New families of even non-congruent numbers with arbitrarily many distinct prime factors are presented. Methods for generating even non-congruent numbers from existing non-congruent numbers are also given. These results yield new even non-congruent numbers whose factorizations contain primes in all four odd congruence classes modulo eight.

A positive integer n is a congruent number if it is equal to the area of a right triangle with rational sides. Equivalently, the Mordell-Weil rank of the elliptic curve y²=x(x²-n²) is positive. Otherwise n is a non-congruent number. Although congruent numbers have been studied for centuries, their complete classification is one of the central unresolved problems in the field of pure mathematics. However, by using algorithms such as the method of 2-descent, various mathematicians have proven that numbers with prime factors of a specified form that satisfy a certain pattern of Legendre symbols

The author used the following types of infinitival clauses: 1. infinitival clauses in which the infinitive joins with modal auxiliaries or their substitutes; 2. infinitival clauses without explicit subjects; 3. infinitival clauses in which the subjective component is not used in the clause but found in the context; 4. infinitival clauses in which the infinitiv

Responsiveness to cultural background has become a dominant theme associated with efforts to increase the effectiveness of human service delivery, both in educational and medical settings (Battle, 2002). As a consequence, service providers are in need of educational materials that accurately portray cultural factors impacting their interactions with members of culturally diverse groups. To address the need for materials pertinent to indigenous peoples in the Pacific Northwest (American Indians and Alaska Natives), an interactive, multimedia educational unit, titled “Diverse Voices: Native Perspectives in Human Service Delivery,” was developed with funding from the U.S. Department of Education (HO29K70133). A collaborative endeavor among faculty and students at Washington State University in partnership with members of nearby indigenous communities, this project sought to provide an information source for non-indigenous students and professionals, while simultaneously using a culturally congruent pedagogy — the oral tradition.

Abstract:
Russia and China took fundamentally different approaches to authoritarian rule beginning in the 1980s. But there is another dimension to the divide of the 1980s that has rendered. Chinese and Russian authoritarianisms increasingly similar: their common embrace of globalization. Both regimes established statist versions of globalization that seek to contain the impact of external influences and global fluctuations even while integrating into the global economic system. Even while globalizing, both have engaged in similar efforts to regulate their civil societies, cut them off from external sources of support, inoculate citizens against foreign ideas, and utilize globalization to their advantage. In their congruent handling of the challenges posed by globalization, Chinese and Russian authoritarianism may in fact be converging toward common forms of domination that render the institutional differences between competitive and non-competitive forms of authoritarianism moot.

Abstract:
This chapter explores how James Joyce interrogates the traditional procedures through which geometric symbols of "perfection and the divine”—including the concept of the infinitely straight line—are first acquired. By referring to Joyce’s early readings of Euclid’s Elements and other geometric texts including the works of Giordano Bruno, it examines how geometry is presented as a traditional system of ideal objectivities in II.2. More specifically, it demonstrates how the schoolchildren’s senseless application of the Wakean classbook’s instructions, and their attempted measurements of the visible world, reflects Bruno’s and Edmund Husserl’s congruent concerns regarding the practice of geometry as a “tradition emptied of sense.” This chapter also sheds light on Joyce’s application of non-Euclidean concepts by referring to his manuscript drafts for II.2, illustrating how non-Euclidean concepts stemming from the works of Bruno and Henri Poincaré are developed within the context of ALP’s curved bodily and terrestrial forms. More generally, this chapter illustrates how Joyce disrupts the univocity of Euclidean symbols by referring to non-Euclidean alternatives, questioning the absolute rectitude (i.e., correctness) of Euclidean geometry. In doing so, it argues, Joyce responds to a history of uncertainty regarding Euclid’s parallel postulate which began over two thousand years ago.

Full text
Abstract:
Depressive disorders are commonly associated with abnormalities in affective cognition. When processing information with emotional content, the depressed brain typically exhibits mood-congruent negative biases; that is, an abnormal preference for negative relative to positive information. In turn, recent psychopharmacological research has revealed that antidepressant drug treatments have the ability to push affective information processing more towards a preferential processing of positive information. These observations have led to the postulation of a cognitive neuropsychological model of antidepressant treatment action. This model suggests that negative biases play an important causal (rather than just epiphenomenal) role in the development of depressed mood and efficacious antidepressant interventions exert their clinical effects by acutely counterbalancing these cognitive abnormalities. In this chapter, we extend the focus to non-pharmacological treatments for depression and ask whether they too can influence affective cognition, and, if so, what these effects look like. We highlight recent studies investigating how cognitive behavioural therapy, electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial direct current stimulation, and environmental therapeutics impact on affective information processing in patients with depression. We show that, for each of these treatments, at least some evidence exists that suggests an influence on affective cognition and that in some cases the observed effects are directly in line with the cognitive neuropsychological model. However, as will become clear, the currently available evidence is rather sparse and, in many regards, incomplete. We therefore conclude that—similar to antidepressant drugs—non-pharmacological treatments can also influence affective information processing in patients with depression. However, whether these changes can counterbalance negative biases, and whether they are causally involved in the clinical effects of the different treatments, remains to be elucidated by future research.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the importance of trust in business-to-consumer e-commerce. The author explores the issue of trust in the development and implementation of e-commerce and focuses on the context and role of users and consumers in transactions. The author contends that trust is more than a technical consideration and emphasizes the non-technical components such as community, identity, and experiences and their relevance to e-commerce. Despite the growing ubiquity of e-commerce, analysts and commentators continue to draw our attention to the issue of trust in e-commerce transactions. In particular, stories of “hacking,” “phishing,” and illegitimate online transactions have been an on-going public and private concern. These breaches are seen as cyber crimes and detrimental to the development of an efficient and effective business practice. Resolving these breaches are costly; businesses have to outlay financial resources not only to fix the breaches but, in the eyes of their clients, such breaches call into question the efficacy, integrity, and security of these businesses, creating both disquiet and a potential shift to alternative providers. For individuals, it boils down to an invasion of privacy and a lack of trust in the integrity of business systems and practices. This chapter examines the critical import of trust in businessto- consumer e-commerce. The chapter begins by exploring the issue of trust in the development and implementation of e-commerce; in particular, it focuses on the context and the central role of users and consumers in the transaction process. I argue that this development is an evolutionary one congruent with increasing complexities and the shift towards a risk society. The author argues that there is a growing virtualization of social life and that this virtualization plays an important role in our everyday lives. In particular, it transforms our views of agency, interactionism and community, generating both new identities and new possible spheres of autonomous action. Businesses have cashed in on these developments and sought to provide users with choices and ease of use, contributing to a pervasive and critical reception to e-commerce business practices. Via their Web sites and information conveyed, we learn to trust the information we receive. As such, we tend to equate trust with information. Trust becomes no more than a technical consideration. However, trust is and cannot simply be reducible to information. Its nontechnical components—the issues of community, identity and experiences—are critically important. As such, I seek to examine these issues in this chapter and their relationships to the building of trust and consequently, their relevance to e-commerce.
