Abstract:

With the introduction of advanced computing technologies, medical imaging increasingly entails normalization – through procedures that create, shape, and adjust comparable variables deduced from processes in the living body. The computational rationalities of imaging technologies such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and computed tomography (CT) not only determine how human bodies are envisioned and visualized, but also how they need to be aligned with apparatuses to answer experimental and diagnostic inquiries. By drawing on the theoretical concepts of computational rationality and intra-action and on ethnographic observations, we aim to disentangle processes of normalization and intra-actions of bodies and technologies in medical imaging on three levels. First, we show how, in the history of theoretical mathematics, dynamic processes were conceptualized as discrete and hence calculable. In particular, the ideas of Joseph Fourier informed the development of fMRI imaging algorithms, which are currently applied in experimental contexts. Second, we analyze how the application of these algorithms enables and determines practices in fMRI-based research. Third, we explore how bodies and technologies are aligned with tomography scanners on a very material level and thereby demonstrate the convergence of digitalization and materialization on both conceptual and physical levels, which opens up possibilities for visualizing and understanding human bodies. On a theoretical and analytical level, we argue that a critical analysis of digital imaging processes calls for scrutiny of the epistemic and operational preconditions that are actualized but concealed in the application of imaging technologies.

Abstract:
Despite its enormous promise to further our understanding of cellular processes involved in the regulation of gene expression, microarray technology generates data for which statistical pre-processing has become a necessity before any interpretation of data can begin. The process by which we distinguish (and remove) non-biological variation from biological variation is callednormalization. With a multitude of experimental designs, techniques and technologies influencing the acquisition of data, numerous approaches to normalization have been proposed in the literature. The purpose of this short review is not to add to the many suggestions that have been made, but to discuss some of the difficulties we encounter when analysing microarray data.

Abstract:
Abstract Biological processes (like microbial growth & physiological response) are usually dynamic and require the monitoring of metabolic variation at different time-points. Moreover, there is clear shift from case-control (N=2) study to multi-class (N>2) problem in current metabolomics, which is crucial for revealing the mechanisms underlying certain physiological process, disease metastasis, etc. These time-course and multi-class metabolomics have attracted great attention, and data normalization is essential for removing unwanted biological/experimental variations in these studies. However, no tool (including NOREVA 1.0 focusing only on case-control studies) is available for effectively assessing the performance of normalization method on time-course/multi-class metabolomic data. Thus, NOREVA was updated to version 2.0 by (i) realizing normalization and evaluation of both time-course and multi-class metabolomic data, (ii) integrating 144 normalization methods of a recently proposed combination strategy and (iii) identifying the well-performing methods by comprehensively assessing the largest set of normalizations (168 in total, significantly larger than those 24 in NOREVA 1.0). The significance of this update was extensively validated by case studies on benchmark datasets. All in all, NOREVA 2.0 is distinguished for its capability in identifying well-performing normalization method(s) for time-course and multi-class metabolomics, which makes it an indispensable complement to other available tools. Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of two separate parts. The first part consists of one paper and considers problems concerning spatial point processes and the second part includes three papers in the field of bioinformatics. The first part of the thesis is based on a forestry problem of estimating the number of trees in a region by using the information in an aerial photo, showing the area covered by the trees. The positions of the trees are assumed to follow either a binomial point process or a hard-core Strauss process. Furthermore, discs of equal size are used to represent the tree-crowns. We provide formulas for the expectation and the variance of the relative vacancy for both processes. The formulas are approximate for the hard-core Strauss process. Simulations indicate that the approximations are accurate.  The second part of this thesis focuses on pre-processing of microarray data. The microarray technology can be used to measure the expression of thousands of genes simultaneously in a single experiment. The technique is used to identify genes that are differentially expressed between two populations, e.g. diseased versus healthy individuals. This information can be used in several different ways, for example as diagnostic tools and in drug discovery. The microarray technique involves a number of complex experimental steps, where each step introduces variability in the data. Pre-processing aims to reduce this variation and is a crucial part of the data analysis. Paper II gives a review over several pre-processing methods. Spike-in data are used to describe how the different methods affect the sensitivity and bias of the experiment. An important step in pre-processing is dye-normalization. This normalization aims to remove the systematic differences due to the use of different dyes for coloring the samples. In Paper III a novel dye-normalization, the MC-normalization, is proposed. The idea behind this normalization is to let the channels’ individual intensities determine the correction, rather than the average intensity which is the case for the commonly used MA-normalization. Spike-in data showed that  the MC-normalization reduced the bias for the differentially expressed genes compared to the MA-normalization. The standard method for preserving patient samples for diagnostic purposes is fixation in formalin followed by embedding in paraffin (FFPE). In Paper IV we used tongue-cancer microRNA-microarray data to study the effect of FFPE-storage. We suggest that the microRNAs are not equally affected by the storage time and propose a novel procedure to remove this bias. The procedure improves the ability of the analysis to detect differentially expressed microRNAs.

