Abstract:
This essay proposes that we turn to James Baldwin’s work to assess the cost of, and think alternatives to, the cultures of traumatization whose proliferation one witnesses in contemporary U.S. academia. Beginning with some recent examples, the essay briefly places these cultures into a genealogy of onto-ethics whose contemporary forms arose with the reconfiguration of diasporic histories in the idioms of psychoanalysis and deconstructive philosophy in 1990s trauma theory. Baldwin speaks to the contemporary moment as he considers the outcome of trauma’s perpetuation in an autobiographical scene from “Notes of a Native Son.” In this scene—which restages Bigger Thomas’s murderous compulsion in Native Son—he warns us against embracing one’s traumatization as a mode of negotiating the world. In foregoing what Sarah Schulman has recently called the “duty of repair,” such traumatized engagement prevents all search for the kind of “commonness” whose early articulation can be found in Aristotle’s query after “the common good” (to koinon agathon). With Baldwin, the present essay suggests the urgency of returning to the question of “the common good”: while mindful of past critiques, which have observed in this concept’s deployment a sleight-of-hand by which hegemonic positions universalize their interests, we should work to actualize the unfinished potential of Aristotle’s idea. Baldwin’s work on diasporic modernity provides an indispensable archive for this effort.

Abstract:
Dr. Stewart served as discussant for the Santa Fe paper session "Working On, Working For, and Working With American Indians" from which this special issue of PA is drawn. His most visible applied anthropology role has been as expert witness. He reports that between 1950 and 1983 he testified in numerous Indian Claims cases on behalf of the Chippewa, Shoshone, Ute, Southern Paiute, Northern Paiute, Klamath, Washo, Gosiute, and Indians of California, helping these groups receive awards from the Indian Claims Commission in excess of $200 million. Most recently, he was involved in the San Juan Southern Paiute effort to obtain federal acknowledgement as a tribe. However, Dr. Stewart is best known for his testimony on behalf of members of the Native American Church who have sued state courts for the legal right to practice the peyote religion openly. His work in this area has spanned the thirty years from 1960 through the present. Dr. Stewart discussed the origins of anthropological concern with the peyote religion and his own role in defending its practice in his 1983 Malinowski Award address at the SfAA meetings in San Diego, CA. The following are excerpts from the full text of that address, reprinted with permission from Human Organization 42(3), Fall 1983, pp. 189-194.

Abstract:
Booker T. Washington's Up from Slavery (1901) is one of the most famous American autobiographies, yet it is unfortunately also one of the least analyzed. Compared with the American autobiographies that we frequently study and teach, it seems meager and unchallenging. Unlike Whitman and Thoreau, Washington does not propose experiments in form, and he does not undertake a profound inner exploration as his text unfolds. He is not keenly conscious of his competitive relation to the autobiographical writings that have preceded his own and unlike Henry Adams and Henry James, he does not manifest a high degree of selfreflective awareness about the act of telling the story of his life. Nor does Washington's book display the sophisticated rendering of personal and public life that W. E. B. DuBois manages in Dusk of Dawn (1940), the subtle and disturbing account of black adolescence and early maturity that Richard Wright crafts in Black Boy (1945), the stylistic vigor and intelligence that James Baldwin demonstrates in Notes of a Native Son (1955), or the explosive energy that Malcolm X unleashes in his autobiography (1965).

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes James Baldwin's essays as a method for understanding racial identity and authenticity. By using Vetta Sanders-Thompson's racial identification parameters, I suggest that Baldwin's struggle with his identity as a black American is crucial to deposing the idea of a monolithic black experience, which opens up new ways of analyzing African American literature.

Piamonte, Stephanie. "The Criminological Imagination: Mills, Reflexive Analysis, & Richard Wright's "Native Son"." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/28780.

Full text
Abstract:
The promise of Mills's (1959) classic sociological imagination for criminology is revisited and assumptions about the adequacy and usefulness of fiction in terms of its analytical and explanatory potential are challenged. The criminological imagination, as a quality of mind, analytic framework and method of knowledge production, provides an ideal meta-framework with which to consider fiction. The theories of Jack Katz (1988) and the symbolic interactionists further develop Mills's concept of biography, while the Birmingham School (Clarke, Hall, Jefferson, & Roberts, 2006) expands on Mills's concept of society; integrating these within the meta-framework of the criminological imagination produces a reflexive analysis of Native Son, a classic novel by Richard Wright (2005). In so doing, fiction is demonstrated to be a legitimate object of criminological inquiry that challenges criminological conventions, clarifies and critiques criminological concepts, and creates and communicates criminological knowledge.

