Full textExamining the literary tradition of the short narrative genre, in france, spain, and italy, between 1250 and 1466, this thesis analyses the early short-story genesis. This study points out the so-called "miror" pieces of work, that stand out as landmarks and that will bring to define a new litarary form. Outlining the narrative constants, this research aims at enlightning on the structural isotopes and on the links between texts, belonging to different cultures and periods. The elaboration of the genre aesthetic code is being analysed through time and space datas, characters and narrative trajectories. This work baselines evidence the structural specifications of the genre, and underline the highly functional marked features, and the originality of a narration built on a "swing point". Beyond the marrative techniques, the medioeval short narrative prose, annoncing therefore the "novella" to come, is characterized by the objective, emotionless view through which the writer paints man and society. Following the historical and culturel changes of the short narrative prose, this thesis shows the emersion, as early as the medioeval period, of aesthetics based on the concept of distance, that the "novella" will bear out, and that will bloom out through the modern short-story

Full textThis work is composed of two parts. In the first one, I critically analyze how Boccaccio was read by the main theorists of the novel (Schlegel, Hegel, Lukács, Bakhtine, Auerbach); once described individually, these authors are later confronted with each other. A third chapter deals with new perspectives in the theory of the novel, which provide the foundation for a new interpretation of Boccaccio’s Decameron.The second part is devoted to Boccaccio’s works in themselves. First, I analyze Boccaccio’s rewriting of the dantean episode of Paolo and Francesca (Inf. V). In the same chapter I also discuss Boccaccio’s theory of the fabula as it is developed in his Genealogie deorum gentilium, by focusing on crucial issues such as allegory, knowledge and consolation. I conclude the chapter with an inquiry on the Filocolo’s narrative framework; particular attention is devoted to the episode of the «Questioni d’amore» and to its functions in the economy of the whole work. The second chapter puts forward a new reading of the Decameron, based on the notion of ‘compassion’; I analyze the Decameron’s narrative framework on the ground of philosophical and ethical categories. I also explore how the beliefs’ device is shaped by Boccaccio; the chapter ends with an enquiry around the concept of fortune, its theorization and representation in the Decameron. The third and final chapter is devoted to the individual interpretation of five novellas (IV, 4; V, 1; II, 7; II, 9; X, 10)

Full textMatteo Bandello's Novelle (Lucca, 1554, Lyon, 1573) swiftly disappear from the Italian editorial distribution: they will be published again in full version not before 1791-1793, with the Livorno edition, by Gaetano Poggiali, presented under the fallacious indication of 'London, by Riccardo Banker'. In between these chronological extremes, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries' Italy, only a residual survivance of his works can be recorded, which has not yet been subject to a comprehensive and detailed reconstruction. In 1560 Ascanio Centorio of Ortensi circulates a version of the collection without its dedication letters, with rewritten novelle, selected and mixed with those of other authors. As of 1562 twenty novels of Bandello will appear in the Cento novelle scelte da i più nobili scrittori della lingua volgare, the anthology thought by Francesco Sansovino and printed several times in Venice from 1561 to 1619. Eventually eight other novels will be translated in Latin by the Perugian scholar Marco Antonio Bonciari in his collection of exempla, entitled Thrasymenus sive Anthologiae Illustrium exemplorum Decades duae (Perugia 1641) and Decades tres (Perugia 1648).To this fragmentation of the original novelliere corresponds the gradual disappearance of the author: first denying his privileged setting, represented by the dedicatory letters, then even his proper name. Examining the above listed works in detail and in their whole, we shall ponder the reasons for the poor audience of the princeps edition, the moral, literary and editorial problems it could raise, as well as its true circulation amongst readers of this age