"The cultural, organisational and contextual processes that might affect the implementation of massage in Lebanese neonatal intensive care units : a study informed by normalization process theory." Abstract:
Background: Care of premature infants is challenging for health care professionals. When the preterm infant is separated from its mother the parent-child interaction is impeded. In the last few decades, there has been increasing interest in the effectiveness of massage as an intervention to counter the negative physiological, clinical and behavioral consequences of prematurity and the neonatal intensive care unit environment. Aims: To establish the effectiveness of moderate pressure massage from evidence in the literature and to then explore the cultural, organisational and contextual factors that may act as facilitators and/or barriers for its future implementation in Lebanon. Methods: This thesis utilizes a two-step approach. Two literature reviews were undertaken to establish recent evidence on moderate pressure massage. A qualitative exploratory investigation was adopted as no articles were found that elucidated the contextual barriers and facilitators for massage implementation in the neonatal intensive care unit. The normalization process theory was used as a sensitizing framework to understand implementation issues and address the observed difficulties in implementing new interventions in clinical settings. This study was also concerned with context and culture as moderate pressure massage is not practiced in the Lebanese neonatal intensive care units. A purposive sample of Lebanese health care professionals and parents were recruited from three university hospitals with data generated through focus group discussions and observational notes. Framework analysis was used for the analysis and interpretation of the findings. The study drew on the principles and practice of ethnographic approaches. Findings: The findings from the two literature reviews only revealed randomized control trials that observed mostly the short-term physiological and psychological effects of moderate pressure massage. There were no studies that examined the organizational and contextual issues that need to be understood before any trial could be designed in the neonatal intensive care unit setting. The evidence from this review suggested there is a need to explore the views of health care professionals and parents on the practice of massage in the neonatal intensive care units to provide insight into the subsequent design of an intervention study that would be culturally sensitive, appropriate, and acceptable in practice. The findings from the qualitative study then revealed that despite the participants’ interest in implementing massage intervention, parents’ participation in the neonatal intensive care unit is almost absent except for breastfeeding. Participants in both groups, parents and health care professionals, highlighted the parents’ fear and anxiety. In general, nurses are in charge and parents are passive observers. Transportation difficulties, unavailability of helpful staff, and fear were reported as major barriers to parent-implemented infant moderate pressure massage; health care professionals highlighted staff attitude and resistance, workload and time constraints. Communication, gradual implementation, encouragement and support were identified by parents as potential facilitators. In comparison, having extra staff and a protocol for teaching nurses, training parents and openness to innovation were the main potential facilitators of implementation identified by health care professionals. Conclusion: This study helped to reveal the potential challenges of applying such a complex intervention as moderate pressure massage by the parents in the neonatal intensive care unit. Adopting infant massage in the Lebanese neonatal intensive care unit without preparation of health care professionals and parents would be premature. Good communication between parents and health care providers is a key element to facilitate early bonding and parent-infant interaction. Missing the opportunity to involve parents in neonatal intensive care unit care puts the family in a difficult situation to adapt to the new challenges after discharge. The findings of this study will advance current knowledge in understanding the factors that determine applicability, acceptability and feasibility of massage implementation in the neonatal intensive care unit setting. It will also assist and inform the design of future randomized control trials. The noramalization process theory was a valuable lens to guide the process of inquiry and to make sense of the emergent findings from this exploratory qualitative study.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses women’s stories and experiences of living in a relationship with domestic violence. The study is done in order to gain a deeper understanding of what the retaining mechanisms are that prevents women from leaving their partner. The research is carried out by the usage of qualitative textual analysis of autobiographical novels. With the support of the theories of shame and the normalization process it is possible to accentuate how women are staying in their relationships because of the mental degradation caused by the man. The retaining mechanisms are numerous and complex and both socio-economic and psychological factors contribute to that women stay in the relationship, which previous research also has concluded. This research concludes that the retaining mechanisms evolve and change throughout the relationship. The women’s reason for staying in the relationship is in the beginning their love for the man but later on in the relationship it evolves further into embracing the reality of the man and making the reasons for the violence legitimate

