Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper reports on a collaborative research project, conducted at the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre, London, which investigated parental involvement (including therapist-parent interactions) in their children's music therapy. It observes a tension between therapists' dual concerns on the one hand to preserve confidentiality and on the other to inform and support parents in relation to their child's music therapy. It suggests a reformulation of confidentiality based on the development of relationships founded on trust and the supported exercise of informed judgement. The collaborative research process, although unusual in music therapy, is considered to have much to offer.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Three main objectives are pursued with this study. The first is to summarise some current ideas about the origin and nature of stereotypic movements. The second is to present some music-therapeutic approaches to the phenomenon: different examples with a behaviouristic background are given; an educational approach is touched on; and Nordoff-Robbins' work is represented with a practical example. Thirdly, I discuss a case from my personal experience. My practical experience with stereotypies in music therapy was at the time of writing limited to one child. I am grateful to her for encouraging me to take some steps into a world that is, at first sight, quite bizarre and not very attractive, but one that holds some valuable possibilities for music therapeutic work.

Abstract:
This paper draws upon a dissertation for a Master of Music Therapy undertaken at the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre, London. Music therapy is not currently an established part of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) care for paediatric patients in Britain and consequently little research has emerged in this area of clinical work in the UK. This study explores the psychosocial needs of children and their families during BMT, and demonstrates how music-centred co-improvisatory music therapy can address these needs. It is written from the point of view of the therapist. Drawing from interviews with patients, families and staff who have experience of music therapy within the area of BMT, and clinical vignettes from the first author's music therapy practice1, this paper highlights four areas of psychosocial needs that music therapy can address: a sense of agency, pleasure, cultural identity and normality. Each of these is discussed in relation to both the child and the family. The study suggests that the use of a music-centred, co-improvisatory approach to music therapy appears to be especially flexible in meeting and supporting the variety of psychosocial needs experienced by both children undergoing a bone marrow transplantation and their families.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Autism is a developmental disorder which is difficult to recognize and diagnose. The present study examines the effectiveness of music therapy intervention based on improvisational techniques with the elements of Creative Music Therapy by Paul Nordoff and Clive Robbins and improvisational techniques by Tony Wigram (such as imitating, frameworking, dialogues, holding) on developmentl of children with Autism (two boys diagnosed with autism - case 1. and case 2), especially in verbal and nonverbal communication, disturbance behavior patterns, cognitive and social-emotional areas. The results indicate a positive outcome in two music therapy observing tools: Scale I Child – Therapist Relationship in Coactive Musical Experience Rating Form and Scale II Musical Communicativeness Rating Form. The tables indicate the intensity of interaction between the therapist and the subject during the music therapy process (including communication skills, cognitive skills and behavior patterns). The results of case 1 are indicated in Scale I and Scale II and show a significant effect of improvisational music therapy. The important findings from the analysis of behavior in the sessions were Stability and confidence in interpersonal musical relationship, Activity relationship developing, (scale 1.). The results of the case 2. show small changes in musical behavior when it comes to Stability and confidence in interpersonal musical relationship, but in Activity relationship developing the indicators show a lot of changes between sessions. The results of the research indicate that music therapy intervention has a positive outcome and may be an effective method to increase functioning of children with autism.

Abstract:
Abstract. Five overlapping eras or stages can be distinguished in the evolution of music therapy. The first one refers to the historical roots and ethnological sources that have influenced modern meta-theoretical perspectives and practices. The next stage marks the heterogeneous origins of modern music therapy in the 20th century that mirror psychological positions and novel clinical ideas about the healing power of music. The subsequent heyday of music therapeutic models and schools of thought yielded an enormous variety of concepts and methods such as Nordoff–Robbins music therapy, Orff music therapy, analytic music therapy, regulatory music therapy, guided imagery and music, sound work, etc. As music therapy gained in international importance, clinical applications required research on its therapeutic efficacy. According to standards of evidence-based medicine and with regard to clearly defined diagnoses, research on music therapeutic practice was the core of the fourth stage of evolution. The current stage is characterized by the emerging epistemological dissatisfaction with the paradigmatic reductionism of evidence-based medicine and by the strong will to discover the true healing nature of music. This trend has given birth to a wide spectrum of interdisciplinary hermeneutics for novel foundations of music therapy. Epigenetics, neuroplasticity, regulatory and chronobiological sciences, quantum physical philosophies, universal harmonies, spiritual and religious views, and the cultural anthropological phenomenon of esthetics and creativity have become guiding principles. This article should not be regarded as a historical treatise but rather as an attempt to identify theoretical landmarks in the evolution of modern music therapy and to elucidate the evolution of its spirit.