Full textStudies about female characters in Stendhal’s and Mérimée’s works are in no doubt numerous. However, the aim of our work is to highlight the relationship between these authors and the theories that prevailed from the eighteenth century onwards. We refer in particular to both the four temperaments theory and the climate the theory and their influence on the creation of female characters, protagonists in the stories we chose for our corpus: the Chroniques italiennes of Stendhal and the shorts stories La Vénus d’Ille, Colomba and Carmen of Mérimée. Our purpose is to unveil a new aspect of the female problematic by analysing Southern Europe woman human type observed from the perspective of the influence of the above-mentioned theories. We also linked the form chosen by the two writers (short story, little novel) with the themes they address and the effect they want to produce on the reader. To which extent is the short story type contributing to the effect of violence supposed to be produced by the depiction of the South? Short stories serve the efficiency of a purpose at the same time aesthetic, ethnological and ethical. This study consists of three parts. First of all, we examine the the evolution of both four temperaments theory and climate theory, as well as the eighteenth, beginning of the nineteenth century historical and cultural background which also influences Stendhal and Mérimée literary creation. Secondly, we reflect upon Stendhal’s and Mérimée’s poetics in relation to short stories. Finally, we analyse the female characters in relation to the preliminary studies previously mentioned
Gli studi sui personaggi femminili di Stendhal e Mérimée sono sicuramenti numerosi. Ciò nonostante, il nostro lavoro prevede un nuovo approccio che ha come obiettivo di mettere in evidenza l’influenza che le correnti di pensiero, che predominano a partire dal diciottesimo secolo, hanno sulla produzione letterario di Stendhal e Mérimée. In particolare, ci riferiamo alla teoria dei quattro temperamenti e alla teoria dei climi rispetto alla creazione dei personaggi femminili, protagonisti delle storie che costituiscono il corpus delle Cronache italiane e delle novelle di Mérimée, ossia La Venere d’Ille, Colomba et Carmen. Il nostro scopo è quello di mettere in luce un nuovo aspetto della problematica femminile, analizzando il tipo umano della donna meridionale studiato sotto la prospettiva delle teorie sopra menzionate. Abbiamo anche messo in relazione la forma letteraria adottata dai due scrittori (la novella, il piccolo romanzo) con l’argomento che trattano e l’effetto che vogliono produrre sul lettore. Concretamente, in che modo la forma breve che scelgono contribuisce all’effetto di violenza che la rappresentazione del Sud è presupposta produrre? La novella serve a rendere efficace un pensiero estetico, etnologico et etico. Lo studio si divide in tre parti. In un primo momento, ci interessiamo all’evoluzione della teoria dei temperamenti e alla teoria dei climi, in seguito, al contesto storico-culturale del periodo a cavallo tra diciottesimo e diciannovesimo secolo che influenza anche la creazione letteraria di Stendhal et Mérimée. Full textDuring the 15th century, the attraction of the Decameron on both some of the most prominent figures of humanism (Antonio Loschi, Leonardo Bruni, Enea Silvio Piccolomini, Leon Battista Alberti, or Bartolomeo Facio) and some lesser authors (such as Filippo Beroaldo, Benedetto Colucci, and Francesco Tedaldi) gave rise to a whole corpus of original stories and Latin translations of isolated short stories by Boccace, which testifies of the cross-fertilization at work between vernacular and humanist cultures. In the context of the 15th century, more particularly of 15h century literature written in the vernacular, which was marked by the propensity of short stories to be rooted in popular tradition, the humanist corpus is characterized by the willingness of its authors to bring the genre to a higher level. As regards the style, Latin prose, which is highly reminiscent of antiquity, is called on to elevate the writing, while from the point of view of the content and the goals to be reached, putting the stress on the historical and educational dimension of short stories is to ennoble the genre

Full textThe Siculo-Tuscan poets, imitators of the Sicilian poets who lived at the court of Frederic II, do not constitute a school in the modern sense of the word : the definition of Siculo-Tuscan has not only a geographic connotation, but, first of all, it indicates a chronological distinction from the Sicilian poets tout-court. In most cases we have to do with an amount of experiments which mainly follow the canons of the Sicilians and represent a crucial moment for the formation of Italian literary language. The publication of the Clpio (Concordanze della lingua italiana delle origini 1992) invites to reflect upon editorial criteria and upon the necessity of commenting on texts which remain unexplained up to now (Panvini edition 1962-64). In order to fill this gap, we proposed ourselves to make a commented edition of a significant choice of the Siculo-Tuscan, especially Florentine poets (20 sonnets, 1 double sonnet, 19 canzoni ; the order of the texts respects the last edition). .

