Abstract:

Abstract:

“Fat lady in the theatre,” “Fat woman in car,” and “Mother of 9 children” are some of the roles attributed to Uma Devi Khatri, aka Tun Tun, in her Wikipedia filmography. Tun Tun, regularly typecast and often appearing for a few seconds without any narrative consequence, was a household name, yet her star persona has yet to garner much attention. This essay takes up this lack of attention, scholarly and archival, to speculate on a connection between Tun Tun's corporeal excess and the narrative inconsequentiality she was expected to occupy. Looking beyond her image as a superfluous comedienne, this essay investigates the narrative of Tun Tun as an ambiguous one that can be interpreted, in spite of its subversive potential, as reinforcing normative codes of ideal womanhood.

Abstract:
The paper considers an issue of extending the service life of eight-axle tank cars for alkylbenzenesulfonic acid by modernization of car design. The modernization included technical diagnostics of cars with basic design, repair or replacement of car parts and equipment, calculations and tests of modernized car design. During the technical diagnostics of cars the authors carried out a statistical analysis of failures, determined a speed of corrosion of car elements in operation and predicted a residual service life. On the basis of results of technical diagnostics the authors created a finite element model of the car, formulated normative calculations and carried out necessary tests on natural samples of cars. As a result, calculations and tests confirmed the reliability of gained data, justified the service life of the modernized car design.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
In The Sources of Normativity, Christine Korsgaard argues that in order to avoid the threat of moral skepticism, our moral theories must show how the claims they make about the nature of our actions obligate us to act morally. A theory that can justify the normativity of morality in this way answers what Korsgaard calls “the normative question.” Although Korsgaard claims that only Kantian theories of morality, such as her own, can answer the normative question, I argue that Adam Smith’s sentimentalist moral theory, as presented in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, can answer the normative question as well. As a result, it is possible to respond to the moral skeptic in the way Korsgaard outlines without accepting some of the theoretical drawbacks of Korsgaard’s own moral theory.

Frew, Katherine Elizabeth. "Routine sedation : towards a normative understanding of sedation in palliative care." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/2158.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the practice of sedation in hospice palliative care. Internationally this has been a controversial subject for over 20 years, with the use of sedation considered to be on a spectrum between euthanasia and symptom control at the end of life. This is a complex area of study, incorporating not only technical details regarding drugs and doses, but also relating to underlying values regarding end of life care. In the UK end of life care has developed from the ‘hospice movement’ of the 1960s, into the broad and far reaching approach of palliative care. Alongside this development, palliative care has espoused its own ‘ethos’ and values, evident in much of the literature in this area. This thesis presents the data from an ethnographic study in a UK hospice. The aim of the study was to develop a normative understanding of the use of sedation in hospice palliative care. The ethnography allowed an in depth understanding of this practice through prolonged immersion in the field of study. This enabled the practice of sedation to be understood as a process, or series of decisions, based upon a tacit understanding of a patient’s proximity to death. This was driven by the desire of hospice staff to bring about a comfortable and peaceful death, which was in turn motivated by the underpinning values, of the individual, the organisation, and of the approach of palliative care. This thesis has important implications for the future: for the specific use of sedative drugs in hospice palliative care, as well as for the broader issues in palliative care concerning decision-making at the end of life. A new definition for sedation at the end of life is constructed, relating particularly to, as it is derived from, the practice and underpinning values of hospice palliative care in the UK. Furthermore, as the evolving and changing nature of UK palliative care is considered, the capacity for hospice palliative care to enable the expression of different values, which manifest as a result of the changes in palliative care, represents a challenge to one of the core principles of the approach; patient centred care. This thesis introduces and considers values based practice as an approach which may facilitate the identification of values in decision-making, and reorientate care towards a more ‘patient-values-centred’ approach.

