Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of trends in the development of modern children’s books, its impact on the formation of creativity as one of the main competencies. The basis for the development of the visual and plot components of the children’s book in the middle of the 20th century and their influence on the formation of the psycho-emotional component of the young generation of those times are retrospectively covered. Possibilities of modern book publishing for authors-writers are presented. Perspective directions of publishing business development both abroad and in Ukraine are covered. The study revealed qualitative changes in the content, artistic, and architectural content of modern children's books, which are reflected in the latest plots, visual images, design, and creative approaches to putting out books. With the help of certain modern children’s books, we have proved the effectiveness of pedagogical methods of forming preschoolers’ ability to be creative in various life situations, their readiness for non-standard, original solutions, ability to be independent and choose freely, curiosity, development of imagination, courage, flexibility, mobility, etc. These are so-called “quiet books” for children which are popular nowadays. The story is told exclusively by means of illustrative material, which has its own unique author’s visual language and non-standard presentation. It develops children’s imagination and forms their tastes, non-standard thinking, ability to improvise, and encourages preschoolers’ to play. Books with an interactive narrative are of great interest to children. These are toy books, which stimulate children to create games or to become an author of a book with the help of an interesting story and illustrative material. It is offered to consider a modern children’s book not only as an information source but also as a means of stimulating preschoolers’ artistic and play activities. It is emphasized that the modern children’s book is a symbiosis of three artistic practices and might be used as artistic and game material in the educational process of PEI. The influence of books on the preschoolers’ psycho-emotional, personal-behavioral, artistic-activity development, as well as their creativity formation, is clarified practically.

AbstractA careful consideration of a ‘scribble’ in English in the margin of a page of Oxford, Bodleian Library, Digby 63, a ninth-century Latin manuscript, yields a number of important conclusions: that the English material is homiletic, that it was written before the Latin, that the manuscript is certainly of Northumbrian origin and the English shows traces of Northumbrian dialect, and that therefore at least one vernacular homily in Old English was available for copying in Northumbria in the ninth century. It also adds to the evidence that a group of homilies in the Vercelli Book were drawn from an early and a non-West Saxon source-book.

ABSTRACTThis book is an update of a previous publication entitled Pilules mirages: Essai sur la qualité de vie des aînés. Recent statistics and a specific section on psychotropic drug use have been added to the latest edition. The main force of this book resides in its psychosocial perspective which highlights the association between non-medical factors and excessive drug use among the elderly. The importance of health beliefs and aging-related stresses are emphasized. As a conclusion, the authors put forth a systemic health-model of intervention for elderly drug abusers. In spite of their rather one-sided perspective, highly critical of the medical profession, the authors offer a good introductory text on excessive drug use by the elderly within a non-medical framework. This is suitable reading material for students in gerontological or addiction courses. It is also enlightening reading for any health professionals working with the elderly.

The shift of the way of reading from printed material into non-printed material (reading from the computer, tablet, and smartphone) happened in the past few years ago. This shift affects students’ learning and reading processes inside or outside the class. Previous researches have shown the negative impact of reading on screen. This article explores students’ reading materials from the internet today in relation to its’ weaknesses when an adaptation of the Extensive Reading procedure was applied in Prose and Book Report classes of English Language and Education Study Program during even semester 2018. Students were free to choose their reading materials which consisted of two short stories and four novels for Prose class, three simplified novels and three original novels for Book Report class. Not surprisingly, most students showed their interest in reading some literary works taken from some internet sources. Knowing the weaknesses of the source is needed so the teachers or lecturers can anticipate the problem that can be caused by reading those materials. It was found that students’ reading material from a certain internet source did not have a good structure of English due to some causes. Further activities for students who chose that source could be done so that students knew the weaknesses and tried to overcome them.

