Abstract:
This article considers the proliferation of nostalgic aesthetics in Instagram poetry (‘instapoetry’). Though often overlooked, the relationship between the platform and the poetry itself is a vibrant entry point into debates about the handwritten, analogue and vintage styles of instapoetry. Connecting modernist and postmodernist arguments about nostalgia, this article provides a critical and conceptual lens with which to analyse the visual aspects of nostalgic aesthetics – referred to as ‘nosthetics’ – characteristic of instapoetry, investigating how and why the genre impersonates the pre-digital, analogue past. Combining scholarship on platforms, nostalgia and instapoetry shows how the concept of nosthetics can be used as a framework for literary and visual analysis of instapoetry. The theoretical framework proposed recommends three developments for those researching nostalgic aesthetics in instapoetry. First, greater attention should be paid to the platform. Second, engagement with scholarship on popular culture and nostalgia is needed. Finally, it is insightful to return to the notion of space at the heart of Johannes Hofer's original definition of nostalgia.

Abstract:
This essay argues that the complexities of the nostalgic impulse in Hollywood cinema are inadequately described by Svetlana Boym’s particular description of Hollywood as “both induc[ing] nostalgia and offer[ing] a tranquilizer” and her highly influential general distinction between restorative and reflective nostalgia. Instead, it contends that Hollywood departs in important ways from the models of both the restorative nostalgia established by the heritage cinema and Great Britain and the reflective nostalgia commonly found in American literature. Using a wide range of examples from American cinema, American literature, and American culture, it considers the reasons why nostalgia occupies a different place and seeks different kinds of expressions in American culture than it does in other national cultures, examines the leading Hollywood genres in which restorative nostalgia appears and the distinctive ways those genres inflect it, and concludes by urging a closer analysis of the more complex, multi-laminated nostalgia Hollywood films offer as an alternative to Boym’s highly influential categorical dichotomy.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine the links between consumer age identity, nostalgia and preferences for nostalgic products. Design/methodology/approach A theoretical framework is proposed based on integrating nostalgia and age identity as parts of an individual’s self-concept. Research results are obtained from the empirical study of a sample of 313 consumers in Lithuania and five interviews with experts in marketing industry. Findings Employing structural equation modeling analysis, the current study provides initial evidence that the bigger the discrepancy between one’s chronological and cognitive age, the more nostalgic products one buys. Furthermore, age identity acts as a better predictor for purchasing nostalgic products than nostalgia. Originality/value The current paper explores the impact of nostalgia and age identity on consumer purchasing behavior which is not addressed in literature before. By evaluating the role of nostalgia and age identity, the study offers a deeper understanding of consumer behavior in nostalgia contexts. Moreover, unlike in most previous studies on nostalgia and age identity, it is focused on actual rather than intended behavior. The present study is also relevant for current marketers as the findings provide additional information and recommendations for choosing appropriate marketing and communication strategies.

Abstract:
The article seeks to develop a theoretical analysis and interpretation of the role of nostalgia in German Holocaust memoirs. The intervention of advertising by appropriating nostalgia into marketing has led to an effacement of ‘algia’ or the pain that nostalgia implicates. The modern perception of nostalgia as a positive emotion has affected the idea of yoking nostalgia to traumatic experiences. The current paper analyses whether nostalgia plays a conspicuous role in the trauma narratives of Holocaust survivors. The paper is divided into three sections: first, an overview of the term ‘nostalgia’ through the ages is attempted to comprehend the problem of attaching nostalgia to trauma narratives. Second, textual analysis of The Boy on the Wooden Box (2013) by Leon Leyson and I will Plant you a Lilac Tree (2005) by Laura Hillman is undertaken to establish the presence of nostalgia in the narratives. Third, the major uses of nostalgia in the select texts are condensed into five categories: nostalgia functions as a tool of Ideological State Apparatus (ISA), relieves survival anxiety, improves resolute decisions, aids in preserving nostalgic objects and operates as an intermediary between individual and collective memories in the primary texts. Svetlana Boym’s binary classification of nostalgia is applied to the texts to provide an insight into the nature of nostalgia invoked. The study concludes that restorative nostalgia disrupts progress but augments the nostalgic individual’s determination to survive and recreate the perfect past. Reflective nostalgia provides the awareness that the past is irrevocable, and that change is inevitable.

