Este artículo busca analizar el poder expresivo del silencio, específicamente el verbal, y cómo éste es representado en el cine sonoro contemporáneo. Es importante investigar el silencio como herramienta expresiva en la cinematografía, ya que muestra el impacto de la comunicación no verbal, abre las puertas al entendimiento de las dimensiones más internas del ser humano y a los aspectos latentes de la existencia. Asimismo, otorga sentido a la historia e incrementa el poder de los elementos visuales. El silencio significativo merece ser estudiado por su riqueza en contenido comunicacional y se plasma de forma sobresaliente y original en las realizaciones de los directores que son materia de análisis para esta investigación: Béla Tarr, Wong Kar-Wai y Lucrecia Martel.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the historical, theoretical and philosophical development of cinematic media as a collective form of technological perception and consciousness. Central to my inquiry is the philosophical notion that with the invention of cinema emerges a cyborg vision, a new modern mechanics of thinking that extends the phenomenological and epistemological experience of human perception and knowledge into hitherto unknown realms of thinking, sensation and being. Drawing on some of the key cultural thinkers and philosophers of the twentieth century, including Walter Benjamin and Gilles Deleuze, as well as contemporary philosophers of media such as Jonathan Beller, Sean Cubitt, D.N. Rodowick and Mark B. Hansen, my research into the philosophy of cinema and digital media articulates a branch of media theory that reads the political economy of the moving image through an amalgam of continental philosophy, marxist theory and film studies. Coterminous with the investigation into the philosophical object of cinematic or media consciousness, the thesis also endeavors to map the historical genealogy of the moving image as it evolves from the industrial mechanics of cinematic technologies to the virtual informatics of digital culture. Central to this inquiry is the idea that the history of cinematic and visual media is inextricably connected with the rise, towards the end of the twentieth century, of postmodern consumer culture and the global information society. The transition from a modern industrial economy to a postmodern information economy that reorganises the logic of production according to the 'variables' of scientific knowledge, communication and informational technologies, parallels a metamorphosis in our media consciousness as the representational ontology of cinematic moving image is transformed by the virtual ontology of the digital image. The first part of my thesis looks at the period of industrial cinema, focusing on Soviet constructivism and the films of Dziga Vertov and Sergei Eisenstein. In this section I trace the origins of cinema as a mode of communication for the commodity, examining how the modern cinematic imaginary opens up new economies of vision and sensation for capital. Following this investigation into what Jonathan Beller calls the cinematic mode of production, the second part of my thesis proceeds to investigate how cinematic consciousness is transformed from the industrial to the post-industrial era. Taking Deleuze's historiographical demarcation of cinema into the two regimes of the 'movement-image' and the 'time-image' as a philosophical frame, the second section of my thesis investigates how in the post-war films of the Italian neorealists and Michelengelo Antonioni our cinematic consciousness develops a new way of thinking the ontology of time and space. This analysis leads into my discussion of how in the age of digital special effects and the Hollywood blockbuster, cinematic consciousness is further expanded with the time-consciousness of the 'virtual' as our bodies attempt to accommodate the heightened flows of information that bombard our senses in the interfaces of digital culture.

Abstract:
In many societies in developing countries, women are not given a chance to communicate their issues. The organisation within these societies places men at the top, giving them the opportunity to make all the important decisions. This situation is reflected in the two films which fall under this study, namely, Water and Moolaadé both of which are fictional representations of the oppression of women. In this study, an attempt is made to explain communication struggles in the two films: Water, reflecting Indian society and Moolaadé, reflecting African society. To understand the outcome of these struggles against patriarchy, the study looks at two types of feminism: Indian feminism and African feminism and attempts to find the sense that characters in the film can be understood. The analysis also looks at what the women, who act as feminists in the films have achieved out of their struggles to break the silence and how their voices have influenced or sensitised the silenced majority of women in their societies. Feminist communication theories have been used to analyse the female voice in the films. In the conclusion, I have argued that in both films women have managed to transform their respective societies. However more potential to social transformation are revealed by women depicted in Moolaadé than in Water, where there is very slow pace of change.

