Abstract:

In this dissertation we describe a newly discovered subsurface frontal meander of the North Brazil Undercurrent (NBUC), centered at about 4ºS, 36.5ºW, hereafter Potiguar Eddy (PE). The Potiguar Eddy is an elliptically-shaped eddy, with major and minor axes of approximately 330 and 130 km, with a subsurface signature. It extends vertically from 100 m to 400 m, with maximum velocities of 0.6 m.s-1 and recirculates about 2 Sv of waters from the NBUC. In the western tropical Atlantic, the North Brazil Current retroflection periodically sheds large anticyclonic rings, which then propagate northwestward. Between 1998 and 2000, the North Brazil Current Rings Experiment sampled a large number of these rings by shipboard and moored acoustic Doppler current profiler. A Subcorrente Norte do Brasil (SNB) é a corrente de contorno oeste que fecha o Giro Equatorial do Oceano Atlantico em sua porc¸ ao austral.
