Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of trends in the development of modern children’s books, its impact on the formation of creativity as one of the main competencies. The basis for the development of the visual and plot components of the children’s book in the middle of the 20th century and their influence on the formation of the psycho-emotional component of the young generation of those times are retrospectively covered. Possibilities of modern book publishing for authors-writers are presented. Perspective directions of publishing business development both abroad and in Ukraine are covered. The study revealed qualitative changes in the content, artistic, and architectural content of modern children's books, which are reflected in the latest plots, visual images, design, and creative approaches to putting out books. With the help of certain modern children’s books, we have proved the effectiveness of pedagogical methods of forming preschoolers’ ability to be creative in various life situations, their readiness for non-standard, original solutions, ability to be independent and choose freely, curiosity, development of imagination, courage, flexibility, mobility, etc. These are so-called “quiet books” for children which are popular nowadays. The story is told exclusively by means of illustrative material, which has its own unique author’s visual language and non-standard presentation. It develops children’s imagination and forms their tastes, non-standard thinking, ability to improvise, and encourages preschoolers’ to play. Books with an interactive narrative are of great interest to children. These are toy books, which stimulate children to create games or to become an author of a book with the help of an interesting story and illustrative material. It is offered to consider a modern children’s book not only as an information source but also as a means of stimulating preschoolers’ artistic and play activities. It is emphasized that the modern children’s book is a symbiosis of three artistic practices and might be used as artistic and game material in the educational process of PEI. The influence of books on the preschoolers’ psycho-emotional, personal-behavioral, artistic-activity development, as well as their creativity formation, is clarified practically.

Abstract:
Chapter 7 synthesizes the major conclusions of the book. As an examination of the Egyptian themes at Hadrian’s villa in Tivoli demonstrates, these conclusions are significant not only for Pompeii in 79 CE but also for Roman visual culture more broadly. Issues considered include the use of household material culture to literally “domesticate” ideologies of empire; the relationship between “Egyptianizing” and “Classicizing” forms of Roman art; a comparison of display strategies in “elite” and “non-elite” houses; the relationship between religious identity and material culture; conceptions of order versus chaos in Roman gardens; and the agency of domestic material culture in shaping everyday practices and experiences. The garden assemblages in this book present the Pompeian house not only as a microcosm of empire but also as a workshop where individuals could work out through practice what it actually meant to live in a changing, profoundly interconnected, and increasingly interdependent world.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses some of the contexts in which the gods and humans transacted in antiquity. To create an explanatory model, it introduces these contexts through objects: inscriptions, documents, coins, and other material evidence. The chapter first describes some theo-economic contexts that cultic sites provide, including banking, storage, and land management. From job contracts for religious professionals to imperially mediated disputes over sacred property, gods and humans regularly interacted with one another through the financial systems of temples. The chapter then considers examples of non-temple-related transactions. These material comparanda lay the groundwork for the analysis of Philippians throughout the rest of the book. While it would take a book-length project to fully describe the variety of theo-economic possibilities in antiquity, the chapter demonstrates the ubiquity of divine–human transactions and offers a preliminary map of the multiple ways in which theology and economy overlapped.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter presents the main themes of the book. The major theme is that of “touch” as it constitutes touchability/untouchability in society. Another somewhat implicit theme is that of dalit literature. This literature is the best-known feature, currently, of Indian and non-Indian understanding of the relationship between caste and modernity. Quite a lot of non-Indian interest comes to caste after encountering dalit literature. Ultimately, this book attempts to understand operations of touching and not touching, initially in themselves, but increasingly in their social operations as they relate to caste. To arrive at an understanding of caste that is different from those already available in the saturated field of caste studies, one has to attempt to think everything differently; and to do that one has to stop depending on material—texts, ideas, analyses—already available.

Abstract:
One of the challenges that architects and designers are confronted with in contemporary contexts is the need to address an ethical responsibility towards the health of the environment through understanding the energetic processes embedded in materials and their compositions. A scientific explanation of material fundamentals, including chemistry, physical structure, and embodied energy, provides the greatest insight to material property performance values and relative environmental impacts. This information aids architects in making informed decisions about building materials in the design process. This chapter addresses the book topic of reusable and sustainable building materials through the position that all matter is a form of energy, just as living systems are the transmutation of matter and energy. The seven major material groups, which include natural materials, non-technical ceramics, technical ceramics, metals, polymers, foams and elastomers, and composites, are presented with examples and applications discussed.

Abstract:
This contribution is an exercise in amalgamation: it seeks to blur the distinctions between archival and scribal culture, between form and content, and between the history of the book and history of material culture. Three leading figures of 17th-century Zurich—a clergyman and two magistrates—are spotlighted as they take respective measures to secure their memory. Although these measures and the corresponding archival situations differ quite significantly, it becomes obvious that in all of these cases materiality played a crucial role in the process of conservation. Written remains were referred to as relics, treasures, and monuments. To reduce those non-governmental collections to a cult of autographs, however, would miss the point. Copying also flourished and was thought of as a necessity as well as an act of asceticism. The argument is that ‘information’, narrowly understood, does not convey what early modern archives were all about.