By focusing on defining the categories and pointing out what their differences are, viewers get a deeper understanding of what the project wants to tell. Even viewing some popular movies that are in its field, will help the conclusion become more accurate. My main source of method will lay in literature but my main focus will be on a survey that will be provided by the answers, to the topic in hand.

An important connection exists between ethnographic film and indigenous media though they are rarely linked in film theory. The link is not just hypothetical. Cast in the form of historiography, ethnographic film and indigenous media practices may be read as a continuist discourse with a number of critical turns. One such turn is the transformation of the ethnographic subject into a critical public. What is described as indigenous media allows us to categorize this transformation as a significant difference for the practice of ethnography, but the question remains as to whether this difference is retreivable in the terms set by ethnography. The emergence of the indigenous ethnographer has consequences for understanding the problems in the relations between Western and non-Western cultural formations. As a means through which a culture or nation may represent its own historical evolution, indigenous media is also, however, a discourse in formation--characterized by heterogenous claims and practices.

Denna studie är ett kandidatarbete utfört på kandidatprogrammet Grafisk design och kommunikation vid Linköpings universitet. Studien är en kvalitativ designfallstudie som genomförts i samarbete med dansgruppen Pussytiv Dance, där en installation innehållande dans och rörlig bild har utvecklats. Studien syftar till att undersöka hurvida samhällsdebatten om offentlig amning kan kommenteras genom rörlig bild som en del av denna installation. Installationen visades på Feministisk Festival i Malmö 10 juni 2016. Målet med installationen är att väcka tankar, känslor och skapa diskussion om det samtida samhällsklimatet kring offentlig amning i syfte att bidra till en attitydförändring. Debatten om amning på offentlig plats präglas av frågor som rör paradoxen kring kvinnans bröst som sexuellt objekt och matbärare. Samhällets normer leder till att kvinnor känner sig obekväma att amma på offentlig plats, där det även har skett diskriminering i samband med amning. Dessa normer var önskvärda att ifrågasätta genom installationen. Studien kom fram till att det var möjligt att kommentera samhällsdebatten om offentlig amning genom rörlig bild som en del i en dansinstallation. Det kom även fram till att installationens kommunikationsmål nåddes och att installationsformen, dans och rörlig bild, är en effektiv form för att få mottagaren att reflektera över sina egna normer, vilket öppnar upp möjligheten att ändra på invanda attityder.

This thesis redefines the Sixth Generation of Chinese film by examining the characteristics of some young directors’ films from the perspective of theme, form and production mode, essentially, from the perspective of the relationship between these directors and their times. I suggest that the most important condition in the construction of the concept of the Sixth Generation and the Sixth Generation film is the ideological rebellion against the government after the events of 1989. I hold the opinion that the Sixth Generation has adopted a more commercial outlook after the end of the 1990s, and explore reasons of this change from the perspectives of economy, culture and individual existence.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the rhetorical significance of visual metaphors as they occur in film. In particular, it provides a rhetorical analysis of Baz Luhrmann's film William Shakespeare's: Romeo + Juliet . The thesis analyzes how religious visual metaphors construct meaning by creating visual narratives that are just as powerful as spoken or written metaphors. The thesis relies on Gozzi's (1999) three levels of metaphors—surface, deep, and meta-metaphors—for the analysis of visual metaphors surrounding Father Lawrence and images of Christ that appear in Luhrmann's film. The analysis indicates that the visual surface metaphors of Father Lawrence depict a central character that is seedy, weak, and inactive. The visual surface metaphors of the images of Christ depict this religious figure as omnipresent yet impotent. The analysis indicates that the visual deep metaphors of Father Lawrence define this character as infirmed and culpable for the tragedy of the film. The visual deep metaphors of the images of Christ define him as infirmed and confined. Taken together, the surface and deep visual metaphors contribute to the development of a meta-metaphor in Luhrmann's film that depicts the Catholic religion as dark. Ultimately, the visual surface, deep, and meta-metaphors contained in Luhrmann's film contribute to the construction of meaning. They provide reasons for the character's inadequacies, establish narratives that are not part of the literal narrative as presented in Luhrmann's film and Shakespeare's original work, and provide a postmodern religious audience with substantial visual narrative with which they can identify.

