Abstract:
<strong>Aims: </strong>The aim of this study is to contribute to the establishment of a sustainable system of treating faecal sludge derived from autonomous sanitation system; this through co-composting with sawdust, using an analytical formula to obtain the appropriate ratio of mixing sludge and sawdust. <strong>Study Design:</strong> In other to meet that objective, we have spent eight weeks in the site of Nomayos, area in Yaounde city, support of the present study. For this period, we followed the movement of the depotted trucks of faecal sludge then recorded the quantities these waste and taken samples for the analysis laboratory. <strong>Place and Duration of Study:</strong> Physics and chemistry laboratory, University of Yaounde I and Research Center, National Advanced School of Public Work, between August 2016 and October 2016. <strong>Methodology:</strong> Data were collected and we counted 467 trucks emptying during this period. The analysis of these data collected from the field shows that the waste disposal site of Nomayos swallows up more than 140 m3 per day of faecal sludge which correspond to 10 emptying per day. We also noticed that, 85.87% of the faecal sludge came from septic tanks where they had spent several years. <strong>Results:</strong> The samples analysis showed that the faecal sludge dumps in this area had the organics fraction (TVS/TS) of 3.25% and the mineralization rates of 96.75%. This proves that, the waste had low organics fraction and had spent many years in the septic tanks before collection. The biodegradability index (COD/BOD5) of this waste was 21, greater than one showed that the waste was not totally biodegradable. We have proposed as recommended treatment system for this type of faecal sludge, considering ecological sanitation system for a sustainable development, the unplanted drying bed after which we performed co-composting with sawdust to stabilize the substrate and lagoon system for leachate treatment. This system presents a potential production of 21.0 tons per day of desiccated faecal sludge; 18.9 tons per day of compost and 120 m3 per day of leachate treatment. <strong>Conclusion:</strong> The realization of our proposed treatment system, will make it possible to solve this problem of pollution on a large scale.

Abstract:
Nomads have been credited to be the producers the chunk of the ruminants in Nigeria yet have been greatly marginalized. This study assessed the challenges of nomadic activities in selected four Local Government Areas (LGA) comprising of Daura, Sandamu, Dutsi and Mai'adua in Daura Agricultural Zone of Katsina State, Nigeria. A Multi-stage sampling procedure was employed in the selection of 60 nomads in the study area. Using a well structured questionnaire, information was gathered from the selected respondents with the help of trained enumerators. The information collected include socio-economic characteristics of the farmers, types of animals kept by them as well as the challenges they faced in the process of carrying out nomadic activities. The information obtained from them was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study revealed that the major age group is 61- 70 years and about 37% of the respondents have no form of formal education. Most of the nomads keep more cattle (63% having more than 200 heads) and less of camel and goats (77% and 88% having less than 50 camels and goats respectively). The major challenges they face are disease and pest attack (90%), insecurity (60%) and inadequate water (83%). A request for accessible veterinary services, adequate security, and a model school designed to meet the peculiarity of the nomads was made. The study concludes that establishment of ranches will improve output and better living standards among the nomads. The study recommends from the response in the research that training in modern animal rearing systems and ranching should be vigorously pursued.

Abstract:
Tibetic and Mongolic languages have been influenced by each other on various levels throughout history. Especially in the Amdo linguistic area, since the migration of the Oirat Mongolian nomads around the 17th century, there has been close cultural contact. Linguistically, both language groups have experienced language contact in both directions. In this paper, we focus on loanwords between Tibetic and Mongolic languages by using a geolinguistic approach. In addition, the Amdo area showcases a distinct preference for words tied to pastoral culture and weaponry. By comparing the general tendency of borrowing in each language group, the characteristics of cultural contact between the Tibetan and Mongolian tribes in the Amdo linguistic area are discussed.

Abstract:
Digital nomads are knowledge workers who actively seek a lifestyle of freedom, using technology to perform their work remotely, traveling far and wide, and moving as often as they like. They have left their local coffee shops behind and now proudly post their “office of the day” photos from exotic locales, but what do their lives really look like? This book takes readers into an expatriate digital nomad community in Bali, Indonesia, and presents new manifestations of classic questions about community, creativity, and the role of place in the modern human ecosystem. It explains why digital nomads leave their creative class cities behind, arguing that creative class workers, though successful, often feel that their “world class cities” and desirable jobs are anything but paradise. This book follows nomads’ work transitions into freelancing, entrepreneurship, and remote jobs. Then, it explains how digital nomads create a fluid but intimate place-based community abroad in the company of like-minded others. It shows why and how individuals blend in-person and online activity in their pursuit of community and freedom. This book provides insights into individuals’ efforts to live lives and create work identities that balance freedom, community, and creative fulfillment in the digital age, and it provides insights into a larger cultural discourse about the future of cities, work, and community.

