacturers in the digital channel. Result & Conclusions: A main issue with green products is that consumers tend to find them not as good as non-green products. Consumer insight studies suggest that that the best way to communicate and promote green products is to focus on their direct benefits to consumers in comparison to non-green products, and communicate the green benefits only as a secondary message. This was also supported by theories such as Levit’s concept of “marketing myopia”, which describes a marketer’s tendency to focus on product features rather than consumer benefits. When analyzing the webpages of Sony Ericsson’s top 4 competitors, it was 3 evident that all 4 mobile phone manufacturers employed green digital marketing in quite a homogenous way. One striking similarity was that all brands have separated their green initiatives from the core of the website. It is a possibility that marketers have done this intentionally since consumers tend to associate green with lesser quality. In order for Sony Ericsson GreenHeart™ to stand out from the competitors, it was therefore suggested that green information should be integrated into the website and to communicate GreenHeart™ as a value-added product feature rather than a product in itself. Suggestions for future research: It is recommended to continue this research and to compare the findings from the mobile phone industry with other industries, such as the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), where Green and Organic branding at a glance seem to have been developed strongly. It would be interesting to gain a perspective on the similarities and differences in the green marketing practices of different industries, but also to gain knowledge and inspiration on how green consumer electronics could be marketed in a more effective and integrated fashion. In this perspective, analyzing any variations between on- and off-line marketing initiatives would be interesting to see if the green message changes in a typical marketing mix. Moreover, it would be good to counter analyze the psychological mechanisms why, for certain industries such as food, green products are regarded as high quality whilst in another industry like electronics, green products are regarded as having lesser quality and business value. Contribution of the thesis: The most important finding of this study is that all the analyzed mobile phone manufacturers have many green initiatives. However, they are communicated separately from all other marketing and communication initiatives in the main digital channel. They tend to be set aside that consumers need to search for them, thus the messages are not delivered seamlessly. This makes it appear that green initiatives are being regarded as something obligatory rather than something that has true business value. Using Theoretical arguments on communication strategy from Levit and ClearWorks show how this, in reality, can be changed and be integrated with product marketing where it can generate a more significant business value

In today world, the software companies are expanded above the continents. The software development work span continents and the distributed team work together over the borders. The agile development methodology demands close collaboration with client, rapid requirements change and an iterative development of fixed length. When this way of agile approach is applied in a distributed project, it requires frequent communication and knowledge exchange among the dispersed team members and need collaboration with customer over distance. Besides the geographical, the linguistic and the different time zone barriers in a distributed project, the computer mediated tools suppose being useful media in connecting and to coordinating among dispersed colleague in a project. Though, these tools depict variant effectiveness in communication exchange, however, there efficient use connects peoples at the two sites. The aim of this thesis study is to explore the communication channel support to the Scrum practices in a distributed project. The purpose of the research is to analyse collaboration and communication in distributed teams working together through computer mediated technology. For this purpose, a company case is studied doing a distributed agile project. The author’s insight the communication and information exchange through the ICT in an agile project. Based on the case analysis, the authors suggest the recommendations for implementing and establishing agile practices in a distance project.

I denna uppsats undersöker jag kulturella faktorer att ta hänsyn till vid lansering av en ny mobiltelefon i Mellanöstern för att vinna marknadsandelar, vilket även är syftet med undersökningen. Genom att använda teorier om kulturen i denna region kombinerade med teorier om konsumentbeteenden skapas utifrån dessa en analysmodell. Analysmodellen presenterar förväntade konsumentbeteenden vid val av ny mobiltelefon och jämförs med en liknande konkret modell grundad på 45 intervjuer med konsumenter i de tre länderna Förenade arabemiraten, Kuwait och Libanon. En intervju utförs även med det världsledande mobiltelefonföretaget Nokia för att få med företagets perspektiv om uppsatsämnet. Jag föreslår därefter kulturella faktorer för mobiltelefonföretag att ta hänsyn till och åtgärder att vidta för att vinna marknadsandelar. Det visar sig finnas en tendens till stark lojalitet gentemot utvalda varumärken och som kan förstås bättre genom att vidare bland annat undersöka kulturella faktorer, sociala och humana förhållanden i regionen.