This study sought to examine leadership through the medium of film, specifically the genre of the western. The western is iconographic; representative of the American ethos, the western embodied the "frontier myth." The purposes of this study were to examine how leadership was portrayed in a selected sample of western films dating from 1945 to 1995, and to categorize and characterize the leadership methods exhibited in each film. Qualitative in design, the study was concerned with broad description and discovery. Using observation as the data collection technique and content analysis as the research method, the study examined a sample of 29 pre-selected western films released between 1945 and 1995. Individual samples displaying leadership dynamics were drawn from each film through the use of verbatims and character analysis. Each film was examined for examples of leadership in order to gain a better understanding of the role that leadership played in the western and to ascertain leadership models exhibited in the genre. Conclusions of the study emphasized the diverse portrayals of leadership exhibited through this genre. The western showed a depth of character in relation to leadership, displaying a variety of styles, motifs, and characteristics representative of several leadership theories. Some of the concepts of leadership, and the underlying theories and styles portrayed, revealed a universal quality about leadership that transcended theoretical research. The western was a multi-faceted venue through which to study leadership, providing a unique perspective on the dynamics involved in the leadership process both through theory and by praxis.

For the purpose of this thesis, the main focus of the feminist rhetorical criticism method was specifically linked to gender-related power inequities. This method was especially appropriate for the analysis of how film violence is used as a feminist rhetorical strategy in the Kill Bill films. This thesis is more closely aligned with challenging rhetorical standards as it sought to identify feminist counter positions of rhetoric in film violence.

Si l’œuvre littéraire de Maurice Maeterlinck suscite nombre de recherches, ses activités dans le domaine du cinéma sont moins connues et moins étudiées. La présente thèse, qui s’appuie sur les concepts de la sociologie de Pierre Bourdieu, entend combler une lacune en analysant la trajectoire de l’auteur dans le champ cinématographique pendant les années 1910 et 1920, c’est-à-dire la période où il manifeste le plus d’intérêt pour le cinéma. L’étude comprend trois analyses. La première concerne le point de vue de Maurice Maeterlinck, son entrée et son déplacement dans le champ cinématographique. L’auteur consacré dans son champ d’origine développe, dans le nouveau champ investi, des produits dérivés orientés vers le public élargi et diversifié. La deuxième analyse concerne les transformations du champ cinématographique et le point de vue des autres agents, en particulier celui des maisons de production et de distribution. Celles-ci insèrent les adaptations de l’auteur dans une série de produits plus ou moins standardisés, qui leur permettent de se situer dans le champ. La troisième analyse concerne quelques films et projets de films datant des années 1910 et 1920, liés aux œuvres littéraires de Maurice Maeterlinck, comme The Blue Bird (Maurice Tourneur, 1918). Aussi bien les composantes externes (par exemple, la mise en place du projet, la production ou l’exploitation) que les composantes internes (par exemple, la mise en scène ou l’éclairage) sont les indicateurs de la position de l’auteur et les indicateurs du fonctionnement du champ dans son ensemble. / The researches on the literary works of Maurice Maeterlinck are numerous but his activity in the cinema is less known and less studied. The PhD thesis is based on the concepts of the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu ;its purpose is to bring new information by analyzing the trajectory of the author in the cinematic field during the 1910s and the 1920s, when he is the most interested in the cinema. The study includes three analyses. The first one concerns Maurice Maeterlinck's point of view, his entrance and his movement in the cinematic field. The author who is recognized in his first field develops in the new invested field several products who are directed to the widened and diversified public. The second analysis concerns the transformations of the cinematic field and the point of view of the other agents, e.g. the houses of production and distribution. These houses insert the adaptations of the author into a series of more or less standardized products, which allow them to be situated in the field. The third analysis concerns some films and projects of films of the 1910s and the 1920s, adapted from the literary works of Maurice Maeterlinck (e.g. The Blue Bird, Maurice Tourneur, 1918). The external components (the organization of the project, the production or the exploitation) and the internal components (the direction or the lighting) indicate how the author is situated and how the field is organized.

