Abstract:
Prior research has presented the moderating role of normative evaluations in the relationship between the impulsive buying trait and consumers’ buying behaviors. In this article the authors show that consumer tendency to buy something spontaneous, unreflectively and immediately can be perceived as a factor which describes buying impulsiveness. This article also shows conceptual and empirical evidence that there is some support for the moderating role of normative evaluations in the relationship between buying impulsiveness and impulse buying behaviors. Significance occurs when consumers believe that act on impulse is suitable. The result suggests that consumers’ normative evaluation can moderate the link between the trait and behavioral aspects of impulse buying.

Abstract:
Planning decisions have considerable impacts on both natural and built environments. The impacts of these decisions may remain for many decades and many are irreversible. In order to gain a better understanding of these long-standing impacts, planners require a systematic approach to evaluate the planning policy instruments utilised. The literature on planning evaluation shows that most studies have taken a conformance-based evaluation approach, where the success of a planning policy instrument is based on the degree of conformity between the policy outcomes and its intended objectives. While evaluating such criteria is necessary, it is hardly ever sufficient largely because of unintended effects. This paper proposes an impact-based approach to planning evaluation that incorporates all the impacts, intended and otherwise, that a planning policy instrument may bring about, irrespective of the initial objectives of the policy. Using a number of economic and planning theories, this paper argues that, in addition to conformance and performance, other normative evaluation criteria, such as, efficiency, equity, social and political acceptability, and institutional arrangements, should be included to emphasise the importance of planning decisions and their substantial impacts on quality of life, social justice, and sustainability.

Abstract:
In the article for the first time both in Russian and foreign investigation the concept of cinematology as film and arts studies in general as a normative academic discipline is introduced. The authors assert that the key feature of the normative science is the formulation of the mostly non-evident, though sometimes evident evaluations and norms. The authors argue against the assertion that cinema and arts studies are mainly a descriptive discipline that doesnt contain any even obscure evaluations or recommendations. Cinema and arts studies take off actual experience of artistic perception, in particular the perception of the works of art, and attempt at description and generalization of this experience. The latter always contains both estimation of particular acts of artistic perception, art styles and trends, and recommendations concerning what may be evaluated ad genuine tragedy, genuine beauty, film-masterpiece. Assertions functioning as imperatives, where the predicate is implies ought to be, play the focus role in film studies. This two-dimensional mode of thinking composes inner form of all normative sciences constantly switching from passive contemplative speech usage to active pragmatist one. Approaching empirically, the authors argue, that there always evaluation and ambiguous, descriptive statements become apparent in film studies. This fact gives reason to refer film studies to normative disciplines.

Abstract:
To evaluate the reliability and validity of a Z-score normative EEG database for Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA), EEG digital samples (2 second intervals sampled 128 Hz, 1 to 2 minutes eyes closed) were acquired from 106 normal subjects, and the cross-spectrum was computed and multiplied by the Key Institute's LORETA 2,394 gray matter pixel T Matrix. After a log10 transform or a Box-Cox transform the mean and standard deviation of the *.lor files were computed for each of the 2,394 gray matter pixels, from 1 to 30 Hz, for each of the subjects. Tests of Gaussianity were computed in order to best approximate a normal distribution for each frequency and gray matter pixel. The relative sensitivity of a Z-score database was computed by measuring the approximation to a Gaussian distribution. The validity of the LORETA normative database was evaluated by the degree to which confirmed brain pathologies were localized using the LORETA normative database. Log10 and Box-Cox transforms approximated Gaussian distribution in the range of 95.64% to 99.75% accuracy. The percentage of normative Z-score values at 2 standard deviations ranged from 1.21% to 3.54%, and the percentage of Z-scores at 3 standard deviations ranged from 0% to 0.83%. Left temporal lobe epilepsy, right sensory motor hematoma and a right hemisphere stroke exhibited maximum Z-score deviations in the same locations as the pathologies. We conclude: (1) Adequate approximation to a Gaussian distribution can be achieved using LORETA by using a log10 transform or a Box-Cox transform and parametric statistics, (2) a Z-Score normative database is valid with adequate sensitivity when using LORETA, and (3) the Z-score LORETA normative database also consistently localized known pathologies to the expected Brodmann areas as an hypothesis test based on the surface EEG before computing LORETA.

Rogers, Katherine Helen. "Knowing versus liking : separating normative knowledge from evaluation in impressions." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/36885.