This thesis describes the process of identifying key requirements for a map-based interface for a document management software. Existing software platforms suitable for implementation of such a system were identified, evaluated and tested. The purpose of this thesis was to provide Aconex, a document management company, a recommendation for the implementation of a map-based interface to its software for its customer Bechtel. Requirements gathering was done in stages: identifying stakeholders, understanding context, defining requirements and finally creating software specifications. Suitable platforms were identified by literature study and consultation. They were selectedbased on a few critical criteria. Selected platforms were used in implementation of a prototype showcasing the platforms’ abilities to satisfy the technical requirements. It turned out that Google Maps provided the best platform for Aconex's needs. OpenLayers was a great alternative and came with the ability of using unlimited numbers of KML-layers, but at the disadvantage of requiring more code.
Denna rapport beskriver processen att identifiera krav för ett kartbaserat gränsnitt till ett dokumenthanteringssystem. Tillgängliga mjukvaruplattformar som kan användas i detta syfte har identifierats, testats och utvärderats. Målet med detta arbete var att ge råd till Aconex, ett företag som arbetar med dokumenthantering, om hur de borde implementera ett kartbaserat gränsnitt till sitt dokumenthanteringssystem för deras kund Bechtel. Kravinsamling gjordes i olika steg: hitta intressenter, definiera systemkontext, samla in krav och utveckla programvaruspecifikationer utifrån kraven. Tillgängligamjukvarulösningar hittades genom en kombination av litteraturstudier och goda råd, och blev sedan prioriterade utifrån kritiska krav. Prototyper skapades i de mest lovande plattformarna, där varje prototyp visar hur plattformen uppfyller de krav som ställts. Resultatet blev att Google Maps var den platform som fungerade bäst för Aconex. OpenLayers var också ett bra alternativ då man där kan visa obegränsat antal KML-lager, men för att OpenLayers ska klara av lika mycket som Google Maps krävs betydligt mer kod.

No decurso das últimas décadas e com mais relevo desde o inicio dos anos 90, verificaram-se transformações Económicas, Tecnológicas e Empresariais centradas sobre a exploração multifacetada da tecnologia electrónica. Para a análise destas transformações mobilizou-se o conceito de "paradigma tecno-económico" que permite analisar de forma sistemática as transformações atrás referidas e identificar a emergência desde a década de 80 de um paradigma TIC (Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação). A evolução em curso aproxima uma época, em que se concretizarão modelos de Economia e Sociedade baseados no conhecimento avançado, que pressupõe uma larga e intensiva utilização das tecnologias de informação, comunicação e multimédia, nuclearmente dependentes do ponto de vista material, da dinâmica de progresso tecno-empresarial do sector electrónico. Portugal, devido às suas circunstâncias particulares de País tardiamente industrializado, acompanhou os desenvolvimentos destas tecnologias sempre numa posição de relativa dependência, evidenciando alguma incapacidade de endogenizar os conhecimentos indispensáveis para impulsionar produção avançada própria. Numa perspectiva de futuro a fragilidade do sector electrónico em Portugal configura-se como uma limitação substancial na via de construir em tempo estrategicamente útil (institucionalmente definido para o conjunto da União Europeia) uma via Portuguesa para o acesso a um modelo avançado de Economia (Baseado no Conhecimento e na Inovação). Nestas circunstâncias interessa saber, qual a visão dos intervenientes no sector electrónico em Portugal e também quais as características que operam a afinação de um caso Empresarial de sucesso da ordem interna : EFACEC Sistemas de Electrónica SA. A comparação com um caso de sucesso internacional, a Nokia, Empresa sediada na Finlândia, leva à evidênciação de cenários contrastados para o futuro do sector electrónico em Portugal, e de forma pelo menos parcial e mais indirecta, para a evolução da economia e da sociedade Portuguesas, a caminho de um modelo europeu avançado, previsto na Cimeira extraordinária Europeia de Lisboa, de Março de 2000.