PAUL, T. V. "Taboo or tradition? The non-use of nuclear weapons in world politics." Review of International Studies 36, no. 04 (October 2010): 853–63. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0260210510001336.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractThe non-use of nuclear weapons since Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 has emerged as a major puzzle in international politics. Traditional International Relations scholarship views this largely as a function of the deterrent relationship that emerged between the nuclear powers, especially during the Cold War era. The fact that nuclear weapons have not been used against non-nuclear states, despite temptations to use them, remains a challenge to the deterrence-only explanation. More normatively oriented scholars have argued that a taboo has emerged against the non-use of nuclear weapons. Nina Tannenwald's book,The Nuclear Taboois the most comprehensive study on this subject which relies on constructivist logic of inter-subjective taboo-like prohibition in accounting for the puzzle. While I see much merit in Tannenwald's empirical case studies, it is far-fetched to call the non-use largely a function of a taboo-like prohibition. For, taboos by their very nature forbid discussions of their breaking, whereas nuclear states have national military strategies that call for nuclear use under certain circumstances. They have also in many crises situations considered the use of nuclear weapons. I have argued in my book,The Tradition of Non-use of Nuclear Weapons(Stanford University Press, 2009), that a more modest tradition can be given partial credit for the absence of nuclear attacks on non-nuclear states. The tradition emerged because of a realisation of the horrendous effects of nuclear attack (a material fact) which generated reputation costs for a potential user. These reputation costs in turn generated self-deterrence which has helped to create a tradition which is partially restraining nuclear states from using their weapons for anything other than existential deterrence. Unlike Tannenwald, I contend that the tradition is not a strict taboo and hence it can be altered if material and political circumstances compel nuclear states to do so. The recent policy changes that have taken place in nuclear powers such as the US, Russia, UK, and France do not augur well for the tradition as the conditions for atomic use have been expanded to include prevention, pre-emption and other non-proliferation objectives involving rogue states and terrorist groups.

Abstract:
Ladd's Intonational phonology is a substantial addition to an area that has only recently ‘arrived’. Fortunately for the field of intonational phonology, the past two decades have seen a number of seminal contributions from phonologists, including Mark Liberman, Gösta Bruce, Janet Pierrehumbert and Ladd himself. Work on intonation, which has advanced in sync with modern linguistic theory, can also look back on quite a number of rather specific studies by phoneticians and rather general descriptive accounts by linguists and English teachers on this continent and in Europe. The book's basic goal is to present the subject matter of intonational phonology to the non-specialist linguist. The material is not only summarised but also accompanied by critical comments. Ladd's goal of keeping the book accessible to the non-specialist may limit the depth of the presentation of the basic material and the definitiveness of the critical comments, but for many this will be a reasonable price to pay for breadth of coverage.

Internalization of values in forming a desired character certainly requires a well-planned process. Can be through individual, group and institutional relationships. Darul Ihya Islamic Boarding School as a non-formal educational institution is expected to give a role in shaping human beings with Islamic characteristics. In this pesantren the author makes the media devotion in order to internalize the values of fiqh in the book Fath Al-Qorib. By using the bandongan method, a group of students in one class listens to an ustadz who reads, translates, explains the material contained in the book Fath al-Qorib. Each santri pays attention to his book and makes notes about difficult words or thoughts, in the form of saffron or mufrodat meanings. The learning of the yellow book which had been carried out in the Darul Ihya Islamic boarding school had considerable implications for the formation of Islamic character for the santri. So that the presence of writers besides being able to meet the shortcomings of human resources experienced by the Darul Ihya Islamic boarding school can also contribute in carrying out the programs launched by the pesantren.

Analyzing the late Soviet (1985–1991) and post-Soviet (after 1991) evolution of the system of state economic management and its effectiveness, while mobilizing extensive factual and statistical material, the author of the book justifies the recommendation to the Russian leadership to stop throwing between the fear of losing «market innocence» and the practice of «smuggling» the use of non-market management methods. While agreeing with this recommendation, the reviewer also shares the opinion of E.A. Abstract:
The article analyzes one of the most famous textbooks by S.A. Khavronina for studying Russian as a foreign language Russian as we speak it. The book has become a hallmark of the Russian methodology and culture of teaching a non-native language abroad. The author examines the structure of the book, emphasizes the innovative findings of S.A. Khavronina, speaks about the features of presenting and explaining the material. Special attention is paid to the communicative orientation of the textbook, which for the first time offered a clear, simple and at the same time methodologically based strategy for teaching Russian as a foreign language. According to the author of the article, the book by S.A. Khavronina is an example of a balanced approach to the analysis of how the live speech influences on foreigners. It solves the key tasks of modern methodology of Russian as a foreign language: grammar-translated, personal-practical and audio-linguistic. The article draws readers attention to the problem of creating a modern textbook on Russian and intercultural communication, taking into account the best achievements in the history of these disciplines, using traditional approaches proven over the years and the latest methods of studying language as a cultural phenomenon.

