Full textThis thesis focuses on the culture history of Amerindian groups from north-eastern North America. It aims to document one of the prehistoric cultural periods of the Eastern Townships, the early Middle Woodland period, which lasted between 400 BC and AD 500. Pottery characteristic of this period has been found by many amateur and professional archaeologists on the Vieux-Pont (BiEx-1) site in Lennoxville since its discovery. The analysis of pottery sherds revealed a high homogeneity of the rocker stamping technique on the interior face and the body of the vessels. It also allows us to propose a late occupation during the early Middle Woodland period, between AD 1 to 500-600. The comparative analysis suggests the participation of the Vieux-Pont inhabitants in the same network of interactions and exchanges as those of the Montreal, Quebec, upper-Richelieu and New England regions.

Full textThe Gaudreau site is a disturbed multicomponent site located in Southeastern Quebec, with occupations dating from the Late Paleoindian into the historic period. The Archaic occupations, noted through the presence of multiple diagnostic bifaces forms and macrotools, are the primary subject of this thesis. As no occupations can be isolated horizontally nor vertically, and no non-diagnostic artifacts can be associated with certitude, only a sample of 32 objects were analyzed. As only a small sample of the assemblage was analyzed, it is likely that more raw material source areas were used during the Archaic occupations of the site. Nonetheless, the resulting raw material networks are similar to those of the Megantic Lake region, with a strong representation of Kineo-Traveller rhyolite and Appalachian cherts. Great Lakes cherts are also present, as is Cheshire quartzite. Local silicified mudstone and quartz are weakly represented in the sample, though this is likely an effect of source proximity resulting in the near absence of completed forms made of local raw materials. The technical analysis of the sample, without control for techno-economic practices, denotes many technical recurrences within typological groupings, with no significant and recurring differences between raw materials of different source regions. Due to sample size and to the disturbed context, the significance of objects linked due to similarities in technique is doubtful. Interpersonal segmentation of operational sequences could not be determined, though the evidence appears to point towards the circulation of raw materials in multiple forms. It is to be assumed that, outside of the locally obtained raw materials, the occupants of the Gaudreau may not have had a direct access to any of the exogenous sources.

Full textOptically stimulated luminescence (OSL) has been measured on 17 ceramic sherds collected at the Mailhot-Curran site (BgFn-2), a Late Woodland archaeological site located in south west Quebec. The main goal of this project was to date the youngest prehistoric village found in the Saint Anicet cluster to establish its position in the chronological framework of the area. OSL was used conjointly with radiocarbon dating (14C) and seriation of the archaeological remains. The archaeological hypothesis proposes an occupation of this village between 1518 and 1530 A.D. (Chapdelaine 2015a). The luminescence results we present in this master’s thesis are in agreement with this proposal : we obtained an age of 490 ± 49, which corresponds to A.D. 1523 with the probability of occupation at the Mailhot-Curran site between A.D. 1474 and 1572. The luminescence dating program was carried out on local ceramics composed of fired late Quaternary Champlain Sea clays. IRSL (infrared stimulated luminescence) was preferentially used on polymineral fine-grains aliquots. A modified SAR-IRSL protocol including optical bleaching was used to measure the equivalent doses (Murray and Wintle 2000, Lamothe et al. 2004). G values were measured following the protocol proposed by Auclair et al. (2003). The Huntley-Lamothe correction for anomalous fading (Huntley and Lamothe 2001) was used to adjust the equivalent dose. Annual doses were assessed by in situ and laboratory measurements. The results we present here are affected by a large range in the dates. This variability was taken into account by statistical methods in the determination of the age of the Mailhot-Curran site occupation.

Full textDuring the Late Woodland period (AD 1000-1500), the area of the mouth of the Saguenay River was exploited by groups of St. Lawrence Iroquoians in search of marine resources, especially seals. These groups probably originated from the Quebec City region where their villages and permanent settlements were and thus developed a form of adaptation to the marine resources of the Estuary, making them the most mobile Iroquoian group in the St. Lawrence Valley. In this study, we propose that the exploitation of marine mammals was practiced in two stages, first in the Spring, during short periods by male hunters attracted by Harp seals and then in summer, by whole families taking advantage of gray and common seals. Pinnipeds were probably hunted on the foreshore or on the ice pack, with an ax or bow and arrow. Since the dishes cooked in the vessels consisted mainly of fish and land mammals, it is assumed that seal by-products were brought back in the Quebec City region and used as supplies, as raw material or as goods to exchange. We also propose the hypothesis that these excursions into the Estuary were not necessarily related to the precariousness of agriculture in the region of Quebec, since this practice was adopted later, after AD 1300 and perhaps even after AD 1400. The data used in this thesis are derived mainly from six sites located on a coastal strip extending over nearly 40 km. These sites are Ouellet (DaEk-6), Anse-aux-Pilotes-IV (DbEj-7), Cap-de-Bon-Désir (109G), site archéologique des Basques-de-l'Anse-à-la-Cave (DbEi-5), Pointe-à-Crapaud (DbEi-2) and Escoumins I (DcEi-1).