Abstract:
Within the framework of qualitative inquiry, Nicki Cohen sets out to present an intimate exploration of four advanced methods of music therapy practice. Posing a series of several questions to four experts Cohen concisely presents each method’s initial development, how it has adapted over time to current practice, and finally, what the future of the method may become as it pertains to the field of music therapy. She presents her own journey in achieving advanced competency and the personal journeys of each founding person of the respective methods. The book is a gentle call for educators to inspire student exploration of their own intrapersonal relationships with music and how this exploration may influence the pursuance of advanced method training.

Abstract:
Service evaluation is a professional requirement for music therapy practitioners and organisations. Yet service evaluation findings are rarely published within the professional literature, and there is limited documentation of the processes and methods of such evaluations, including the rationale, dilemmas, and challenges encountered. This is perhaps due to the perceived status, methodological weaknesses, and context-specificity of service evaluation work. Drawing on our engagement with service evaluation in diverse settings, we have become aware of its potential beyond its typical current uses in the field as well as of the need for open discussion and debate about the service evaluation tools that are available. This is where the aim of this paper lies: to introduce a service evaluation tool, the Impact Areas Questionnaire (IAQ), alongside the studies that led to its construction. Developed originally through a review of 27 individually designed service evaluation projects, this questionnaire contains a number of different impact areas. Adopting an ecological perspective, these areas refer to music therapy’s perceived impact not only on service users, but also on families/carers/friends, staff, and the organisational context in its entirety. Following its original development within Nordoff Robbins England and Wales, this questionnaire was tested in the context of Nordoff Robbins Scotland with the aim of exploring its applicability and transferability to other music therapy settings. In addition to presenting the findings of this testing, we discuss the potential use of the IAQ, which is included as an appendix to this article, in other settings and its relevance for knowledge and policy making in the field.

Abstract:
It is a common, perhaps self-evident notion that people express themselves when they are engaged in musical activity. However, there seems to be little music therapy literature that deals explicitly with theories of musical expression. This paper examines some of the existing notions of self-expression in the music therapy literature, focusing on three models: Analytic Music Therapy, Guided Imagery and Music, and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy. Implicit assumptions about the self and musical expression are explored, the latter in light of well-known musicological theories. The paper then looks at music-centered music therapy and the role of self-expression in it. In particular, the role of musical structure in self-expression is considered. It is suggested that a theory of self-expression for a music-centered practice cannot detach expressive content from the lived performance of music.

Abstract:
Music therapy acts as a separate discipline in the interdisciplinary field of science and art. Unlike music education, music therapy is aimed at developing and enhancing non-musical skills by using music as a symbol of emotional and personal growth. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of the theoretical foundations of music therapy in the field of human psychology and music pedagogy, as well as the development of music therapy models that have arisen from these theoretical approaches. The most commonly used music therapy models in special education are based on improvisational music therapy techniques, which include free improvisation therapy, creative music therapy known as the Nordoff-Robbins model, and Orff music therapy. Improvisation in these models plays a key role during the acquisition and promotion of skills. Using sounds, playing instruments, making music here and now, allows for expression and exploration, and enables children to acquire skills in different developmental domains. Finally, the paper offers an overview of the use of music therapy in education of children with developmental disabilities educating developmentally disabled children, its unique features and connections with the education through music approach, in accordance with the set-up goals of the Individual Education Plan.Key words: Individual Education Plan; music therapy; improvisational models; education; children with developmental disabilities. Korištenje zvukova, sviranje instrumenata, stvaranje glazbe ovdje i sada, omogućava izražavanje i istraživanje, a djeci pruža mogućnost samoostvarenja na različitim razvojnim područjima.
