Abstract:
The circumpolar boreal zone is one of the world’s major biogeoclimatic zones, covering much of North America and Eurasia with forests, woodlands, wetlands, and lakes. It regulates climate, acts as a reservoir for biological and genetic diversity, plays a key role in biogeochemical cycles, and provides renewable resources, habitat, and recreational opportunities. Poor agreement exists amongst scientists regarding this zone’s delimitation and the areal extent of boreal forests, even though the zone has been well-studied. The tribe Astereae (Asteraceae) displays an American Amphitropical Disjunction. To understand the eco-evolutionary dynamics associated with a long-distance dispersal event and subsequent colonization of extratropical South America, we compared the climatic and geographic distributions of South American species with their closest North American relatives, focusing on the diverse South American Astereae genus, Haplopappus. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that two South American genera are closely related to seven North American genera. The climatic niche overlap (D = 0.5) between South and North

We tested for differences in cold tolerance associated with date, maternal DED tolerance sources, paternal sources from plant hardiness zones 5a, 6a, and 6b (determined using data from 1996 to 2005), and the interactions of these. Abstract:
The focus in this project was a workshop with the objective of promoting the standardization of fracture toughness testing procedures applicable to pipeline girths welds using SENT specimens. The participants included those currently active in the test procedures used in North America and Europe. The aim of this workshop was to develop guidelines for a round robin testing program with the focus on testing of SENT specimens with a surface notch in the girth weld zone

Abstract:
Many of the temperate zone major cities of the world, specifically those in Europe, Asia, and North America, are closely associated with large food-producing areas. This Elements of Change report looks into this relationship and the implications for the future organization of human populations and the quality of conditions necessary for productive agriculture and healthy urban environments. Particular attention is given to the case study of the metro-agro-plex in China. In addition, this report discusses issues associated with urban air and water pollution impacting agricultural productivity d

Full text
Abstract:
There have been a number of notable girth weld failures in newly constructed pipelines in North America, Asia, and South America. The primary contributors to the North America incidents have been identified as (1) weld strength undermatching, (2) heat-affected zone softening, and (3) elevated stress-strain in the affected girth welds. This project is a continuation of previous PRCI supported work and JIP with a particular focus on addressing the first two contributors through enhanced girth welding procedure qualification. Three test options for enhanced welding procedure qualification are pro

Abstract:
The black rail (Laterallus jamaicensis) is the most secretive of the secretive marsh birds and one of the least understood species in North America. On the east coast, eastern black rails historically bred in tidal and freshwater marshes along the Atlantic coast from Massachusetts, south to Florida. Within the mid-Atlantic region suitable black rail habitat is concentrated in the high marsh along the upper elevational zone of salt marshes. This zone is dominated by salt meadow hay (Spartina patens), saltgrass (Distichlis spicata), and is often interspersed with shrubs such as marsh elder (Iva
