Bennetts, Alison Chantal. "Experimental investigations of paranoia : a literature review and novel research." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2017. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/417890/.

Abstract:
Paranoid experience across the population has been of increasing interest to psychological researchers in recent years. Paranoia is no longer considered a purely psychiatric phenomenon, with numerous studies demonstrating delusional ideation in non-clinical populations. Theoretical models implicate emotions and beliefs as contributory factors in the most severe form of paranoia; persecutory delusions. Chapter one investigates the contribution of experimental studies investigating anxiety and paranoia to the understanding of the theoretical models of paranoid experience. Using a systematic search strategy and narrative synthesis, the review found extensive variance in design and methodology. Whilst there is some evidence of manipulations impacting paranoia and anxiety, the literature is limited by small samples, lack of replication and weak quality ratings. Further sufficiently powered replication studies and employment of mediational and covariate analyses are required to understand the causal relationships between theoretically relevant variables. Chapter two presents an experimental investigation into the effect of mental imagery on variables relevant to models of paranoid experience. Large, significant effect sizes were found, although some analyses were underpowered. These results offer tentative support for the impact of mental imagery on factors theorised to be relevant to the experience of paranoid ideation. Theoretical, research and clinical implications are discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
Infamous for “Mad hatter syndrome” and “Minamata disease”, mercury (Hg) is ranked high on the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's priority list of hazardous substances for its potent neurologic, renal, and developmental toxicities. Most typical exposures are via contaminated water and food. Although regulations and advisories are exercised at various levels, Hg pollution from both natural and anthropogenic sources has remained a major public health and safety concern. Rapid detection of solvated aqueous Hg2+ ions at low levels is critical for immediate response and protection of those who are vulnerable (young children, pregnant and breast-feeding women) to acute and chronic exposures to Hg2+. Various types of sensors capable of detecting Hg in water have been developed. In particular, the novel use of engineered carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has garnered attention due to their specificity and sensitivity towards Hg2+ detection in solution. In this focused review, we describe the sensitivity, selectivity and mechanisms of Hg2+ ion sensing at trace levels by employing CNT-based various sensor designs, and appraise the open literature on the currently applied and “proof-of-concept” methods. Five different types of CNT-based sensor systems are described: potentiometric, DNA-based fluorescence, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), colorimetric, and stripping voltammetric assays. In addition, the recognized merits and shortcomings for each type of electrochemical sensors are discussed. The knowledge from this succinct review shall guide the development of the next generation CNT-based biochemical sensors for rapid Hg2+ detection in the environment, which is a significant first step towards human health risk analysis of this legacy toxicant.

Abstract:
Physical activities like walking have proven health benefits. People are adopting fitness trackers to track physical activity, but they often stop using them after a relatively short time. Many apps and games exist in the app markets that use gamification to tackle this problem of motivation. In this thesis, we examined these existing gamified fitness tracker apps from app markets and looked at the usage of different game elements within these apps. We conducted a systematic review of existing fitness Tracker Apps from Google Play Store and Apple App Store and used a mixed-method approach to identify apps, categorize them by different game elements used and found gaps in the design space using basic statistics, group clustering algorithms, and network analysis using NodeXL. We also developed a mobile game that combines step tracker data, a compelling narrative, and a strategic resource management mechanic with social cooperative-collaborative gameplay to encourage users to keep using fitness trackers and exercise more. It utilizes game elements and mechanics that haven't been explored by previous research or games as validated by our results from the systematic review of gamified fitness tracker apps.

Full text
Abstract:
KIF1A is a molecular motor for membrane-bound cargo important to the development and survival of sensory neurons. KIF1A dysfunction has been associated with several Mendelian disorders with a spectrum of overlapping phenotypes, ranging from spastic paraplegia to intellectual disability. We present a novel pathogenic in-frame deletion in the KIF1A molecular motor domain inherited by two affected siblings from an unaffected mother with apparent germline mosaicism. We identified eight additional cases with heterozygous, pathogenic KIF1A variants ascertained from a local data lake. Our data provide evidence for the expansion of KIF1A-associated phenotypes to include hip subluxation and dystonia as well as phenotypes observed in only a single case: gelastic cataplexy, coxa valga, and double collecting system. We review the literature and suggest that KIF1A dysfunction is better understood as a single neuromuscular disorder with variable involvement of other organ systems than a set of discrete disorders converging at a single locus.<br>National Institutes of Health<br>Revisión por pares

O'Connell, Neil Edward. "Non-invasive brain stimulation as a novel approach to the treatment of chronic non-specific low back pain." Thesis, Brunel University, 2012. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/7237.

