Abstract:
Short stature is a common reason for a child to be referred for specialist opinion. Most will have no underlying pathology but dismissing a short child as normal may impose future suffering as the short adult is perceived to be psychosocially disadvantaged and to face greater health risks. Adult height, however, cannot be predicted from childhood height with any degree of certainty. Growth begins at the moment of conception and ends with epiphyseal closure some two decades later. Height, however, is not accumulated at a fixed rate throughout the growing process but consists of four distinct phases: foetal, infancy, childhood and pubertal. The intensity and duration of each phase is subject to wide variation and poor growth in any one phase does not inevitably compromise final height. To a large extent, both stature and the tempo of growth are genetically determined but social and environmental factors can have a modifying effect. For some children, poor environmental conditions can cause growth to falter but equally an improvement in quality may result in catch-up growth. The Wessex Growth Study is the first study to follow the growth of an unselected population of short normal children from school entry until final height together with controls of'average' height. A great deal of background information was also collected for each child including parental heights, birth history, social & family background, and medical history. To determine which short normal children become short adults this thesis has compared the patterns of growth of short normal children with their average height controls and assessed the impact of genetic and environmental variables on the growth pathway and final height. Before puberty, short children grew more slowly than those who are taller but the magnitude and duration of the pubertal spurt and the adolescent height gain were similar for short and control girls, and for short and control boys. The pubertal spurt of short normal boys, however, occurred, on average, some six months later than expected. Interestingly, although short normal girls had similar birth weights, skeletal delay and were just as likely as short normal boys to be considered short for family, the timing, magnitude and duration of their pubertal spurt were comparable with the control girls and with Tanner's standards. The mean height centile of both groups improved suggesting a continuing secular trend in adult stature within the UK. Nevertheless, the increase in relative height was greater for the short children implying some degree of catch-up growth, especially for boys. Indeed, short normal girls were three times more likely than short normal boys to attain an adult height below the 0.4^ centile and below their genetic potential. Some short children have become taller adults than others but in relation to their peers, a substantial number have remained short and failed to reach their genetic potential. Growth is influenced by many factors, genetic, social, environmental and emotional, but few variables were found to be predictors of the adult height of short normal children and much of the variance remains unexplained. This thesis demonstrates the individuality of the growth pathway and the difficulty in identifying those who will become short adults. Recognising which children might benefit from intervention requires a multi-professional team including the growth specialist, social worker and psychologist.

Abstract:
A number of parameters have been identified as characteristic of the walking pattern in patients with INPH. Most of these have been identified through qualitative surveys and manually conducted test batteries. In order to obtain quantitative, standardized and objective measures, which enable studies based on larger patient populations and comparable results, there is a need for a user-friendly system that can measure specific key parameters over time in a reliable manner in everyday clinical work. Step height, width and the variability in the gait cycle are such parameters which are interesting research areas for this group of patient. Problems with balance and gait are very common in other patient groups as well, particularly in neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and stroke. This is the reason that the development of this gait analyzer is performed. Giving access to a simple and objective method for estimating gait and balance ability in clinical routine investigations would increase the ability to provide the right kind of treatment, confirm treatment results, and conducting larger research studies. Therefore, this equipment can contribute to the assessment of diseases which contain impaired gait. As a first test of the usability and for the validation of accuracy and repeatability of the equipment a group of healthy volunteers was used. Results from tests on healthy subjects show god repeatability between measurements, for step width at normal gait the difference was -0,2 ±0,34 cm (mean, ±SD) and step height 0,69 ±3,34 cm. The stride time variability in the healthy group where very small 0,00048 ±0,00028 s2 with a difference between test of 0,000019 ±0,00038 s2. Three pilot patients have been tested where we have clearly seen indications of increased stride time variability and reduced step height.

Thanks to the increasing computation power the complexity and dynamism of virtual reality is continuously improving. This work aims to examine influences of weather in a landscape and the means to simulate and dynamically visualize them in real time on the current personal computer hardware. The main goal is to find quick well looking approximations rather than a complex physically correct simulation. The work covers using modern programmable GPU not only for visualization but also as a powerful simulation instrument. The main topic is water movement in the terrain and its effects on it like erosion, snow melting and moisture impact on vegetation. This requires dynamic terrain texturing and algorithms supporting fast geometry and normals updates.