Abstract:
Accurately perceiving the personality of the average person corresponds broadly with stereotype accuracy – the generalizability of one’s impressions to other individuals. Previous research has demonstrated that the normative personality profile is highly socially desirable (Borkenau & Zaltauskas, 2009; Wood, Gosling & Potter, 2007). Due to the highly evaluative nature of the normative personality profile, individual differences in perceiving others either more or less positively – the halo effect – is often considered an evaluative artifact that is either statistically removed or minimized through item selection. However, what if individual differences in normative judgments reflect not just evaluative tendencies but also individual differences in generalized knowledge? In Study 1, 1027 participants watched video clips and rated the personality of targets using the Big Five Inventory (BFI; John & Srivastava, 1999) and also completed personality self reports. Using the average self-reports and the social desirability of the personality items (Paulhus, 2009) to predict impressions, we find that despite a high correlation between the normative profile and social desirability, the two independently predict ratings of others. Further, in Study 2 using a modified Q-sort, perceivers (Sample 1 N = 77, Sample 2 N = 88, Sample 3 N = 62) sorted an abbreviated 24-item version of the BFI (John & Srivastava, 1999) describing the average person’s personality. On average, perceivers had accurate knowledge of the average individual’s personality. Additionally, perceivers with greater accuracy in describing the average person rated the personality of ten videotaped targets or the personality of other participants in the round-robin more normatively. This strongly suggests that individual differences in normative judgments are not simply evaluative, but also include a component of knowledge regarding the average personality. Further, consistent with these effects representing separate constructs, well-adjusted individuals achieve greater levels of normative accuracy by having greater normative knowledge, while perceivers who explicitly evaluate others more positively achieve greater normative accuracy by rating others in a more socially desirable manner.

Coyle, Douglas. "The development and application of a normative framework for considering uncertainty and variability in economic evaluation." Thesis, Brunel University, 2004. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/7648.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is in the development and application of a normative framework for handling both variability and uncertainty in making decisions using economic evaluation. The framework builds on the recent work which takes an intuitive Bayesian approach to handling uncertainty as well as adding a similar approach for the handling of variability. The technique of stratified cost effectiveness analysis is introduced as an innovative, intuitive and theoretically sound basis for consideration of variability with respect to cost effectiveness. The technique requires the identification of patient strata where there are differences between strata but individual strata are relatively homogenous. For handling uncertainty, the normative framework requires a twofold approach. First, the cost effectiveness of therapies within each patient stratum must be assessed using probabilistic analysis. Secondly, techniques for estimation of the expected value of perfect information should be applied to determine an efficient research plan for the disease of interest. For the latter, a new technique for estimating EVPI based on quadrature is described which is both accurate and allows simpler calculation of the expected value of sample information. In addition the unit normal loss integral method previously ignored as a method of estimating EVPPI is shown to be appropriate in specific circumstances. The normative framework is applied to decisions relating to the public funding of the treatment of osteoporosis in the province of Ontario. The optimal limited use criteria would be to fund treatment with alendronate for women aged 75 years and over with previous fracture and 77 years and over with no previous fracture. An efficient research plan would fund a randomised controlled trial comparing etidronate to no therapy with a sample size of 640. Certain other research studies are of lesser value. Subsequent to the analysis contained in this thesis, the province of Ontario revised there limited use criteria to be broadly in line with the conclusions of this analysis. Thus, the application of the framework to this area demonstrates both its feasibility and acceptability. The normative framework developed in this thesis provides an optimal solution for decision makers in terms of handling uncertainty and variability in economic evaluation. Further research refining methods for estimating information value and considering other forms of uncertainty within models will enhance the framework.

Warrington, Jeffrey James. "A critique of the normative assumptions of civil society and an evaluation of its relationship to democracy." Thesis, Swansea University, 2003. https://cronfa.swan.ac.uk/Record/cronfa43106.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers a critique of the normative assumptions of the concept of civil society and an evaluation of its relationship to democracy in contemporary political discourse. The proposition is that civil society represents the only feasible aspect of society that can maintain any democratic expansion. But I will argue that civil society must first of all detach itself from liberal theory. To this end, a number of reconstructions of the 'assumed norms' of what constitutes democracy will be made. Democracy is in crisis, but the legitimacy of political systems remains. The purpose of the reconstructions in this thesis is to assess the factors that contribute to democratic development and those that mitigate against it. The method employed is an immanent critique of the normative bases of civil society - privacy, publicity, plurality and legality - and their reconsideration. Two sets of criteria must be met in these reconstructions: those required by democracy (as an empowerment in society), and those that maintain the connections between theory and the actual. Each of these norms contains a number of principles and assumptions, axiomatic in liberal theory but problematic for civil society, and so for democracy. When subjected to critical enquiry, some of these references to political and social freedoms are antithetical to the conditions of democratic development. The conclusions arrived at point to the reconstruction of the concept of privacy, and how this relates to what is understood to be 'private' is basic to democracy. The factors that contribute toward this legitimacy (privatism) impedes civil society, and consequently the development of democracy.