Throughout the 1970's, 1980's and the present decade, important economic technological and entrepreneurial changes took place, based upon the wide diffusion and application of electronics technological developments. To analyze these changes the concept of "techno - economic paradigm" was set up allowing for the systematic study of the above mentioned changes and the identification of the emergence of a new paradigm, the so called ICT paradigm (Based on Information and Communication technologies). The present evolution anticipates an epoch in witch KBE / KBS models will arise, strongly based on a wide and intensive use of the information and communication technologies as well as multimedia technologies. All these branches will directly depend, from the hardware point of view, on the technical and entrepreneurial dynamics of electronics. Portugal, a late industrialized country, has lived all these changes in a somewhat dependent and marginal way, showing little capability to acquire the specific knowledge related to ICT and Electronics, basic to establish an internal competitive industrial capability in these referenced areas. In a futures perspective, the weakness of the electronic branch in Portugal will constitute an important constraint to implement a strategy to close the country's economic and technological gap vis-a-vis it's more developed European partners, now that the European Union has declared its overall strategic goal of the build up of an European KBE until the end of the next decade. Under these circumstances it's important to know what is the wisdom of the main internal players in the electronics branches in Portugal. Simultaneously it's important to devise the specific characteristics of the Efacec company, known to be a success case in the electronics branch in Portugal. Anyway the comparison of Efacec and Portugal with the international success story provided by Nokia and Finland leads to the design of contrasted scenarios regarding the future of electronics in Portugal and as well in an indirect measure the challenges facing the built up of an advanced KBE in the foreseeable future, in Portugal.

Nos últimos anos, assiste-se a um forte incremento no que diz respeito ao volume de dados e sua respetiva valorização por parte das organizações, sobretudo em aplicações de monitorização de performance de redes, como se observa na ferramenta Nokia Performance Manager (NPM). A situação atual justifica-se com o crescimento do setor das telecomunicações, com a necessidade de dar resposta à constante evolução das tecnologias de rede 2G, 3G e atualmente o 4G ou LTE, no processo de centralização, processamento e armazenamento de dados ou indicadores de performance de rede recolhidos por antenas espalhadas em diversas zonas geográficas. Neste contexto, a ferramenta NPM disponibiliza ao cliente uma visão global do desempenho da rede em tempo real, através da geração de relatórios pré-configurados e posterior armazenamento para futuras visualizações. Perante a necessidade de armazenar esses relatórios por um período mais alargado, sem limitações de armazenamento e de forma mais eficiente verifica-se que os tradicionais sistemas de gestão e armazenamento, os RDBMS em disco e cache, não respondem da melhor forma a estas necessidades. Posto isto, surgiu o conceito “In-Memory Data Grid” como uma plataforma de dados completamente distribuídos sobre uma arquitetura em memória. De modo a provar este conceito foi implementado um protótipo de software para o processo de caching de relatórios, funcionalidade do NPM, utilizando as tecnologias Apache Ignite/GridGain e Apache Geode/Pivotal Gemfire e posteriormente foi realizado um ambiente de testes que permitiu avaliar as duas soluções e determinar aquela que seria a solução ideal a integrar na ferramenta NPM.
In recent years, there has been a strong increase in the volume of data and its respective valuation by organizations, especially in network performance monitoring applications, as seen in the Nokia Performance Manager (NPM) tool. The current situation is justified by the growth of the telecommunications sector, with the need to respond to the constant evolution of 2G, 3G and currently 4G or LTE network technologies, in the process of centralizing, processing and storing data or indicators of Network performance collected by distributed antennas in different geographic areas. In this context, the NPM tool provides the customer with a global view of the network performance in real time, through the generation of pre-configured reports and later storage for future visualizations. Given the need to store these reports for a longer period, without storage limitations, and more efficiently, traditional storage and management systems, RDBMS on disk and cache, do not best meet these needs. That said, the "In-Memory Data Grid" concept emerged as a completely distributed data platform on an in-memory architecture. In order to prove this concept, a software prototype was implemented for the report caching process, NPM functionality, using the Apache Ignite/GridGain and Apache Geode/Pivotal Gemfire technologies, and later a test environment was carried out to evaluate the two Solutions and determine what would be the ideal solution to integrate into the NPM tool.

Ungdomsland är ett produktområde som återfinns på en av Nolias besöksmässigt största mässor, Stora Nolia mässan, som detta år anordnas i Piteå. Ungdomsland inriktar sig främst till personer i 8‐12 års ålder och har därmed aktiviteter på området som ska locka denna målgrupp. Inför årets mässa har Ungdomsland valt att göra mer reklam för området i form av en hemsida, en banner på Nolias hemsida, rörlig reklam på Digital posters samt en halvsida reklam i Stora Nolias mässkatalog. För att få mer information om målgruppens vetskap om Ungdomsland och vad de skulle vilja finna för aktiviteter där skedde en öppen diskussion samt en enkätstudie på två lågstadieskolor. Svaren på dessa användes sedan som hjälp att skapa designen till de olika produkterna. Designen genom alla produktioner följer en röd tråd så att åskådaren ska känna igen sig i vad de ser och kunna förknippa det till Ungdomsland samt de andra produkterna. Det har även genomförts användartester där deltagarna berättat öppet hur de upplever de olika produkterna. Svaren från dessa undersökningar har varit positiva och inga större ändringar har behövt göras. Även projektkoordinatorn för Ungdomsland och mässansvarige för Nolia tycker om produkterna och känner sig nöjda med dem. Efter positiv respons har produkterna lämnats in till respektive part för tryck och användning.

