Abstract:
Based on a qualitative study of the trajectories of 22 workers aged 50 or older who lost or left a standard job and then undertook some form of non-standard employment, this article wants to shed light on the quality of non-standard jobs often held by seniors. Can these jobs be categorized as precarious, and if so, what are the dimensions of this precariousness? Our analysis enabled us to identify three main profiles: early retirees, “competitive” non-standard workers, and vulnerable non-standard workers. This diversity is mainly related to the characteristics of the previous occupational trajectory but also to the characteristics of the repositioning job, the type of skills the worker has, gender, age, and the fact of living or not with a spouse.

Abstract:
In some countries in Europe the economic crisis starting in 2008 was marked not only by a rise in unemployment, but also by increases in individuals in part-time and temporary working, so emphasising the need to examine employment composition as well as non-employment. The promotion of non-standard forms of employment – such as part-time and temporary working – has been part of Europe’s employment agenda, but directives have also focused on raising the quality of such work. Using European Union Labour Force Survey data, an indicator of involuntary non-standard (part-time and temporary) employment (INE) is constructed, depicting a negative working condition. Descriptive analyses show important differences between countries in the incidence of INE, which is highest in Spain, Portugal and Poland, and also in the composition of INE. By contrast, INE tends to be lower in countries with Anglo-Saxon and Nordic welfare state models. Econometric analyses reveal that young workers, older workers, women, non-nationals, those with low education and those who were unemployed a year ago are at greatest risk of INE.

Timothy, Lester Clement. "Non-renewal of a fixed-term employment contract." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/431.

Full text
Abstract:
In terms of the common law contract of employment an employee who is a party to a fixed term contract, unlike an indefinite period contract, cannot be dismissed. The contract terminates upon an agreed or ascertainable date determined by the parties and the conclusion of the contract. Section 186(1)(b) of the Labour Relations Act 1995, however, defines the failure to renew a fixed term contract on the same or similar terms where the employee reasonably expected the contract to be renewed, as a dismissal. In this treatise the scope and content of this provision is considered with reference to relevant case law. The factors and considerations that establish a reasonable expectation are highlighted and considered. The question as to whether or not this provision also provides for the situation where an employee expects indefinite employment is also considered and critically discussed. The author concludes that the provision should not be interpreted in such a manner that an expectation of permanent employment is created.

Scaramozzino, Pasquale. "Wages and employment in non-competitive labour markets." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1990. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1098/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of an introduction and two parts. Part I deals with wage and employment determination under labour bargaining, and is formed of chapters 1 and 2. Part II looks at the role of inflation expectations in macroeconomic models, and is divided into chapters 3, 4 and 5. Chapter 1 sets forth and tests a model of labour bargaining in which the firm and the union are only constrained by the other party's available market alternatives if these are credible. Empirical findings, based on a panel of UK manufacturing firms, show some support for the main predictions of the model. Chapter 2 generalizes the theoretical framework developed in the previous chapter and explores its robustness with respect to changes to some of the assumptions. Chapter 3 assesses the literature on the relationship between inflation expectations, wage and price flexibility and variability of output. Expectations of future price changes may have a destabilizing effect on output if expected inflation moves procyclically. Chapter 4 looks at an overlapping wage contract model and derives analytical conditions for output destabilization to occur as wages and prices become more flexible. A new classical specification of the supply side is then considered, and price rigidity is established to be neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for increased output volatility. Chapter 5 analyses a monopolistically competitive framework with synchronized wage setting. Explicit consideration of the expected inflation effect makes employment and output variability more likely to increase with contract length.

Sherchand, Bageshwari. "Determinants of non-farm self-employment in rural Virginia." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42103.

Full text
Abstract:
This research uses primary cross-sectional non-farm-household data collected from Virginia’s non-metropolitan areas for the 1989 year. The primary objective of this research is to identify the factors that influence the probability of being self-employed. Using an effective sample of 851 household heads, a model consisting of two dichotomous probit equations are specified and developed to determine the statistically significant factors that influence, first, the probability of labor force participation, and then the likelihood of being self-employed. The probit equations are estimated by the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) procedure, using LIMDEP, an econometrics program. The Statistical Analysis Systems (SAS) is used for descriptive analysis and comparisons. The empirical results reveal that human capital characteristics influence the likelihood of labor force participation. A gender-disaggregated analysis illustrates that presence of pre-schoolers, and an employed spouse all decrease the probability of being in the labor force for women. For men, the variables have an increasing effect. Overall, two key findings emerge from the analysis with respect to identifying the determinants of being self-employed: That human capital investments in the form of education and particularly, labor market experience, play an influential role in determining the probability of being self-employed; and that access to and availability of financial resources, for example unearned income, are important factors in determining an individual’s likelihood of being self-employed.

Abstract:
The article deals with the Slovenian non-governmental organisations (NGO), NGO classification in Slovenian legislation and stresses the specific task of human resource management of the non-governmental organisations, namely for the work processes to be executed managers have to engage the volunteers at hand not only their employees. The employees in the Slovenian NGO sector are scarce, even though the European average (EU-28) of NGO paid employment compared to total paid employment is five times higher than in Slovenia. The text therefore presents the comparison of paid employment to total employment and total worth of voluntary work in Slovenian and EU NGOs. The Slovenian human resource management research in NGO is overviewed to argue why NGO leaders’ competency modelling would be the right step forward for Slovenian NGOs.

Employment of people with disabilities is very important in reducing the risk of poverty, social inte-gration and participation in society. As it is difficult for people with disabilities to integrate into the la-bour market, social enterprises can be considered as a new opportunity for employment and social in-clusion. This study investigates opportunities for social entrepreneurship development based on non-governmental organisations from the perspective of a regional city in Latvia. The paper applies ana-lytical study of secondary sources and in-depth interviews with representatives of non-governmental organisations. The results indicate that non-governmental organisations offer diverse potential for so-cial entrepreneurship development, and various forms of cooperation with local authorities might be possible.

Abstract:
Oxfam partners with the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD) through its Youth Participation and Employment (YPE) programme in order to connect with communities and train local community-based organizations (CBOs). JOHUD’s aim is to build the job-seeking capacity of youth in four governorates in Jordan. The programme organizes informal activities involving peer-to-peer education to help young people engage in the community as volunteers, and links them to various governmental and non-governmental institutions. COVID-19 and the associated lockdowns have altered the organization’s operations, with most projects shifting online. JOHUD has adopted a youth-led initiative aimed at matching young people’s skills with labour-market demand in each governorate where the programme operates. This case study presents examples of how the programme has helped young people transform into professionals, and how youth-led employment centres can contribute to youth development activities.

A&A has learned important lessons throughout its journey. A safe learning environment, flexible learning techniques, visual and performing arts in education and participatory management are key approaches for successful youth programmes. During the COVID-19 period, many of the professional development programmes have been delivered online, which was a good example of adaptation to changing circumstances that ensured the sustainability and continued effectiveness of the programme.
