Abstract:
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem of general symmetrizable hyperbolic systems in multi-dimensional space. When some components of the initial data have compact support, we give a sufficient condition on the non-existence of global C1 solutions. This non-existence theorem can be applied to some physical systems, such as Euler equations for compressible flow in multi-dimensional space. The blow-up phenomena here can come from the singularity developed at the interface, such as vacuum boundary, rather than the shock formation as studied in the previous works on strictly hyperbolic sys

Abstract:

Various data structures have been proposed for representing the connectivity of manifold triangle meshes. For example, the Extended Corner Table (ECT) stores V+6T references, where V and T respectively denote the vertex and triangle counts. ECT supports Random Access and Traversal (RAT) operators at Constant Amortized Time (CAT) cost. We propose two novel variations of ECT that also support RAT operations at CAT cost, but can be used to represent and process Simplicial 2-Complexes (S2Cs), which may represent star-connecting, non-orientable, and non-manifold triangulations along with dangling

We construct a new calculus of boundary value problems with the transmission property on a non-compact smooth manifold with boundary and conical exits to infinity. The symbols are classical both in covariables and variables. The operators are determined by principal symbol tuples modulo operators of lower orders and weights (such remainders are compact in weighted Sobolev spaces). We develop the concept of ellipticity, construct parametrices within the algebra and obtain the Fredholm property.

VIV suppression and drag reduction are key issues for improved operation in offshore drilling. Properly designed helical strakes are effective in the mitigation of VIV fatigue damage for many riser applications. However such strakes tend not to be applicable to offshore drilling riser applications. This is due to increases in drag force due to increased apparent diameter as well as workability problems for drilling operations. For these reasons, effective devices are sought that would mitigate VIV and reduce, or at least not increase, drag for drilling applications. Along with yielding good hy

Abstract Non-thru bore drilling tools often feature limited flow range capabilities due to their design complexity. An ever-growing demand in high flow rates required a new technical solution that has the lowest possible pressure drop across the tool. Potential erosion issues as well as consistent functionality of the tool were key design requirements. A new friction reduction technology is presented that addresses the applications with flow rates ranging from low to high.
