Full text
Abstract:
High resolution scanning Hall probe microscopy and Hall magnetometry have been used to investigate the magnetic properties of single crystal samples of Co-doped 8r-122 and Ba-122 iron- based superconductors and high quality MgB2 thin films. We have made a quantitative analysis of the evolution of the profiles of well-isolated vortices as a function of temperature, and used a fitting procedure to extract the temperature-dependent magnetic field penetration depth, ACT). This, in turn, allowed us to infer the temperature-dependent superfluid density which has been compared with a-model results fo

Abstract:
This work presents and discusses the recent advances in high temperature superconductors. It focuses on how both the superconducting fullerides and iron selenides have contributed to the state-of-the-art of high temperature superconductors. The discovery of the relationship between the critical temperature and the proximity of the Cs3C60 material to the Mott metal-insulator transition has clearly demonstrated unconventional superconductivity in fullerides. However, the best samples of Cs3C60 were synthesised in purities of ~80 % which complicates the analysis of the physical properties of this

The present thesis is devoted to the investigation of novel superconductors by phase-sensitive terahertz transmission and infrared to ultraviolet spectroscopy. In particular, a nominally undoped Pr2CuO4 superconducting thin film, an FeTe0.5Se0.5 thin film, and a LiFeAs single crystal have been investigated. The emphasis is on the low-frequency part of the optical spectrum (i.e., the terahertz and infrared spectrum), as the goal of the study was to shed light on the size and symmetry of the superconducting gaps and also to determine the temperature dependences as well as the absolute values of

Abstract:
Nuclear magnetic resonance was crucial in the vindication of the theory of supercon-ductivity in 1957, it still continues to provide vital information today in the ongoing challenge that is the determination of the mechanism for type-II superconductors. This forms the basis of this piece of work, which details the preparation, charac-terisation and cryogenic measurements of two new superconductors based on the cage like fullerides. In light of recent synthetic developments it has now become possible to encapsulate small molecules inside the fullerene cage, which may then be doped with alkali m

Despite over 100 years of scientific research, a full understanding of superconductivity remains elusive. While it is known that the electron-phonon interaction is responsible for the formation of Cooper pairs in conventional superconductors, many superconductors exhibit behaviour suggestive of more exotic pairing mechanisms. In this thesis, two novel superconducting materials are considered, monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide, MoS2, and iron-based superconductor, LaFeAsO1−xFx. The aim of this thesis was to study quantum phenomena and excitation modes in type-I superconductors and magnetic vortices. The intermediate state in type-I superconductors is characterized by the gradual penetration of magnetic flux and the coexistence of normal and superconducting domains. This thermodynamic phase shows a magnetic irreversibility of topological origin, even in the case of defect-free samples. This irreversibility has been explored in disk-shaped samples made of lead (the prototype of a type-I superconductor) using a magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the disk plan