Full textThis study aims to investigate temporalities in Matteo Bandello’s Novelle (1554 and 1573) and Giovan Battista Giraldi Cinzio’s Ecatommiti (1565). These two literary works are distinct from other sixteenth-century collections of novellas in their chronological proximity and, above all, their structural innovations and peculiarities: temporal and formal fragmentation of the frame story in Bandello’s collection; and the irruption, amid the narrative sequences of Giraldi’s novelliere, of a long theoretical text, Dialoghi della vita civile, made up of three parts that correspond to the three stages of life (childhood, adolescence and adulthood). The authors, who experienced the upheavals of the Italian Wars, then stability restored on a new foundation, approach the model of the Decameron in very different ways, while each giving an account of a time of social, political, cultural and scientific change that questions many aspects of nature and man’s mastery over Time. After a first part, which concentrates on the treatment of chronological time and concrete, measurable data (indications of time, representations of the stages of human life), the study considers the fictional presentation of time lines in the two collections, in order to grasp the possible theoretical issues of the narrative construction of time scales. The analysis will especially focus on the relationships between “narrative time” and “discourse time”, as well as on the links between temporal and spatial dimensions. Finally, the study addresses the issue of putting the historical present of the authors in writing, relying on the linguistic and historiographical views held by each of them. From this point of view, the different (though sometimes convergent) perspectives of Bandello and Giraldi influenced the way in which History was put in writing in their respective collections, triggering an intricate relationship between near and distant past, present and future

Full textBased on the novels and novelettes by twelve authors (in alphabetical order, J. Belda, J. M. Carretero, J. Frances, A. Hernandez Cata, A. De Hoyos y Vinent, A. Insua, R. Lopez de Haro, P. Mata, A. Retana, F Sassone, F. Trigo et E. Zamacois), this study proposes to examine the birth, rise and decline of a movement in popular literature in Spain between 1894 and 1936 in relation to the new publishing deal, French literary influences and the centres of interest of the Spanish reading public of the time. The first part includes a presentation of the authors (through their biographies) and the magazines and publishing houses that brought out their writings. This panorama of Spain’s publishing world is supplemented with a survey of the circulation of these works abroad - essentially in France as well as the cinema adaptation of some of them. There follows a chapter entitled ' the book as an object ', which deals with the elements directly peripheral to the text - titles, covers, jacket flaps, back covers, illustrations, advertisement etc. Secondly, the analysis bears upon the contents of these works through a study of themes and characters, bringing to the fore the recurrent and permanent features in the writing of those pages together with their French literary inspiration. Their close links with the concerns of contemporary readers - among which the questioning about sexuality and the position of women in society hold a dominating place - is also examined

Full textWritten around 1462 at the Court of Burgundy, the anonymous Cent Nouvelles nouvelles mark the arrival of the novella in France. As an inheritor of the oral tradition, the work contains many similarities with the old fabliaux and with many theatrical and comical texts of the 15th-16th centuries. Born at a moment when literature started to confirm it’s written status but kept at the same time it’s oral origins, the book fills an important place in the literary culture of it’s time. It was very popular with the public of the end of the Middle Ages and of the Renaissance, as we can see by the manuscripts and many early printed editions which contributed to it’s diffusion. The fact that most of these volumes are illustrated must not be neglected. In the book the images cristallize key moments of the narrative and function as a visual support of the written word. The scenes represented are small live pictures, but silent and still. The dramatizing of the narrative can also be seen in the way the text is writen. The author uses many procedures enabling him to dramatize the text : the use of space, the importance of gestuality, plays on identity, use of a vocabulary insisting on duplicity, the presence of oral marks. Also, the concrete exchanges between the book and the secular theatre of it’s time show that the novella contains dramatic possibilities. The Cent Nouvelles nouvelles are an important witness of the interdependence of genres at the end of the medieval period

Full textAs we inflect the semantics of the Latin noun "medium", we feel we unearth some of the characteristics of Italian literature as female writers from the Balkans compiled it. The thesis, titled Italian female writers from the Balkan migration, is a work that exploits devices borrowed from literature, linguistics and human geography alike, aiming at analysing the complete corpus of authors of short stories and novels in Italian who arrived to Italy following the migration wave that swept the Balkan peninsula in the nineties. "Median" is the geopolitical position of the region, sitting between the European "promised land" and the "East", both myths created by the colonising West; "mediator" is the role of these "subordinate" writers who, having reconstructed an individual identity in their autobiographic works, herald collective messages through a realist prose; lastly, the "medium" is the Italian language chosen to formulate a literature that can sometimes bring to life unexpected fantastic and surrealistic motifs
Declinando la semantica del sostantivo latino “medium”, ci sembra di scovare alcune delle caratteristiche della letteratura italiana redatta da scrittrici d’origine balcanica. La tesi dal titolo Scrittrici italiane della migrazione balcanica è un lavoro che si serve degli strumenti propri tanto alla letteratura e alla linguistica che alla geografia umana, al fine di analizzare il corpus completo delle autrici di racconti brevi o romanzi in lingua italiana, giunte in Italia al seguito di quell’ondata emigratoria che negli anni Novanta scosse la Penisola balcanica. “Mediana” è la posizione geopolitica della regione, a cavallo tra la “terra promessa” europea e l’“Oriente”, miti entrambi creati dall’Occidente colonizzatore; “mediatore” è il ruolo di quelle scrittrici “subalterne” che, dopo aver ricostruito un’identità singolare nell’opera autobiografica, si fanno portavoce d’istanze collettive servendosi di una prosa di genere realista; “mezzo”, infine, è l’idioma italiano scelto per formulare una letteratura matura che può dar luogo, in alcuni casi, ad inattese tinte fantastico-surrealiste

