Full textThe purpose of this work is to study the composition of the Chekhov\'s novel \"A Dreary Story\". The main character of this novel is unique for Chekhov since he is a World known scientist. Being in doubt for the first time about the meaning of his life he is trying to resolve this painful problem with the help of logical reflections in his diary - but fails. The novel has the form of a narrative of the main character. In Chekhovs\' writings the opinion of the character never reflect the opinion of the author. Therefore, to understand the Chekhov point of view in a novel that does not contain single word directly from the author, one has to be attentive to special signs in the subtext. We analyze these signs, that are main stylistic elements of the composition such as the plot, the narrative in the present and in recollections, the lexis, the themes of death, of nature, of animals, musics, as well as the details, symbols, the rhythm, the characters and the chronotop. We show that all these factors interact and clarify each other to compose the subtext of the novel. They conspire to underline the main idea of the author to show the psychology a man when his life is coming to an end and then he is concerned with the meaning of his particular finite life at the background of an infinite historic process. Besides, we consider the history of creation of \"A Dreary Story\" by looking at the author\'s correspondence and analyzing the critics dedicated to the novel.

Obras do Diabinho da Mão Furada is a controversial text, because it seems that, under a catholic and doctrinal shape, it transmits a message against that same doctrine and against its practices. The story was written in Portugal, in the beginning of the XVIIIth century, but it was published in Brazil in 1861-1862. Its authorship is imputed to Antonio José da Silva (1705-1739), an author known by his puppet plays, which he used to satirize the institutions, the moral and the social values of his age. Antonio José, better known as The Jew, was arrested and tortured in 1726, because of jewish practices. After that, he began to write and perform his plays, as a disguised form of agression and resistence to the Inquisition, and done it until his last imprisonment and death (1739). The motion of this present work is an investigation of the disguised message of the story Obras do Diabinho da Mão Furada, in order to decode the assaults against the Inquisition - assaults textually disguised beneath an eulogy of the catholic doctrine.

Full textThe thesis that we defend is focused on the importance of the illustration, considered as a semiotic-discursive category, within the literary collections of short novel, those who had triumphed in Spain at the beginning of the twentieth century. In the first five chapters, we propose some significant aspects regarding the world of the illustrated image: an approach to the historic course of illustration, to its consideration as one form of mass media, and to its connection with the classic artistic disciplines such as painting and literature. Moreover, we carry out a general analysis of the cultural realm and market in which the different varieties of short novel collections reach their peak. Chapter VI is devoted to a semiotic study that is focused on the seven greatest short novel collections: The Weekly Tale, The Contemporaries, The Short Novel, The Popular Story Book, The Weekly Novel, Today's Novel and The Worldly Novel.

Full textThe present doctoral thesis has analysed at lenght four novels from the 17Th century whose main character is a «pícara»: La pícara Justina de López de Úbeda y/o Baltasar Navarrete, published in 1605; La hija de Celestina de Salas Barbadillo (1612); La niña de los embustes, Teresa de Manzanares (1632) and La Garduña de Sevilla y anzuelo de las bolsas (1642), both by Castillo Solórzano. Our work has as its starting point a summary of the most respected critical approaches to the concept of the «picaresque novel». Next we will present the most respected critical approaches to the novels referred to above, which have contributed to identifying the elements which make up these narrations and the innovations which they contribute to the picaresque genre. The analysis of La pícara Justina takes up the chapter 2. There we contribute significant data concerning the new theory about the authorship of the work, pointing to the dominican monk, Baltasar Navarrete. We will discussing the strong festive component and the buffoon-like language of the work and its resulting satire of the ends and structure of the Guzmán. We will enumerate the real life characters satirized, and ridicule suffered by some monuments of León. We close the chapter with the study the picaresque components and a physical and moral portrait of Justina. Chapter 3 focuses on the novel by Salas Barbadillo, La hija de Celestina. We will study the hybrid nature of the novelette witch brings together a skillfully interwoven three stranded discourse. Also we will examine the moral vision of the author, the portrait of the protagonist and we will mention traces which other texts have left in the novel. Chapter 4 is made up of the study of the two «pícaras» created by Castillo Solórzano: Teresa de Manzanares y La Garduña de Sevilla. We will deal with aspects such as the miscellaneous structure which incorporates diverse narrative units, the treatment of scorn and other main themes, the underlying ideology of the novels and the character of Teresa y Rufina. We will close the study with «Conclusions» and «Bibliography».