Abstract:
This dissertation presents an analysis of the discourses and processes of normalization of deaf subjects, with the central question: Which discourses about deafness, deaf people and hearing aids (prosthetics) are currently present on government policies today and how does these discourses produce processes of normalization of the deaf subject? In order to answer the question, I analyze the following materials: 1) Manual of questions and answers about CI system, 2) Technical note nº28/2013 of the Department of Continued Education, Literacy, Diversity and Inclusion / Ministry of Education - SECADI/MEC; 3) Guiding document about the project: Using the FM System in the Schooling of Students with Hearing Impairment and 4) Relatory nº 58 of CONITEC - National Comission of Incorporation of Technologies in SUS by de Ministry of Health. In these materials, I try to identify the discourses about deafness, deaf people and hearing aids that are present in the goverment policies nowadays and how these discourses produce processes of biopolitical and disciplinary normalization of deaf subjects. The concept-tools that I use to develop the analysis are discourse and normalization writen by Michel Foucault. About the methodological procedures, I take some text fragments from the studied materials and group them up, sorting by recurrencies, formulated as questions: 1) it is according to the law? 2) Liberty to choose? 3) Possibility of success, to whom? Through these groupings, I show how the discourses found in these fragments creates new subjects, which means, implanted subjects, there are not deaf nor hearing, they live in a hybrid situation, a frontier, with identities that surpass the binary poles of classifications we are used to think about in the deaf education so far. I understand that the discourses produce practical actions, I seek to show how these material contribute to the conduction and normalization of deaf subjects nowadays, developing new identities as the result of disciplinary and biopolitical investments. At the end, I invite the readers to reflect about the discourses about implanted children that joins the common school and pass by it living their truth, producing new ways of being and living the deafness, new identities of implanted deaf children.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Engenharia do Ambiente - Instituto Superior de Agronomia<br>Due to increased environmental awareness and water costs, industries have increase the need to optimize the use of water by selecting production processes more efficient, with lower water consumption or through a treatment and recirculation of water. This study comes from the Essilor Portugal need to reduce the environmental impact and costs of a water consumption of the main processes for producing ophthalmic lenses, but also the need to improve the quality of the water process due the quality requirements. One of the processes of water treating with an increased use in industrial sector, particularly in processes that require water with very stringent quality characteristics, is reverse osmosis. This process, thanks to its numerous advantages, including the high capacity and effectiveness of treatment, occupying small areas, unnecessary regeneration and energy efficiency has proven to be an economically viable technology. The objectives of this study are based on the evaluation of the environmental and financial benefits due the implementation of water treatment and recirculation by reverse osmosis, in processes of manufacturing of ophthalmic lenses, and also the analysis and optimization of operating conditions. With this system, of water treatment and recirculation, there was a significant improvement in the quality of the water for cleaning of ophthalmic lenses in the coating process (the most demanding in terms of water quality) which serves to protect the surfaces of the lenses from knocks and scratches, giving them hardness and abrasion resistance. The water needs, to clean lenses in the coating process is crucial, to ensure the pre-cleaning of the lens surface before application of the coating and quality of the product, and after the treatment system implementation there were some improvements of the coating process quality service, in terms of non quality costs and process yield. From the analysis of the environmental benefits of the project, we can verifier that there is a reduction of consumption of resources and materials, which translate into a significant positive impact, combined with reduced consumption of water and energy. The present study showed that reverse osmosis is an technology treatment, economically and environmentally feasible for the specific conditions of the project in question, allowing rapid coverage of the initial investment, managing to generate a rate return much higher than the capital cost.

