Abstract:
Summary: Building on three texts of Espriu – Primera història d’Esther [The Story of Esther] (1947–48), “Sota la fredor parada d’aquests ulls” [Under the still coolness of these eyes] (1972–76), and El doctor Rip [Doctor Rip] (1931/1972–73] – facts and arguments are put forward concerning the writer’s contribution to the Catalan language. Special attention is drawn to the fact that, even though Espriu remained true to the Fabrian codification, he distanced himself from the version the Noucentisme movement had produced. [Keywords: Salvador Espriu, Catalan language, Fabra codification]

Abstract:
Abstract The marriage of tradition and modernity is a central aspect of mod ern Catalan culture, an issue that virtually every generational move ment has had to address, because what is at stake in it are the twin issues of social cohesion and national difference. No other period has been more successful in this respect than Noucentisme, the conser vative, Catholic, neoclassical movement of the first two decades of this century, which played a major role in the institutionalization of Catalan culture, and which sought to modernize Catalan society through a set of reformist policies in order to avoid a revolutionary fracture.