Full textThis work presents a period in Thailand's history through the study of three different literary genres, poetry, song and short story. The 1970's were marked by an unusual instability and socio-political commitment. Students assembled to fight against the military government's authority, against the American presence and the Japanese economic invasion, defending manpower, peasants and factory workers. Their actions, backed up by the population, would lead to the big march of October 1973 and to the departure of the dictators. The three years period, which followed, was more democratic, though in October 1973 it would be severely interrupted by the return of the military to power. The first part of this work presents Thailand's literature from its origins to the XIII century; the second part depicts Thai society during the 1970's, from a social and historical perspective. The third and last part of this study presents extracts of poetry, songs and short stories from the 1970's. The texts are characterised by a great sincerity, revealing the society's hope for a greater justice. These works describe the people's difficult condition, they try to find and suggest solutions, calling for mobilisation and resistance. They aim to awaken the social conscience of oppressed and resigned people, resigned because of religious beliefs and because they are educated in the tradition that shows respect towards the king and the leaders. These writings, poetry, songs and short stories, which have not been enough to initiate a deep change, however, do bare passionate witness to this era

In addition to the author bibliography and a brief description of her personality, this study is composed of four main parts. A general des- cription placing the contemporary short story in the literary genre to which it belongs, an introduction to the analysis of the short stories of elizabeth taylor, followed by a study of a certain number of her short stories which best characterize her manner. These short stories are separated into themes : the study of child and adolescent psycho- logy, the study of women to women relationships, and the study of men to women relationships. The fourth part is a general conclusion of the short stories of taylor which identifies the recurring characteristics in her works : her vision of the world and her vision of individuals. This final part is concluded with an analysis of the style of the author, taking into consideration the methods she uses and showing that she finds a place in the tradi- tions of her most famous contemporaries

Full textThis paper makes the case for paradox as a narrative pattern, an aesthetic paradigm, and a category for interpretation in Grace Paley's fiction. Postulating paradox as always-already present in Paley, it investigates that "always-already" in what it reveals the most of Paley's writing and narrative strategies. It attempts to make clear that if Paley's narrative, just like any narrative, is the repository of the continuity of narrative discourse, then, that continuity, insofar as she is concerned, is predicated upon a host of discontinuous formal processes which ail concur to grant primacy to contingency (narrative openness and dissemination) over teleology (narrative closure) in her stories. It makes the point that it is from what it reveals of the functions of language and of the way her narrative plays out and outplays those functions that the voice, in Paley, may be said to be the key operative category of her fiction, and literature, both pure language and always-already world-containing and world-contained. Lastly, this paper puts forward the conditions under which the fictional in Paley can be construed as a void, dis/misplaced, missing itself and missing at its place -if only to reveal ail its fictionality

Full textBased upon three major fields of research (cultural sociology, contemporary prose and poetry) these studies resort to the concepts of fissure and disrupture as critical tools which are likely to shed a new light upon 20th century culture. This may concern examples of social fissures (the crisis of the rural world, of the church of florence, of such priviliged cities as tieste), of literary disruption (numerous emotional gaps in pavese's writings, but also in lampedusa's, landolfi's ortese's, morante's, bonaviri's, calvino's and buzzati's) or poetical fissures (in saba, but also in della casa, montale, caproni, basolini, and above all in luzi); all these examples enable us to bring together the various components of a culture which introjected the ideas of weakness, restlessness, mobility. We thus come across two antithetic poles: umberto eco who endeavours to deny castration (another type of disruption so to speak), by filling in the gap inherent in the tight network of multiple signs reflecting one another, and on the other hand mario luzi who starting from the radical disruption of the modern world and of today's individual, all this leads to the utopia of a new notion of wholeness: all the various significations of modernity torn by torment

