Abstract:
To evaluate the state of health of the composite, a real-time, in-situ acoustic emission (AE) damage detection system has been developed, where the monitoring of AE activity emitted from within a carbon/epoxy composite material (CFRP) is achieved using an all-fibre Mach-Zehnder interferometric sensor. The basic Mach-Zehnder configuration was modified to achieve the sensitivity needed to detect the low amplitude signals associated with AE. An active homo dyne feedback loop was employed to maintain quadrature, whereas polarisation controllers ensured that the state of polarisation of the guided

Hasan, Md Anamul. "Non-destructive Strength Gain Monitoring of Young Masonry Mortars and Assemblage at Different Ambient Temperatures by Using Dielectric Sensing Technique." University of Manitoba, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/30307.

Abstract:
The strength development of young masonry mortar and prism is studied through measuring the electrical properties of hydrating mortar by using TWIN-tape capacitance sensor. The dielectric properties over the frequency range of 10 kHz to10 MHz varies during hydration of mortar, providing a means for monitoring the strength development. This investigation confirms that the lower frequencies (less than 100 kHz) are very efficient in monitoring hydration of mortar. In addition, wireless sensing electronics is employed to monitor the strength gain process of young masonry prisms. Moreover, the fre

Contamination of packaged foods due to micro-organisms entering through air leaks can cause serious public health issues and cost companies large amounts of money due to product recalls, consumer impact and subsequent loss of market share. The main source of contamination is leaks in packaging which allow air, moisture and microorganisms to enter the package. In the food processing and packaging industry worldwide, there is an increasing demand for cost effective state of the art inspection technologies that are capable of reliably detecting leaky seals and delivering products at six-sigma. In this thesis, several aspects of GPR data processing for RC bridge decks are studied. First, autofocusing techniques are proposed to replace the previous expensive and unreliable human visual inspections during the iterative migration process for the estimation of the velocity/dielectric permittivity distribution from GPR data. Second, F-K filtering with dip relaxation is proposed for interference removal that is important for both imaging and the performance of post-processing techniques including autofocusing techniques and CS-based migration studied in this thesis. [EN] The primary handling of food with robots calls for the development of new manipulation devices, especially when products are easily damaged and have a wide range of shapes and textures. These difficulties are even greater in the agricultural industry because the quality of the products is also checked during the manual handling process. This PhD dissertation provides solutions to these issues and helps to further introduce robotics into the handling of food. Several methods for handling food are included and analyzed, and specific solutions are proposed and then validated with prototypes.
