Group 2 kimberlites from South Africa, and lamproites from Western Australia and North America are relatively unfractionated mantle-derived igneous rocks, situated on or close to ancient cratonic areas. They are characterised by high trace element contents, while the range in N d and Sr isotopes encompasses much of that reported for various upper and lower crustal rocks. This is a study of the pursuit of African American colonization as a state and latterly a federal policy during the period c. 1850-65. Historians generally come to the topic via an interest in the Civil War and especially in Lincoln, but in so doing, they saddle it with moral judgment and the burden of rather self-referential debates. This thesis explores what the role of the artist provides to the colonial novel. Using William Plomer's novel Turbott Wolfe, the role of the Western artist in colonial South Africa is examined and critiqued, putting it in conversation with the art theory of Roger Fry and the Primitivism movement. In doing so, it explores themes such as desire, miscegenation, complexity, and carnival, showing that while artists partake in society, they also remain critical of it, responding to it in their artwork.