Full textOur work traces an historical perspective of the genre of the conte through the presentation of lots of texts of the 19th century, and considers the characteristics which make the conte a particular literary genre, different from the nouvelle. Always keeping in mind that the conte and the nouvelle are almost inseparables in the 19th century, our dissertation aims to present the different kinds of contes existing in this century and, at the same time, to meditate on the idea of conte as a specific genre. Our dissertation is made up of three different parts, namely the Introduction, the General Part and the Conclusions. The introductive part retraces the iter of the short story from the Middle Ages up to the 17th century and also proposes some definitions of conte and nouvelle given by dictionaries of different periods. The General Part proposes an historical as well as literary perspective of the genre of the conte in its different aspects through the analysis of more than a hundred collections of contes of the 19th century. It also analyses the role of the conte in the reviews (ch. V) and in the mélanges (ch. VI) of that age. The Conclusions are entirely consecrated to the reflections on the idea of the conte considered as a specific literary genre, enouncing the theories proposed in the 19th century by Gœthe, Edgar Poe, Baudelaire and Marcel Schwob, and also proposing a definition of the conte in the 19th century through the three categories of Form, Subject and Message

Full textGiorgio Caproni (1912-1990) is now recognized as one of the greatest Italian poets of his time. As a parallel to his poetic work, he also devoted himself, as did a number of his contemporaries, to the translation of some of the most important figures of twentieth century French literature: Proust, Céline, Apollinaire, Char, to name but a few. Following some of the analyses of the philosopher Giorgio Agamben, we see how, with the aid of authors from another genre (prose) and language (French), Caproni’s practice of translation, at the crossroads of a literary and translatological reasoning, constitutes a laboratory for experimenting with his poetry to come. It is through the translation of such authors as the above (particularly during the nineteen sixties) that Caproni’s translational poetics is elaborated, characterized by the deconstruction of syntactic links. Punctuation, used as a rhythmic and melodic instrument, furrows the text and gives rise to a play of enunciation that one subsequently finds in his poetry. Indeed, the collection Congedo del viaggiatore cerimonioso (1965) marks the appearance of a character and the beginning of a new phase of his work. The series of characters who populate the second part of Giorgio Caproni’s work testifies to a strategy, formed through his translations, of the theatricalization of the poetic space. But this theatrical simulation is only one of the modes used by the poet to express his loss of confidence in the power of the word to represent reality. This assessment opens out onto the themes of the dissolution of the subject and the absence of God: themes which are to be understood not so much from the point of view of philosophy as from that of the musical language towards which this poetry strives and which founds its modernity

Full textThe nouvelle is a brief narrative form with an indeterminate origin. Literary history has deemed it both an ancestor of a medieval repertory (lai, fabliau, exemplum, etc. ) and a harbinger of the Renaissance (first French, then Italian). After a long association with Boccaccio; the nouvelle today still occupies an ambiguous space. Around 1462, the Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles hailed it as a French literary form, but it was not until the second half of the 16th century, with Marguerite de Navarre, that the nouvelle was recognized as a bona-fide literary genre. Albeit known by many names—arrêt, enseignement, joie, évangile or facétie—the nouvelle develops as a genre in the middle ages. The compilation of nouvelles serves as a vehicle which moves us from a literal meaning, or simply a “flow of information”, to a more complex literary sense. The compilation fosters a kind of polyphony, going beyond the simple classification of texts as either narrative or didactic, thereby acting as a matrix. It engenders the “living letter” through the fiction of orality. It creates itself as flesh in order to rehabilitate the poetic word. It replaces the “passing of time” in lament with the “pastime” of a ludic pact which engages the reader in an aesthetic of participation. A genre all about motion, the nouvelle marks the “transition” between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, which, for literature, has become a foundation

I deal with the main linguistic forms expressing time in the English language before summing up Genette's theory on story time and narrative time. These considerations are followed by the detailed analysis of three short stories. The second part focuses on the narrative level. We successively examine each of the six novels in order to expose the evolution of style and of themes. The last part builds on the conclusions of the second and encompasses the short stories. It gives a bird's-eye view of McGahern's specific vision of time by relating the experience of the characters to that of the author and of the reader