Los matrimonios son una institución tradicional muy arraigada en la historia de Chile y sus habitantes, los que, a pesar de los cambios de tendencia y en el ámbito religioso y social, mantienen en torno a los 26.300 matrimonios anuales, sólo en la Región Metropolitana. Esta industria se encuentra enfocada en los vestidos de novia nuevos, generando un espacio de oportunidad no explotado en los vestidos usados. La idea consiste en abrir una tienda de venta de vestidos de novia usados llamada De Blanco, con un modelo de negocio único que busca conectar con un nuevo enfoque a las novias con las dueñas de los vestidos de novia, contando con una fuerte presencia en redes sociales, eventos y servicios como lavandería, vitrina virtual y un showroom físico. Para la proveedora, De Blanco es una tienda que opera en formato de consignación: vende vestidos entregados por la dueña, de tal modo agilizando el manejo del stock y sin adquisición inmediata, si el vestido se vende, el valor consignado se le transfiere a su anterior dueño, y si nadie compra el vestido durante 6 meses, se devuelve. Con este formato, se requiere un extenso trabajo de búsqueda de proveedoras, una inversión inicial en el año 0 de 65 MM$ y capital de trabajo acumulado al 4-to año de 137 MM$. The subject of this thesis is to compare the most widely used mobile operating systems from the perspective of the development, distribution and monetization of applications developed for these systems. Compared systems are Android, iOS, Symbian OS, Windows Phone and BlackBerry OS. The thesis defines a total of 16 criteria against which systems are compared. These criteria are further divided into three categories, namely SDK features, functionality and distribution and monetization. All criteria have assigned weights which are determined by the paired comparison method using the Fuller's triangle, which is part of the Annexes of this work. Practical part of this thesis is focused on determining the values of defined criteria. Each criterion is evaluated separately, including an analysis of results. The overall evaluation is performed in a separate part of the thesis and is composed by categories evaluation and overall evaluation.

Svenska offentliga organisationer har behov av ärendehanteringssystem för att hantera offentlighetskraven som ställs på dem. En flora av sådana system finns, men det saknas anpassade metoder för att införa dessa, vilket kan resultera i misslyckade investeringar och brister i organisationernas måluppfyllelse. Denna studie föreslår därför en modell för införande av ärendehanteringssystem, som ska ge organisationerna det stöd de behöver i införandeprojekten. Studien utfördes genom en kvalitativ metod grundad på design science research där även element av action research ingick. De fyra forskningsfaserna som ingick var en intervjustudie, en litteraturstudie, framtagande av en införandemodell och utvärdering av modellen. En modell för införande av ärendehanteringssystem kallad NOKI-modellen togs fram, vilken grundade sig på tidigare forskning samt på de problem som upplevdes hos två svenska offentliga organisationer. Modellen utvärderades genom att appliceras på ett systeminförande hos de två organisationerna. Organisationerna var över lag nöjda med resultatet av införandet enligt NOKI-modellen, och uppfattade att modellen var ett bra stöd som även kunde ha ett värde för andra organisationer vid liknande systeminföranden. De lärdomar som drogs genom att utvärdera NOKI-modellens tydlighet, innehåll och implementationsvärde ledde till en föreslagen uppdaterad version kallad NOKIv2 som dock inte har utvärderats inom studien. Inga etiska problem med studien har kunnat identifieras då den ställts mot de kriterier som gäller för svensk forskning. En samhällelig aspekt med studiens resultat är att offentliga organisationer som, med hjälp av NOKI-modellen, genomför ett lyckat införande av ett ärendehanteringssystem sedan bättre kan uppfylla sina offentlighetskrav. Studiens resultat och slutsatser förmodas vara värdefulla för organisationer som skall införa ett ärendehanteringssystem samt för forskare som studerar införandeprocesser.