Churchill, Robert Paul. The Cultural Evolution of Honor Killing. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190468569.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus in this chapter is on why honor killing ever came into existence as a social practice. The units for analysis are sociocultural systems and ecological pressures on the demographic groups among whom honor killing evolved. Here a population-level model of cultural evolution is employed to advance an argument for the best explanation for the development of honor killing. Only cultural systems performing adaptive functions continued among early desert nomads and pastoralist of the arid mountain uplands. Historical and anthropological research supports claims that severe ecological challenges led to two major functional systems: consanguine hierarchical patriarchy and the segmentary lineage system. Honor killing likewise evolved, first as a costly signaling system to avert loss of female reproductive assets and to avoid group splintering. It later evolved further as an exaptation and as a means of avoiding blood-related conflicts within segmentary lineage systems.

Full text
Abstract:
With the Russian annexation of Crimea in March 2014 - 160 years after the Crimean War – the peninsula has come to the geopolitical fore once more on the global stage. This book provides a comprehensive history of the region that until now has been missing, one that stretches from ancient times through to the present and which explores various aspects and inhabitants through the ages. Kerstin S. Jobst examines the complex history of the multi-ethnic and pluri-religious Crimea, and not only from a political perspective. Jobst deals with the manifold cultural and historical interdependencies that are central to the territory. The book presents myths and legends about the Crimea, as well as the various peoples for whom the Crimea was a settlement and transit area and who shaped the fate of the peninsula. These included Greek colonists, Eurasian nomads, Crimean Tatars, and others. A History of Crimea shows the importance of Crimea as a place of early Christianity, but also as a contact zone between different religions – Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. It also emphasizes the role of the peninsula as a peripheral area of various great powers – the Roman Empire, Byzantium, the Golden Horde, and the Ottoman and Russian Empires. With this overview of 2,000 years of Crimea's history, Kerstin S. Jobst places the most recent explosive events on the peninsula in their historical context and shows how the Crimea has become for the majority of Russians a highly emotionalized space since the first Russian annexation in 1783.

Full text
Abstract:
Borowiec surveys North African history and current efforts to halt the movement of the Sahara into surrounding countries. He shows how efforts in Tunisia are making headway against this ecological disaster, which confronts not only North Africa but Southern Europe and possibly the world in general. Veteran North African observer Andrew Borowiec surveys the history of the countries surrounding the Sahara, showing that Tunisia is the only country actively resisting the encroachment. Using onsite visits, interviews, and an examination of government records and newspaper accounts, he examines how Tunisians are pursuing a bold approach to the problem. He shows how Tunisia—a small, poor, but ambitious country—is taming the world's largest desert by erecting barriers against sandstorms, controlling urbanization, experimenting with farming, settling nomads, and successfully exploiting the desert as a major tourist attraction. Their efforts illustrate that there are ways to fight a major ecological disaster that demands serious attention across the globe. To many, Sahara is a magic word—a sea of sand. The desert has always fascinated explorers, geographers, environmentalists, and novelists, who turned to it for inspiration and adventure. Yet the Sahara poses an increasing challenge to humanity. Lakes that once dotted parts of the desert are drying up, such as Lake Chad, the continent's fourth largest lake, which has shrunk by 92 percent. As oases and grazing areas are abandoned, the region's population loses its livelihood and chances for survival, resulting in social and political upheaval. The Sahara's encroachment is a disaster for large portions of Africa, but it is also affecting Europe and perhaps the world in general. Windblown Saharan sand reaches Rome, Athens, Spain, France, and Turkey, and the resultant climatic and agricultural changes are only beginning to be studied—and feared.

Messier, Ronald A. The Almoravids and the Meanings of Jihad. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400609497.