Abstract:
This study explores the relationship between ideals of motherhood and heterosexual normativity, from the perspective of women at the margins of these discourses. The title, In the shadow of Motherhood, illustrates the overriding power of the image of motherhood to marginalise alternative experiences. The concept of motherhood, like that of Family, has traditionally signalled the reproduction of the normative; it does not usually encompass the critical scrutiny that would allow for diverse experiences of mothering. Theoretically, the study is located within the fields of feminist sociology and inclusive family studies in productive dialogue with queer notions of gender and sexuality. Methodologically, it is inspired by narrative analysis and consists of in-depth interviews with eight lesbian, bisexual and heterosexual women grappling with different experiences of motherhood and mothering practices. Some of them identify as mothers while others do not, but by not being biogenetic mothers within a heterosexual relationship they share the position of being outside of what is often considered normal, natural and desirable. The analysis reveals a considerable variation in the positions, experiences and identities of the participants, particularly in regards to changes over time, which cannot be reduced to binary categories such as heterosexual/lesbian, biological/non-biological, mother/childless or voluntary/involuntary childlessness. The analysis also exposes a deep tension between ideologies of motherhood and lived experiences of care practices. Furthermore, from the perspective of the participants, the boundaries between inclusion and exclusion reinforce and challenge each other, creating spaces of both individual and collective resistance. The study illuminates the need to shift the location of these experiences from the margins to the centre not only in sociological research of family and gender, but also within feminist sociology.

This book is a collection of the academic contributions presented at the conference entitled "Lessons from earthquakes: sources of vulnerability, new design strategies and regulatory developments" which was held at Chianciano Terme on 8 October 2010. The issues addressed are central to Seismic Engineering and comprise a wide range of arguments on both consolidated subjects and innovative aspects in the sector. Among these, appropriate attention is devoted to: analysis of the structural instability revealed on the occasion of seismic events and the lessons that can be drawn from the same; the procedures of assessment of the existing buildings, starting from the phase of monitoring and diagnostics through to the definition of the most opportune intervention techniques; the use of composite materials and alternative methods of seismic protection; non-linear field modelling relating to regular and non-regular structures; and finally, the development of the methods of calculation that have characterised the evolution of the regulatory codes.

Abstract:
Normative capabilities in multi-agent systems (MAS) can be represented within agents, separately as institutions, or a blend of the two. This paper addresses how to extend the principles of open MAS to the provision of normative reasoning capabilities, which are currently either embedded in existing MAS platforms - tightly coupled and inaccessible - or not present. We use a resource-oriented architecture (ROA) pattern, that we call deontic sensors, to make normative reasoning part of an open MAS architecture. The pattern specifies how to loosely couple MAS and normative frameworks, such that each is agnostic of the other, while augmenting the brute facts that an agent perceives with institutional facts, that capture each institution's interpretation of an agent's action. In consequence, a MAS without normative capabilities can acquire them, and an embedded normative framework can be de-coupled and opened to other MAS platforms. More importantly, the deontic sensor pattern allows normative reasoning to be published as services, opening routes to certification and re-use, creation of (formalized) trust and non-specialist access to "on demand'' normative reasoning.

Abstract:
Engineering and psychophysiological car following models emerge in the late 1950s (Saifuzzaman & Zheng, 2014). Such models differ in their ground concepts and explanatory mechanisms, but both assume a fundamental tenet: following each other, drivers invariably attempt to couple, keeping safety distance. More recent models focus on the spontaneous emergence of traffic jams that results from the properties of a system of interacting vehicles (i.e., without bottlenecks). In an experimental setting Sugiyama et al., (2008) have successfully recreated the conditions that allow the observation of the typical soliton wave going backwards through several car clusters. When certain speed, density and inter-vehicular distance join, so do traffic jams. Some of us have built upon these and other factors (e.g., wave movement in nature) exploring the mathematical properties of a system with three incognita that also needs three variables to be solved (Melchor & Sánchez, 2014). Two canonical car-following techniques emerge as a consequence: Driving to keep safety Distance (DD) vs Inertia (DI). Also a basic question: can drivers actually understand and follow either way, or do they stick to a basic normative driving behavior? This paper summarizes the results after three experimental studies done with a driving simulator. Several performance measures from individual drivers (accelerations, decelerations, average speed, distance to leader, and so on) were taken. As an overall indicator, results consistently announce in the three studies that DI trips consume less fuel (about 20%) than DD ones.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/CIT2016.2016.3406

In this paper the elasto-plastic behavior of the toe cap safety footwear component for three different Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) combined with new geometric models, was analyzed. The normative quasi-static compression test in the context of the experimental validation of different prototypes, and the conceptual orientation of those models with numerical simulation were performed. The study aimed to examine the potential energy absorption capacity for a substantial thickness reduction of slim toe cap models. A non-linear Finite Element Analysis of the plastic deformation mode with material properties as strain hardening of True-Stress-Strain extrapolated curves was considered. From experimental results it was found that the evolved geometric model had significant influence on the static stiffness and toe cap damage for a weight saving range of approx. 35 to 40%, compared with the original steel toe cap.