Swedish public organizations have a need for recordkeeping systems to handle the legal requirements placed on them. A flora of such systems exists, but there is a lack of properly adapted methods for adopting these systems, which can result in failed investments and lack of fulfillment of the organizational goals. The thesis was done through a qualitative method based on design science research where elements of action research also were present. The four phases of the thesis were a practical study, a theoretical study, the creation of a model for system adoption and finally an evaluation of the model. A model for the adoption of record keeping systems called the NOKI-model was created, which was based on earlier research as well as on the problems that were perceived by two Swedish public organizations. The model was evaluated by applying it on a system adoption project in the two organizations. The two organizations were generally pleased with the results of the system adoption through the NOKI-model, and perceived that the model was useful and that it also should have a value for usage by other organizations when doing similar system implementations. The lessons learned by evaluating the clarity, content and value of implementation of the NOKI-model led to an updated version called NOKIv2 which has not been evaluated within this thesis. No ethical problems could be identified in the study, when placed against the criteria that apply for Swedish research. A societal aspect with the results of the thesis is that public organizations that, using the NOKI-model, successfully adopt a record keeping system will be better equipped to fulfill their requirements of public availability. The results and conclusions of the thesis are presumed to be valuable for organizations that are about to adopt a record keeping system, as well as for researchers that are studying system adoption processes.

En el ámbito de las telecomunicaciones, contar con un teléfono celular es indispensable. Esta necesidad genera que los fabricantes de celulares cuenten con un plan que permita lanzar nuevos modelos de manera periódica, a fin de brindar a los operadores móviles (y, entonces, al usuario final) nuevas alternativas de celulares no solo al alcance de sus posibilidades económicas, sino que otorguen las funcionalidades esperadas. Para llevar a cabo estos lanzamientos, la empresa de diseño, fabricación, distribución, importación y comercialización de celulares (en adelante, empresa de celulares) cuenta con proyectos que buscan cumplir con los acuerdos comerciales firmados con operadores móviles de cada país para la entrega de modelos de celulares en un plazo determinado. Estos proyectos, al lanzar un teléfono celular de gama media, generan un ingreso aproximado de USD 1,800,000. El presente trabajo de investigación refiere a una fase del lanzamiento -cuya duración es 09 meses- que incluye la certificación, importación, gestión de marketing y venta de un primer lote de celulares, contemplando una inversión máxima de USD 385,000 para obtener una rentabilidad total del 40%, preparando al mercado para las siguientes dos órdenes de compra que se acuerdan con un operador telefónico en el acuerdo comercial. El éxito de estos proyectos requieren alinearse con los objetivos organizacionales, gestionar los interesados, conocer y cumplir los estándares de calidad necesarios para fabricar y distribuir celulares, cumplir con los requerimientos de costos establecidos, brindar capacitación al soporte de ventas, identificar y gestionar los riesgos involucrados y, gestionar el cronograma para los lanzamientos.
Nowadays, having a smartphone is essential. This necessity make that the manufacturers of these devices take in consideration a plan that allows them to launch several new models of smartphones periodically. Manufacturers offer mobile operators (and hence also to end-user) new affordable models with all the features they seek. In order to have succesuful launches, the company of design, manufacturing, distribution, import and sale of smartphones (from this point forward, smartphone company) have projects which main objective is to comply with the operators’ commercial agreements in each country. These projects, launch of a mid range smartphone, generate revenues of USD 1,800,000. This research cover the launching phase -which last nine months- and it includes the certification, import, management of marketing activites and sell of the first shipment. It considers a maximum investment of USD 385,000 to obtain a 40% profit and prepares the market for future purchase orders from the operator’s commercial agreements. Abstract:

The Ericsson R380 is a so-called smartphone, combining an advanced mobile phone with a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). To evaluate the usability of the Ericsson R380 and benchmark it against the Nokia 9110 Communicator and the Motorola A6188 Accompli, a repeated measurements experiment was performed. 