Abstract:
The review of Frankenstein — 100 lat w kinie describes a unique form of the book proposed by Rafał Donica, Polish film critic and expert in popular culture. The shape of the book remains the object of its deliberations; fragmentary, heterogeneous narration by Donica reflects an idea of Frank-enstein’s monster body. Donica builds his narration with quotations, critical essays, historical re-constructions and original illustrative material. The author examines the character of Frankenstein’s monster in cinema and visual culture, which — as Donica accounts — brought about the transform-ation of the monster picture, extremely distant from Shelley’s prototype. The heterogeneity of Don-ica’s book manifests itself in several fields; the form of character appearance (from feature films, through animated films, TV series to commercials), temporal (from the beginnings of the cinema to present day) and territorial range — the author makes an attempt to present an objective, non-Euro-pocentric point of view, including examples of Frankenstein’s monster appearance in Asia or South America. Donica also proves his sensitivity to sociological mechanisms which guides popular cul-ture; he shows how “faces” of famous actors (like Boris Karloff) affected the monster image.

This book focuses on non-functional phonologies (NFP): that is, phonological disorders with no known physiological or neurological causes. It is a substantial book, well written and carefully researched, with an applied and pedagogical orientation that will make it invaluable for clinicians and students in speech pathology and child phonology. It is an ambitious and original work; its practical guidance for those assessing child phonology is based on a comprehensive and up-to-date descriptive and theoretical review of phonological systems and their realization in children's speech. It consists of six chapters, each of which introduces general concepts of phonology as well as modern concepts of nonlinear phonology and includes practical material, most notably a set of original worksheets that are geared to assessment or other types of intervention. It also has three appendices: the first reviews commercial tests, the second provides examples of stress patterns in English lexical items, and the third presents conventions of the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Abstract:
Abstract The production and reception of early modern vernacular Bibles was not a uniform enterprise: printed scripture appeared in different sizes, translations, confessional colours, layout, and content. Through the analysis of the paratextual material in several Dutch Bible editions, this paper aims to determine whether different editions stimulated and framed different biblical reading practices, with a focus on complete Bibles and New Testaments published between 1522 and 1544 by the Antwerp printer Jacob van Liesvelt. The comparison of the paratextual features of Van Liesvelt’s complete Bibles and his other, smaller editions, shows that both types animated non-canonical, discontinuous and essentially active reading. However, whereas Van Liesvelt’s New Testaments seemed to encourage the reader to approach the book as a practical tool in his or her daily life, shaped by the rhythm of the zodiac and liturgy, the paratextual features of the complete Bibles facilitate a studious, almost encyclopaedic reading of the book.

Abstract:
This paper comprises a review of the Pocket Study Skills book How to Analyze Data which I was invited by MacMillan International Higher Education to provide as a contribution to the current special issue. This includes both a preliminary review and an extension of this review to provide ten tips for educators to enhance the statistical learning of non-specialists in statistics. The tips are intended to provide a constructive approach to the review process through safeguarding educators, including dissertation supervisors, and learners, from being misled by some of the shortcomings that I have identified in this book. It is in this sense that I refer to these tips as “remedial tips”. As such, these tips should not be regarded as exhaustive in their own right in reflecting the statistical learning needs of non-specialists. Nevertheless, one of the important responsibilities professionally trained statisticians face in the teaching of statistics to non-specialists is that of empowering learners to stem the tide of misuse of statistics within their own disciplines, and one of the corresponding challenges is that of identifying published material that is potentially unhelpful and even counterproductive in achieving this goal. Thus, it is also my intention that these tips will be of broader pedagogical value as a handy reference, including for those uninitiated teachers of statistics to non-specialists who may be tempted to reach out for a pocket guide to support them in balancing the demands of teaching and research in an effort to make statistics less mystifying to their students.