Abstract:
Vidare forskning kan utforska upplevelsen hos IKBT-utbildade behandlare som inte börjat arbeta med IKBT och hos icke-behandlande kollegor på arbetsplatser där metoden implementeras.<br>Internet-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT) for different kinds of mental health issues has been presented as an alternative to traditional face-to-face treatment based on research from the last decade. Despite clinical relevance and several advantages for both patients and therapists the implementation of the method is progressing slowly in many European countries. The purpose of this study was to examine therapists’ experiences of implementing ICBT in their everyday work. Interviews were conducted with eight therapists in a Swedish public health care setting, after which a thematic analysis was made. Four main themes were defined: A new method, A new role, Premises and Learning. The therapists have an overarching mutual comprehension of ICBT and its use, which is an important aspect of the implementation. The therapists explained that colleagues that don't work with ICBT, but still have a role in the implementation, sometimes lack knowledge and have negative preconceptions which obstruct the work. Furthermore, therapists talked about organized collaboration between active therapists not being prioritized in the everyday clinical work. Results from the analysis are discussed by applying Normalization Process Theory to the findings. Further research could examine the experiences of ICBT-trained therapists who have not yet started working with ICBT and of colleagues who do not work with treatment in workplaces where ICBT is being implemented.

Abstract:
Most mental health interventions are complex as they are made up of a number of interconnected components, acting both independently and interdependently. This inherent complexity makes the development and evaluation of such interventions a complex process. Following a structured approach to the development and evaluation of complex interventions helps ensure that the process is systematic, rigorous, and replicable. In this chapter we demonstrate how systematically conducted formative research, consistent with the MRC framework, will ensure that due consideration is given to the sociocultural and health systems context. We use the case study of an ongoing complex intervention development and evaluation program in India (PREMIUM) to illustrate the application of the development and feasibility/piloting phases of the MRC framework. We describe two complementary frameworks, the Normalization Process Theory and the Theory of Change that can be used to strengthen the MRC framework for the development of mental health interventions.

Just responsibility is a transformative human rights politics for taking on the complexities, power inequalities, and social normalization of injustice itself. Just responsibility is a human rights theory of political responsibility in which we understand human rights as enjoyed and shared throughout political community (and human rights entitlements as a tool toward that end), political community as defined by its web of networks, not its boundaries, accountability as a political process of discernment, not a power relation, and leadership as a quality of political community, not of individuals within it. Found within and supported by the principles-in-practice of women’s human rights activists, this grounded normative theory of responsibility guides us in a human rights enhancing way to be accountable leaders in political transformation, taking responsibility for global injustice in a just way.

Abstract:
The 1950s began two decades of the greatest growth in the populations of institutions for intellectually disabled children and adults. During the time, physicians routinely told families to “put away” their young disabled children. The chapter considers books and articles written in the popular press by some of these parents—Peal Buck, Dale Evans Rogers, Eunice Shriver, and others. Out of these writings, parents formed a national association—the Association for Retarded Children. Despite greater public services for mentally retarded people, the public institutions continued to grow in size and numbers. By the late 1960s reports emerged about the terrible conditions in these facilities. Beginning in the 1970s, a new shift would occur in services for mentally retarded citizens—deinstitutionalization and community based programs. Using law suits, federal legislation, and the new ideology of “normalization,” advocates began a process that continues. Intellectually disabled were becoming, once again, members of communities. This direction has resulted a mixture of successes and failures.

