Abstract ∙ Several species of raptors that breed in North America migrate to the southern hemisphere during the non-breeding period. The Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus) is one of them, and its wintering distribution reaches the north and central part of South America, although there are published records for the species in Argentina and southern Brazil. We did an exhaustive search of records of the Broad-winged Hawk for South America, using bibliography, citizen-science initiatives, personal communications, and own records. We obtained 4025 georeferenced records for the 1879–2017 period.

The concentration of rain in short periods can trigger erosion processes and natural disasters such as floods and landslides. In order to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of daily precipitation throughout the Brazilian territory, the Concentration Index (CI) of daily precipitation was used. 1,402 daily rainfall series were used based on regular records from 1991 to 2020. The results of the annual CI allowed the identification of five climatic zones: 0.7% of the Brazilian territory with CI <0.54 located in the state of Mato Grasso do Sul; 29.4% with CI values between 0.54 an

In this dissertation we describe a newly discovered subsurface frontal meander of the North Brazil Undercurrent (NBUC), centered at about 4ºS, 36.5ºW, hereafter Potiguar Eddy (PE). The Potiguar Eddy is an elliptically-shaped eddy, with major and minor axes of approximately 330 and 130 km, with a subsurface signature. It extends vertically from 100 m to 400 m, with maximum velocities of 0.6 m.s-1 and recirculates about 2 Sv of waters from the NBUC. Despite the presence of the PE in subtermocline waters, the surface flow is northwestward throughout the year. The analysis of variability of moorin

The expansion of global fresh fruit markets has created opportunities for previously underdeveloped regions to integrate themselves into the world economy in new ways. One example is the recent formation and rapid growth of the grape branch of the fruiticulture sector in the sao Francisco valley, North East Brazil. This is based upon a very high level of federal state intervention in creating and managing irrigation districts. In addition, the activities of public and private actors in coordinating export production, and promoting cooperation amongst farms, has had, and continues to have, sign

In the western tropical Atlantic, the North Brazil Current retroflection periodically sheds large anticyclonic rings, which then propagate northwestward. Ten of the sampled rings are analyzed in this study, focusing on their sea surface dynamic properties.