Among these ethnic groups, somatotype and age are said to be the most important. Thus, the cutoff points set at 102 cm for men and 88 cm for women are reported in several studies as inadequate. The option of having several ways of measuring waist circumference related to the population studied, by using cutoff points less standardized, seems to be a must. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to analyze the existence of common numerical relationship between height and abdominal circumference (waist) in men with normal percentage of fat. METHODS: We selected from a database made of body composition analysis, 380 males, aged between 18 and 45 years. Of this population, 174 individuals were screened , aged between 18 and 25 years old, with normal range fat percentage , according to the scale of Pollock (1993), ie between 4% and 16% fat. For data processing, statistical program Excel, Microsoft included with the Software in 2007 was used, to find out the correlation between waist-height in percentages as well as fat percentage. RESULTS: In the sample of the population studied, there was a strongly positive correlation, r Pearson's of 0.768, with r2 of 0.589, the measure of waist circumference in relation to fat percentage and waist-height in percentage to a value consistent with this correlation, equivalent to 0.43. From this sample, the conclusion is that there is a percentage measure common for individuals with normal body fat percentage, and that the full action limit for the cutoff points for the waist-height is represented by the intervals between 0,43 and 0,50, which translated into the language of percentage would be between 43% and 50% of the stature of the individuals assessed, safeguarding the proper proportions of age and gender.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we study locally strictly convex surfaces from the affine differential viewpoint and generalize some tools for locally strictly submanifolds of codimension 2. We introduce a family of affine metrics on a locally strictly convex surface M in affine 4-space. Then, we define the symmetric and antisymmetric equiaffine planes associated with each metric. We show that if M is immersed in a locally atrictly convex hyperquadric, then the symmetric and the antisymmetric planes coincide and contain the affine normal to the hyperquadric. In particular, any surface immersed in a locally strictly convex hyperquadric is affine semiumbilical with respect to the symmetric or antisymmetric equiaffine planes. More generally, by using the metric of the transversal vector field on M we introduce the affine normal plane and the families of the affine distance and height functions on M. We show that the singularities of the family of the affine height functions appear at directions on the affine normal plane and the singularities of the family of the affine distance functions appear at points on the affine normal plane and the affine focal points correspond as degenerate singularities of the family of affine distance functions. Moreover we show that if M is immersed in a locally strictly convex hypersurface then the affine normal plane contains the affine normal vector to the hypersurface. Finally, we conclude that any surface immersed in a locally strictly convex hypersphere is affine semiumbilical.

"The Effect of a Splitter Plate on the Flow around a Surface-Mounted Finite Circular Cylinder." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10388/ETD-2011-09-171.

Full text
Abstract:
Splitter plates are passive flow control devices for reducing drag and suppressing vortex shedding from bluff bodies. Most studies of splitter plates involve the flow around an “infinite” circular cylinder, however, in the present study the flow around a surface-mounted finite-height circular cylinder, with a wake-mounted splitter plate, was studied experimentally in a low-speed wind tunnel using a force balance and single-component hot-wire anemometry. Four circular cylinders of aspect ratios AR = 9, 7, 5 and 3 were tested for a Reynolds number range of Re = 1.9×10^4 to 8.2×10^4. The splitter plates had lengths, relative to the cylinder diameter, of L/D = 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 5 and 7, thicknesses ranging from T/D = 0.10 and 0.15, and were the same height as the cylinder being tested. The cylinders were partially immersed in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer, where the range of boundary layer thickness relative to the cylinder diameter was δ/D = 1.4 to 1.5. Measurements were made of the mean drag force coefficient, the Strouhal number at the mid-height position, and the Strouhal number and power spectra along the cylinder height. For all four finite circular cylinders, the splitter plates were effective at reducing the magnitude of the Strouhal number, and weakening or even suppressing vortex shedding, depending on the specific combination of AR and L/D. Compared to the case of an infinite circular cylinder, the splitter plate is less effective at reducing the mean drag force coefficient of a finite circular cylinder. The largest drag reduction was obtained for the cylinder of AR = 9 and splitter plates of L/D = 1 to 3, while negligible drag reduction occurred for the shorter cylinders.