The purpose is to juxtapose two micocosms that have merged to sumbiotically create a true literay fusion and an entity with its own distinctive traits. We also want to contribute, in literary historians through time, about notions of alterity in Boisrobert’s play and novels. We have found, across several comparative studies about the crossover of Hispanic themes and motifs to the French literary seventeenth century scene in the last decaces, allusions to Bois Robert. Thesee, however, lack depth, and the discussions they generate are rather shallow and tend to evince lack of mastery of his works, misinformation, and misjudgement… since Tallemant des Réaux. This is an limitation that owes to the fact that Boisrobert’s works are especially hard to find for resarchers and simple readers. That is the reason to propose them and and indispensable critical work such as this one

The point is to show how the writers see and write the city - meaning Bangkok - and its development nowadays and in the past twenty years. This thesis is divided in two parts. Full textIn the Renaissance, short fiction is defined by fictional narratives inspired from reality and claiming to be truthful. These are often narratives staging different social groups and representing all human types. In my analysis of a number of collected sixteenth-century novellas, I noted that great emphasis was laid on social structures (couple, family, social group, location) that represent the basic framework of communal life. However, these works, which at first sight seem pregnant with ideological implications, often stage characters that, for various reasons and at different levels, are made to choose particular paths. Thus, all the debates and polemics raised in these narratives relate to two kinds of morality, one individual and the other communal. The objective of this study is therefore to look into the different representations, and determine the interference, of these two moralities in the novella genre. Scrutiny of the different social, religious, political and cultural codes enabled me to establish the existence of this interference and its impact on the fabric of literary texts. In depicting life in sixteenth-century France, the story-tellers developed a new way of viewing men in their relation to society and the world. As a result, they were able to invent a new morality, thus changing the very perception of the individual

Full textA new type of African Francophone theater has emerged since the 1990s, which announced a breaking point within the African literary landscape. This generation of contemporary writers from the African diaspora engages with notions of fragmentation, displacement, and instability that suggest a reconfiguration of chaos in Francophone African literary productionsince the Independences. The history of African literatures since 1960, when a large majorityof former African colonies became independent, is marked by the theme of chaos with significant differences. Indeed, between 1960 and 1970, writers of the « disenchantment »denounce social and political chaos in Africa following the emergence of new dictatorships inthe post-independence period, African theatrical aesthetics by the end of the 1970s andthrough the 1980s, on the contrary, work on an exit out of the African chaos from the perspective of revalorization, providing modern contextualizations for African myths andtraditions. Since the early 1990s a rupture is established within new African theater that creates a performative space of « chaos-monde », which manifests the hybrid reality of the African diaspora at local and global levels. By reading accross theatrical works by this generation that include Caya Makélé (Congo), Koffi Kwahulé (Ivory Coast), Marcel Zang(Cameroon), José Pliya (Benin), Kossi Efoui (Togo), and Dieudonné Niangouna (Congo), Ished light on the new techniques and aesthetics of an energetic chaos. In 1485, Antoine Vérard had a French version of the "Decameron" printed that was entitled "Livre de Cameron" and that completely distorted its original by erasing major parts of its framed narrative and adding "final moral stances" to the novellas. Heavily criticised since the 16th century for adulterating Boccacio's œuvre, and replaced by a new translation in 1545, this version was nevertheless published successfully and temporarily set up as "paragon" of the Renaissance novella. What is the forgotten "Decameron" that France edited and imitated in the first half of the 16th century about ? What kind of transformations did the French reviser impose on the canon of the novella proposed by the original "Decameron" ? Full textThough Porto Rican literature is generally ignored, and particularly in France, a lot of great authors deserve publicity. Here we introduce Jose Luis Gonzalez by translating into French twelve of his short stories. Those texts were selected because they illustrate the different aspects of the work of Jose Luis Gonzalez and, more generally, of the Porto Rican literature of the 20th century. Two groups of stories deal with the dual aspects of the Porto Rican way of life (both insular and in New York City) and give a good image of the complex problems of autonomy, cultural and linguistical dependence. The third group of stories deals with more universal matters. The second part of this work is a critical comment on the different difficulties met during the process of translating those texts into French. We stress the importance of the environment: geographical as well as political or cultural. We also deal with the specific question of the interaction between Spanish and English (in particular the black slang of Harlem). We try to describe how these alterations (Americanisms, Caribbean or Porto Rican dialectal forms) of the Castilian as well as the bias of the translator of the Spanish language lead to a particular reproduction by local and sociological deviations of French. We also evidence the mechanisms used to render the consistency of style of the author. The translation of these twelve texts should soon be published provided an agreement is reached between the publisher and the author
