That Jesus’ death is uniquely portrayed as a spectacle of death in Luke’s Gospel is widely acknowledged. Most scholarship has focused on the figure of Jesus, his self-control and emotions, to debate how much it concurs with the ancient ideal of noble death. This paper analyzes the role of the crowd in Luke’s passion to argue that Luke has framed the cross in a manner fitting of death in the arena. Modern Muslim thinkers who try to locate and construct constitutional tenets based on the Islamic tradition face various difficulties, for they have to address a segment of an audience that expects an exposition comparable to the West's in terms of terminologies, institutions, and remedies, as well as to draw from the best practices of Islamic history and modern Muslim societies. It is always fustrating to learn that Islam's constitutional history, despite its richness in individual constitutional tenets, loses some of its utility in modern Muslim societies due to systemic changes caused by gl

In his text, Behavioral Neurology of White Matter, Filley focuses our attention on the role of white matter in neurobehavioral functioning. He makes the point that much of clinical neuroscience, including neuropsychology and behavioral neurology, has focused on cognitive correlates of cortical lesions and disorders. Historically in neuropsychology, we have acknowledged the role of white matter more typically in vague terms of connecting pathways, but there has been a decided emphasis on cortical and subcortical gray matter regions as “where the action is.” Filley's insightful writing clearly s

Brandom’s appeal to authorities (Sellars, Frege, Dummett) falls flat; in particular, his reading of Frege’s early work as inferentialist in Brandom’s sense is a misinterpretation. Her studies of thought and culture are not the work of a systematic theorist; they are too much involved with personal taste and response, too free-ranging and open-ended to attract disciplined followers. Sontag's writings receive little direct critical attention at present, though she is often quoted on photography or film, or used to support various theses on post-modernism. An interesting series of shared motifs and theological nuances are revealed when materials and themes from the Qur’an that relate to Jesus and John the Baptist are compared with their counterparts in Luke’s Gospel. Some previously acknowledged similarities between passages in the Qur’an and the non-canonical gospels are revisited, with attention given to likely background influences from Luke’s Gospel. The implications of the study for future perceptions of Luke’s Gospel and for traditional claims about the origins of the Qur’an are briefly considered.