Abstract:
Nostalgia is actually a concept with great interest for researchers in different domains such as marketing. Several studies underlined the potential that nostalgia has for persuasive advertising. Despite theoretical relevance, little is known about the real impact of nostalgic advertising style on brand attachment. This research investigates the impact of the ad capacity to evoke nostalgia on persuasion process and brand attachment in the food industry. To test the relationship between variables, an experiment including two different advertisement style was conducted on 360 individuals in Tunisia. We used structural equation modelling to test the conceptual model. The results indicated that nostalgic ad has some more favorable responses of consumers than the informative ad. Also, it appears that past orientation has a positive impact on nostalgia proneness that can explain the positive reaction of the individuals to the nostalgic ad and brand attachment. This research provides empirical insight into the brand attachment literature and can be considered as a source of information for managers who wish to target consumers through nostalgic persuasive communication. Limitations and future research directions are stipulated.

Abstract:
This article conceptually integrates research on the experience of nostalgia—defined as a predominantly positive, social, and past-oriented emotion—into the fold of video game research. We emphasize the role of nostalgia as an explanation for contemporary retro gaming trends, and suggest that nostalgia towards gaming events is a necessary area of research. To those ends, we broadly review existing literature on nostalgia before specifically focusing on media-induced nostalgia, and demonstrate how theoretical and empirical observations from this work can be applied to understand video game nostalgia. In particular, we argue that engaging in older gaming experiences indirectly (via memories) and even directly (via replaying or recreating experiences) elicits nostalgia, which in turn contributes to players' self-optimization and enhanced well-being. Moreover, as gamers and the medium mature together, nostalgic experiences with the medium are likely to become increasingly prevalent. The broad aim of this article is to offer future directions for research on video game nostalgia and provide a research agenda for research in this area.

Abstract:
In the literature, there are discrepancies about how nostalgia affects green consumption. Both positive and negative relationships between nostalgia and green consumption are found, and most research treats all types of green consumption the same, neglecting the differences. This study tried to put the contradictory findings together by classifying green consumption into future vs. non-future green consumption and taking collective vs. personal nostalgia into account. As far as we know, this study is the first to propose this classification of green consumption, and different patterns are found, which might drive new research. This research tested our hypotheses across four randomized controlled trials with 921 valid respondents in total. Study 1 found a negative effect of personal nostalgia on future-oriented green consumption and revealed a positive relationship between collective nostalgia and non-future green consumption. The results confirmed both positive and negative effects of nostalgia on green consumption found in previous research. Study 2 revealed that the past orientation mediated personal nostalgia’s negative effect on future-oriented green consumption and collective efficacy mediated collective nostalgia’s positive effect on non-future-oriented green consumption. Study 3 tested the moderating effect of product newness on personal nostalgia and future green consumption, and a negative moderating effect was uncovered. Study 4 found a positive moderating effect of product identity on collective nostalgia and non-future-oriented green consumption.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to make up the deficiency of theoretical research in nostalgic marketing and is helpful for the original theories of brand marketing and experiential marketing to deepen further. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses the approach of the empirical study. Based on the literature review, a theoretical model of the impact of nostalgic emotion (NE) on brand trust and brand attachment is constructed and corresponding research hypotheses are proposed. Then nostalgia-themed restaurants are selected to complete a questionnaire survey, and SPSS22.0 and LISREL8.70 are used for data analysis and hypothesis testing. Findings The results of the paper show that NE consists of four dimensions in the context of China: atmosphere nostalgia, interpersonal nostalgia, family nostalgia and personal nostalgia. Among these, NE has a significant positive impact on brand trust and brand attachment; further, brand trust has a significant positive impact on brand attachment and plays a partial mediating role in the impact of NE on the latter. Research limitations/implications As the nostalgic restaurant industry is the research object, the theoretical model described here may be limited to this specific industry. The potential applicability of the theoretical model to other service industries requires further study. Practical implications The results of the paper are helpful in building a good nostalgic experience, increasing consumer trust in restaurant brands, and strengthening the connection between NE and restaurant brand reconstruction. Social implications The results of the paper on the impact of NE on brand trust and brand attachment provide a referential basis and guide for services’ companies (e.g. restaurants) to revitalize the services’ brands. Originality/value The first contribution is that NE scale is constructed for the nostalgia-themed restaurants. The second contribution is that the paper reveals the mechanism of the impact of NE on brand trust and brand attachment.

