Abstract:
There can be no doubt that the Keswick Convention in Cumbria, England has had an enormous impact on the lives of many Christians and churches worldwide since its foundation in 1875. This thesis traces its history, albeit it briefly until 1914 and the evolution of its Teaching until 2012. The North of Ireland Keswick Convention, known locally from 1917 as ‘The Portstewart Convention’and from 2005 as ‘Keswick at Portstewart’, was carefully modelled on the Keswick Convention in Cumbria. Its original leaders invested heavily in property and have left a legacy without which the current Convention c

A computer database of detailed information on 23,753 emigrants who sailed from the port of Derry in the northwest of Ireland was constructed, using Customs and ship passenger records that together spanned the years 1803- 1867, though not continuously. This information was used to trace changes in the origins of the emigrants, their age and sex distribution, their occupational backgrounds, their destinations, and in how they paid for their fare. Analysis showed that that the profile of emigration changed from emigration of mainly young, unattached males in the early part of the century to fami

During the eighteenth and nineteenth century Ireland was dominated economically and politically by a powerful elite whose ownership of land not only provided them with wealth but also gave them access to positions ofpolitical influence on a local, national and even international level. The closing years ofthe nineteenth century witnessed a powerful. challenge to this elite on both an economic and a political front. The aim of this study is to produce high-resolution multi-proxy records of hydrological change, spanning the last c. 250 years, from nine ombrotrophic peatlands across the north of Ireland. The results provide important insights into the nature of recent climate change in the region. To quantify hydrological change, a combination of established proxy indicators are utilised, including testate amoebae, plant macrofossils and humification analysis. Reconstructions of water table change from testate-amoebae assemblages are undertaken using a transfer function previously developed for the north of

Abstract:
This thesis researches the snare drum in the North of Ireland. The primary question in this thesis focuses on the diversity of technique and snare drumming style found in Northern Ireland. In examining the issues surrounding a musical instrument and performance style in the post-conflict era of Northern Ireland, the study aims to shed light on the different factors that affect styles of music, particularly parade band music, during times of significant change. The research aims to address the question; how, and in what ways is the concept of identity expressed by the community through music, p

The purpose of this dissertation was to compare British policy towards Ireland/Northern Ireland and United States and Canadian Indian policies. Despite apparent differences, it was hypothesized that closer examination would reveal significant similarities. A conceptual framework was provided by the utilization of Hartzian fragment theory and the theory of internal colonialism. Eighteen research questions and a series of questions concerned with the applicability of the theoretical constructs were tested using largely historical data and statistical indices of social and economic development. It questions why the Chester and Holyhead Railway was chosen over its rivals in 1844, and what political influence government applied to ensure its success against a technically superior alternative. The vulnerability of north Ireland’s Atlantic coastline is assessed for the first time based on Irish tide-gauge records. Decadal-scale change in foredune presence and loss has been observed at Five Fingers Strand, north Ireland.
