Abstract:
AbstractThe formation of common law marriages and consensual unions has long been part of the marital structure of Mexico. This type of unions increased markedly during the last decade in Mexico including its northern border region. This region is intriguing-ly heterogeneous because in some states the proportion of cohabitation is as high as or even higher than that of marriages, whereas in others this proportion is still much lower than that of marriages. It is interesting to note that the levels of lower to higher proportions of consensual unions in the region run from east to west and from south to north.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines how globalization and violence have shaped workers' organizations in the Urabá banana zone in northern Colombia from the 1960s to the present. Early unions found allies in leftist political and guerilla organizations. The banana growers relied on the neoliberal state and rightist paramilitaries to unleash an extraordinary wave of violence to crush the leftist unions. They also wooed the right within the unions by pleading a set of common interests in reforming the global banana trade to the benefit of Colombian producers. By the 1990s, a newly right-dominated union in Urabá proved adept at labor-management collaboration in the interest of their joint regional stake in the industry, but it also promoted international labor unity aimed at pressuring banana transnationals to accept minimum labor standards.

Abstract:
AbstractIn 2006, the European Union launched its new free trade strategy Global Europe with the explicit goal of increasing European competitiveness. This article explores the positions of trade unions and other social movements on Global Europe. Importantly, while Northern social movements and trade unions from the Global South reject Global Europe due to its impact of deindustrialisation on developing countries, European trade unions support it in so far as it opens up new markets for the export of European manufactured goods. It will be argued that this has to be understood against the background of the dynamics underlying the global economy and here in particular uneven and combined development. Due to the uneven integration of different parts of the world into the global economy, workers in developed countries may actually benefit from free trade, while workers in the Global South are more likely to lose out. It will, however, also be argued that while these different positions within the social relations of production are shaping the position of trade unions, they do not determine them. Over time, through direct engagement, trade unions in the North and South may be able to establish relations of transnational solidarity.

Abstract:
The eight countries examined in this study—Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden—have long been viewed as exemplifying “corporatist” industrial relations systems, in which union coverage is high, unions are influential and commonly have strong ties to political parties, and collective bargaining is institutionalized and relatively centralized. Many observers have recently argued that such corporatist bargaining institutions are everywhere being undermined by changes in the global economy. The authors, using data from a wide variety of primary and secondary sources, test whether changes in patterns of wage-setting in the private sector are consistent with that claim. Although they find some signs that corporatist wage-setting institutions are in decline, they also find offsetting signs of the resiliency of such institutions. Overall, the evidence does not indicate that wage-setting in the private sector is undergoing a general process of decentralization in these eight countries.

Abstract:
Southern unions were the weak link in the American labor movement, organizing a smaller share of the labor force than did unions in the northern states or in Europe. Structural conditions, including a racially divided rural population, obstructed southern unionization. The South's distinctive political system also blocked unionization. A strict racial code compelling whites to support the Democratic Party and the disfranchisement of southern blacks and many working-class whites combined to create a one-party political system that allowed southern politicians to ignore labor's demands. Unconstrained by working-class voters, southern politicians facilitated strikebreaking and favored employers against unions.

Abstract:
Internationalization, trade union decline, enforcement problems and rising self-employment all strain the effectiveness of collective wage bargaining arrangements in northern European construction. We examine Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK, and show that these strains have pushed trade unions to seek assistance from the state to stabilize wage regulation, but with results that vary according to employer strategies and the power balances between the actors. While Denmark and the UK have barely introduced any state support, Norway has followed the Netherlands and Germany in introducing legal mechanisms for extension of collectively agreed minimum wage terms. The country studies suggest that state assistance alleviates some of the strain, but does not reverse the trends, and the comparison indicates that both institutional innovation and reorganization may be required if wage bargaining is not to drift into different functions.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the European Union (EU) effect on the economic activity across the Green Line in the divided Cyprus between 2004 and 2016. The primary focus is on the development and implementation of the EU's Green Line Regulation (GLR), which regulates and enables such activity from three aspects: movement of goods, services, and persons. In tracing the EU effect, this thesis provides a critical appraisal of the GLR on whether it provides an adequate legal framework for the economic activity in those three aspects and the extent to which it has contributed to the development of economic cooperation between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities across the divide. The analysis also pays an equal level of attention to the extent to which the EU effect has been mediated by the factors at the domestic level: the roles of legal framework, ethno-politics in political elites, ethno-politics in civil society, and governance. The investigation of this study is pegged in two academic literatures. The first one is the Europeanisation debate, which concerns with the EU effect in the domestic affairs of countries associated with the EU. This thesis borrows three mechanisms of Europeanisation from this debate in order to test the EU effect on the three aspects of economic activity across the divide in Cyprus: i) institutional compliance, ii) change of domestic opportunity structures, iii) cognitive change. The second academic literature is the liberal peace, which it proposes that greater economic interactions and development of economic interdependence between countries facilitate resolution of their conflicts. The insights from this debate is utilised for conceptualising the EU's GLR as a liberal peace project. While Europeanisation is portrayed as a 'process', liberal peace objectives are seen as the 'ultimate destination', which the 'vehicle' of the EU's GLR will drive the island towards it. This thesis argues that the GLR has only achieved a limited success and largely failed to contribute to the development of economic cooperation across the divide in Cyprus. This is mainly because the Europeanisation process have been heavily mediated and negated by the design shortcomings of the GLR as well as the factors at the domestic level, which are inherently linked to the politics of division. In this context, this thesis aspires to make contribution in both empirical and conceptual terms. The in-depth and critical investigation of the GLR as well as of the economic activity across the divide in Cyprus provides a much-needed contribution to the contemporary politics of Cyprus, which has been largely ignored by the existing academic literature. Additionally, the conceptual framework developed in this thesis allows exploring synergies between the theoretical literatures of Europeanisation and liberal peace and combines them with examination of new empirical evidence. This focus captures insights on how Europeanisation can be used as a 'tool' for pursuing liberal peace objectives in contested statehood, beyond what has been researched so far and also provides a blueprint for other similar cases of conflict.