Abstract:
At this time of digital technologies, the profusion of received and shared images, speed and mobility have never been so evident, we can discuss the question of the relationship between gestures, connected objects and creative artistic practices, which can appear as “amateurs”. In a world now localizable, known and recognized by all, the experience of traditional travel would have given way to navigation on the Internet every day? What can cause the presence of this tool in the artist experimentation? How does he use it? Does he show, although, something of this experience? Do new forms appear with the accompaniment of the mobile phone, intelligent? Do they change our perception and relationship to the image? What does the digital environment produce on these forms, which, when they are revealed, or if they are revealed, are contrasting to the so-called "traditional" works of art. They constitute modes of resistance to the "recognized" conceptions of art like those of the work presentation. One of the essential object of the thesis is the reflection on the act of image realized with the mobile, or the gesture “made” often more than the eye "sees" or controls the frame. It is an artistic and reflective experience at the heart of cumulative mobility; where a new work paradigm, modes of diffusion is specifically thought in relation to the captured image

Abstract:
Physical self-concept plays a critical role in the learning process and motor performance. Based on structural equation modeling methodology, four studies supported the cross-national generalizability of a physical self-concept model over several French samples and emphasized the usefulness of this construct in a causation research exploring relations among physical self- perceptions and environment variables. The factorial validity of an Australian physical self-concept instrument: The Physical Self-Description questionnaire (PSDQ) by H. W. Marsh was supported with a sample of French adolescents in a school environment. Moreover, the within- construct validity was supplemented by an MTMM analysis, involving two other physical self- concept models, which supported convergent and discriminant validity. Pursuing the validation on-going process, between-construct validity was next tested and supported in relation to a set of external criteria from the EUROFIT fitness test battery. Finally, a longitudinal panel study assessing causal directions among physical self-concept, P. E. Achievements, strength, cardiorespiratory endurance and physical activity objective measures provided some support for causal relations between physical self-concept and fitness tests and better evidence for reciprocal effects between physical self-concept and P. E. Achievements. Additionally, it was shown that these causal relations were not mediated by global self-concepts

Abstract:
This dissertation looks at the work of Euclides da Cunha\'s Os Sertões (1902), Richard Wright\'s Native Son (1940) and Paulo Lins\'s Cidade de Deus (1997). It seeks to be a creative reading of the books and their critical fortune by way of a comparative approach, ultimately allowing new aspects, such as hegemonic and counter-hegemonic elements, to come to the fore. The basis of this study is that literary and critical texts are all inserted in a greater political field. This research draws upon neighboring disciplines and theorists such as: Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Ranajit Guha, Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari and Jacques Derrida.

Abstract:
In this article, the authors consider some aspects of teaching the Japanese language in an unnatural language environment, using the example of the philological faculty of Nizhny Novgorod State University. The article summarizes the experience of a native Japanese teacher, notes both the positive aspects (creating the conditions of the language environment) and the difficulties that participants in the educational process encounter (relevance of the content of educational materials; level of students' independence in learning). In addition, one of the authors notes the fact that the Japanese language teaching methodology shows tendencies towards the widespread use of IT technologies, as well as online educational platforms for the development, primarily, of students' communication skills.

Abstract:
In this article, the author considers various aspects of teaching Chinese in Russia, and also specifies some factors that affect the successful mastery of the Chinese language, in particular, learning in a natural language environment as a part of student exchange programs, during which students study language material in class with native speaker and have the opportunity of extensive language practice outside the school. In addition, the author notes the importance of the sociocultural component in learning - familiarity with the traditions and holidays of China, thereby increasing students' interest in the culture of the country of the language being studied. The article also notes the difficulties that both students and the teacher encounter in the classroom at North-Eastern State University, caused by the fact that in the same group are both students who have undergone language training in China and those who have not yet had a chance to study there. This is manifested in different levels of language proficiency by students, primarily in the level of their oral speech skills. This situation affects the group's learning speed and requires the teacher, in turn, to have a differentiated approach to conducting classes. The author suggests maximizing the practice of students using the Chinese language - conducting classes in the language they are studying, stimulating them to communicate only in Chinese within the class, and also, if possible, beyond. The basis of this practice is proposed to put thematic-situational training, for example, within the framework of the topic “Shopping”, interactively consider situations “in a clothing store”, “in a mobile phone store”, etc. At the same time, the author notes that the same situations proposed in the educational literature are perceived differently by native speakers and students, since they are filled with realities characteristic of China and different from the usual realities of Russia. To familiarize students with similar sociocultural content, it is proposed to use multimedia teaching aids - video and graphic presentations.

