Abstract:
Scholarly reception of the abstract expressionist painter Norman Lewis (1909–79) has focused on the overwhelming racist exclusion of the painter’s oeuvre from the canon and sought to construct a vocabulary for his complex practice. Building on this foundational scholarship, this article asks what impact the painter’s significant participation in the Black left (from the 1930s through his late career in the 1970s) had on his art production. Alongside activists like W. E. B. Du Bois, Harold Cruse, and Paul Robeson, Lewis participated in a decades-long debate about the role of Black labor in the

The present article investigates Mailer's fiction and non-fiction in relation to Rank's views on creativity. Both Rank and Mailer are interpreted as examples of artists who invent themselves, the former as an intuitive therapist, the latter as the creator of a public and private persona. In Mailer's case, projections of the persona are traced to his fictional alter egos. Special attention is given to analyzing the significance of Mailer's creation of fictional protagonists who act out antisocial, anarchic impulses in a seemingly conflict-free way. Orthodoxy maintains that English political thinking before Hobbes was based upon an unphilosophical, precedent-bound reading of history. According to J. G. A. Pocock, Sir Edward Coke typically held that English customary law was pre-historical and that the continuity of English traditions had never been broken by conquest. Conquerors possessed sovereign power; in England there had been no conqueror; so there was no supra-legal sovereign. English liberty was deducible from history.