Abstract:
Individuals who have been exposed to and internalized two cultures vary in the degree to which they perceive their cultural identities as compatible (bicultural identity integration; BII). An experiment tested whether nostalgia, an emotion that is prevalent among bicultural individuals, influences BII and does so via acculturation orientation toward the host culture. Participants were originally from Greece, living in other European countries. We instructed them to recall nostalgic or ordinary events either from their host country or home country. We then assessed acculturation orientation and BII. We hypothesized and found that host-nostalgia increased BII both directly and indirectly via a more positive acculturation orientation toward the host culture. The findings extend the literature on factors that facilitate BII, and showcase the potential of nostalgia to improve biculturality.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 166-172.
The reason for this study was to determine if there is any connection between nostalgia and the debunking effect in the work of N.P. van Wyk Louw Starting with a thorough explanation of the term nostalgia to establish any implications the word might have. They can be summarised as: A longing for a simple life without loneliness where the person will feel at home. A desire to reach a better understanding of God and the primordial as the source of all life. Nostalgia develops as a result of a interrelationship between the past, present and the future and an interrelationship between the abstract and concrete aspects of nostalgia. In short: Nostalgia is a desire to establish an Utopian existence. It was found that the secondary literature on the topic is of a limited nature. The literature relating to Van Wyk Louw concentrates mostly on Nuwe Verse and Tristia and especially on the type of language used in "Klipwerk" and the fact that the author resided in the Netherlands while writing these two books. To outline the developement of nostalgic tendencies, the theme-poem of every book was looked at and it was found that Alleenspraak, Die Halwe Kring and Gestaltes en Diere encompasses the desire aspect of nostalgia, while Nuwe Verse and Tristia have a bearing on the remembrance aspect. The study of the love-, monologue- and prophet-figures showed that the search for certainty and unity leads has a debunking effect. Innocence brings the primordial into play which was studied using the poem "Die Swart Luiperd". The study showed that it is impossible to return to origin of life. With the debunking of the abstract aspects of nostalgia, attention was given to the earthly aspects. In this regard it was also found that the human being is isolated. Lastly, the poem "Groot Ode" was looked at to see if the poet has any answer to the debunking effect of nostalgia. Here irony was suggested as an answer to the debunking effect of nostalgia and as something that would make nostalgia bearable.

Villamandos-Ferreira, Alberto. "De la subversion a la nostalgia: El intelectual de la Gauche divine en su literatura." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/29376.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation studies the Gauche divine, a progressive upper class elite from Barcelona during the 1960's, and its reflection in five novels by leading contemporary Spanish authors. The Gauche divine performed their ideological agenda through a cosmopolitan, ironic stance defying the Franco regime and its traditional morality. Moreover, these intellectuals and professionals---architects, publishers, movie directors, designers, writers, poets---connected to the newest trends in critical thinking, arts and literature in Europe and updated Spanish culture. On the other hand, this intellectual group offered an alternative discourse to orthodox Marxism. In order to frame this intelligentsia in its historical and social context, we review the concept of the committed intellectual, according to the texts of Antonio Gramsci and Jean-Paul Sartre. However, in the 1960's---with arising counter-cultural movements, along with the sexual revolution---the committed intellectual becomes spectacular, in a cultural milieu ruled by mass media. Since their cultural production in literature and visual arts shows a narcissistic attitude, the Gauche divine cannot only be considered spectacular, but specular as well. Once the group dissapeared, their narcissism turned into a self indulgent nostalgia, as we can see in the remarkable number of their autobiographies up to date. However, we can find a critical counterpart in fiction by authors in the margins of the group. Our analysis of Ultimas tardes con Teresa (1966), by Juan Marse, and Los alegres muchachos de Atzavara (1987), by Manuel Vazquez Montalban focuses on the frustrated relationship between the committed intellectual and the Southern immigrant in Catalonia or charnego, whose body is seen as a political and a sexual fetish. Therefore, we propose a poscolonial approach to the representation of the charnego, as a racialized character. Luis Goytisolo's Recuento (1973) illustrates the process of political commitment of the middle-upper class intellectual in Franco's Spain, from ideological conversion to disenchantment. Through Michel Foucault's discourse analysis, we discuss the position of the critical intellectual within the Communist Party. Finally, we explore historical memory, nostalgia and the conflict between ethics and aesthetics in Felix de Azua's Historia de un idiota contada por el mismo (1986) and Momentos decisivos (2000).