This is because the word damage or in Arabic is called fasād has different and varied implications. These impacts can be in the form of material damage impacts and non-material damage impacts. However, the object of interest is in humans. Humans on this earth are basically people who have a religion. This raises a question, why do people who have religion participate in the destruction? Religious people should actually take care and even repair them. This research uses descriptive-analytical. This is aimed at obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the various types of damage caused by human actions. The method used to collect the main data, namely verses related to damage with the keyword term fasād and its derivations using the book al-Mufrād fī Gharīb Al-Qur'ān. The visual and linguistic properties developed by the author throughout the first book of The Armies of the Night are identified and assessed in relation to the anti-war movements and counterculture temperament of the 1960s. Comparisons are made with post-war writers and earlier North American authors as a means of clarifying “American” aspects of Mailer's handling of his material. Mailer's journalistic techniques, his often spontaneous and engaged responses, are also defined within the context of the social conflicts of the late 1960s.

Abstract:
This book wants to analyse the intersection between drugs and gender. On the one hand, drugs can be gendered and tailored to focus on either men or women. On the other hand, they articulate gendered subjectivities for us, so they can engender us. This work has taken its theoretical perspective from feminist techno-science studies. From a posthuman approach, analysis extends to nonhumans as active agents. A feminist critique is included with the concern for masculinities, non-binary sex/gender understandings and the intersection with race, class, sexuality and global inequalities. The book has used a wide fieldwork, as drug pharmaceutical advertisements, medical guidelines and the experience of some of the people directly affected by the side effects of some of tools for health. It is a relevant contribution for it is an approach to gender construction from nonhumans, which highlight the subjective processes in science. It throws some light on the construction of bodies and subjects in relation to pharmaceuticals, and the multiplicity of such material-discursive entanglement from a critical perspective of the biomedical power.

Abstract:
This article looks into missionary grammars as a resource for investigating translation and its entanglements with book publishing in the Spanish Philippines. Although current research directions tend to use them for studying early forms of non-European languages or for historicizing the initial stages of linguistics as a discipline, I argue that these grammars can also be examined as a translational corpus. Translation was an underlying procedure in their composition and, ultimately, in the production of linguistic knowledge under the colonial condition. This article shows how the Spanish-language grammars of Tagalog, the basis of the modern-day national language called Filipino, were produced as an academic and material response to colonialism. It traces the evolution of these grammars alongside the establishment of the printing press in the Philippines and the intricacies of Catholic missionary work. It proceeds to analyse the paratextual and linguistic contents of the grammars and the translation strategies employed in their creation. The article finally describes how the erosion of the theological foundations of language in the nineteenth century was manifested in later missionary grammars and how this coincided with the secularisation of book publishing.

In his book on Berio, David Osmond-Smith gives a brief description of Formazioni, but one would be hard pressed to find any further published material about the piece, save for liner notes in the two available recordings (written by Roger Marsh and Ferdinand Schmatz respectively, and those from the latter coming in the form of abstract poetry). Ekphrasis has received one studio recording, and no published analysis. The two works were completed towards the end of the composer's life, and they demonstrate a refinement of his craft; a much closer look is therefore in order.

The result of study found that the book of al-Balaghah al-Wadhihah is in accordance with the principles and criteria for the preparation of a good textbook. There are some advantages and disadvantages of this textbook. The advantages of this textbook include: the basic concepts of the subject are simple, containing verses of the Qur'an as an example of discussion of material and practice. However, it still has many disadvantages, among others: this textbook is composed for Arabic (Egyptian) students and uses Arabic as the language of instruction, not compiled for Non-Arabic (Indonesian) students so that it is difficult to understand by Indonesian students who are weak in nahwu-sharaf mastery and lack of vocabulary.

