John Kinsella’s fiction emphasizes similar themes of environmental activism, political protest, and critique of Australian society, as does his widely acclaimed poetry. As in his verse, his orientation as a fiction writer is both local and global, regional and cosmopolitan. But in his fiction Kinsella engages in a double interrogation of both mainstream society and his own posture in opposition to it. In the novella Pink Lake a film director is interviewed by an uncomprehending journalist and driven to desperation by the philistinism of Australian society. But his own arrogance, unexamined whi

The article considers some examples from the often overlooked genre of Elizabethan verse translations of Italian novellas, concentrating in particular on the poems where the flow of the narration is interrupted by interpolated speeches, namely letters. I consider how epistolary correspondence in these stories often brings about violent outcomes, how the rhetoric of letters can complicate the reader’s interpretation and how the poets describe the material actions of writing and reading. Paratextual epistolary material is also analysed to determine the authors’ purpose.

My thesis is based on the premise that verse-novels occupy a marginalised and contested position in contemporary literature: as they tread the generic boundaries of poetry and prose writing, they are always marked by their incongruous nature. This makes for uncomfortable reading as expectations are disrupted and undermined, and, for the poet, the adoption of the verse-novel form becomes both a risky and consciously political move. The first part of the response takes the literary form of a novel, entitled Verses Nature, a postmodern, rebellious conglomerate of genres, in which I put heterogeneity and dialogism to the test. Abstract:
The final chapter of the book turns to the nexus between classical antiquity, Romanticism, and the Gothic, as it is reflected in the writings of Mary Shelley. “Reanimation” has been frequently identified as a consistent trope in Shelley’s work. This chapter argues, by contrast, that Shelley repeatedly creates fantastic scenarios in which ancient and modern times meet, and modernity is revealed to be weak or insufficient when faced with the strength and vitality of the ancient world. The chapter turns first to Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818), in which Victor Frankenstein’s efforts at creation are implicitly compared to the ancient model announced in the subtitle, and judged a grotesque failure. Then, the chapter turns to a series of texts written while Shelley was living in Italy—the short story “Valerius, the Reanimated Roman,” her novella Mathilda, and her verse drama Proserpine—each of which dramatizes the unsatisfying and disappointed search for emotional connection with characters from antiquity. Finally, the chapter turns to Shelley’s end-of-days novel The Last Man (1826). This novel’s many allusions to Rome and antiquity reinforce the gulf that separates an idealized antiquity from a doomed, weakening present. Shelley’s writings vividly demonstrate the seductive pleasures of engaging with ideas from antiquity, but ultimately she expresses little hope that we can truly connect with the frightening giants of the past.

Abstract:
Chapter 1, “Adulterated Verse,” considers Violet Fane’s Denzil Place: A Story in Verse, one of many poems to build upon the success of Aurora Leigh. Fane’s comparatively late example of a verse-novel synthesizes many of the genre’s most remarkable features. Its hybrid energies appear in the sympathetic narrative of a surprisingly happy fall into adultery. The adultery plot is exemplary for the form; this chapter explores why by showing how adultery’s cultural dynamics offer parallels to the literary dynamics of verse-novels. Fane self-consciously uses intertextuality (especially with Milton’s Paradise Lost) and scenes of reading (as in allusions to Dante’s Paolo and Francesca) to explore the ramifications of generic hybridity, above all as they concern the interplay between lyric and narrative temporalities in love. The chapter also compares the verse-novel’s effects to those of novels, such as James’s The Golden Bowl.

Abstract:
“Introduction: A Short History of a Long Form” introduces the verse-novel by describing its major features—including its contemporaneity (in contrast to epic), its storytelling impulse, its frequent use of interpolated lyric verses (“rough-mixing”), and its preference for common language—against the backdrop of Victorian genre theory and recent accounts of the period’s poetic genres. Focusing on Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Aurora Leigh, an early and influential example of the form, the Introduction suggests how Victorian writers self-consciously used the generic indeterminacy of the verse-novel to contest social as well as literary norms and express a broad range of cultural concerns. It also traces some of the prior hybrid experiments that influenced the rise of the verse-novel at mid-century and offers a preview of the chapters to come.

Abstract:
The first chapter focuses on the literary impact of the enchantress Armida’s arrival in the Italian poem, examining how the poets Abraham Fraunce and Samuel Daniel respond directly to canto 4 of Tasso’s epic. In The Arcadian Rhetorike (1588), the earliest example of English engagement with Gerusalemme liberata, Fraunce draws most heavily on this canto of the Italian poem, and particularly the descriptions of Armida, for his abundant rhetorical illustrations from Tasso’s work. The Complaint of Rosamond (1592) was the first English poem to engage with the figure of Armida herself, demonstrated in Daniel’s frequent allusions to Tasso’s enchantress in relation to his own spectral narrator, many of which have not been previously detected. The first chapter also examines the numerous English poetic responses in the first half of the 1590s to the celebrated song from a later amorous episode, the canto della rosa heard in Armida’s garden in canto 16, in translations and imitations by Robert Southwell, Spenser and Daniel, as well as allusions in Shakespeare’s Venus and Adonis (1593), to illustrate how swift and pervasive the impact of Tasso’s epic on late Elizabethan verse was.