Full text
Abstract:
This book offers a scholarly, highly readable account of the 11th-12th century rulers of Morocco and Muslim Spain who offered a full range of meanings of jihad and challenged Ibn Khaldun's paradigm for the rise and fall of regimes. Originally West African, Berber nomads, the Almoravids emerged from what is today Mauritania to rule Morocco, western Algeria, and Muslim Spain. Over the course of the century-long lifespan of the Almoravid dynasty, the concept of jihad evolved through four distinct phases: a struggle for righteousness, a war against pagans in the Sahara to impose their own sense of righteousness, war against "bad" Muslims in Sijilmasa and the rest of the Maghrib, and finally, war against Christian infidels—the Christian kings of Iberia. The Almoravids and the Meanings of Jihad takes readers through a clear chronology of the dynasty from its birth through its dramatic rise to power, then its decline and eventual collapse. Several important themes in North African history are explored throughout the book, including the dynastic theory of noted Arab historian Ibn Khaldun, the unique relationship of rural and urban lifestyles, the interactions of distinct Berber and Arab identities, and the influence of tribal solidarity and Islam in forming the social fabric of medieval North African society

Bailey, Clinton. Bedouin Culture in the Bible. Yale University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.12987/yale/9780300121827.001.0001.

Abstract:
Bedouin culture, the culture of desert-dwelling nomads, has existed for 4,500 years, including the era when the texts of the Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament, were composed. It is thus a good context for understanding much of the Bible’s often ambivalent content regarding economics, material culture, social values, social organization, legal practices, religious behavior, and oral traditions. The abundant and varied Bedouin materials in this book constitute a cultural document that supplements materials learned from other cultures of the Ancient Near East about the Bible. The plenitude of Bedouin materials in the Hebrew Bible, the common logic between Bedouin and biblical experiences, and the ancient proximity of Bedouin to what the Bible cites as Israelite abodes, ensure that the origin of almost all the biblical references presented in this book stemmed from Bedouin rather than other ancient cultures. This book, in detailing the profusion of Bedouin culture in the Bible, goes far toward establishing that the ancient Israelites did have a nomadic background, as they are portrayed. Through the prism of Bedouin culture we also gain fresh insights into our customary perspectives on prominent aspects of Judaism and their biblical origins, such as the Israelite god Yahweh (enunciated in Judaism as “Adonai”), the attribute of this god as unseen, the original significance of circumcision, the eating of unleavened bread during Passover, the dwelling in thatched booths during the Feast of Tabernacles, and the Jewish prohibitions against eating pork and other forbidden foods.

AbstractThe use of paleoclimate data in historical work has become a new and dynamic endeavor in several areas of historical research. This chapter is concerned with the empires created by pastoral nomads in the steppe regions of Eastern and Central Eurasia over approximately three millennia, from the early appearance of complex Scythian and Siberian polities in the early first millennium BCE to the Dzungar empire of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This essay aims to show how paleoclimate data may be used to illuminate connections, dynamics, and causal nexuses in the important, and yet often overlooked, historical experience of pastoral peoples and the empires they created. Paleoclimate data are especially important to supplement the scarce documentary sources left behind by pastoral nomads.

Abstract The Pontic-Danubian area mostly falls within the jurisdiction of several modern states: Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, the Republic of Macedonia, and the Republic of Moldova. In this vast geographical space, areas of true steppes form one common identifiable physical feature, especially for the more northerly of these territories. To the south, the links between the mountain ranges and the lowlands are the key to the region’s geography; the mountain chains fragment the region, breaking it up into several easily distinguished areas (Fig. 2.1).

Persistent immigration from the steppes, the dispersal of indigenous and invading population groups, widespread pastoral traditions and patterns of rural violence, and limited urbanization; all these have operated more or less continuously throughout the history of this region. They are vital historical themes. Yet, although one might expect them to be prominent in our accounts of the region in antiquity, they are not at all the sort of topics one encounters in much modern scholarship on the area.

Abstract:
Abstract The geography of this region has played a profound role in shaping the lives of its inhabitants. However, the immense variety of physical, climatic, and vegetational patterns and the sheer size of the area make it far from easy to describe. Even the most assiduous geographers have acknowledged that adequately covering the Balkan peninsula alone is an arduous task.1 Nevertheless, any historical account should clearly begin by some discussion of its climate, hydrology, and the distribution of soils. The physical background, here as elsewhere, proved a vital determinant in both settlement patterns and the agricultural strategies adopted throughout the region.