Abstract:
Abstract Continued technology scaling has led to exposure of many ‘weak-points’ in the designs fabricated in some of the most advanced technology nodes. Weak-points are certain layout patterns which are found to be sensitive to process non-idealities and have a higher tendency to cause defects. They may be coded in the form of Pattern Matching (PM) rules and included within the Design for Manufacturability Guidelines (DFMGs) to ensure product manufacturability. Often, during Integrated Circuit (IC) design, a trade-off is made between meeting performance specifications and complying with DFMGs. As a result, designs may reach the foundry with some DFMG violations. Fixing such violations generally causes a ‘ripple effect’ where one change requires many changes in other metal layers, making the process tedious. Therefore, providing a ranked list of guidelines to the designers helps them in assessing the criticality of violations, prioritizing, and fixing them accordingly. Past research suggests using diagnosis data to determine the impact of DFMG violations. However, this is a reactive approach wherein DFMGs are ranked only based on their hard-defect causing nature. To make the ranking process more robust, we propose a proactive silicon validation based approach which not only considers the yield loss due to hard-defects but also takes into account the parametric and reliability degradation caused by DFMG violations. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology through on-silicon experiments on an advanced Fully-Depleted Silicon-On-Insulator (FD-SOI) technology node.

Abstract:
Abstract: It is imagined to be a Le Corbusier employee who is commissioned to draft a house based on some original drawings. These drawings are made by Le Corbusier in 1942, during his stay in Algeria, and refer to a house designed for an agricultural property near the Mountain Chenoua which belongs to Peyrissac family. The original drawings have been provided by Le Corbusier Foundation. Also, The Œuvre Complète provides information for this project, although mostly consists of a selection of the same drawings accompanied by some explanatory notes. For operational reasons it is decided to use current technology, so all drawings have been made by computer. Basically it has been focused on a series of drawings, which it is believed are the last ones and represent the ground, first floor plan and the roof, also a cross-section of the house, and two axonometrics. It has been paid attention to other existing documentation, especially drawings that refer to the implementation of the house in its surrounding, the organization and the program requirements, as well as any specific information about dimensions. The house has been inserted in the original plot and the ground floor, first floor, and a cross section have been drawn, based on the information provided by the original drawings of the Master. As an exercise, a hypothetical construction detail of the roof has been drawn. Palabras Clave: Le Corbusier; Peyrissac; Chenoua; Argel; Croquis; Casa. Abstract:
This work discusses the importance of the site in the morphological structuring of urban centres. Studies on the implantation of the city of Belo Horizonte, located in the state of Minas Gerais Brazil, show that the occupation of the city occurred initially in the valleys. This was due to the favourable conditions of the topography, which allowed an orthogonal layout in the central area. In spite of this, since the city’s foundation, the most rugged areas have been occupied by favelas, whose layout differed from the dominant pattern. As flat areas became scarce, the hilly regions, possessing long strips of land, were also subdivided and exploited due to their substantially lower land prices. Although the favelas sprung up spontaneously and the new settlements were planned, both had similarities in the layout of the streets which were adjusted to the steep contours and the geological conditions of the terrain. At the same time, the plot defined another configuration in the subdivisions, in which the building was occupied by only a single family and, in most cases, the building was separated from the street by high walls. As a consequence, the relationship between public and private space became severely compromised. In the case of the favelas, the formal inexistence of the plot is demonstrated in the juxtaposition of the dwellings, in which each residence is constructed above another in extremely confined space. The relationship with the street also differs in these places, since the first floor often freely connects to the street, integrating the dwelling with the public space and thus contributing to the social life of the community. This is furthermore in contrast to the previously noted walled environments characterising planned areas. The analysis of these parameters could profitably be utilised in new designs that appropriate some of the popular solutions better suited to the environment, and in turn, integrate them into public policy.References: FERREIRA, M.