Abstract:
Basing our analysis on the concepts of ‘emotion’, ‘feeling’, and ‘mood’ as defined by data from the cognitive sciences, we argue that human emotions are both universal and intrinsically linked to literary and artistic chronotopes. In her study of 'reflective' and 'restorative' nostalgia, Svetlana Boym (2001) shows that 'nostalgia' itself represents pure ambivalence that takes on a particular shape in response to the mood, thoughts, and psychological state of the author. Its ultimate expression might assume the form of either monological ideology or of paradoxical existential emotion. It is this second type of nostalgia that we can link most closely link to understandings of both 'melancholy' and 'identity' or 'self-consciousness'. Brooding and melancholic toska is shared by persons who suffer from what we might call 'existential ambivalence'; these persons are 'mercurials' in the terminology of Yuri Slezkine (2004). Within the field of Russian literature, this 'mercurial' sense of melancholy is particularly well developed.

Abstract:
In the literature of the last decade, new motives have appeared, which form “value centers” in the “ideological outlook” of modernity, to use the words by M. Bakhtin. They define the problems of modern Russian literature. But turning to them does not show acquisitions, but rather an intensive search, the need for which is great. Literature as a sphere of social consciousness records the dramatic lack of certain existential landmarks of modern man. The article contains an attempt to identify some of these value centers that can provide modern man with social and ontological guidelines. Among them are the problem of time, historical themes, nostalgia, and the search for the image of a modern leader.

Abstract:
The article compares the poetics of embodiment of the image of Moscow in the prose of outstanding Russian writers Yu. Polyakov and Yu. Trifonov. The image of Moscow in the works of Trifonov and Polyakov is autobiographical and filled with the signs of time and the authors’personal attitudes. Moscow in the works of both writers has temporal and spatial multilayeredness. Urban toponymy is widely represented in the literary works of both authors. Both of them resort to the use of spatial oppositions. In Yu. Polyakov's work a new spatial opposition "city - province" appears, mythologems are actualized, which are absent in Trifonov's works. The authors' attitudes to the ongoing changes differ: if Trifonov is dominated by the nostalgia for old Moscow, Polyakov, a master of "the grotesque realism", depicts urban realities satirically.

Abstract:
The task of reviewing the silences present in hegemonic histories emerges at the beginning of the 20th century, seeking to provide a more amplified way of understanding the history of peoples and nations subjected to colonial subjugation. Rufino (2019) considers that this space of decolonization presents itself under the name of “encruzilhada” (crossroads) and understands the potentialities of the orixá Exu, of Yoruba spirituality: the orixá of communication, of the paths and the guardian of axé (vital energy). Exu disarray what exist to reconstruct— therefore, since the encruzilhada is Exu’s place, it is a space that allows the crossing of knowledge produced as deviations from colonial impositions on so-called official knowledge, a process which the author names “cruzo” (cross): the encruzilhada is a refusal to everything put as absolute; Exu is the movement of that encruzilhada. In addition to the positivization of the knowledge and ways of living of peoples who have suffered, over the centuries, from numerous processes of inferiority, it is necessary to insert this knowledge in the cultural elements of the present— and in the conceptions about the future. It is in this context that, regarding the experience of Afro-diasporic peoples, a global aesthetic movement that encompasses arts, literature, audiovisual and academic research emerges: Afrofuturism (YASZEK, 2013). Afrofuturism goal is to connect the dilemmas of the African diaspora to technological innovations, commonly unavailable to the descendants of the enslaved, and it aims to establish possible future scenarios— scenarios that contemplate the presence and, furthermore, the protagonism of black people (YASZEK, 2013). To this end, the movement breaks with the Western linear chronology and starts to consider time in a cyclic way, interweaving past, present and future in a single composition: in the same way that Exu, in the Yoruba cosmology, killed a bird yesterday with a stone that has only been thrown today, Afrofuturism weaves a web of historical and cultural retaking of African memory with questions that arise from the reflection of the problems faced by black people in the present, in order to think about a positive and possible future, once a dystopian scenario is already weighing on the shoulders of them. In the frontier of visual arts and design, Luiz Gustavo Nostalgia, a creator based on Rio de Janeiro, dismantles existing images and rearranges them through collages to create a new intention of meaning. His work evokes the cruzo on the principle of rearranging— central to collages— with the widespread rearrangement of our ways of living and understanding society— based on an Afrofuturistic conception of world— by celebrating African motifs, culture and spirituality, allied to the already acquainted aesthetics of “future” (such as the galaxy, bright lights and robotic elements). Through your creation, the artist is capable of presenting a future where black people do exist as protagonists and have their culture, past and roots celebrated.

