Abstract:
This chapter relates the story of the development of recent ideas relating to ecosystems that are greatly modified by environmental and biological changes. Originally such ecosystems were given attention simply because they were an understudied set of systems that could teach us about how ecological communities assemble and reassemble. However, as the widespread prevalence of such “novel ecosystems” became obvious, some data suggested they could deliver important ecosystem functions. This led to a debate regarding the values, management, and restoration of altered ecosystems. The original papers had a hard time in the review process, and debate has, at times, been rancorous. However, many practitioners and ecologists now find the concept of novel ecosystems useful, and the possibility of their conservation value worth investigating.

Abstract:
Despite remarkable progress in our understanding of the neurobiological bases of drug abuse, no novel pharmacotherapies have recently been approved to treat substance use disorders (SUDs). Thus, while reformulations of established treatments have either been approved or are currently in late stage development (e.g., sustained release formulations of naltrexone (Vivitrol®) and buprenorphine), the development of medications to treat SUDs has lagged well behind other areas of psychiatry. In this chapter, we review some of the factors that have contributed to this dearth of innovative pharmacotherapies. We also review evidence that supports clinical testing of late stage molecules (developed for other indications) acting at promising targets, as well as novel biological approaches to the treatment of SUDs.

Abstract:
The advent of new-generation antipsychotic drugs has broadened the options for the pharmacological treatment of schizophrenia. However, there are still medical needs not met by current antipsychotic treatment, particularly for patients with negative symptoms and cognitive impairments, and for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. A growing body of research has identified new molecular mechanisms and novel pharmacological targets for treating schizophrenia beyond just dopamine D2 antagonism. This chapter provides a review of compounds in development and emerging non-pharmacological interventions for schizophrenia, and also considers approaches towards personalized and precision medicine for the disorder.

Abstract:
While infections have always played an important role in the history of mankind, advances in science and technology as well as rapid globalization have resulted in an unprecedented wave of new and old infections thrust into the limelight. The recent pandemic of H1N1 influenza virus infection demonstrates the recurrent theme of emerging and reemerging pathogens that continue to impact public health and patient care areas. Drug resistance among various organisms (not limited to bacteria) has unfortunately become the expectation and, not infrequently, we have been left with few or no efficacious treatment options, an experience not witnessed in more than 7 decades. Human immunodeficiency virus infection continues to challenge our abilities to provide the desired level of care in most areas of the world. Novel syndromes of infection continue to be defined as newer forms of immunosuppression and the development of unique medical devices become standard practice in all areas of medicine and surgery. For trainees and practitioners in the field of infectious diseases today, these factors mandate intense study to establish an expertise in the field that is required to provide best practices now and beyond. This board review will be pivotal in that education. This book is designed and intended primarily for infectious diseases trainees and practitioners preparing for the infectious disease subspecialty examination of the American Board of Internal Medicine. We believe that this book will also be useful to infectious diseases practitioners as well as general internists and other clinicians who desire a comprehensive but practical overview of contemporary infectious diseases topics.

Abstract:
This chapter presents the different theoretical texts that informed our study and interpretation of empirical data. We review selected health services and social science literature to provide insights on the mobilization of knowledge in the health care sector, with specific attention to practice-based examples. We include a critical reading of perspectives on evidence-based management (EBMgt) which takes its lead from evidence-based medicine (EBM). Drawing on insights from the strategic management literature, and the Resource-Based View (RBV), we discuss how knowledge is understood as a valuable asset, and explore some implications for public services and health care settings. We conclude by contributing a novel perspective on the political economy of public management knowledge production—a macro-level analysis that seeks to explore how interactions at the political, economic, and policy levels shape the institutional context for management knowledge use in the public sector.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the novel's assimilation into British culture between 1750 and 1820. During this period, the vast majority of theories and histories of the novel were introduced not through formal critical studies like John Dunlop's The History of Fiction: Being a Critical Account of the Most Celebrated Prose Works of Fiction, from the earliest Greek Romances to the Novels of the Present Age (1814), but rather through an array of other publications that helped constitute print culture in these years. Of these other acts of publishing, the chapter focuses on the activities of eighteenth-century literary reviews and anthologies, particularly on large reprinted collections of novels published after 1774.

Abstract:
This essay examines the place of fiction in eighteenth-century reviewing and the place of reviewing in eighteenth-century fiction. While reviewers might express scorn for many of the novels they reviewed and for their readers, generally assumed to be female, they also paid substantial attention to fiction. Sales of fiction might be substantially unaffected by reviews, but the reviewers’ comments were still seen as influential. Despite all the insults, complaints, and exaggerations, their judgements helped to solidify the position of fiction in the literary world. They also provide for us now a valuable resource for the history of the novel, including insight into the vagaries of literary reputation.

Abstract:
This essay considers the way in which various types of fiction were projected at their original readers, primarily through the title pages, but also through reviews and circulating-library catalogues. Increasing use was made of ‘Novel’, ‘Romance’, and ‘Tale’ as main descriptors, with Novel gradually gaining prominence in the later eighteenth century, Romance enjoying a moment of popularity round the turn of the century, and Tale or Tales achieving ascendancy by the 1820s. Additional components in titles, such as the Sentimental, Gothic, and Historical, helped communicate different subgeneric types of fiction. Eventually, a three-tiered system stretched from ‘common’ circulating fiction to novels of reputation, the latter signalled by the use of the larger octavo format and through the development of distinct author identities (even when published anonymously). The Magnum Opus collected edition of Scott’s novels made him a classic in his time, finally establishing the novel as a fully established genre.

Caffin, Elizabeth. Aotearoa/New Zealand. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199679775.003.0006.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the history of publishing, particularly of the English-language novel, in Aotearoa/New Zealand since 1950. It begins with a review of the local book scene during the period 1950–1965, when aspiring novelists faced many publication difficulties, such as the dominance of the local fiction market by British publishers and the power of publishers to fix and determine retail prices and bookseller discounts. It then turns to the years 1965–1980, when serious literary novels began to attract attention, and the 1980s, when New Zealand fiction gained overseas recognition after the 1984 novel the bone people by Keri Hulme won the 1985 Booker Prize. The chapter also examines important developments in the 1990s, such as the emergence of small independent publishers like Tandem Press and the proliferation of book festivals, and since 2000, including the expansion of internet bookselling and the rise in popularity of e-books.

Abstract:
This chapter examines foreign novels, which greatly overshadowed the English novel. The prevalence of imitations and translations of foreign novels had been a matter of significant critical concern throughout the first half of the eighteenth century and contemptuously identified by many a censorious reviewer as a corrupting influence on both the morals and letters of the nation. By the middle of the century, however, there was a strong sense that the English novel had come of age; and as British novelists progressively consolidated their position both at home and abroad, readers became decreasingly dependent on foreign fiction. Nonetheless, non-native fiction remained a convenient focus for multiple anxieties relating to the genre of the novel and its commercialization. For while the overall picture for 1750–1820 as regards imported imaginative literature was one of general decline, many foreign novelists continued to compete successfully for the attention of the British public.

This chapter focuses on John Brunner's works from 1967 to 1975. These include Quicksand (1967), which garnered testy and argumentative reviews; Zanzibar (1968), which went on to garner Nebula and Hugo nominations; The Sheep Look Up (1972), his darkest novel set in the United States as it enters its “third century” as a nation; and The Shockwave Rider (1975), which Brunner described as convenient “shorthand” for dealing with the vicissitudes of the human mind. Brunner also contributed five columns on assorted topics to Science Fiction Review between December 1969 and March 1971. By the mid-1970s, Brunner largely dropped out of view and stopped writing science fiction.
