Abstract:
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Economics from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
In a context of economic recession, where resource scarcity follows every manager, efficiency is the only way out. Health Care is no exception. Continuous budgetary cuts from central authorities led to increasing pressures in hospital managers to achieve efficient results. In light of being able to quantify efficiency, this work project has the aim of identifying the best of two frontier based analysis (Stochastic Frontier Analysis and Data Envelopment Analysis) by performing efficiency estimations for a single year using variables from the Portuguese reality, allowing the identification of inefficiency sources. Efficiency scores will be obtained to compare hospitals for efficiency ranks and several efficiency-seeking suggestions will be stated in the end. The scores obtained from the estimations show that some hospitals still have a rough path to endure if they are to achieve economic efficiency. From the analysis we can see that efficient hospitals vary for each model. (8 in SFA [hospitals with a score higher than 0.95] and 17 in DEA). Estimation outputs suggest that changes in hospital size or services provided should occur in order to achieve higher efficiency, which is in light with the presently taken health policies.

Abstract:
A novel polydimethylsiloxane/activated carbon (PDMS-ACB) is proposed as new polymeric phases for stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE). The PDMS-ACB was developed in lab using simple teflon\'s mold, demonstrating remarkable stability and resistance to organic solvents, over 150 extractions without any damage. SBSE bar contained 100 µL of polymeric coating, a diameter of 2.36 mm and a length of 2.2 cm. It was applied to the determination of pesticides (ametryn, atrazine, bifenthrin, carbofuran, metribuzine and tebuthiuron) having predominantly polar properties, applied in sugarcane crops. PDMS-ACB was employed in the determination of pesticides in sugarcane juice using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Experimental design was employed in the optimization step, a fractional factorial evaluated the main parameters involved in the extraction procedure. Afterwards, central composite design (CCD) was exploited to optimize the significant factors on the extraction. About 200 µL of ethyl acetate were employed as solvent in the liquid desorption (LD). The method presented limit of quantification (LOQ) from 0.5 to 40 µg L-1, recoveries varied 0.18 - 49.50% and precision intra-day 0.072 - 8.40%. Hence, the method was applied to the analysis of real sugarcane juice samples commercially available in São Carlos-SP.

The project New Faces is a series of portraits dealing with the theme of identity and its loss, human individuality and the phenomenon of ideal of beauty. Each of paintings depict different views on the same face, base on personal confessions of portrayed and his friends. Thus we can observe confrontation of the "subjective" and the "objective", where this supposed "objectivity" acquire the relative value in the context of other pictures. The project points to the problem of self-perception and it explores how human perception distorts the reality, especially if more factors (than just a visual image of reality) affects the person.

Abstract:
The development of different kinds of bars for stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) was described in this work. This technique has been applied for the extraction of organic compounds from aqueous matrices due to their sorption on the stir bar. Stir bars are composed of a magneto inserted into a glass tube and coated with a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer. SBSE presents many advantages over the conventional extraction techniques such as, solventless sample preparation, simple analytical instrumentation, reuse of stir bars and mainly the higher volume of coating when compared to solid phase microextraction. The bars have been developed with more selective phases, once the unique commercially available bar presents the disadvantage of being coated solely with PDMS polymer. The home-made stir bars were prepared using PDMS modified with different materials, often used in gas chromatography columns. The goal of this modification was to increase coating polarity and to improve efficiency and selectivity of the extraction for polar compounds. The developed bars were applied to the analysis of anticonvulsivant and antidepressant in human plasma and anthelmintic in bovine plasma. In all applications, the home-made bars showed better selectivity when compared to commercial bars. An interface for coupling SBSE to HPLC developed at Laboratory of Chromatography was also evaluated for antidepressant analysis in human plasma. This coupling presented satisfactory results, being desorption more efficient when high temperatures was used. Temperature increases affinity between analytes and desorption solvent.

