Full textThis dissertation analyzes the development of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), a Muslim-American religious association, from the Iranian Revolution to the inauguration of our nation's first African-American president. This case study of ISNA, the largest Muslim-American organization in North America, examines the organization's institution-building and governance as a way to illustrate Muslim-American civic and religious participation. Using nonprofit research and theory related to issues of diversity, legitimacy, power, and nonprofit governance and management, I challenge misconceptions about ISNA and dispel a number of myths about Muslim Americans and their institutions. In addition, I investigate the experiences of Muslim-Americans as they attempted to translate faith into practice within the framework of the American religious and civic experience. I arrive at three main conclusions. First, because of their incredible diversity, Muslim-Americans are largely cultural pluralists. They draw from each other and our national culture to develop their religious identity and values. Second, a nonprofit association that embraces the values of a liberal democracy by establishing itself as an open organization will include members that may damage the organization's reputation. I argue that ISNA's values should be assessed in light of its programs and actions rather than the views of a small portion of its membership. Reviewing the organization's actions and programs helps us discover a religious association that is centered on American civic and religious values. Third, ISNA's leaders were unable to balance their desire for an open, consensus-based organization with a strong nonprofit management power structure. Effective nonprofit associations need their boards, volunteers and staff to have well-defined roles and authority. ISNA's leaders failed to adopt such a management and governance structure because of their suspicion of an empowered chief executive officer.

Full textThe aim of this dissertation is to analyze the dynamics of financial integration between the Brazilian and the North American stock market. We will seek to identify the interdependence relationship between the two stock markets over time using rolling cointegration tests, rolling Granger causality tests, and estimating an error correction model using Kalman filter. Finally, we look if the time series obtained in the iterative procedures are related to volatility or quantity of trades from the contracts. We show in this dissertation that the financial integration relationship observed has a time varying character over time. This goes for both the cointegration relationship, and for the Granger causality relationship between the observed time series. We show also that the volatility of the time series has a positive and significant relationship with the cointegration relationship observed through the rolling cointegration tests.

Full textThis paper analyses the features that led the stock exchanges in Latin America to promote the integration initiatives that are currently in progress. The evaluation takes the experiences in integration and consolidation observed in Europe and the United States as main reference, as well as the opening of capital markets, introduction of electronic trading systems and demutualization processes, along with the increasing participation of institutional investors as main drivers of the transformation seen in the recent years. Since the late 1980 s, the capital markets worldwide have seen the modernization of the stock and derivatives exchanges. This movement has been occurring simultaneously to the opening of the capital markets and to the flows of capital led by institutional investors, which seem to have stimulated the adoption of more efficient electronic trading systems for the securities trading. In this sense, stock exchanges and market intermediaries started using technology to strengthen the efficiency of its intermediation models, as well as to broaden access with smaller trading costs to investors. In order to achieve more flexibility and raise financial resources to conduct these changes, the demutualization process has emerged allowing exchanges to become for-profit and market driven companies, which segregated the trading rights and the ownership rights of the intermediaries in the exchanges

Full textPrincipal components analyses of the 2001 Aboriginal Peoples Survey (APS) identified social support as a consistent dimension of Metis and Inuit health, and multivariable logistic regression modelling of the 2001 APS identified social support to be a significant determinant of thriving health among Indigenous men and women (e.g., those reporting their health as excellent/very good versus good/fair/poor). The results also indicate a distinct social gradient in thriving health status and social support among Aboriginal Canadians.
Narrative analyses of 26 interviews with Aboriginal Community Health Representatives point to two key explanations for the health-support paradox: (i) social support is not a widely accessible resource; and (ii) the negative health effects of social support can outweigh the positive ones. The formation of health behaviours and cultural norms - which underpin social supports - are inextricably tied to the poor material circumstances that characterize Canada's Aboriginal communities. The thesis concludes with a critical examination of the processes through which environmental dispossession has influenced the determinants of Aboriginal health, broadly speaking. Effects are most acute within the material and social environments of Aboriginal communities. More research attention should focus on identifying the pathways through which the physical, material and social environments interact to influence the health of Aboriginal Canadians.