Abstract:
This chapter presents two case studies which explore how in the years leading up to the Second World War Time and Tide’s seemingly non-feminist veneer is disrupted. First, the chapter discusses Time and Tide’s book reviews section and argues that the surface appearance of a less feminist engagement with literature and the arts is called into question by the archive of Theodora Bosanquet’s automatic writing. This unpublished material resituates her public reviews and – in the context of a perceived crisis in book reviewing – reveals a mode of feminism that Barbara Green has theorised as ‘a form of attention’ (2017) and evidences Bosanquet’s ambivalence about the male professionalisation of literary criticism. Second, the chapter shows how Time and Tide’s seemingly non-feminist veneer is disrupted much more overtly when all the leading feminists of the period emerge publicly in the paper at the outbreak of the Second World War. Through an analysis of Time and Tide’s correspondence columns the chapter explores the contribution this magazine made to public debates about war and peace, and its sustained commitment to the ordinary woman reader.

Abstract:
I began this book by saying that it would be an inquiry into the role of fiction in our lives and in particular into two things we care about a great deal and expend a lot of energy on: imagining and knowing. Fiction, I have argued, has a happier, deeper, and more stable relation to imagination than it does to knowledge. Understanding the concept of fiction (a very stable concept I have argued) depends on appreciating what it is to communicate something with the intention that it be imagined: armed with that and a general sense of the overarching purpose the maker of a text has and the ways that avowedly fictional material can be seen to serve some more important non-fictional purpose (and vice versa) we can often come to reasoned judgements that this work is fiction and that one non-fiction: judgments that don’t deviate much from the judgements of common readers, librarians, and booksellers. Abstract:
This chapter draws together the key themes of this book, using contemporary debates over the nature and future of international order, and explores likely sources of continuity and change in the politics of international law. It begins by expanding on the concept of international order and, more specifically, the so-called liberal international order that has framed international politics in the postwar period. The chapter asks whether and why the liberal international order is in crisis and how it is likely to evolve. It then turns to the rise of non-Western powers, a phenomenon that many observers have argued is contributing to the crisis of the current order. The focus is on what the changing balance of material power may reveal about the present and future of international law. Finally, the chapter offers some tentative conclusions about the politics of international law two decades into the twenty-first century.

Abstract:
If we seek to make informed assessments about India’s future foreign policy and possible contestations, we must revisit a much larger and earlier slice of its strategic past, in order to discern prior policy patterns during times of inflexion and change. The Cold War period offers a rich and relatively untapped empirical reserve that can provide much needed depth to understanding Indian strategic thought and geopolitical practices. And, to truly understand Indian statecraft one must go beyond the study of non-alignment and examine more concrete ideas that have informed Indian geopolitics over the years. This book attempts to explicate some of these ideas and their application during some of the most significant events and crises in India’s immediate and extended neighbourhood over three decades during the Cold War. This chapter sets up the book’s main argument, lays out the conceptual framework, elaborates on the historical scope of the case studies, and, finally on the archival material that has been consulted by the author.

In ASME 2017 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2017-65119.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper provides an overview of the significant revisions pending for the upcoming 2017 edition of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Section VIII Division 3, Alternative Rules for Construction of High Pressure Vessels, as well as potential changes to future editions under consideration of the Subgroup on High Pressure Vessels (SG-HPV). Changes to the 2017 edition include the removal of material information used in the construction of composite reinforced pressure vessels (CRPV); this information has been consolidated to the newly-developed Appendix 10 of ASME BPVC Section X, Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Pressure Vessels. Similarly, the development of the ASME CA-1, Conformity Assessment Requirements standard necessitated removal of associated conformity assessment information from Section VIII Division 3. Additionally, requirements for the assembly of pressure vessels at a location other than that listed on the Certificate of Authorization have been clarified with the definitions of “field” and “intermediate” sites. Furthermore, certain design related issues have been addressed and incorporated into the current edition, including changes to the fracture mechanics rules, changes to wires stress limits in wire-wound vessels, and clarification on bolting and end closure requirements. Finally, the removal of Appendix B, Suggested Practice Regarding Post-Construction Requalification for High Pressure Vessels, will be discussed, including a short discussion of the new appendix incorporated into the updated edition of ASME PCC-3, Inspection Planning Using Risk Based Methods. Additionally, this paper discusses some areas in Section VIII Division 3 under consideration for improvement. One such area involves consolidation of material models presented in the book into a central area for easier reference. Another is the clarification of local strain limit analysis and the intended number and types of evaluations needed for the non-linear finite element analyses. The requirements for test locations in prolongations on forgings are also being examined as well as other material that can be used in testing for vessel construction. Finally, a discussion is presented on an ongoing debate regarding “occasional loads” and “abnormal loads”, their current evaluation, and proposed changes to design margins regarding these loads.