The single properties presented by nanostructured materials is due to a scale effect and have been attracted much attention in recent years. Such characteristics make these materials suitable for applications in nanoelectronics, nanofiltration, tissue engineering and so on. These issues coupled with the miniaturization of the devices, have generated a great demand for materials with improved characteristics, development of new production techniques and improvement of the existing ones. All such things are associated with lower production costs and higher productivity. In this work is presented a study focused on the use of the "Solution Blow-spinning" technique (SBS) in the production of superconducting nano and microwires of the ceramic systems (TR)BCO and BSCCO. This new technique has payed attention due to its higher production rate, low cost and easy implementation when compared to other consolidated techniques. First, pure PVP fibers were produced to obtain information related to the production variables such as: injection rate, air pressure, working distance and choice of the internal needle diameter. Then, the production of nano/microwires of YBa2Cu3O7- δ (YBCO), obtained by SBS, revealed details regarding the productivity, reproducibility and morphological characteristics of the ceramic wires. Consequently, the best synthesis conditions were used to obtain the GdBa2Cu3O7- δ (GdBCO) and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (BSCCO) superconducting nanowires. Finally, SEM analysis confirmed the production of nanoscale YBCO with average diameter of 359 nm and, for GdBCO and BSCCO, of 531 nm and 635 nm, respectively. The formation of the desired phases of the superconducting ceramic was confirmed by XRD analyzes. AC and DC magnetic measurements showed the normal/superconducting phase transition with Tc ~ 92 K for YBCO, Tc ~ 93 K for GdBCO and Tc ~ 80 K for BSCCO.

Abstract:
This work presents the development of three distinct control systems to rear electric traction control on conventional touring vehicles converted on 4WD (four-wheel drive) hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), focusing on the design of a EDS (Electronic Differential System). Main HEV architectures are presented. The EDS controls the rear wheels angular speeds as the driver inputs steering and acceleration commands, considering both dynamic and kinematic models of the vehicle and so the actuators on the calculus of the desired rear angular speeds. One modied PID controller, one AI (Articial Intelligence) based controller and one robust optimal H \'infinite\' controller are designed and outlined. A new EDS architecture is proposed and presented, aimming the use of robust controllers to the EDS problem, comparing the use of the H \'infinite\' optimal controller to conventional EDS architectures. The design of a mini-HEV, the HELVIS (Hybrid ELectric Vehicle In low Scale) platform is also presented. The implementation of a parametric vehicular simulator, the HELVIS-SIM, is discussed. The EDS, which represents the controllers and the proposed architecture, is evaluated on the HELVIS platform and on the HELVIS-SIM. Simulated results are rst run in the HELVIS-SIM. Experimental results of the EDS tests are presented exclusively considering the evaluation on a bench test, without any contact of the platform with the pavement.

Abstract:
As a consulting project, we were proposed to develop a neural network (NN) to predict mortgage states in one year, based on the paper ‘Deep Learning for Mortgage Risk’ by Justin A. Sirignano, Apaar Sadhwani, Kay Giesecke (2018). We developed a neural network model with the aim of being able to capture the relationships between the different variables, with respect to each other and to the response variable (the loan status in 12 months), better than traditional classification methods, such as logistic regressions, which constitute the benchmark set. Data was provided by Moody’s, relating borrower, property and loan/financing characteristics for several mortgages over several periods in time (over 350 thousand mortgages). The purpose of our model is to predict the probabilities to transition to different states at a certain point in time. The best results were obtained with a 10 layer, 500 nodes per layer network. The model can identify a large portion of defaults. At the cost, however, of a general overestimation of the default rate over the years. The capability of identifying loans that will be in arrears is also acceptable, with, again, an overestimation of the verified rate. Variables relating to borrower characteristics and history as well as financing are found to be the most significant.

Abstract:
In the past couple of years, universities and colleges have started introducing social entrepreneurship education and social enterprise initiatives within their curricula. Research has identified social entrepreneurship education as a different kind of education that is best delivered with experience and practice. Despite the theoretical nature of higher education, universities and colleges are capable of equipping and training students with the skills to start or join a social venture, however, with the transformation of their current approaches. While practice-based training in the form of case studies and writing business plans has proven beneficial, especially in the field of social entrepreneurship, this paper aims to bring into light the existing body of knowledge on the importance of experiential learning and educational outsourcing. Although done within the formal walls of universities and colleges, with the help of social entrepreneurs and social enterprises, the classroom can be altered to represent the real world provoking experience that can impact attitudes and intentions. Based on the review of the literature on social entrepreneurship and social ventures, this data is analyzed to set later the ground for a proposal of a potential partnership between Nova School of Business and Economics and Dialog Social Enterprise.