The aim of this thesis is to judge the role of nonverbal elements in an especial literary context, starting from the apparent paradox that the text is composed of words, which nevertheless have to account for nonverbal facts whose significance is transposed into all kinds of sensory experiences. It examines the participation of nonverbal elements in the construction of a narrative that aspires to a maximum degree of mimesis, to the closest approximation towards the material phenomenon, by means of reproducing with verisimilitude both the communicative interactions of the characters and their contexts. This sense of veracity inspires in the reader's consciousness or imagination an implicit social critique. Linguistic and literary methodologies are combined to examine the similarities and divergences in the use of such resources by Émile Zola and Benito Pérez Galdós, heirs of different artistic traditions, but who share the same conception of the novel.

Full textOur thesis intends to fulfill the lack of accurate and exhaustive studies, from a multidisciplinary and critical perspective, about the reception of Hispano-American Literature in Spain during the second third of the twentieth century. This period being a turbulent and unsteady time – with the setback caused by the recent loss of their last overseas possessions –, it seems necessary to analyze how the Spanish Intelligentsia attended the narratives of its ancient colonies, based on the premise of the intimate connection between literature, nation and power. During this time period, a patent interest for Hispano-America existed in Spain, as well as a desire to strengthen transatlantic relations. This concern was also expanded to its narrative, as proven by the edition of Hispano-American novels and the existence of critical works, literary sections and reviews about them. However, this attention was debatable and paradoxical since on the one hand, the Intelligentsia admitted an appreciable ignorance of Hispano-American Literature but, on the other, intellectuals were constantly defining it, and therefore categorizing it, within a series of features and topics, such as the importance of Nature, the Hispanic bond, hybridism and continental unity. They were recognized in and applied to the authors and novels known in the Peninsula, which constituted a relatively reduced corpus considering the extensive American production. Additionally, these ideas were also defended from overseas as American traits, but in Spain they acquired a reductionist, and in some way determinist, nature. In fact, the main interpretation of the Hispano-American narratives performed by the Spanish Intelligentsia from 1927 to 1958 appeared intimately connected to the image of Hispano-America itself, as well as to the intercontinental relations and, more interestingly, to the Hispano-Americanist discourse. This reception remained quite constant and uniform despite the breakdowns and socio-political changes of the period at study because it responded to the importance of Hispano-Americanism and the persistence of its ideological background, instead of being produced by an organised will or driven proposal. That perception contributed to spread a particular image of Hispano-America, as well as of Spain, considered as its mother, sister, guide, interlocutor or mentor; a vision that would allow Spain to exert a certain influence and cultural hegemony in the Hispanic world.

Full textThis thesis is an act of reading and textual analysis as configured by Roland Barthes, who perceives the story as encompassed by the notion of «text» as a space, as a process of meaning in progress. The starting (and arrival) of this research project is fiction itself as an autonomous field of observation favorable to revealing the theory that arises from it or, at least, determine those essential elements that shape the place the writer is in with respect to literature. The dissertation aims to register the avenues of meaning especially the space where the voice of fiction and the voice of theoretical reflection converge, to recognize the dialogue they have established and to glimpse the opening of its «significance». The expression Poetics of the conjunction is presented as a space of convergence of the different plurals that take part in Vila-Mata’s fictions. These combine in such a way that they constitute a unique characteristic of his work. Poetics is understood as the praxis of a literary discourse together with the theoretical ideas that these generate and that create a complex conceptual structure. The analysis of the different fictions is organized into four sections or chapters that correspond to the selected readings or corpus of this work. 1. The reading of Never Any End to Paris1 together with La asesina ilustrada focuses on the metaphor of the «literary network». The network is constituted as a platform that brings about the movements of conjunction: parallelisms, echoes and resonances, associations and fugues that establish a unique ars combinatoria and refer to a poetics of linkage. 2. The detailed reading of Dublinesque is combined with the reading of Leaving Theories Behind. In these books the five essential elements for the «novel of the future» proclaimed by the writer are formulated and developed. These are the axes that offer us a reading of fiction as if it were the itinerary of a theory put into action or a reading of the theory in the light of fiction. 3. The analysis of Aire de Dylan explores the questions around the act of writing constantly formulated in Vila-Mata’s narrative: What is real? Who am I? Continuity and/or rupture? This is complemented by the reading of Chet Baker piensa en su arte. 4. The fourth and last section starts with the reading of The Illogic of Kassel and closes with that of Marienbad eléctrico. Both works expand the fiction-theory-art conjunction in an explicit and evident way, reflect on art and seek the renewal of forms. Within these explorations we can observe the author’s «literary manifesto» and glimpse the specificity of the idea of conjunction that prevails in his narrative. This «conjunction» points to a quantitative and qualitative operation, by encouraging the frequency of his fancies and the transformations that result from it, that is, those that define –as Barthes points out– the structural fact, the presence «everywhere» and «always».