Nostalgia is the longing for a lost, and often substantially reimagined, time or place. Commonly regarded as a conservative impulse available for exploitation by hegemonic forces, nostalgia can also be a source of social questioning and creative inspiration. This dissertation examines the ways in which nostalgic longing imports images and ideas from memory into present discourse and infuses works of art with complication, contradiction, and ambiguity. In the early 1960s, emboldened by Nikita Khrushchev's cultural Thaw, many Soviet filmmakers engaged both personal and social memory to craft challenging reflections of and responses to their times. These filmmakers reengaged the sundered spirit of the 1920s avant-garde and reimagined the nation's artistic and spiritual heritage; they captured the passing moments of contemporary history in a way that animated the permanent, productive, and sometimes stormy dialogue between the present and the persistent past. Mikhail Kalatozov's I Am Cuba (1964), Andrei Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev (1966, released 1971), and Marlen Khutsiev's Ilich's Gate (1961, released with changes in 1965 as I Am Twenty ) were planned in the anxious years surrounding Khrushchev's fall, and the films mark a high point of Thaw-era cinematic audacity. Each film is epic in scope; each deploys temporal longing to generate narrative ambiguity and dialogue between historical epochs. The films are haunted by ghosts; they challenge the hegemony of the "now" by insisting on the phantom presence of a thousand "thens"; they refurbish old dreams and question contemporary assumptions. The Thaw permitted the intrusion of private memory into public history, and the past became a zone for exploration rather than justification. Easy answers became harder to come by, but the profusion of questions and suggestions created a brief silver age for Soviet cinema. For us, these films offer an extraordinary glimpse into creative life during one of the great, unsung social transitions of the 20th century and reveal the crucial contribution of individual memory in the artistic quest for formal diversity, spiritual inspiration, and ethical living.

La proposition centrale de cette thèse est double. D’une part, il s’agit de jeter les bases d’un modèle historique qui réunirait tous les dispositifs audiovisuels qui associent des images animées à une chanson populaire qui leur est préexistante sous un même paradigme culturel que nous baptiserons « phono-cinématographie ». Celui-ci aurait débuté vers la fin du XIXe siècle, avec l’invention du kinétoscope d’Edison, pour aboutir à nos jours avec l’émergence des vidéos musicales interactives sur Internet. D’autre part, il s’agit de nous interroger sur le rôle a priori central que les Beatles occupent au sein de cette histoire de la chanson populaire mise en image. Notre hypothèse principale est que le vidéoclip, tel qu’il s’est institutionnalisé au début des années 1980 pour ensuite se perpétuer jusque dans les années 2000, n’a rien d’une pratique culturelle (voir même d’un média) figé(e) :bien au contraire, cette pratique/ce média a été l’objet de réélaborations continues tant sur le plan de la production, de la diffusion que de la fonction.

Notre approche se situe à cheval sur l’histoire du cinéma, de la musique populaire et de la télévision. En nous appuyant sur certaines propositions théoriques et certains concepts formulés dans le champ des études cinématographiques ainsi que dans le champ des performance studies, nous serons particulièrement attentif aux questions de représentation qui se déploient dans ces différents dispositifs phono-cinématographiques :à savoir, les premiers films chantants (les phono-scènes Gaumont et les Vitaphone shorts), les juke-boxes équipés d’un écran (les Soundies et les Scopitones) et enfin les vidéos musicales télévisées (les films promotionnels et les vidéoclips).

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the figure of the cyborg as conceptualised by Donna Haraway in The Cyborg Manifesto (1991). The figure of the cyborg, as a transgressive figure in the late twentieth century within socialist feminist discourse, is problematized with regard to its efficacy as a creature that challenges the constructed nature of gender and contests the boundary between human and machine through its ambiguous nature. Haraway’s notions of the cyborg, which she bases partly on cyborg characters from Science Fiction literature, deny the ocularcentric traditions that have structured gender and the body. Similarly, Haraway does not engage adequately with the figure of the cyborg with regard to situating it historically. This thesis unpacks both the visual and the historical aspects that have structured the cyborg body. By engaging with these concepts, the cyborg emerges as a figure that is identified through visual signifiers of female deviance and pathology. By reading female deviance and pathology on the body of the nineteenth-century hysteric, similarities can be drawn between the hysteric and the cyborg. Through a reading of Alien (1979); Blade Runner (1982); and Star Trek: First Contact (1996) key cyborg texts of the late twentieth century, the figure of the cyborg, and its relation to the deviant pathologised female can be understood when read against the body of the hysteric and how it was visually coded and communicated

