Along with a fairly large number of works devoted to the components of the radiation balance, research is mainly conducted to study their spatio-temporal distribution ov

Abstract:
This publication is the first to provide a comprehensive, systematic and rigorous analysis of the costs of crime in Latin America and the Caribbean. The main challenges in the region are addressed: the social cost of homicides, private and public spending on security, the penitentiary crisis, violence against women, organized crime and cybercrime. The volume estimates that the direct cost of crime for 17 LAC countries in 2010-2014 is, on average, 3.5 percent of the region's GDP--twice as much as in the developed world. This volume also provides a detailed analysis of the costs of crime in Braz

Abstract:
Ethiopia is currently experiencing several intersecting humanitarian crises including conflict, climatic shocks, COVID-19, desert locust infestation and more. These intersecting crises are affecting nearly 30 million people and resulting in food insecurity, displacement and protection risks. As of February 2022, over 2.5 million people were estimated to have been displaced as a result of the ongoing conflict-driven humanitarian crisis in the Northern Ethiopian regions of Tigray, Amhara and Afar that began in November 2020. As of May 2022, 9.4 million were in need of humanitarian aid in the reg

Abstract:
The blockade that Israel imposed on the Gaza Strip, after the attack by Hamas on 7 October 2023, drastically reduced commercial and humanitarian deliveries of food. Together with heavy bombing that damaged more than half the farmland in Gaza, all sources of access to food were systematically undermined, and the population was exposed to several months of catastrophic food insecurity. Three assessments by the international community concluded that there was ‘a risk of famine’ in December 2023, that a famine was ‘imminent’ in March 2024, but that this threat had receded by June 2024 as restricti

Abstract:
Violent conflicts and crime have reached new heights in Nigeria, as cases of kidnapping, armed banditry, and communal unrests continue to tear at the core of the ethnoreligious divides in the country. Southern Kaduna has witnessed a virulent spree of communal unrest in northern Nigeria over the last decade due to its polarized politics and power differentials between the various groups in the area, particularly the Christians and Muslims, who are almost evenly split. In response to their experiences of violence, the people of that region have also shown incredible resilience and grit in transf

Abstract:
Sri Lanka has experienced a 26-year-long civil war between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which ended in 2009 with the defeat of the latter. Since the end of the conflict, Sri Lanka has engaged in a transitional justice process, which has been characterised by a multiplication of truth-seeking mechanisms and a disregard for victims’ needs. Currently, the government is establishing a new truth commission despite the disaccord of several civil society organisations and victims. Additionally, the proposed new Counter Terrorism Bill intended to replace the Preventi

Abstract:
Climate change plays an important role in the future of the Sahel. Temperatures, particularly in the northern-central Sahel, could rise 1.5 times faster than the global average. Climate shocks and extreme events such as droughts and heavy rains are projected to become more frequent and severe. These changes are accompanied by other challenges: accelerated population growth, low economic productivity and production diversity, political conflicts and crises, inter-communal violence and violent extremism. However, the severity of climate impacts on livelihoods, food security, mobility and conflic