Abstract:
Abstract Following the highly pervasive and effective use of agile methods for software development, attention has now turned to the much more difficult challenge of applying these methods in large scale, organization-wide development. However, identifying to what extent certain factors influence success and failure of sustaining large-scale agile transformations remains unclear and there is a lack of theoretical frameworks to guide such investigations. By adopting Normalization Process Theory and specifically ‘coherence’, we compare two large-scale agile transformation case studies and the different perspectives individuals and teams had when faced with the problem of operationalizing the agile method as part of their large-scale agile transformation. The key contributions of this work are: (i) this is a first attempt to present the results of a comparison between a successful and failed large-scale agile transformations; and (ii) we describe the challenges in understanding the rationale, differences, value, and roles associated with the methods to support the large-scale agile transformation. We also present future research for practitioners and academics on large-scale agile transformation.

AbstractTranslation is a culture-forming practice that transmits content into a new language system. In the process, it contributes to shaping the development of literature and knowledge and even has the capacity to balance power relationships. Because translations arise from specific occasions, serve specific purposes, belong to specific contexts, and are understood differently depending on the situation, they are a fundamental instrument of knowledge transfer and play a key role in the normalization of society and the construction of culture. The introduction to the second section of this volume focuses on the knowledge that is accessed, reclassified, and expanded during the translation process and that permits conclusions to be drawn about underlying social, discursive, and anthropological concepts.

Abstract:
Abstract The advances in manufacturing methods such as Additive manufacturing provide more flexibility in fabrication of complex geometries. Meanwhile, design tools such as aesthetic design and topology optimization algorithms have been implemented in industrial applications mostly due to the provided flexibility to manufacture freeform surfaces. Computational time and efficiency of the developed algorithms for design, manufacturing and inspection are heavily dependent on the geometric complexity of surfaces. In this paper a measure to estimate the geometric complexity is introduced based on the inherent property of a surface which is curvature. A quantitative value for the geometric complexity is defined through normalization and integration of the mean curvatures. Case studies of the implementation of the proposed measure of complexity verifies the ability of the method to predict the convergence of a surface fitting algorithm based on the geometric complexity of the input model.

Abstract:
There is an increased interest in sustainability assessment of manufacturing systems and processes because of the growing global interest in sustainable manufacturing practices. The current sustainability assessment models present a holistic approach, e.g. LCA, without much focus on process specific details. This paper uses a ‘XSI’ approach for defining sustainability indices (e.g. Energy Sustainability Index, ESI). These sustainability metrics can quantify machining processes in terms of impact on the environment and power consumption in a flexible manner, so that various material removal processes can be rated on a uniform scale. In addition, the concept of Normalization, with respect to the ‘feature-of-interest’ is introduced, thus presenting a flexible rating system in terms of process types (turning, milling etc.) and perspectives (material removal, quality etc.). A user-friendly calculator is developed, which converts a set of inputs for the machining scenario into a set of measurable rating quantities and indices including but not limited to production rate, production cost, tool life/cost, energy consumption and environmental burden. This will enable the manufacturing engineer to make an informed decision about parameter selection and process design for sustainability. Machining of hard-to-machine materials such as Titanium Alloys is such a scenario, which is used as a case study to validate the proposed approach.