Finlay, Andrew Robert. "Trade unionism and sectarianism among Derry shirt workers 1920-1968 : with special reference to the National Union of Tailors and Garment Workers." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1989. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317879/.

Abstract:
The problem at the heart of this study is: to what extent and in what ways was the development of trade unionism in the Derry shirt industry influenced by sectarianism? This problem and my approach to it were elaborated in contradistinction to existing theories of trade unionism in Northern Ireland. According to the main theory, developed most cogently within traditional Irish Marxism, trade unionism was thwarted by sectarianism. I suggest that this theory has more to do with the reductionist and evolutionist assumptions of its authors than with social reality and argue that the relationship between trade unionism and sectarianism is better understood with an approach in which it is recognised that both of these institutions are constituted through the actions of concrete individuals who are themselves constituted by society, and in which priority is given to the meanings which individuals ascribe to their actions and predicaments. My study is based on interviews with a sample of retired union officials and activists. My respondents were keenly aware of the Catholic-Protestant dichotomy, but, contrary to what traditional Irish Marxists would lead one to expect, they did not regard sectarianism as a significant problem until the 1950s. My analysis of union growth and structure 1920-1952 largely confirmed this view: union densities compared favourably with clothing workers in Britain, and the main factors underlying fluctuations in membership were more or less the same as elsewhere in Britain. Conflict between Protestant and Catholic shirtmakers only became a problem as a result of inter-union rivalry which followed the formation of a breakaway union in 1952. Sectarian conflict was activated by a specifically trade union power struggle, not vice versa, Thus, this study does not merely contradict the prevailing view of the relationship between trade unionism and sectarianism - it inverts it.

Abstract:
According to Richard English, “one of the most conspicuous features of the scholarly literature in recent years has been the lack of scrutiny which certain subjects have received – subject(s) which the explosion of the Northern Irish conflict might have been expected to stimulate” (English, 1996, p.221). One subject, which has received little academic consideration, despite recent developments, has been the area of unionism and human rights in Northern Ireland. The overall aim of this thesis is to investigate and consider the attitudes of influential strands of unionist opinion towards the concept of human rights as that narrative as been applied and interpreted in Northern Ireland. In order to consider fully the position of influential strands of unionist opinion on human rights, the thesis does this firstly, through theoretical engagement with what is meant by the concept of human rights and an examination of unionist political thought. Secondly, through examining the practical application of human rights in Northern Ireland, which means investigating the position of influential strands of unionist opinion on a Northern Ireland Bill of Rights (pre and post Belfast Agreement) and the relationship of key unionist elites with the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC). The thesis poses four interconnected and overlapping questions. Firstly, are influential strands of unionist opinion sceptical and suspicious of human rights as that concept as been interpreted and applied in Northern Ireland? Secondly, if unionists have expressed anxiety, what aspects of human rights discourse in Northern Ireland are key unionist elites sceptical of? Thirdly, is this anxiety universal or do significant cleavages within unionism exist? Fourthly, why are unionists anxious about human rights discourse in Northern Ireland? This thesis aims to address the absence of any research or academic study of this area of Northern Ireland politics and in doing so increase our knowledge and understanding of unionism’s relationship with this particular aspect of the peace process in Northern Ireland and of recent debates about the protection of human rights in Northern Ireland. It also aims to move beyond the anecdotal and rhetorical manner in which this area has been presented in the academic literature and in popular political discourse and develop a deeper understanding than currently exists about the nature of the relationship between key unionist elites and human rights in Northern Ireland.