18 subjects (10 men and 8 women) with no previous experience of any of the interfaces participated. Half of the subjects had extensive experience from using Ericsson mobile phones and half of the subjects had extensive experience from using Nokia mobile phones. A set of 9 tasks to be solved on each interface was presented to the subjects. The order in which the subjects used the interfaces was balanced with a Latin square design while the tasks were presented in consecutive order and were identical for all interfaces. Level of completeness, completion time and number of actions were assessed for each task and interface. Subjects also rated the perceived usability and aesthetics of the interfaces. Overall, subjects were most successful using the Motorola A6188 Accompli, using fewer keystrokes and less time as well as needing fewer hints compared to the Ericsson R380 and Nokia 9110 Communicator. However, the Ericsson R380 was rated significantly higher than the other interfaces on perceived usability. Previous experience with Ericsson or Nokia mobile phones did not have a major impact on how well subjects succeeded with using the interfaces in the test. Certain mistakes made by each group of subjects could be explained in terms of mental models, Einstellung effects and the use of so- called Function-Object interaction style where Object-Function interaction was appropriate. Contrary to earlier findings, aesthetics and perceived usability did not correspond to a great extent. Finally, the results are discussed and some suggestions for improvements are put forward.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Diuraphis noxia (Kurdjumov, Hemiptera, Aphididae) commonly known as the Russian wheat aphid (RWA), is a small phloem-feeding pest of wheat (Triticum aestivum L). Virulent D. noxia biotypes that are able to feed on previously resistant wheat cultivars continue to develop and therefor the identification of factors contributing to virulence is vital. Since energy metabolism plays a key role in the survival of organisms, genes and processes involved in the production and regulation of energy may be key contributors to virulence: such as mitochondria and the NAD+/NADH that reflects the health and metabolic activities of a cell. The involvement of carotenoids in the generation of energy through a photosynthesis-like process may be an important factor, as well as its contribution to aphid immunity through mediation of oxidative stress. The complete mitochondrial genome of global Diuraphis noxia populations was characterised using Next Generation sequencing, and was found to be 15 721bp in size and consisting of 38 genes typically found within most insects. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analyses of the genomes of nine populations revealed 125 SNPs in the protein coding genes with the majority of the SNPs occurring in the ND genes, and the least in the ND4L gene. Low SNP variant frequency was found for the atp6 and atp8 genes, which differed from other reports in the Hemiptera. Variable ND5 expression levels were observed among the biotypes, although no correlation was apparent between ND5 expression and the virulence associated with each biotype. Whereas atp6 transcription was higher in the highly virulent biotype (SAM) under normal and stressful conditions in comparison to the least virulent biotype (SA1). A significantly higher NAD+/NADH ratio was also observed for the SAM biotype under stressful conditions in comparison to the lesser virulent biotypes. UPLC-MS analysis did not reveal any lycopene or β-carotene due to low compound concentrations in the extracted samples but various hydrophobic compounds were present in different concentrations among the biotypes. The carotene desaturase expression profile revealed that SA1 had the lowest relative expression of the gene involved in carotenoid products, while SAM had the highest, under normal and stressful conditions. The results indicate that sequence conservation in mitochondrial genes are associated with key energy processes to maintain a state of homeostasis under variable conditions and that the generation of energy is a contributing factor to the virulence development of D. noxia. The results also show that carotenoids may possibly contribute to fitness of D. noxia through reactive oxygen species scavenging or the production of additional energy, but further investigation is needed for confirmation.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Diuraphis noxia (Kurdjumov, Hemiptera, Aphididae) algemeen bekend as die Russiese koringluis (RWA), is ‘n klein floëem-voedende pes van koring (Triticum aestivum L). Virulente D. noxia biotipes wat instaat is om op voorheen bestande koring kultivars te voed gaan ontwikkel voortdurend, en daarom is die identifisering van faktore wat kan bydrae tot virulensie so belangrik. Omdat energie-metabolisme ‘n sleutelrol in die oorlewing van organismes speel, kan gene en prosesse wat by die produksie en regulering van energie betrokke is belangrike bydraers tot virulensie lewer: soos onder andere mitokondria en die NAD+/NADH-verhouding wat die gesondheid en metaboliese aktiwiteit van ‘n sel reflekteer. Die betrokkenheid van karotenoïede in die produksie van energie deur 'n fotosintese-verwante proses kan 'n belangrike faktor bydraend tot luis fiksheid wees, asook die bydra daarvan tot plantluis-immuniteit deur bemiddeling van oksidatiewe stres. Die volledige mitochondriale genoom van globale Diuraphis noxia populasies is met behulp van volgende generasie DNA volgordebepaling gekarrakteriseer, en daar is bevind dat dit 15 721 bp in grootte is en uit 38 gene bestaan wat tipies binne insekte voorkom. Enkelnukleotied- polimorfisme (SNP) ontleding van die genome van nege populasies het onthul dat daar 125 SNPs in die proteïen-koderende gene voorkom, met die meerderheid van die SNPs in die ND-gene, en die minste in die ND4L-geen. Lae SNP-frekwensies is gevind vir die atp6- en atp8- gene, wat verskil van verslae oor ander Hemiptera. Veranderlike ND5-uitdrukkingsvlakke onder die biotipes is waargeneem, alhoewel geen korrelasie duidelik was tussen