Sopakayang, Ratchada. "Viscoelastic Models for Ligaments and Tendons." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77298.

Abstract:
Collagenous tissues such as ligaments and tendons are viscoelastic materials. They exhibit a slow continuous increase in strain over time, or creep, when subjected to a constant stress and a slow continuous decrease in stress over time, or stress relaxation, when subjected to a constant strain. Moreover, the loading and unloading stress-strain curves are different when the tissues are subjected to cyclic loading, showing hysteresis and softening phenomena. The micro-structural origin of the viscoelasticity of these tissues is still unknown and the subject of debate among experts in biomechanic

This study introduces a new three-dimensional (3D) multi-scale constitutive framework for the nonlinear viscoelastic analysis of laminated and pultruded composites. Two previously developed nonlinear micromechanical models for unidirectional and in-plane random composite layers are modified to include time-dependent and nonlinear behavior. A new recursive-iterative numerical integration method is introduced for the Schapery nonlinear viscoelastic model and is used to model the isotropic matrix subcells in the two micromodels. Abstract:
Severe stenosis may cause critical flow conditions related to artery collapse, plaque cap rupture which leads directly to stroke and heart attack. In this paper, a nonlinear viscoelastic model and a numerical method are introduced to study dynamic behaviors of the tube wall and viscous flow through a viscoelastic tube with a stenosis simulating blood flow in human carotid arteries. The Mooney-Rivlin material model is used to derive a nonlinear viscoelastic thin-wall model for the stenotic viscoelastic tube wall. Recently, a new kind of turbulence has been discovered in the flow of concentrated polymer melts and solutions. These flows, known as purely elastic flows, become unstable when the elastic forces are stronger than the viscous forces. This contrasts with Newtonian turbulence, a more familiar regime where the fluid inertia dominates. While there is little understanding of purely elastic turbulence, there is a well-established dynamical systems approach to the transition from laminar flow to Newtonian turbulence. In this project, I apply this approach to purely elastic flows. Laminar flows are ch

Polymeric composites exhibit time-dependent behavior, which raises a concern about their long term durability and leads to a viscoelastic study of these materials. Linear viscoelastic analysis has been found to be inadequate because many polymers exhibit nonlinear viscoelastic behavior. Classical laminate theory is commonly used in the study of laminated composites, but due to the plane stress/strain assumption its application has been limited to solving two dimensional, simple plate problems. A three dimensional analysis is necessary for the study of interlaminar stress and for problems invol

When package warpage is too large, it may lead to difficulties of electrical interconnection. It is typically assumed that substrate is either elastic or linear viscoelastic.