L’Adaptation cinématographique des romans de Tahar Ben Jelloun :“L’Enfant de sable”, “La Nuit sacrée“, “La prière de l’absent”

Cette thèse porte sur l’analyse des tenants et des aboutissants de deux longs-métrages de fiction inspirés par l’œuvre de l’écrivain Tahar Ben Jelloun, à savoir La Nuit sacrée (1993) du Français Nicolas Klotz et La Prière de l’absent (1994) du Marocain Hamid Bénani.

Compte tenu du fait que le 7e Art s’est intéressé depuis toujours à tous les genres littéraires, l’auteur s’est attaché à explorer la dynamique intrinsèque des romans et des films qui font l’objet de ce travail, tout en mettant en relief les rapports que le cinéma entretient avec les représentations socioculturelles issues de ce croisement. Plutôt que se s’enfermer dans une seule démarche méthodologique, le choix a été opéré de s’ouvrir à plusieurs types d’investigation, de façon à mieux prendre en considération les spécificités des œuvres abordées.

Le premier volume de la thèse s’ouvre sur un survol de l’histoire de la littérature maghrébine d’expression française, en général, et marocaine, en particulier, et retrace son évolution, de même que les obstacles qu’il lui a fallu surmonter pour tenter de s’imposer, et qu’elle doit du reste encore surmonter de nos jours.

Après quoi, il est procédé à la définition des différents paramètres des trois romans de Tahard Ben Jelloun, à travers les fonctions et fonctionnements des composantes paratextuelles que sont les titres, les incipits et les clausules des corpus en question. Il s’agit, à ce stade, de démontrer qu’il existe une forte motivation entre ces éléments – souvent considérés comme marginaux – et le texte proprement dit.

Le travail se penche ensuite sur l’étude de chaque roman séparément, selon une approche correspondant à la nature particulière qui s’en dégage.

Après un panorama historique de la cinématographie marocaine et une brève présentation du parcours respectif des cinéastes Nicolas Klotz et Hamid Bénani, le deuxième volume se concentre, pour sa part, sur l’approche des films annoncés dans le cadre de cette étude.

L’analyse du travail d’adaptation débute par la distinction qui s’impose entre la littérature et le cinéma, aussi bien du point de vue productif que réceptif, via la mise en lumière des caractéristiques propres à ces moyens d’expression artistique. S’il apparaît légitime de confronter le cinéma et la littérature, il faut éviter de s’enfermer dans un comparatisme valorisant l’un au détriment de l’autre, sans jamais perdre de vue tout ce qui différencie ces deux formes d’écriture et les publics auxquels elles s’adressent.

Le moteur principal du travail étant l’étude du processus d’adaptation cinématographique, l’auteur s’engage par ailleurs à mettre en perspective les expériences adaptatives retenues dans ces pages, afin de les saisir sous plusieurs angles et divers niveaux de sens imbriqués, mêlant fait culturel et activité artistique.

Toute adaptation n’étant jamais que l’une des nombreuses interprétations possibles du texte originel, l’essentiel est ici d’observer, au-delà des convergences et des divergences existant entre le film et le roman, quels sont les enjeux et les objectifs de La Nuit sacrée de Klotz et de La Prière de l’absent de Bénani. À cet effet, l’accent est mis sur le concept de transfert historico-culturel cher à Michel Serceau, où le contexte sociohistorique et les conditions de fabrication jouent un rôle déterminant pour l’appropriation de l’œuvre littéraire.

Ainsi, parallèlement à l’élucidation des techniques de fabrication des films, une grande importance est accordée aux contextes historique, culturel et artistique dans lesquels ils ont vu le jour, afin de mettre en lumière la singularité du regard que chacun des réalisateurs porte sur la production du romancier. La thèse montre par là comment ces adaptations, qui émanent d’approches et de transferts bien distincts, au niveau du contexte comme des codes culturels, ont donné lieu à deux films aux différences très marquées, tant sur le plan thématique que qualitatif.