Abstract:
Design for Manufacturing (DfM) involves trade-offs between design objectives and manufacturing cost/efficiency. However, contemporary software packages consider DfM in a unilateral (manufacturing centric) way. Ad-hoc rating systems used in these packages can lead to bad decisions. Also, uncertainty in estimating design attributes and manufacturing costs must be accounted for. This paper presents a theoretical framework for DfM that incorporates the above factors. The applicability and rationality of Benefit-Cost analysis to DfM is demonstrated. Present value of net benefit is proposed as the only rational measure of DfM. A domain independent shell for DfM analysis is developed. The shell can be customized for evaluating both technical feasibility and economics of manufacturing.

Abstract:
A simplified method has been developed for assessing the loading of the load-bearing systems of passenger cars under thermal loading with a fire spot with limited properties. A system of simplifications for realizing a combustion spot is substantiated. A method for its implementation is proposed. The description of the object of research is given with the necessary thoroughness of presentation. A finite element scheme has been developed and adapted, taking into account the application of thermal loads in the system of an industrial software complex that implements the finite element method. Verification of the finite element scheme was carried out taking into account full-scale normative experiments. A conclusion is made about the possibility of the applicability of the finite element scheme for the study. Numerical experiments have been carried out to assess the carrying capacity of the body of a double-deck passenger car when it is exposed to a combustion center with known thermal parameters. The experiments were built and performed in a finite element method system. The results of simulations in the affected zone of the alleged fire were obtained for the conditional spot of its location. Comparison of the results with the static loading mode of the car body is considered. The analysis of the results obtained is carried out. A conclusion is given on the effect of a small localization fire on the carrying capacity of the car body. The proposed method is evaluated taking into account the possibility of further use

Abstract:
In this paper the normative impact-crash test in the context of the experimental validation of the last and final approved prototype model is focused. The project S3 – Safety Slim Shoe presents the potential to reduce the weight in safety toe cap components combining a new geometric redesign deeply associated to local stiffeners to realize the full potential of AHSS – Advanced High Strength Steels. The investigation aimed to investigate the potential energy absorption capacity for a substantial thickness reduction of a new engineering geometry with evaluative corrections for the specific impact test performance. A set of FEA - Finite Element Analysis of the plastic deformation mode was performed, and some material parameters such as: hardening effects and sensitivity for material constitutive parameters with demanding test strain rates were carried out. Experimental results of the toe cap deformation behavior confront a weight saving range of over 40%, compared with the original steel toe cap.

In ASME 2017 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
Procedure-based design is well-established, supporting engineers via expert knowledge codified in resources such as handbooks, tables, and heuristic if-then rules of thumb. These procedures enable even inexperienced designers to benefit from the knowledge obtained by more experienced counterparts through years of practice and discovery. While procedural approaches have many advantages, they do have limitations. They tend to produce only satisficing, rather than optimal, solutions. In addition, they are based on historical designs, so offer little assistance for new system types, and are often descriptive rather than normative in nature. In contrast, normative methods — such as constrained optimization — can resolve many of these issues, but at the cost of significant development effort. Here we present a synergistic hybrid strategy with the objective of capitalizing on established procedure-based design methods for a subset of design problem elements, while incorporating normative strategies for the remaining elements. A design procedure is analyzed to identify steps that involve specification of design variables, and a subset of rule-based steps that could be replaced with optimization algorithms. A single-stage spur gear train design example is used to illustrate this process, and for comparing alternative hybrid solution strategies. Initial results indicate that solution quality can be improved significantly over purely procedure-based design when incorporating limited optimization elements, while maintaining a reasonable level of additional modeling effort.