Abstract:
Media consumption is commonly seen as a major way of appropriating languages and cultures. Availability and accessibility of material are essential conditions for developing plurilingual cultural practices. Transnational circulation of cultural goods has reached a particular intensity in today’s world but is still marked by deep language inequalities. Combining sociolinguistic, language education, cultural sociology, and multiliteracy approaches, this study examines how plurilingual readers access books in their different languages. This qualitative analysis is based on 24 in-depth interviews with both migrant and non-migrant adults living in Western Europe. The findings indicate that printed and digital books in dominant languages circulate more easily, and through more visible and formal channels than books in dominated languages. In addition, the local and online book supply in dominant languages is generally cheaper and more varied, thus being more attractive. However, a wider range of means of access to books, and the active participation of the readers themselves in the circulation of cultural goods enable book-reading practices in less disseminated languages. Pedagogical recommendations for language teachers to encourage autonomous cultural practices among learners according to global evolutions and local specificities are provided.

Fascism continues to fascinate scholars within the social sciences, perhaps as much as communism, that other great non-democratic ‘-ism’ of the twentieth century. The topic also seems to be of continuing interest to the student and commercial book markets. In some cases bland repetition is the norm, but the pressure from commercial publishers often results in some excellent syntheses, even if based on secondary material, and that is not to mention the biography genre, which is always attentive to charismatic leaders and dictators — the more cruel the better. Moreover, the already voluminous academic literature on contemporary dictatorships often returns to the fascist and dictatorial regimes of the inter-war period. It is therefore only natural that Fascism should be incorporated in a series of handbooks published by Oxford University Press.

Abstract:
The article provides an overview of the book Anthroponymic System of Old Believers Living in Poland by the Polish researcher M. Ziółkowska-Mówka. This 5-chapter book includes an outline of the history of the Old Believer’ movement and its general features (Chapter 1), a description of the language situation of Old Believers living in Poland (Chapter 2), an analysis of their personal names (Chapter 3), a study of Old Believers’ surnames, Russian and Polish (Chapter 4), present-day unofficial anthroponyms, including historical and modern nicknames (chapter 5). An extensive appendix contains a list of Old Believers’ names (male and female), a list of “additional definitions” used in the 19th century, modern surnames and a list of modern nicknames. The review notes the importance of the collected corpus of Russian names and surnames in Poland and gives high account of the comprehensive analysis of the material (principles of selection of Old Believers’ personal names from documents and oral narratives; phonetic and morphological analysis of names, surnames and nicknames; motivation for nicknames pointing at different characteristics of people and their speech and referring to other anthroponyms). Synchronic and diachronic analysis of Old Believers’ names and surnames reveals a picture of historical and modern language processes against the sociolinguistic background of Old Believers’ interaction with non-Slavic and non-Old Belief communities. Of particular value to the study is the analysis of Polish and German names (which are also involved in Old Believers’ naming in various aspects), as it emphasizes the cross-linguistic and cross-cultural nature of the entire peer-reviewed work.

Abstract:
This review examines the book Cultural History of Russia published in 2020 by the publishing house of Charles University, Prague. This inquiry into the main areas of interest in both past and contemporary history of Russia has long been expected not only by students, specialists in Russian studies and in cultural studies, but also by a broad audience of those is interested in Russian cultural history. The authors seek to arrange the book according to the conceptual model; this innovative approach aims at underlining such cultural concepts that are basic and constitutive of the modern Russian culture. For these ends, facts, achievements and problems of the Russian cultural history are interpreted. The authors introduce students and readers to modern Russia, endowed with centurieslong heritage, multinationalism, large territory, but also with cultural contradictions and clashes. The book resolves a hard issue of presenting the real amalgam of views of the Russians on such disputes, and pays special attention to the Russian mass media and Runet. Therefore, suggests the book, modern Russians are in search of cultural identity, which is proved by heated discussions. The nine chapters help readers to get rid of the usual stereotypes in the image of Russians, invites the public to reflect on the achievements and contradictions of the cultural history of Russia. Discussion questions and tasks are what helps students that would read the book engage with the Russian realities and with each other. What is also beneficial for the use of this book in classes is that it is written according to the standards allowing a non-native speaker who has an A2-B1 level of Russian to understand all the information efficiently. To adapt the book to the needs and mental realities of European students, it is published in both print and digital format — the latter includes extra video and audio tapes. In the context of integrating the students with the material the authors should also be given the credit. They entangle the history and culture of medieval, modern and 21th century Russia with European history and the global cultural space. Overall, the book serves as an example in both fields: the cultural research and the textbook initiating and enhancing lingual and cultural understanding of Russian realities. The publication will remain a landmark among the educational achievements not only of the Charles University, but also of the community of European scholars specializing in Russian studies.