ND5-uitdrukking en die virulensie geassosieer met elke biotipe nie. Die transkripsie van atp6 was hoër in die hoogs virulente biotipe (SAM) onder normale en stresvolle toestande in vergelyking met die minste virulente biotipe (SA1). ‘n Aansienlike hoër NAD+/NADH-verhouding is ook waargeneem vir die SAM-biotipe onder spanningsvolle omstandighede in vergelyking met die minder virulente biotipes. UPLC-MS-analise het geen likopeen of β-karoteen geïdentifiseer nie as gevolg van lae verbinding konsentrasies in die onttrekte monsters, maar verskeie hidrofobiese verbindings was in verskillende konsentrasies tussen die biotipes teenwoordig. Die karoteen desaturase-uitdrukkingsprofiel het aangetoon dat SA1 die laagste relatiewe uitdrukking van gene betrokke by karotenoïed produksie het, terwyl SAM die hoogste relatiewe uitdrukking onder normale en spanningsvolle omstandighede het. Die resultate van die studie dui daarop dat die volgorde bewaring in mitochondriale gene verband hou met die sleutel energie prosesse om 'n toestand van homeostase onder wisselende omstandighede te handhaaf en dat die produksie van energie 'n bydraende faktor tot die ontwikkeling van virulensie in D. noxia is. Die resultate toon ook aan dat karotenoïede moontlik kan bydra tot fiksheid van D. noxia deur reaktiewe suurstofspesies te aas of deur die produksie van addisionele energie, maar verdere ondersoeke word benodig ter bevestiging.

Abstract:
The Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia, RWA), is a serious pest in most wheat producing countries around the world. Infestation of wheat fields by this pest has a severe economic impact, as a result of heavy losses in crop yield. Because of the importance of wheat as a food source and its ever growing supply demand, the study of wheat-Russian wheat aphid interactions on the molecular level are integral to the development of management strategies. This is highlighted by the fact that new RWA biotypes that overcome resistance in a number of wheat varieties, continually emerge. Therefore, this study aims to contribute to this endeavour, by elucidating the molecular mechanisms by which the RWA resistance gene Dn7 confers resistance to three different RWA biotypes (one from SA, and two from the USA). Firstly, suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) was applied in order to isolate transcripts differentially expressed in the RWA resistant wheat line, 94M370, carrying the Dn7 gene. There are two main advantages to this technique. One is that the relative representation of rare transcripts is increased in the subsequent cDNA population, and it is these low abundance transcripts that are arguably the ones of particular interest. Secondly, this method allows for the isolation of unknown transcripts, without the need for existing sequence information. Experiments with this method however, failed, leading to an investigation as to probable causes. The various steps involved in the SSH procedure were individually assessed in an attempt to identify and correct the problem. Various adjustments were made to PCR procedures, template enzyme digestions and ligation reactions, without success. After creating a basic cDNA-AFLP fingerprint from the existing cDNA template, in order to confirm that the template is not responsible for experimental difficulties – it was decided to apply a different strategy in order to meet research objectives. Consequently, the study on Dn7 mediated defence responses was continued with cDNA-AFLP. In addition to studying the response by Dn7 to South African biotype RWA infestation, its responses to infestation by two United States RWA biotypes was also explored. This allowed us to gain a greater comprehension of the methods by which Dn7 activates defences against different aphid eliciting agents. Findings suggest that this gene activates responses that are unique to each of the different aphid interactions. Although the interactions between Dn7 and the two US biotypes were very similar, this can possibly be explained by the fact that the differences between these two biotypes on molecular level are minuscule. Dn7 responds to the South African biotype of the RWA in a completely different manner, as judged by the very dissimilar expression patterns obtained during cDNA-AFLP analysis. Reasons for this phenomenon could include molecular differences between the South African and US RWA biotypes, differences in response generating elicitor molecules (which has indeed been shown to be the case between South African and US aphid biotypes), or a combination of both. The sequencing of fragments displaying differential expression patterns during cDNA-AFLP fingerprinting, provides us with additional information as to the exact mechanisms potentially involved. As expected, various compounds related to plant defence were identified, such as a number of Leucine rich repeat (LRR) domain containing proteins, genes related to cell signalling and genes involved in protein processing (proteases, peptidases). Finally, these results are consistent with theories that Dn7 may recognise and interact with its distinct aphid elicitors either directly, by the presence of multiple bindings sites on the same protein, or indirectly. In that case, in accordance with the guard hypothesis, Dn7 may simply monitor interactions between aphid elicitors and other recognition factors- after which a response cascade is activated. Useful potential research would focus on Dn7 itself, including mapping, isolation as well as structural and functional characterization.