Católica Lisbon is a leading Portuguese business schools that managed to establish itself with-in the Top25 of European business schools. During the next decade Católica Lisbon aims to further grow and improve the reputation of its Master of Science programs. The big challenge for the Portuguese business school thereby is to attract a greater number of diverse and high quality international students in a strong com-petitive environment. In order to evaluate if the current marketing and positioning strategy is adequate to achieve this mission, it is crucial for Católica Lisbon to understand international students and their decision patterns to choose a business school. This dissertation aims to analyze which drivers influence a student´s choice and if internation-al business students differ in how much they value hedonic and utilitarian dimensions in their decision. The literature review of this thesis gives an overview about hedonic and utilitarian decision making and introduces findings of previous researches in the area of higher educa-tion marketing. The case study describes the above stated challenge of Católica Lisbon in the context of its history and the developments in the European higher education market. Findings of a market research among international business students reveal that there are segments of utilitarian and hedonic-utilitarian driven students. These segments differ signifi-cantly in the importance they attribute to different factors in their choice and how likely they would choose a business school with Católica’s features.

Abstract:
This work aims the synthesis, development, optimization and characterization of new polymeric phases based on polyurethanes foams (PU) for application in sorptive extraction techniques. In a first step, we performed the optimization of the PU formulation, taking into account its best performance in stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), including the variation of the silicone oil and water contents and the addition of different polyols. The optimized formulation (P20) was subsequently characterized in order to assess its structure, morphology, stability and thermal, mechanic and chemical resistance, using spectroscopic, microscopic and thermogravimetric techniques, among others. The geometric configuration of P20 was also optimized, as well as the conditioning and regeneration procedures, in order to assure the reuse of the bars. From an analytical point of view, SBSE(P20) was combined with chromatographic techniques for the analysis of model compounds (triazinic herbicides, triazinic metabolites and steroid sexual hormones) in liquid phase, which are considered prioritary in the aquatic environment. In this context, assays were performed in spiked water samples, under instrumental and experimental optimized conditions, with a good performance, convenient efficiency and reproducibility, suitable linearity, good selectivity and sensitivity, as well as acceptable recoveries. The application of the optimized methodologies to environmental water samples has shown good performance. The comparison of SBSE(P20) with the commercial stir bars with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for SBSE proved that the former has higher analytical efficiency, as well as a high coverage to monitor target compounds in a wide range of polarities. The optimized P20 formulation was also applied in the gas phase, in the analysis of volatile model compounds (coffee aroma) in the headspace, HSSE(P20). This study has shown that this new polymeric phase evidences the wide range and the good performance obtained in liquid phase, comparatively to other sorptive extraction techniques. From the data obtained, we can conclude that it was possible to achieve the previously defined goals, namely, the synthesis of a new polymeric phase for SBSE, proving the great extractive ability of the PUs as alternative polymeric phases for implementation in sorptive extraction techniques.

Abstract:
The topic of the work is an impact of digital self-tracking technologies such as wearable fitness trackers and smartphone self-tracking applications on an individual. I used the methodology of semi-structured interviews, conducted with students engaged in self-tracking and comparative discourse analysis, when data received from the interviews were compared with healthy lifestyle discourse, partly manifested in the Czech internet media portals. The research question of "How self-trackers perceive the impact of the technology of self-tracking on their physical activities and lifestyle, respectively differentiated among themselves in terms of impact and usage of self-tracking technology, and to what extent they perceive it similarly to the way self- tracking is presented in Czech internet media portals?" was answered in the following way: the participants were categorized as 'engaged' and 'sportspeople' users, and their relation to discourse was not complete, although they were using the conceptualization of a healthy lifestyle proposed by media. In addition, the work proposes a theoretical overview of the issue of self-tracking and discusses the possibilities for future research.

The present work was done as a research to the Master Degree in Documental Sciences and is based on the study of the Support Service for School Libraries (SABE) of the Municipal Libraries of Lisbon district. The fieldwork took place between 15 May and 30 September 2011, aiming to trace the pathway and the activities developed by the Municipal Libraries of Lisbon district and also to characterize their current situation and make recommendations on the forms and ways of intervention and support from the Municipal Councils to school libraries. In this study the SABE of Loures City Council was not analyzed because of a matter of professional ethics as I am not only the “Master Degree Student” but also the superior technical responsible for it. However this SABE is presented in terms of policy action in a specific chapter without denying a confrontation of its objectives and implementation guidelines in comparison with its similars in the research. As a method of data collection was used the inquiry by questionnaire combining the quantitative and qualitative methods for the analysis of the collected data. This quantitative and qualitative analysis association helps to a better understanding of the case study. With the results obtained it is intended to obtain a systematized knowledge of the various parameters of the SABE of the Municipal Councils of Lisbon district, reflecting their historical route.