Thesis, Högskolan i Jönköping, Internationella Handelshögskolan, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-35844.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The portrayal of men and women in various contexts and genderedrelated research is a field of interest that has been extensively dealt with for more than three decades. Still, an acknowledgement of the “truth” is far from being attained. In marketing, the power of storytelling has revolutionized the way stories are used in business practice. This research focus on gender differences in marketing by adding storytelling as a parameter. Purpose: This thesis was conducted to investigate if men and women's perceptions differ in terms of decoding elements in a story. The purpose was answered by two research questions: (1) Do men and women’s perceptions differ in terms of decoding a message or theme in storytelling? (2) If so, what elements plays major roles? Method: This thesis takes on a triangulation method and uses an interpretivist research paradigm with a deductive research approach to explore the purpose. This was a qualitative study where primary data was collected using two qualitative research methods, and secondary data from peer-reviewed articles containing relevant theories to this research. Conclusion: The conclusion is made that if marketers aims to target women, they should focus to create a highly emotional story that contains sentimental elements and shows the importance of family, relationships and love. If they want to target the male audience, they should focus on creating a story that includes a character that is distinctly portrayed as a hero, information is told clearly and straight away where the males easily can identify the mission and, also emphasize statistics and status.

Full text
Abstract:
Many bilingual Spanish-English preschool aged children are impacted by speech sound disorders; and research has shown that bilingual speech sound systems develop differently than monolinguals'. Research has also shown that, for monolingual English and Spanish speakers, parent reports can be a valid tool for identification and single-word assessments can effectively diagnose speech disorder, yet little, if any, normative data or information about the validity of parent reports as an identification tool exists for bilingual Spanish-English speakers. The purpose of the present study was to create bilingual speech normative data for English single-word assessment scores for percent consonants correct (PCC), percent vowels correct (PVC), and the index of phonetic complexity (IPC). It also sought to determine correlations of speech scores and parent reports, which was done as an extension of Stertzbach's 2005 study with monolingual Spanish speakers. Fifty-six bilingual Spanish-English 4-year-olds were administered a single-word assessment in English and normative data was generated from the PCC, PVC, and IPC scores. That normative data was correlated with Likert values from the parent surveys to establish the validity of the report as an identification tool, and finally, the disordered scores (as determined by the normative data) were explored in relation to previous suspicion or diagnosis of disorder. The normative data showed 89% of speech scores falling within the typical range for both PCC and PVC and 93% for IPC. Pearson coefficients were computed by regression analysis and parent reports were deemed a valid tool for identification based on statistically significant correlations (at the .05 level) for 6 of 10 questions. Previous suspicions of disorder, based on parent report or examiner questionnaire, were 87.5% and 91% accurate, respectively, while current diagnosis, based on the presence of an existing Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP), was 93% accurate. The results were consistent with previous research showing the prevalence of speech disorder as well as the validity of the parent report.

Abstract:
The present situation of education in Slovakia is affected by various negative factors, like decrease of students for demographical reasons, discrepancy between kind and number of secondary schools and disregard to reactions of labor market. But, the main reason is an underfinancing across the education. Allocation of public finance by means of normative funding is inadequate. Normative funding forced secondary schools to accept students with low study score to gain more public finance. In the result it is wrong that school must find another foreign or external financial resource like grants and projects of the European Union. The aim of this paper is to assess the economy of selected secondary schools. Ten Business academies, with pupils aged 15-19 years old, established in Banská Bystrica and Žilina self-governing regions were examined. We used panel data gathered in school year 2013/2014 – 2017/2018 from valuable and verifiable sources like Annual reports of education and financial statements of schools. In paper we use qualitative method of semi-structured interviews with professionals in field to find out which indicators are suitable for economy measuring. Based on qualitative method we determined quantitative and financial indicators, like rate of public and external finance. We´re editing data by part of multi-criteria analyze, in the concrete standardized method. We get the economy result of selected secondary schools by integral indicator of applied mathematical method. In the conclusion of paper, we create economy ranking of schools and we suggest the economical solutions for schools with under average results. Our finding is designed by hands of Business academies for comparison with competition, founders of secondary school and resort of education.