Full textThis research studies the romance on the end of the twentieth century in Colombia between 1990 and 2005 in a panoramic orientation. The analysis is approached from the point of view of writing and is made through the analysis of some novels of the period from the concepts of world, author and fragment. This research, also, is focused on the novels Rosario Tijeras by Jorge Franco, Entre fantamas by Fernando Vallejo and Pavana del angel by Roberto Burgos Cantor. On this way, the study presents three chapters; the introduction presents the purpose of the research and its explanation. The first chapter works with the concept of worldliness in the romance Rosario Tijeras by Jorge Franco, in a direct dialogue with the novel Después de todo by Piedad Bonnett and El anarquista jubilado by Roberto Rubiano. The second chapter attempts to define the concept of author and how it is configured in Entre fantasmas by Fernando Vallejo, for that purpose, it is brought into dialogue with Memorias de un hidalgo disoluto by Héctor Abad Faciolince, Amirbar by Alvaro Mutis, Érase una vez el amor pero tuve que matarlo by Efraim Medina Reyes and Vida feliz de un joven llamado Esteban by Santiago Gamboa. The third chapter discusses how the fragment is presented in Pavana del ángel by Roberto Burgos Cantor, a novel that is part of the literary tradition of Colombia and in particular, the Colombian Caribbean. This novel is set in relation to the novel Opio en las nubes by Rafael Chaparro Madiedo and also relates to the romance Los cuadernos de N., by Nicolás Suescún. The conclusion tries to define the way this research was developed.

Full textThe aim of this Doctoral Thesis has been the study of the amorous conceptions which are present in the spanish novel of the Restoration period (taking Benito Pérez Galdós works as a point of reference), especially regarding an idealistic point of view, and considering the following two aspects:1.The importance of amorous speech for the structural and thematic constitution of these works, since it is an essential component in the sentimental, moral, and intellectual configuration of their protagonists.2.The underlying ideologies which can be discovered through the exegesis and the analysis of the relevant texts in their relation to amorous conceptions of the authors of that time. We have focused on the influence of the most important schools of thought at the end of the XIX th. century (Idealism, Positivism, Pragmatism and Spirituality), and on their reflection and development in the Spanish novel in the Restoration period.

The main purpose of this research is to make an analysis of the historical novels written by Germán Espinosa (1938-2007) the Colombian writer who has written most of the historical novels in the last 30 years of the XX century , to establish how fiction and history connect in his novels. That is, the thesis analyses questions such as the periods of the past which constitute the material for the fictional writing, how history is approached in the novels, what historic materials are part of the fiction and if they present any changes compared to the traditional historic version.
The corpus of the thesis is integrated by the novels Los cortejos del diablo.
This thesis has nine chapters. Chapter one defines the writer Germán Espinosa within his generation, details some characteristics of his literary production and highlights the qualities of his production in the context of the Colombian literary tradition.
Chapters two and three give the theoretical, historic and pragmatic context for setting up the corpus and provide the concepts and instruments to make the analysis of the novels. Chapter two defines the notion of history and the particularity of the science of the history that culminates in a textual discourse. This chapter also describes the historic relationship between history and fiction and the qualities that establish the difference between them. Chapter three is about the historical novel. This chapter describes the origin of this literary subgenre, its changes from the XIX century until the postmodernity, its tradition in Hispanoamerica and Colombia, the opinion of Germán Espinosa about this subgenre and finally the connections, boundaries and limits of the historical novels with the discourse of history and other literary genres that involve history too.
Chapters four to eight develop the analysis of the corpus through the study of the formal and thematic elements of each novel. The analysis concerns aspects as plot, story, temporality, space, characters, motives, thematic and language. The studies of novels maintain as horizon the relationship between fiction and history. Finally, each study offers an interpretation of the most relevant semantic contents and possible interrelation between the novel and historical context.
Chapter nine provides a synthesis of the partial conclusions of each study of the novels. The chapter summarizes the qualities of the novels, points out the most relevant characteristics of the relationship that historical novels of Germán Espinosa maintain whit history and offers a critical judgement of his plays.