Abstract:
In São Paulo/Brazil, between the years 1950 and 1980, porcelain sculptures representing courtesy scenes were fashionable in wealthy and middle-class homes. Several Brazilian factories started to produce such images and many others were imported, the most of them from Germany. These representations were inspired by the fêtes gallants, a rococo style genre from the 18th century. Factories like Meissen, Limoges and Capodimonte produced thousands of copies which circulated in Western Europe and the Russian Empire. During the 19th century, from French institutional policies, the fêtes galantes were revalued along with the recovery of the rococo. This political and cultural movement resulted not only in domestic interiors decorated with authentic pieces from the 18th century gathered together by collectors, but also in the production of new objects. Following decorative practices, studies anachronistically reclassified 18th artisans as artists, constructing their biographies, circumscribing their peculiarities, and identifying their works. Many pieces from the privates collections ended in museums. The porcelain aristocratic figures won the world and are produced until today. It was at the end of the 19th century, in the region of Thuringia, that the technique of lace porcelain emerged. Produced by women in a male-dominated environment, the technique involved the use of cotton fabric soaked with porcelain mass which was then sewed and molded over the porcelain bodies of male and female figures. After that, the piece was placed in the oven at high temperature, burning the fabric and leaving the lace porcelain. It is significant and relevant for the purposes of this research that the lace porcelain technique was never recognized as a object of interest by the academic literature on porcelain. It is likely that the presence of the female labor, the practice of sewing and the use of fabric have been interpreted by the male academic and amateur elite as discredit elements. Added to this, the lace porcelain became very popular in the 20th century. The reinterpretation of rococo in the 20th century was also understood as a lack of artistic inventiveness associated with marketing interests, which resulted in the marginalization of these sculptures. What is proposed here is to study these objects as pieces of domestic decoration practices, recognizing in them capacities to act on the production of social, age and gender distinctions. I intend, therefore, to demonstrate how these small and seemingly insignificant objects were associated with decorative practices of fixing women in the domestic space in Brazil during the 20th century. They acted not alone but in connection with other contemporary phenomena such as post-war fashion, the glamorization of personalities from the American movie and European aristocracy and the rise of Disney movies, which promoted the gallant pair as a romantic idea for children in the western world.

Abstract:

Abstract:
With advancing medical technology and the rise of an aging society, the global population of dementia patients is increasing. Dementia is an irreversible degenerative disease that leads to a gradual decline in cognitive abilities, including memory, spatial judgment, time perception, and language skills. Despite the availability of medication to alleviate symptoms, a complete cure is unattainable, and treatment can only delay disease progression with limited effectiveness. Recent literature explores non-pharmacological treatments for dementia, including reminiscence therapy, and investigates the use of Virtual Reality (VR) as a therapeutic approach. Unlike traditional methods, VR technology can create realistic virtual environments, enhancing sensory and cognitive experiences. Related studies have explored the combination of visual and auditory experiences in the VR environment, incorporating sensory stimuli such as touch and smell to enhance the sensory and cognitive abilities of older adults. Previous research indicates that combining multiple sensory stimuli can enhance memory and spatial judgment abilities. Therefore, the present study focuses on developing a VR game that integrates multiple sensory stimuli to investigate its impact on the memory, spatial judgment, and time perception of older adults. To achieve this goal, the research team invited experts to develop a VR game with multiple sensory stimuli, combining visual, auditory, tactile, and olfactory elements, with a theme centered around agricultural life. We conducted in-depth discussions on multi-sensory experiences, and preliminary feedback was obtained through interviews with elderly participants and observations by experts. Experts found that the nostalgic therapeutic farming game that combined VR technology and multiple sensory elements resulted in better performance of older adults in task judgment and memory retrieval. Despite the limited number of participants and this study's short training period, future comprehensive experiments and long-term observations are necessary to obtain more substantial evidence.
