Full text
Abstract:
Using Colombian credit vintage data, we decompose the non-performing loans into one component that captures the evolution of the payment capacity of borrowers, and other component that captures changes in the credit risk taken by the financial system at the time of loan disbursement. We use intrinsic estimators and penalized regression techniques to overcome the perfect multicollinearity problem that the model entails. We find that these two type of components have evolved differently over time, and that good economic conditions and loose financial conditions improve the payment capacity of bo

Blanco, Roberto, Elena Fernández, Miguel García-Posada, and Sergio Mayordomo. An estimation of the default probabilities of Spanish non-financial corporations and their application to evaluate public policies. Banco de España, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.53479/33512.

Full text
Abstract:
We model the one-year ahead probability for default of Spanish non-financial corporations using data for the period 1996-2019. While most previous literature considers that a firm is in default if it files for bankruptcy, we define default as having non-performing loans during at least three months of a given year. This broader definition allows us to predict firms’ financial distress at an earlier stage that cannot generally be observed by researchers, before their financial conditions become too severe and they have to file for bankruptcy or engage in private workouts with their creditors. Abstract:
The majority of policy makers in developed countries have, since the 1970s and 1980s, put in place a strong process for the liberalization, deregulation and privatization of the financial system, particularly persuaded by the mainstream assumption that this represents the best strategy to sustain the growth of finance, enhance economic growth and lessen inequality. Nonetheless, economic growth has been quite anaemic in the majority of developed countries, and inequality has continued to widen in the last four decades, which feeds non-mainstream beliefs regarding the disruptive role played by t

Abstract:
Over the last few decades, climate change has become a pressing issue due to its potentially deleterious effects on economic and social conditions worldwide in the years to come. These impacts can be expected to spill over to many markets, including the financial system. This paper seeks to quantify the potential long-run impact of climate risk on bank solvency in Colombia. To that end, it describes and classifies the risks climate change poses to banking system stability. It also reviews recent research to quantify its effects, with a particular emphasis on the nascent literature on developin

Abstract:
I. Performance of Credit Institutions (CIs) CIs in Colombia have adequate capital and liquidity levels to face risk materialization, both at the individual and consolidated levels. As of the third quarter of 2024, total assets and the gross loan portfolio of CIs continued to contract, although at a slower pace. The contraction in the loan portfolio is explained by the recovery in disbursements, in an environment of declining interest rates and a recovery in credit demand. Compared to the first quarter of 2024, the loan portfolio reported a decline in non-performing loans, although default leve

Banco de la República’s main objective is to preserve the purchasing power of the currency in coordination with the general economic policy that is intended to stabilize output and employment at long-term sustainable levels. This is understood to be a general condition in which the financial system assesses and manages the financial risks in a way that facilitates the economy’s performance and efficient allocation of resources while, at the same time, it is able to, on

Abstract:
The Colombian financial system has not suffered major structural disruptions during these months of deep economic contraction and has continued to carry out its basic functions as usual, thus facilitating the economy's response to extreme conditions. This is the result of the soundness of financial institutions at the beginning of the crisis, which was reflected in high liquidity and capital adequacy indicators as well as in the timely response of various authorities. Banco de la República lowered its policy interest rates 250 points to 1.75%, the lowest level since the creation of the new ind
