Abstract:
A man in his 70s developed progressive normal tension glaucoma following treatment for normal pressure hydrocephalus. This treatment included cerebrospinal fluid drainage and ventriculo-peritoneal shunt insertion to lower the intracranial pressure (ICP). Subsequent retinal nerve fibre layer thinning was visible on optical coherence tomography scans and was accompanied by corresponding glaucomatous visual field defects on perimetry. These changes occurred with normal intraocular pressure, indicating the patient had progressive normal tension glaucoma. The patient’s ICP-lowering treatment for no

The paper presents a review of literature on genetic studies of normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Actually, it is known that NTG is a multifactorial disease whose development includes environmental and genetic factors. To date, a number of studies focused on NTG-associated genetic factors was performed. Several of them reported that polymorphisms of the OPA1 and OPTN genes can be genetic markers of NTG risk. The studies demonstrated that polymorphisms of genes encoding mitochondrial proteins including mitofusins 1 and 2, as well as the PARL gene, are associated with an increased NTG risk. In addi

Purpose: The aim of our study was to find out whether in patients with hypertensive glaucoma (HTG) and normotensive glaucoma (NTG), there is a change in the size of the chiasm depending on the changes in the visual field. Therefore, we retrospectively measured the width of the chiasm in the patients to whom we measured the size of the corpus geniculatum laterale in 2013. Materials and methods: The group consisted of two groups of patients. Nine with hypertensive glaucoma (HTG) and nine with normotensive glaucoma (NTG). A clinical case of normal tension glaucoma in a female patient began developing at a relatively early age (30 years) and in an atypical manner—manifesting with central visual field defects, which are not characteristic signs of glaucoma. Perimetry changes were initially observed only in the left eye, gradually progressing over a 20-year period. A central absolute scotoma also developed in the right eye over the past two years. The patient underwent ophthalmological examinations (visometry, computerized perimetry, daily tonometry, gonioscopy, ophthalmoscopy, optical coherence tomography and ele

The study provides an up-to-date overview of pathogenesis, functional and structural changes in normal tension glaucoma (NTG) and its differences from high tension glaucomas (HTG). The authors point to less known facts which make both diagnostic groups different. First of all, there are electrophysiological findings that verify pathology in the complete visual pathway in HTG in contrast to NTG where the retinal ganglion cell response is relatively normal but the abnormalities are in the visual pathway. This corresponds to the findings of functional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain with

Introduction. The term glaucoma is used to cover a wide range of diseases, whose main feature is optic neuropathy. According to the level of intraocular pressure (IOP), the open angle glaucoma is arbitrarily divided into high tension glaucoma (HTG) and normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Objective. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences of optic disc cup appearance between patients with NTG and HTG. Methods. Prospective study included 30 patients (60 eyes) with NTG and 30 patients (60 eyes) with HTG. IOP was measured by Goldmann applanation tonometry. Examination of optic disc hea