Abstract:
The utilization of the European Union financial resources by territorial self-govenment units in Northern Poland fosters the process of reconstruction and management of cultural heritage assets and their adaptation to the realization of social and economic tasks and functions. The aim of the paper is to present the ways of spending EU financial resources earmarked for the purposes related to cultural assets in rural areas of Northern Poland against a background of the remaining spatial categories (the voivodship in its entirety, the metropolitan area of the voivodship, towns with district rights, counties) encompassing three voivodships: Zachodniopomorskie, Pomorskie and Kujawsko-Pomorskie. The survey was conducted over the period 2007-2015 using the SIMIK Database of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development of the Republic of Poland. The analysis conducted in the paper allowed us to conclude that projects which were carried out in rural areas constituted approximately 20 % of the overall expenditure on ”cultural” projects in the region. Both in the voivodship as a whole as well as in rural areas, in all voivodships the chief purposes encompassed cultural objects and assets as well as sport and tourism infrastructure. On the other hand, tourism product, promotion and information were much less frequently co-financed from EU Fund in Northern Poland in the years 2007-2015.

Abstract:
In the article populations dynamics in the geopolitically and economically important territory the Pacific coast of the Far East, both in the Soviet and PostSoviet years is considered. The processes of populations change occurring there for a long period of time (19592015) have been analyzed. The coastal territories are differed by demographic development conditioned by the features of development, by an economicgeographical position and by the level of socialeconomic development. The distinctions in the sizes of the territory and the number of resident population are reflected in the indicator of populations density, which also influences the distinctions in the demographic potential. The demographic processes occur in different ways in the northern and southern municipal unions. Besides the factor of population size in the settlements, the coastal position has its impact on them. For example, depopulation remains the basic problem of demographic development of the continental coast of the Sea of Japan. Only in five city districts positive dynamics of populations growth has been marked. These are Vladivostok, Artem, YuzhnoSakhalinsk, PetropavlovskKamchatky, and Magadan. As a result of amplifying concentration of the population around the regional centers, the demographic processes considerably differ from the peripheral coastal territories losing their population. In the northern subjects considerable dependence of migratory gain with creation of the large extracting industries, which have defined the level of economic wellbeing of the population living there, is marked. Population outflow is resulted from cutting down of the extracting industries in connection with the reorganization reforms. Such features of formation of the demographic potential should be considered in developing the programs of socialeconomic development of these territories. It is noticed, that there the demographic processes occurred with various intensity during the various periods. Two criteria of the different direction are allocated by these criteria, i.e. the period of active increase in the population and that of the decrease in the population. In a number of cases, positive or negative dynamics of population is caused by the influence of the migratory and natural movements towards growth or reduction respectively. Preservation and an increase in human resources in the region are possible only under the conditions of the effective migratory policy directed to preservation of its own demographic potential and attraction of migrants.

Abstract:
Union Gas, like many of the natural gas companies across Canada, has seen significant expansion of it’s compression and pipeline facilities in the past few years. Much of this expansion has been dedicated to the gas storage and transmission needs of the Eastern Canadian and American markets. With the capital costs of these facilities continually on the rise it is critical to ensure that each facility will yield maximum utility to the system for the proposed investment. Union Gas has a unique position within the Canadian gas industry as not only a major distribution company but also an operator of over 120 BCF of underground gas storage and a transmission pipeline system which is an integral part of the transCanadian gas supply infrastructure. Union’s transmission and storage system provides a vital link between the TransCanada PipeLines transmission system running through Northern Ontario and Central Michigan and several delivery points into the Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada. The diverse nature of Union’s operating facilities dictate a system with two distinctively different modes of compression during the winter operating season. These modes being storage withdrawal, which is typically a high head low flow operation and pipeline transmission which is a low head high flow operation. Each of these modes require specific compressor performance designs which do not typically display the flexibility to be utilized in either mode. With system demands consistently on the increase it can be very difficult to maintain adequate backup in the event of a compressor plant outage; this is particularly evident’ when considering the different operating requirements at various locations in the system. In an effort to maximize the operational flexibility of a new facility, Union Gas has implemented a new design consisting of a triple case compressor train driven off a single engine gas turbine package. With the external unit piping configured for both series and parallel operation this new design can effectively duplicate all possible modes of operation in Union’s present operating system, for both storage withdrawal and pipeline transmission. This paper will discuss the extent of operational flexibility this system can offer and the various design concerns associated with this type of compression plant facility.

My contribution deals with the issue concerning the question arising on the applicable law in and after the transition period set in the Agreement on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community. The aim of this contribution is to analyze how the English and European laws simultaneously influence one another. This analyzation will lead to the prognosis of the impact Brexit will have on the applicable English law before English courts and the courts of the states of the European Union. The main key question is the role of lex fori in English law. Will English law tend to return to common law rules post-Brexit, and prefer the lex fori?

