Abstract Habitat edges are well-studied components of fragmented landscapes, yet factors mediating edge effects remain unclear. We report how different types of edges surrounding patches may affect spatial distributions of Bobolink (Dolichonyx oryzivorus), a declining, area-sensitive songbird that breeds in grasslands. We expected Bobolinks to be less abundant near edges, and we investigated a set of alternative hypotheses for explaining that spatial pattern: (1) passive displacement, in which individuals do not avoid edges but use edges as boundaries for territories; (2) habitat gradients, in

Abstract Terrestrial salamanders are sensitive to forest disturbance associated with even-aged management. We studied the distribution of redback salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) for 4 yr at edges between even-aged northern hardwood stands along three replicate transects in each of three edge contrast types: regeneration/mature, sapling/mature, and poletimber/mature in northern New Hampshire. We used 2 m2 coverboard clusters at the edge, and at 5, 10, 20, and 40 m into the younger and mature stands. Determining how ant communities are impacted by challenges from habitat fragmentation, such as edge effects, will help us understand how ants may be used as a bioindicator taxon. To assess the impacts of edge effects upon the ant community in a northern temperate deciduous forest, we studied edge and interior sites in Jericho, VT, USA. The edges we focused upon were created by recreational trails. We censused the ants at these sites for two consecutive growing seasons using pitfall traps and litter plot excavations. Within the mineral soil, ring edges are characterized by strong negative anomalies in pH, ORP and carbonate, as well as positive anomalies of Al, Fe and Mn in the results of aqua regia and hydroxylamine-hydrochloride digestions. The Vernal NE 7.5' quadrangle is located at the northern boundary of the Colorado Plateau physiographic province, within the Uinta Basin sub-province (Fenneman and Johnson, 1946). The Middle Rocky Mountains, in Fenneman and Johnson’s (1946) classification, is located east and north of the quadrangle. The quadrangle includes Ashley Valley, centered on Ashley Creek, which drains the southern flank of the Uinta Mountains. The western part of the quadrangle is defined by the northwest-southeast-trending Asphalt Ridge and the west-dipping slope along the flank of the ridge. The northeastern part of

Abstract:
A revised qualitative assessment of the hydrocarbon resource potential is presented for the Hudson Bay sedimentary basin that underlies Hudson Bay and adjacent onshore areas of Ontario, Manitoba, and Nunavut. The Hudson Basin is a large intracratonic sedimentary basin that preserves dominantly Ordovician to Devonian aged limestone and evaporite strata. Maximum preserved sediment thickness is about 2.5 km. Source rock is the petroleum system element that has the lowest chance of success; the potential source rock is thin, may be discontinuous, and the thin sedimentary cover may not have been su