Abstract:
This profile establishes a basic taxonomy of IPv6 capabilities, defined in terms of IETF specifications, resulting in specific capability labels for common network functions and usage scenarios. The profile maps each such labeled capability to one or more specific technical specifications, or parts of specifications. Each labeled capability adopts by reference the normative requirements of the cited specifications. In rare cases the profile may augment or modify the normative requirements of a base specification. The defined capability labels effectively form a vocabulary for expressing IPv6 requirements for, and documenting the IPv6 capabilities of, specific products. It is expected that, when combined with specific acquisition and product testing programs, this profile can facilitate the efficient adoption of IPv6 technologies in many industry sectors.

Myrttinen, Henri. Connecting the Dots: Arms Control, Disarmament and the Women Peace and Security Agenda. UNIDIR, October 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.37559/gen/20/01.

Full text
Abstract:
Connecting the Dots examines the normative and practical overlaps and connections of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda with the field of arms control and disarmament. Using an original approach to gender-responsive arms control and disarmament measures that is structured around the four WPS pillars of participation, prevention, protection, and relief and recovery, this report identifies current best practices and areas for further action. The report shows that further integration can bring benefits for both fields. For the arms control and disarmament community, the WPS pillars give structure and guidance to the comprehensive integration of gender perspectives, which thus far has been a piecemeal effort. For WPS policy actors and practitioners, engaging with arms control and disarmament helps to operationalize the WPS agenda, giving concrete substance to each of its pillars.

Abstract:
Canadians living in rural communities are diverse, with individual communities defined by unique strengths and challenges that impact their health needs. Understanding rural health needs is a complex undertaking, with many challenges pertaining to engagement, research, and policy development. In order to address these challenges, it is imperative to understand the unique characteristics of rural communities as well as to ensure that the voices of rural and remote communities are prioritized in the development and implementation of rural health research programs and policy. Effective community engagement is essential in order to establish rural-normative programs and policies to improve the health of individuals living in rural, remote, and northern communities. This report was informed by a community engagement workshop held in Golden Lake, Ontario in October 2019. Workshop attendees were comprised of residents from communities within the Madawaska Valley, community health care professionals, students and researchers from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, and international researchers from Australia, Sweden, and Austria. The themes identified throughout the workshop included community strengths and initiatives that are working well, challenges and concerns faced by the community in the context of health, and suggestions to build on strengths and address challenges to improve the health of residents in the Madawaska Valley.

Niebler, Rebecca. Abfallwirtschaftliche Geschäftsmodelle für Textilien in der Circular Economy. Sonderforschungsgruppe Institutionenanalyse, September 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.46850/sofia.9783941627833.

Full text
Abstract:
This master thesis explores the challenges for waste management business models in the field of textiles regarding the requirements of the circular economy, as well as improvement potentials in the current framework conditions. It is concerned with the research question: "Is it advisable to change the frame-work conditions at meso or macro level, with regard to business models for waste management companies in the textile sector that are oriented towards the requirements of the circular economy, and - if so - in what way?” The approach of the study is based on the delta analysis of the e Society for Institutional Analysis at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. It compares the target state of the normative requirements with the actual state of the textile and waste management framework conditions and attempts to identify the gaps (the delta). Based on the delta, it develops approaches that are intended to help reduce the gaps. The thesis develops three business models for the target year 2025 in different areas: an exchange platform for sorters, recyclers and designers, an automatic sorting plant and a plant for fibre-to-fibre recycling of mixed materials. It is becoming clear that these business models cannot meet the target requirements for the circular economy. The analysis identifies the remaining gaps in the framework conditions as the main problem. For example, insufficient innovation impulses and the lack of competitiveness of secondary raw materials inhibit the actors from applying and using new technologies and business models. Restricted access to knowledge and information, as well as a lack of transparency between the actors, also prove to be problematic. In order to answer the research question, the study recommends altering the framework conditions at meso and macro level. It proposes a platform for cooperation between designers, the introduction of a material declaration system and an eco-design guideline for textiles as possible development options. In addition, this work offers a matrix of criteria to help the actors test and improve their new waste management business models regarding their suitability for the circular economy. The analysis is carried out from an outsider's perspective on the entire textile industry. It therefore cannot cover and deal with all aspects and individual circumstances of each player in detail. The necessary changes in the framework conditions that have been identified can therefore be used as a basis for further investigations.