Outre la bibliographie, la filmographie et un index des noms figurant à la fin du manuscrit principal, les annexes qui composent le troisième volume offrent un fac-simile des scénarios originaux de La Nuit sacrée et de La Prière de l’absent, suivi du découpage séquentiel des deux films et de la transcription d’entretiens inédits avec les réalisateurs Nicolas Klotz et Hamid Bénani, ainsi qu’une sélection d’articles de presse.

Physicians were interviewed and asked about their perspectives on communicating with patients, media, and the ways in which the biomedical and biopsychosocial models function in the practice of medicine. Fisher’s Narrative Paradigm was the primary critical method applied to themes that emerged from the interviews. Those emergent themes included the importance of a team approach to patient care; perspectives on physicians as bad communicators; and successful communication strategies when talking to patients. Physicians rely on nurses and other support staff, but the most important partnership is that between the physician and patient. Narrative fidelity and probability are satisfied by strategies physicians use in communicating with patients: using understandable language when talking to patients; engaging in nonverbal tactics of sitting down with patients, making eye contact with patients, and making appropriate physical contact with them in the form of a handshake or a light touch on the arm. Physicians are frustrated by media’s reporting of preliminary study results that omit details as well as media’s fostering of expectations for quick diagnostic processes and magical cures within the public. Furthermore, physicians see the biomedical and biopsychosocial models becoming increasingly interdependent in the practice of medicine, which carries the story of contemporary medicine further into the realm of partnership, revealing its humanity as well as its fading paternalism.

The study comprises the testing and application of the theory of Peters (1972) as framework for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of film content. A survey of literature in the field C film content showed a lack of research on the film as semiological structure. This could be attributed to some amount of disagreement amoung researchers on the specific characteristics of film code or language. Existing theories overarticulated either technical or aesthetical aspects of film. The theory of Peters (1972) was used as framework for content analysis because it incorporates both technical and aesthetical aspects of film. Two empirical studies were conducted. in the first study the validity of Peters' theory was tested. The study was completed in three stages: (a) The compilation of a 30-item fimcriticism questionnaire. (b) The rating of two films by two groups of subjects on the mentioned questionnaire. (c) Factor analyses on the ratings of the two films. Results showed a high degree of similarity between the different factors and Peters' theoretical segments of the film. In the second study the theory of Peters (1972) was applied as framework for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of a sample of South African films. Results confirmed Peters' theory as being sufficiently comprehensive for the measurement of both technical and aesthetical aspects of film.

This thesis proposes that the merging of the theories of ‘accented’ cinema and postcolonial feminisms allows for the establishment of a theoretical framework for the analysis of (what will be argued for) an emerging postcolonial feminist film practice. In An Accented Cinema: Exilic and Diasporic Filmmaking (2001), Hamid Naficy argues that even though the experiences of diaspora and exile differ from one person to the next, films produced by diasporic filmmakers exhibit similarities at various levels. These similarities, he says, arise as a result of a tension between a very distinct connection to the native country and the need to conform to the host society in which these filmmakers now live. Mira Nair and Deepa Mehta are women filmmakers of the Indian diaspora whose films depict Indian women – in comparison with their popular cinematic construction - in unconventional and controversial ways. These characters, at some crucial point in the films, transgress their oppressive nationalist representation through the reclaiming of their bodies and sexual identities. This similarity of construction in Nair and Mehta’s female protagonists, as a result, facilitates a filtering of postcolonial feminisms throughout the narrative of their films. Even though the postcolonial feminist writings of Chandra Talpade Mohanty (1991, 1994, 1997) and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (1990, 1994, 1996, 1999) do not relate directly to the study of film or cinematic practices, their works, specifically those regarding the construction, maintenance and perpetuation of nation and nationalism in postcolonial narratives, serve as a specifically gender-focused appropriation of Naficy’s theories. Mohanty and Spivak’s arguments surrounding the use of text and, particularly, narrative as tools for the representation and empowerment of Third world women, women of colour and subaltern women, work toward illustrating how postcolonial feminisms articulate through a specific moment of ‘accented’ filmmaking: that of women filmmakers of the Indian diaspora.