Abstract:
Background and objectives: Open-book examinations (OBEs) is a non-traditional teaching strategy increasingly offered today in nursing education programs. Open-book examina-tion is one in which students are allowed to use their notes, textbooks, and other ap-proved material (preferably not electronic) while answering examination questions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the attitudes of faculty and students towards open-book examinations as a teaching strategy in nursing education. Methods: A descriptive study was carried out at College of Nursing in Hawler Medical Uni-versity. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collected data. The validity of the questionnaire was confirmed because it produced accurate results of the study. Also, the questionnaire was reliable because it gave a consistent result throughout the study. Total of 100 nursing students and 35 teaching staff were participated in the study. Data were analyzed by using frequency and percentage for students and teachers. Results: The majority of the students (45%) and faculties (45.7%) agreed that OBEs facili-tate thinking at higher cognitive levels. Most of the students (61%) and teachers (51.4%) agreed that OBEs decreases students’ test anxiety. Also, teachers (48.6%) and students (41%) agreed that OBEs promote critical thinking regarding the contents of the course. Teachers and students agreed that OBEs encourage self-directed learning, decrease mem-orizing contents, promote student-centered approach to education, encourage students to read textbooks and articles more, and help students to be long-life learners. Conclusion: This study confirmed that open-book examinations when used as a teaching strategy in nursing education programs played an important role in improving nursing cur-riculum. To decrease students’ anxiety regarding examinations, this study pointed out that OBEs can minimize the students’ anxiety during examinations.

Methodological steps like the establishment of the data set, the collection of specific data, the organization of the information architecture, and the design of the display of these data are explained. The method is illustrated through a case study on nine illustrated books on non-human primates. This material is analysed according to given research questions on the proximity of non-human primates and human beings being depicted in the images of these books, and on the differences between the illustrated books with respect to their target audiences. The findings of our graphical analytics reveal patterns of proximity between humans and non-human primates as well as the iconology of the Book of Genesis in the pictorial and textual materials used by these illustrated books. This contribution presents an introduction to graphical analytics with an exemplary application.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has hampered the learning and its process at all levels of education ranging from early childhood education to college. In addition to formal education, non-formal education such as the Package C Equality Program has also undergone drastic changes in the teaching and learning process. From that problem teachers or tutors are required to be able to present effective learning innovations. Distance learning can be one of the applicable alternatives. This article aims to describe the innovation of distance learning models in the Equality Program in the South Purwokerto region during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study is a field research with a qualitative approach. Data was collected using three techniques, namely; observations, interviews and document studies. The data then analysed based on these steps; reduction, analysis and withdrawal of conclusions. The results of this study show that there are three methods of learning namely online (live book, quiz, recording material), offline (project work), and combination (group observation or self-observation, recording material, discussion, investigation and webinar, and appreciation of learning). These three learning methods are both modifications and adaptations of distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:
Knowledge of the appearance of texture components and fibres in pole figures, in inverse pole figures and in Euler space is fundamental for texture analysis. For cubic crystal systems, such as steels, an extensive literature exists and, for example, the book by Matthies, Vinel & Helming [Standard Distributions in Texture Analysis: Maps for the Case of Cubic Orthorhomic Symmetry, (1987), Akademie-Verlag Berlin] provides an atlas to identify texture components. For lower crystal symmetries, however, equivalent comprehensive overviews that can serve as guidance for the interpretation of experimental textures do not exist. This paper closes this gap by providing a set of scripts for the MTEX package [Bachmann, Hielscher & Schaeben (2010). Solid State Phenom. 160, 63–68] that allow the texture practitioner to compile such an atlas for a given material system, thus aiding orientation distribution function analysis also for non-cubic systems.