Esse trabalho é parte do projeto temático BIOTA-FAPESP: “Uso Sustentável da Biodiversidade Brasileira: Prospecção Químico-Farmacológica de Plantas Superiores” e visa contribuir com a caracterização de espécies presentes no estado de São Paulo, investigando seu potencial químico-medicinal. Dentre as espécies com particular interesse, foram investigadas neste trabalho Guapira opposita, G. noxia e G. graciliflora, pertencentes à família Nyctaginaceae. O estudo químico do extrato clorofórmico das folhas foi conduzido por CG-FID e levou à identificação de esteróides e triterpenos. Os extratos metanólicos das três espécies foram fracionados por técnicas cromatográficas convencionais (permeação em gel, MPLC, HPLC) e as substâncias resultantes foram identificadas através de métodos espectroscópicos e espectrométricos (RMN, IV, UV e EM). Com este estudo, foram identificados em G. opposita onze flavonóides, dois monoacilgliceróis, um ureídeo e um ciclitol; em G. graciliflora cinco saponinas, duas delas inéditas, dois flavonóides e dois monoacilgliceróis; e de G. noxia dois compostos nitrogenados, um hemiterpeno e uma saponina inédita. As análises por HPLC-PDA-ELSD apontaram perfis químicos qualitativamente semelhantes entre as espécies. Dentre as atividades biológicas investigadas nas espécies, verificou-se que o extrato de metanólico de G. noxia possivelmente oferece efeito gastroprotetor na formação de úlceras, por elevar os níveis de glutationa, associado ao efeito antioxidante. Também foi verificada atividade antimicrobiana nos extratos de G.noxia e G. graciliflora, mutagênica em G. opposita e ausência de citotoxicidade em todos os extratos testados. Dessa maneira, este estudo contribui para aprofundar o conhecimento químico-farmacológico sobre espécies de Guapira, que ocorrem no estado de São Paulo
This work is part of the BIOTA-FAPESP thematic project “Sustaintable use of the Brazilian Biodiversity: Chemical and Pharmacological Prospection on Higher Plants”, and intents to contribute to improve the knowledge of plants present in the São Paulo State, by investigating their chemical and biological potential. Some of the species with particular interest are Guapira opposita, G. noxia and G. graciliflora, which belongs to the Nyctaginaceae family. The chemical study of the chloroformic extracts was performed by GC-FID and led to the identification of steroids and triterpenes. The methanolic extracts were fractionated by conventional chromatographic techniques (gel permeation, MPLC, HPLC) and the isolated compounds were identified by spectroscopic and spectrometric methods (NMR, IR, UV and MS). In this approach, have been identified from G. opposita eleven flavonoids, two monoacylglycerols, one ureide and one cyclitol; from G. graciliflora five saponins, two of them new, two flavonoids, and two monoacylglycerols; and from G. noxia two nitrogenated compounds, one hemiterpene and one new saponin. HPLC-PDA-ELSD analyses revealed similar qualitative chemical profile among the species. Concerning the investigated biological activities, it was observed that the methanolic extract of G. noxia has gastroprotector effects probably by incresing the levels of glutatione, associated to the antioxidant effect. Moreover, it was observed antimicrobial activity in G.noxia and G. graciliflora, mutagenic activity in G. opposita and absence of citotoxicy in all tested extracts. Thus, this work contributes to increase the chemical and pharmacological knowledge of plants from Guapira genus, presents in São Paulo State