Abstract:
Abstract The final chapter in this book, a treatment of urban development during the Roman period, will be relatively short. The reasons for this should by now be obvious. Considerable archaeological evidence and numerous inscriptions might have been adduced to provide a picture of life in the cities. But from the ten preceding chapters it will be clear that however successful the Roman introduction of cities was (and it was by many measures remarkable), urbanization in the region remained relatively weak. Social and political upheaval, involving nomadic or mobile peoples, coupled with powerful, conservative traditions in rural areas and the problem of banditry, hindered city growth and sapped confidence.

Abstract:
Digital nomads are entrepreneurs or employees who almost exclusively use digital technologies to perform their work. They are addicted to the Internet, work on the road and live in multiple locations around the world. The Republic of Croatia is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for digital nomads. Accordingly, the subject of research of importance for this paper is the fundamental characteristics of digital nomads in the Republic of Croatia. The results of the research are based on primary data collected by the survey method (n=40). The survey was conducted from March 13 to May 13, 2023, in a Google Forms form, which was distributed via the social networks Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The collected data are the subject of analysis using the methods of descriptive statistics. The findings in this work can be helpful to managers of numerous organizations and political decision-makers at all levels.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the finds of jugs hammered out of sheet of the Straldzha type in the North Pontic region, which were first investigated by B.A. Raev in the 1970s and 1980s, who assumed that they were made in the workshops of Thrace. An analysis of the chronology of the vessels shows that in Sarmatia, with rare exception, predominate finds in the funeral contexts of the late 1st and the first half of the 2nd century AD., while in the Bosporus and partly in the South-Western Crimea, the finds of such pitchers predominate in the complexes and layers of the mid-3rd – early 4th century AD. Taking into account the finds of recent decades in the territory of the Western and North-Western Pontic area, in the Crimea, as well as in the burials of the nomads of Asian Sarmatia and the mapping of finds, it becomes evident that the center of the conglomeration of finds in the Northern Black Sea Coast is located in the Bosporan Kingdom with the “splashes” on adjacent territories: to the west – to the region of the South-Western Crimea and to the north-east – to the nomads of the Lower Don region. The doubts expressed by J. Kunow and D.B. Shelov over 30 years ago that pitchers of the Straldzha type were manufactured only in Thrace and Shelov’s assumption, that they may have been produced in the northern Black Sea area, become especially relevant now. To consider, as before, that all these pitchers, which were simple, easy in production and used most probably to boil water, found in the Northern Black Sea area (where the number of finds exceeds the Thracian ones by a factor of two) were made in Thrace, becomes more and more complicated and, in my opinion, contradicts logic. I am not going to postulate that the finds from Thrace were made in the Bosporan Kingdom, they could have been made in the local workshops or in Pannonia.

Abstract:
Purpose – Over the last two decades, people have significantly changed how they work and spend their leisure time. Taking advantage of remote work and lockdowns, many have taken up a digital nomad lifestyle. There are minimal studies on digital nomads in tourism destinations in developed countries, therefore the main objective of this study was to explore digital nomads as a traveller, their needs, and lifestyles in the relatively large city of Split in Croatia. Methodology – The eight online in-depth interviews were conducted in Split in the spring of 2022 on a population of digital nomads residing there during 2021 and/or 2022. Findings – This study identifies significant benefits of being a digital nomad in Split. However, the results also reveal a complex picture of the experiences and challenges of digital nomads affected by the seasonality of tourism, which manifests itself in a sharp increase in the cost of living (especially accommodation costs), disruption of their lives by crowds and noise, or services geared towards mass tourism. Furthermore, although local service providers appreciated the digital nomads in the off-season, they tried to maximise their income by switching to short-term accommodation rentals once tourist demand picked up, forcing them to move out and eventually return after the season. Contribution – This research identifies the digital nomad profile in popular tourist destinations in Europe. It provides recommendations that could help policymakers in any tourism-developed destination to implement policies for attracting more digital nomads to their cities which could positively impact their local economies.