Abstract:
BP’s Natural Gas Liquids business unit (NGLBU) has conducted integrity investigation and mitigation activities on its pipelines and has been following this best practice for numerous years. In recent times, NGLBU’s data management initiatives focused on establishing an enterprise Geographic Information System (GIS) coupled tightly with a derivative of the Pipeline Open Data Standard (PODS) data model. During successful implementation of the GIS, an analysis identified gaps in existing data management processes for pipeline integrity information. Consequently, the business unit adopted Baseline Technology’s Pipeline Information Control System (PICS) and its modules to support the pipeline integrity decision-making process on its 9000km of pipeline. The PICS implementation leverages the existing GIS implementation while addressing a number of unresolved data management and integration issues, including: • Integration of inline inspection with excavation results; • Migration of above ground surveys to a common repository; • Integration of multiple inline inspections; • Facilitation of corrosion growth modeling; • Structured process for prioritization of remediation; • Structured process for integration of inline inspections with risk parameters; • Defined data collection, storage, and integration standards. Data management solutions based solely on a GIS require pipeline surveys without explicit positional information to be converted into a common linear reference system (typically chainage or stationing) such that disparate data sets may be overlaid and compared. This conversion, or spatial normalization, process is where much of the data management effort is spent and is often prone to error introduction. Even when small errors are introduced, the normalization process is often performed such that it is not auditable. If the underlying spatial errors are not reported, addressed, and understood, the value of the data integration and any subsequent analysis of the combined data set is questionable.

Abstract:
Abstract As a novel manufacturing technology additive manufacturing (AM) has advantages such as energy saving, reduced material waste, faster design-to-build time, design optimization, reduction in manufacturing steps, and product customization compared to conventional manufacturing processes. Heat treatment is widely used to improve the properties of conventional manufactured steel parts. The response of additively manufactured steel parts to heat treatment may be different from conventionally manufactured steel parts due to variations in microstructure. An understanding of heat treatment processes for additively manufactured steel parts is necessary to develop their heat treatment process parameters. In the present work 20MnCr5 steel was selected to investigate the carburization heat treatment of additively manufactured parts. These parts were fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) for the carburization study. It was found that the AM parts fabricated by the SLM process show the microstructure of tempered martensite while the microstructure of as-received wrought part is ferrite and pearlite. It was also experimentally found that the SLM process decarburizes the entire SLM part. Before carburizing, a normalization process was conducted on both SLM and wrought 20MnCr5 parts to reduce the effect of the pre-carburizing microstructure. The objective of this project is to determine the carburization performance of additively manufactured steel parts. The results for the SLM parts in terms of carbon concentration and microhardness profiles are compared with the results for the wrought steel. It was found that the carburized SLM part in the present work has higher carbon concentration near the surface, deeper case depth, and higher total carbon flux than the carburized wrought part.

Abstract:
The efficiency of combustion process in diesel engine depends on the spray characteristics. The most importantof them are droplet size and velocity distributions. There are four methods which are used for describing the droplet size distributions: empirical, maximum entropy formalism (MEF), discrete probability function (DPF) and stochastic method. The MEF assumes that spray formation is a random process that can be described using the principle of maximum entropy. DPF method is a combination of random and non-random processes when the drop-size distribution appears from fluctuations in the initial conditions. Under the DPF approach the spray formation is divided into following steps: liquid breakup, ligaments separation, breakup of ligaments into fragments, fragment breakup into droplets. The stochastic breakup model assumes that the probability of formation of daughter droplet breakup size is independent of its parent size (a fractal scaling of breakup has been identified). This paper presents an investigation into the application of MEF model for distribution of biodiesel droplets. We used the model approach with the constraints: normalization, mass conservation, momentum conservation and surface energy conservation. The resulting probability density function (PDF) for velocity and droplet size is obtained by maximizing the Shannon entropy. We also used the new numerical algorithm to improve the model accuracy. The PDF for droplets diameters with different Weber numbers were calculated for both diesel and biodiesel fuels. The MEF predictions were compared against the experimental data for diesel and biodiesel droplet distribution with different injection pressure. According to the maximum entropy method, the influence of fuel thermodynamic properties on the parameters of drop-size and velocity distribution function forfuel sprays has been analysed.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/ILASS2017.2017.4769
