In this presentation for the Asian American Writers’ Workshop, Tamara K. Nopper analyzes the emergent discourses of “anti-Asian violence” and “Black-Asian solidarity” within historical and sociological contexts. She begins with a discussion of the importance of the 1980s and 1990s as formative moments in terms of post-Asian American Movement organizational infrastructure. She then discusses interracial violence, the coeval growth of hate crime data and legislation, and the hashtag #StopAAPIHate. Her primary concern in this discussion is to reveal what work these narrative framings do in servic

The type III–secreted proteins NopE1 and NopE2 of Bradyrhizobium japonicum contain a repeated domain of unknown function (DUF1521), which is present in a few uncharacterized proteins. A nopE1/nopE2 double mutant strain exhibited higher nodulation efficiency on Vigna radiata KPS2 than the wild type or single nopE1 or nopE2 mutants. This indicates that both proteins are effectors that functionally overlap. To test translocation into the plant cell compartment during symbiosis, NopE1 and NopE2 were fused with adenylate cyclase (cya) as reporter. A fusion with the full-length proteins or N-termina

ABSTRACT We have previously identified and characterized two novel nuclear RNA binding proteins, p34 and p37, which have been shown to interact with a family of nucleolar phosphoproteins, NOPP44/46, in Trypanosoma brucei. These proteins are nearly identical, the major difference being an 18-amino-acid insert in the N terminus of p37. In order to characterize the interaction between p34 and p37 and NOPP44/46, we have utilized an RNA interference (RNAi) cell line that specifically targets p34 and p37. Within these RNAi cells, we detected a disruption of a higher-molecular-weight complex containi

Immunoblot analyses combined with light and electron microscopic immunocytochemistry demonstrate that this polypeptide, termed Nopp52, is enriched in the nucleoli of transcriptionally active macronuclei and missing altogether from transcriptionally inert micronuclei. The cDNA sequence encoding Nopp52 predicts a polypeptide whose amino-terminal half consists of multiple acidic/serine-rich regions alternating with basic/proline-rich regions. Multiple serines loca

Antifungal activity of NOPEO was tested in vitro and in vivo against four foodborne fungi. A MIC of NOPEO against the four fungal species was 9.40 μL/mLair. ABSTRACT In the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei, the large rRNA, which is a single 3.4- to 5-kb species in most organisms, is further processed to form six distinct RNAs, two larger than 1 kb (LSU1 and LSU2) and four smaller than 220 bp. The small rRNA SR1 separates the two large RNAs, while the remaining small RNAs are clustered at the 3′ end of the precursor rRNA. One would predict that T. brucei possesses specific components to carry out these added processing events. Abstract:
Tsiolkovsky’s famous statement of humanity being in its “cradle” unintentionally points to humanity’s infantile approach to space and technogenic threats. Illusions and errors afflict space expansionism. Space activities have made nuclear war more likely. Space colonization poses catastrophic and existential threats and will produce a hierarchic world government. An Earth-oriented space program, heavy on restraints, is needed. Not Off Planet Earth measures must join the environmentalist Not On Planet Earth list, making a double NOPE agenda. Space and nuclear arms control is necessary. The Outer Space Treaty should be strengthened. Large orbital infrastructures should be avoided. Only an international consortium should alter asteroid orbits. Space cooperation, Earth-monitoring, and science should be expanded. Most important, the goal of space colonization should be abandoned. Manias of the moment, privatization and space tourism, are trivial pursuits. Protecting Oasis Earth must be humanity’s prime vocation. Human survival requires rejection of seductive but perilous technological visions.

Abstract:
Whatever anyone else says and does, it is about them. Whatever you say and do, it is about you. So writes Ruiz in The Four Agreements. When someone begins a conversation with “Now don’t take this personally,” many of us want to run and hide. We sense that what is coming will not be pleasant to hear. “Don’t take this personally” is often a prelude to criticizing: “That was really awful.” The phrase seems to give the speaker permission to say hurtful things. Would we ever say, “Don’t take this personally, but I think you’re a really great teacher”? Doubtful. Ruiz writes, however, that neither the compliments we welcome nor the complaints that make us bristle are about us. Only what we say is about us. That’s all. Of the four agreements Ruiz describes, this one seems to surprise and challenge us most. Yet it also may be the most liberating, once we understand and absorb it. Not taking anything personally unbinds us from the thoughts and opinions of the speaker. • When we do not take anything personally, we free ourselves to let others “say what they say” without affecting us. • We do not take others’ opinions as our own. We simply listen curiously. • We are less consumed by others’ words and deeds. We feel a buffer of separation. • We watch, listen, and sometimes wonder what caused a particular reaction. • We look at and examine another’s compliment or complaint as if it were her new sweater. It has nothing to do with us. “Nothing others say and do is because of us” also means that nothing we say and do is because of them. Well, that may be a bit unsettling, right? If I tell you that you are a troublemaker or that you are beautiful, wouldn’t that be about you? Nope. My compliments and criticisms are about me and my thoughts, my conclusions. Accepting this idea may take a while.