Full text
Abstract:
Chronic non-specific low back pain (CNSLBP) is a widespread but poorly understood condition that places a substantial burden on the sufferer, health services and the wider economy. Existing approaches to management do not demonstrate impressive levels of effectiveness. There is growing evidence that CNSLBP is associated with significant alterations in central nervous system (CNS) structure and function, suggesting a possible role for the brain in the aetiology of the condition, and presenting a case for novel therapies which aim to treat CNSLBP by affecting brain function. One such potential therapeutic approach is non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS). Following a literature review discussing the epidemiology and management of low back pain, the evidence for altered CNS function and the potential role of brain stimulation in CNSLBP and chronic pain generally this thesis includes 3 original scientific studies: (i) A Cochrane systematic review of the effectiveness of NIBS techniques for the treatment of chronic pain; (ii) A randomised double-blind exploratory study of transcranial direct current stimulation of the motor cortex in the treatment of CNSLBP; (iii) Is blinding to the stimulation condition maintained in trials comparing 2mA tDCS with sham stimulation? A randomised cross-over study. Results: There is limited existing evidence that some forms of NIBS may have a beneficial effect on chronic pain, though caution is warranted. Exploratory data from study 2 is not suggestive that tDCS to the motor cortex is effective for treating CNSLBP. Commonly used sham controls in trials of tDCS do not ensure adequate blinding, and so introduce a potential source of bias to the existing evidence base. Conclusion: Further research is required to establish the value of NIBS as a treatment for chronic pain and CNSLBP. Future research in tDCS will need to develop and employ fully validated sham controls to ensure adequate blinding. NIBS cannot currently be recommended for the treatment of CNSLBP.

Pham, Minh H. "Signal Detection of Adverse Drug Reaction using the Adverse Event Reporting System: Literature Review and Novel Methods." Scholar Commons, 2018. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7218.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the objectives of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is to protect the public health through post-marketing drug safety surveillance, also known as Pharmacovigilance. An inexpensive and efficient method to inspect post-marketing drug safety is to use data mining algorithms on electronic health records to discover associations between drugs and adverse events. The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, we review the methods and algorithms proposed in the literature for identifying association drug interactions to an adverse event and discuss their advantages and drawbacks. Second, we attempt to adapt some novel methods that have been used in comparable problems such as the genome-wide association studies and the market-basket problems. Most of the common methods in the drug-adverse event problem have univariate structure and thus are vulnerable to give false positive when certain drugs are usually co-prescribed. Therefore, we will study applicability of multivariate methods in the literature such as Logistic Regression and Regression-adjusted Gamma-Poisson Shrinkage Model for the association studies. We also adopted Random Forest and Monte Carlo Logic Regression from the genome-wide association study to our problem because of their ability to detect inherent interactions. We have built a computer program for the Regression-adjusted Gamma Poisson Shrinkage model, which was proposed by DuMouchel in 2013 but has not been made available in any public software package. A comparison study between popular methods and the proposed new methods is presented in this study.

Roberts, Tony, and Kevin Hernandez. Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition: A Literature Review and Proposed Conceptual Framework. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2021.018.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper begins by locating the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition project (GODAN) in the context of wider debates in the open data movement by first reviewing the literature on open data and open data for agriculture and nutrition (ODAN). The review identifies a number of important gaps and limitations in the existing literature. There has been no independent evaluation of who most benefits or who is being left behind regarding ODAN. There has been no independent evaluation of gender or diversity in ODAN or of the development outcomes or impacts of ODAN. The existing research on ODAN is over-reliant on key open data organisations and open data insiders who produce most of the research. This creates bias in the data and analysis. The authors recommend that these gaps are addressed in future research. The paper contributes a novel conceptual ‘SCOTA’ framework for analysing the barriers to and drivers of open data adoption, which could be readily applied in other domains. Using this framework to review the existing literature highlights the fact that ODAN research and practice has been predominantly supply-side focused on the production of open data. The authors argue that if open data is to ‘leave no one behind’, greater attention now needs to be paid to understanding the demand-side of the equation and the role of intermediaries. The paper argues that there is a compelling need to improve the participation of women, people living with disabilities, and other marginalised groups in all aspects of open data for agriculture and nutrition. The authors see a need for further research and action to enhance the capabilities of marginalised people to make effective use of open data. The paper concludes with the recommendation that an independent strategic review of open data in agriculture and nutrition is overdue. Such a review should encompass the structural factors shaping the process of ODAN; include a focus on the intermediary and demand-side processes; and identify who benefits and who is being left behind.

Abstract:
Ensiferan insects (crickets, katydids, grigs and allies) are well known for rubbing parts of their cuticle together to produce sound: a process called stridulation. In this article Swedish entomologist Kjell Ander describes a novel (at the time) stridulatory apparatus in the great grig, Cyphoderris monstrosa (Prophalangopsidae), a relict ensiferan found in the mountainous regions of western North America. Ander used preserved specimens to predict the sound-producing function of a pair of abdominal file-scraper apparatuses, although he was never able to directly test his proposed mechanism nor did he speculate as to the adaptive significance of the structures. The article concludes with a review of the systematic placement of various higher level taxa within the order Orthoptera, of which Ensifera is one suborder.