Abstract:
Digital nomads are the simplest to describe as professionals who perform tasks independently of location and with the application of digital technology. Those individuals are characterized by a constant search for freedom, an escape from the traditional work environment, autonomy in choosing a destination for life and work. The locations chosen by digital nomads are pleasant environments, i.e. destinations where it is possible to satisfy work, social and financial needs. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the significance of digital nomadism as a global phenomenon. Acknowledging the impact that digital nomads have on the development of the local economy and community, the findings of the paper indicate the role of a strategic approach in creating an attractive environment for their arrival, stay and work.

Abstract:
Digitalization has enabled the rapid development of the gig economy and changed the entire paradigm in such a way that through digitalization people are increasingly achieving their primary employment. As a result, there is a frequent occurrence of the phenomenon of digital nomads and platform workers. Although initially conceived as freelance jobs, in certain cases, the legal relationships of digital nomads or platform workers take on the characteristics of an employment relationship. To circumvent fiscal and labour obligations, digital nomads or platform workers are often defined in contracts as self-employed individuals or independent contractors, resulting in a deprivation of labour rights. Consequently, a challenge arises for European private international law in terms of the correct characterization regarding the legal relationship and, subsequently, the application of the appropriate conflict of law rule to determine the applicable law.

Abstract:
An issue often addressed in the historiography of steppe nomadic research is the significance and role of mounds raised above graves. Out of the total of 564 tombs researched on the territory of the eastern Carpathians, 548 were discovered in mounds of 313 tumuli, and only 16 graves were found outside some streams. According to the data, 97.19% of the complex were tumuli, which is characteristic of the late nomads from all over the European steppe. At the same time, the flat necropolises are practically missing, which would date before the arrival of the Mongols. Most of the tombs of the Turanians were deposited in the existing mounds, built by their predecessors, nomads from different eras and historical periods and only 7 mounds (3%) of the Carpatho-Dniester area belong to the Turanian populations from the 10-14 centuries. In all cases, the mounds of the turanics are built only of plain soil, the presence of stones, wood, ditches or other architectural elements have not been recorded. In the mantles, in many cases, information was kept about the ritual procession and the procession. The number and location of the Turanian funerary complexes on the eastern territory of the Carpathians, help to establish the stages of migration in which the nomads from this region were. Most of the graves can be attributed to Turkish migrants in the first stage. This first phase is characterized by single flat burials or older mounds, in which the process of seizing new territories takes place. In the second stage, nomadic pastoralists establish their places of residence for certain periods of the year. The tumuli are scattered evenly in all areas, the number of mounds in the localities being different.

Abstract:
The paper presents new materials on the rock images of the banners of the Turkic period found on the territory of Kazakhstan. In total, there are 15 known locations of petroglyphs, which represent about 70 images of banners. There are 6 main themes with banner symbols. Our analysis reveals strong linkages of petroglyphs in the archaeological landscapes under investigation with the stationary winter sites of medieval nomads, as well as with the dominant mountain peaks. We identified three types of banner images and determined the dating and ethnopolitical affiliation of a series of petroglyphs. The region of the greatest concentration of rock images with banners is determined to be the Chu-Ili mountains in Semirechye, as the political center of the Western Turks, Turgeshes and Karluks in the Turkic period is determined. A link between such marker symbols and places that were permanent residences (horde) of the political elite of nomads in Semirechye in Turkic period is suggested.

Abstract:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was essential to ensure the environment and the techniques for remote work, which was strongly advised for health reasons. After the pandemic was officially over, the companies understood that many workers were better off in that working mode, while some of them enjoyed coming back to the offices – it was connected to many personal factors, among which motivation was one of the crucial ones for employees, and the trust and control was crucial for employers. Some employees felt cut off from the corporate culture, thus feeling like “gig-workers” and craved to come back to their offices, while some of them felt uncomfortable coming back from the serenity of their homes and “digital nomadism”. In fact, digitisation of the world hand in hand with globalisation has led to new opportunities in reshaping the workplaces, such as remote work and so-called digital nomadism. Digital nomadism refers to the work practices far from the office, usually from another town, country or continent, and it has brought many benefits like increased productivity and cash influx in less developed areas of the world, together with a sense of freedom, but they have also brought the sense of loneliness, uncertainty, financial difficulties, increased risk, and transnational gentrification. Many countries around the world, especially during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, stepped out with measures aimed at enabling the digital nomads with adequate visas. Serbia is one of the countries with a high influx of digital nomads, that have changed its economy and culture.
