Abstract:
Crab fishermen in Northern Catanduanes primarily rely on crab fishing for income. This study focused on the perspectives of crab fishermen in Northern Catanduanes regarding the catch and effort of blue swimming crab from February to May 2023. Results showed that crab fishers with an age range of 19–75 years old and an average of 12.5 years of crabbing used three fishing gears: a bottom-set gill net (BSGN), a crab pot (CP), and a crab lift net (CLN). The catch composition of BSGN in Northern Catanduanes showed that 56.89% were blue swimming crabs, with 43.11% being by-catch species includ

Fishermen in Northern Catanduanes rely heavily on Blue Swimming Crab (BSC) as a source of income. The goal of this study was to characterize the BSC fishery in the maritime environments of Viga, Panganiban, Pandan, and Bagamanoc. A survey was conducted to gather data on the BSC fishery in Northern Catanduanes from February to May 2023. The results revealed that the income of crabbers and their families was well below the poverty threshold. This was worsened by the lack of formal education among crabbers, which restricted their options for finding alternative sources of income. The primary fish

Macrofungi are known to be heterotrophic eukaryotes that dwell in rotten wood, decaying matter, grassy ground, and other substrates. Most of them are saprotrophs or decomposers. They provide a big contribution to nutrient cycling as primary producers. The diversity of macrofungi are studied across the globe yet 10% of the species are only identified. This review aimed to provide a systematic information of the diverse species of macrofungi that were collected in the selected sample sites of the Philippines specifically in Catanduanes, Laguna, Nueva Vizcaya, Northen Samar, and Camarines Sur. Angry Registers (ARs) are evident in situations where they are used, such as when someone is angry. This study endeavored to examine the characteristics and functions of angry registers in the discourse of 90 participants (45 men and 45 women) from four municipalities of Northern Catanduanes region in Bicol, Philippines. The data collection was ensured through the use of observation sheets and follow-up interviews. The investigation is grounded on the perspectives of Speech Register Theory, and is quantitative-qualitative in nature. Findings revealed that there are 26 angry registers used; 14

Marine resources in the Philippines are rapidly declining due to overfishing and habitat degradation, threatening biodiversity and the livelihoods of coastal communities and small-scale fishers. Crustaceans, like the blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus), which serve as a vital source of income for small-scale fishers, are among the most affected. To combat the depletion of fishery resources, the Philippine government implemented the National Blue Swimming Crab Policies and Plans (NBSCPP). The monotypic Scale-feathered Malkoha Lepidogrammus cumingi (Fraser 1839) and polytypic Red-crested Malkoha Dasylophus superciliosus (Dumont 1823) are two of the endemic cuckoos in the Philippines. The taxonomy and distribution of these endemic cuckoos are poorly known. Recent distribution data of these cuckoos showed broader distribution patterns in the islands of Luzon, Catanduanes, and Marinduque; however, morphometric variations among these island populations are still unknown. While both species are sexually monomorphic, the differences between sexes were mainly based on plumage coloratio

Anguillids are а valuable fish commodity worldwide. Although Anguilla luzonensis have been abundantly found in the northern Philippines and collected for trade, no available records show that it recruited in the mid-part where Lagonoy Gulf, Bicol is situated. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of A. luzonensis in the tributaries along the Lagonoy Gulf, Philippines using molecular tools. Glass eel specimens were collected in 2018–2019 from the Comun river, Albay; the Lagonoy river, Camarines Sur; and the Bato river, Catanduanes. For the first time, A. luzonensis was identified by mol