Abstract:
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), like many other Christians, believe in the importance of human stewardship over the natural world; yet within LDS doctrine, hints of less hierarchical inclusiveness of non-human beings can be found. The interpretation of LDS doctrine relating to the Fall underlie the influences of two LDS presidents, Ezra Taft Benson and Spencer W. Kimball, whose contrasting ideas illustrate that connections among ecology, righteousness, and prosperity continue to be complicated by the progression of technology and globalization in contrast to the frontier and agrarian foundations of the church. A close examination of a frequently cited passage in the Book of Mormon shows how Kimball’s encouragement to plant gardens is more amenable to a “prosperous” spiritual and/or material relationship to the environment than the methods Benson advocated to promote efficient agriculture and general prosperity.

Abstract:
In my book Immortal Remains (Braude, 2003), I considered an intriguing argument William James offered against the suggestion that mediumistic evidence for postmortem survival could be explained away in normal, or at least non-survivalist, terms—that is, either by appealing to what I’ve called The Usual Suspects (e.g., misperception, hidden memories, fraud) or The Unusual Suspects (e.g., dissociation + latent abilities, exceptional memory, or living-agent psi). More specifically, James was concerned with a fascinating, but frustrating, feature of the material gathered from mental mediumship—namely, that even the best cases present a maddening mixture of (a) material suggesting survival, (b) material suggesting psi among the living, and (c) apparent rubbish. At their best, of course, mediums furnish detailed information for which no normal explanation will suffice. In the cases most strongly suggesting survival, that information concerns the past lives of the deceased. But sometimes mediums also provide information on the present actions, thoughts, and feelings of the living, and that’s one reason why some cases suggest psi among the living, and why a living-agent–psi interpretation of mediumship is difficult to rule out. After all, information about present states of affairs is not something to which the deceased would enjoy privileged access. Moreover, to complicate matters further,. . . gems of correct, detailed, and relevant information are nearly always imbedded in an immense matrix of twaddle, vagueness, irrelevance, ignorance, pretension, positive error, and occasional prevarication. Abstract:
In an area where only a handful of books exist, Design Criteria for Mosquesis a welcome addition. A follow up of sorts to Kahera’s Deconstructing theAmerican Mosque (2002), it was hoped that this text would present new material and a fresh analysis in addition to serving as a guide for design. Thefive-chapter book covers mosques built in North America and Europe fromthe early 1920s onwards and incorporates many images and architecturaldrawings, including many from the author’s design office. Several overallissues related to inconsistency, however, undermine its potential. The greatestone is that of voice, a common enough problem when a book is writtenby multiple authors – the text fluctuates between didactic and spare guide listsfor planning and building a mosque to a philosophical discourse on the meaningof each issue related to designing contemporary mosques. The imagesand drawings could have mediated between the two polarized voices. The useof images, if explained in the text or even in subtitles, could have faciliatedthe discourse and related the ideas to the guideline lists.Yet this is not the case, for the images and drawings (of inconsistentquality and often with illegible dimensions) are included in the text’s bodybut seldom referenced in the text. The captions are also non-explanatory,thereby leaving the reader to guess at their relevance to the discourse andthe lists ...

Abstract:
The fact that an English learning program is provided to equip college students with English skills poses several problems since every university, even every non-English department, likely has its own system. One solution is to provide an acceptable material that is arranged based on the language that needs to be acquired. In order to solve the problem of supporting the English learning process in college, this research aims to produce a learning model for the novice level, i.e. college general English. The general English course is needed to provide the students with college English before academic English. Thus, the problem discussed in this study is what is the acceptable product of the text-based college general English? The researcher employed ADDIE model for the instructional design. The researcher also adopted Borg’s and Gall’s R&D model as the research methodology. The final result was a course book named College Just Ahead. This book consists of five units, which has two or three sub-units in every unit. The result showed that the product was acceptable by the mean score above 4.00 out of 5. Therefore, when it is completed, the course is more transferable. The students and instructors more focus on the process of acquiring an English competence, so that the product is more valid and reliable.