Abstract:
The Altamont Rail Corridor Project will develop a new dedicated regional passenger rail link within Northern California for joint use by regional intercity and commuter trains connecting between the northern San Joaquin Valley and the Bay Area as well as statewide intercity trains fully compatible with the 200+ mph system being developed by the California High-Speed Rail Authority (the Authority). The corridor, which follows portions of the transcontinental railway, is presently served by the Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) operated by the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission (the Commission) and is eligible to receive California High-Speed Rail bond funds. The Authority and Commission have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop the project which will greatly improve the existing service by providing a new dedicated passenger line separate from the Union Pacific Railroad over which the current ACE service operates. The strategic geographic location of the corridor within the Northern California network allows operation of a wide variety of services through Altamont Pass including commuter trains to the Bay Area, intercity corridor trains and regional intercity trains between Sacramento and San Jose` with the possibility that high-speed “bullet” trains from the statewide network could ultimately operate along the route. Although the shared-use potential broadens interest in the project, concomitant planning challenges include identifying workable, cost-effective solutions to incrementally develop the 80+ mile corridor over time while migrating the service presently provided by standard heavyweight diesel locomotive-drawn consists to a fully electrified, grade separated operation capable of supporting operation of 220+ mph lightweight trainsets.

Based on the fact that the mineral deposits are grouped into eight main resource groups, zoning of the Russian part of the coast of the Sea of Japan by a combination of the main types of mineral resources is performed. The types of municipalities are allocated by a combination of mineral resources and their features are shown. Six areas are singled out by a combination of mineral resources. Henderson, Tim, Vincent Santucci, Tim Connors, and Justin Tweet. National Park Service geologic type section inventory: Northern Colorado Plateau Inventory & Monitoring Network. National Park Service, April 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2285337.

Full text
Abstract:
A fundamental responsibility of the National Park Service (NPS) is to ensure that park resources are preserved, protected, and managed in consideration of the resources themselves and for the benefit and enjoyment by the public. Through the inventory, monitoring, and study of park resources, we gain a greater understanding of the scope, significance, distribution, and management issues associated with these resources and their use. This baseline of natural resource information is available to inform park managers, scientists, stakeholders, and the public about the conditions of these resources and the factors or activities which may threaten or influence their stability. There are several different categories of geologic or stratigraphic units (supergroup, group, formation, member, bed) which represent a hierarchical system of classification. The mapping of stratigraphic units involves the evaluation of lithologies, bedding properties, thickness, geographic distribution, and other factors. If a new mappable geologic unit is identified, it may be described and named through a rigorously defined process that is standardized and codified by the professional geologic community (North American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature 2005). In most instances when a new geologic unit such as a formation is described and named in the scientific literature, a specific and well-exposed section of the unit is designated as the type section or type locality (see Definitions). The type section is an important reference section for a named geologic unit which presents a relatively complete and representative profile. The type or reference section is important both historically and scientifically, and should be available for other researchers to evaluate in the future. Therefore, this inventory of geologic type sections in NPS areas is an important effort in documenting these locations in order that NPS staff recognize and protect these areas for future studies. The documentation of all geologic type sections throughout the 423 units of the NPS is an ambitious undertaking. The strategy for this project is to select a subset of parks to begin research for the occurrence of geologic type sections within particular parks. The focus adopted for completing the baseline inventories throughout the NPS was centered on the 32 inventory and monitoring networks (I&M) established during the late 1990s. The I&M networks are clusters of parks within a defined geographic area based on the ecoregions of North America (Fenneman 1946; Bailey 1976; Omernik 1987). These networks share similar physical resources (geology, hydrology, climate), biological resources (flora, fauna), and ecological characteristics. Specialists familiar with the resources and ecological parameters of the network, and associated parks, work with park staff to support network level activities (inventory, monitoring, research, data management). Adopting a network-based approach to inventories worked well when the NPS undertook paleontological resource inventories for the 32 I&M networks. The network approach is also being applied to the inventory for the geologic type sections in the NPS. The planning team from the NPS Geologic Resources Division who proposed and designed this inventory selected the Greater Yellowstone Inventory and Monitoring Network (GRYN) as the pilot network for initiating this project. Through the research undertaken to identify the geologic type sections within the parks of the GRYN methodologies for data mining and reporting on these resources was established. Methodologies and reporting adopted for the GRYN have been used in the development of this type section inventory for the Northern Colorado Plateau Inventory & Monitoring Network. The goal of this project is to consolidate information pertaining to geologic type sections which occur within NPS-administered areas, in order that this information is available throughout the NPS...
