Abstract:
Information technologies and mobile telecommunications rapidly enter our personal and social life. Mobile phone is no longer luxury – it has become a necessity. Growing volumes of the mobile services has caused a need to expand the mobile service employment opportunities in the Internet portals. Today’s portals, created using the means, offered by software manufacturers, employ exclusively the mobile Internet service, thanks to which the users can see and manage the necessary information and process of the portal at any time and from anywhere. The problem is related with the fact that mobile Internet services are still expensive in Lithuania. Therefore one should look for cheaper ways to reach and manage portal information. In order to solve this problem one can consider the SMS and MMS message sending, suggested by mobile technologies. Basic aim of the work is to create an entertainment portal, rendering the user both various Internet entertainments (e.g. Internet acquaintances, games), and mobile entertainment (e.g. sending messages, logos, melodies, animations and games for mobile phone) as well as a wide range of mobile services to be used to obtain and to manage the portal information. In the work I describe: portal evolution, classification and creation measures („BroadVision Portal“, „IBM WebSphere Portal for Multiplatforms v5.x“, „Sun One Portal Server v6.0“, „Red Hat Enterprise Portal Server“, „Microsoft SharePoint® Portal Server 2003“, „ORACLE 9ias Portal“, „PHP:... Abstract:
Master Thesis Linnaeus University, School of Business and Economics, Växjö, Sweden Authors: Juan Calcerrada, Henrik Wapner Tutor: Sarah Philipson Title: New service development of SMS-lending companies in Sweden Introduction: Many customers started to get into debt from taking sms-loans during the last years with the news being highlighted in media frequently. After the financial crisis in 2008, new laws & regulations were imposed on the sms-lending companies. As of today, the sms- lending companies are still having problems with customers whose debts are being handled at the enforcement administration of Sweden. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify the major barriers that serve as hinders for service development among sms-lending companies in Sweden. Method: A qualitative study has been conducted through semi-structured interviews with CEO’s, operation managers, and marketing managers of six companies in the sms-lending industry. Conclusion: The result shows that a standard model is not necessary for sms-lending companies in order to be profitable. However, none of the companies has a large share of the market, making it fragmented. Standardization in the market and problems to take patents on service innovation makes it difficult for the companies to innovate other than in their internal processes. The barriers to successful NSD processes are somewhat juridical and financial ones, but, although not mentioned by the interviewed companies themselves, we believe that the lack of customer involvement in the NSD process is serving as the major barrier. This is due to the fact that service companies are more dependent on customer interaction because of the service offerings being intangible, thus demanding a closely-monitored “fit” between service characteristics and customer requirements.

Abstract:
Introduction: It is undeniable that green effort returns more than just a better image for firms. GSCM initiative has resulted in many successful companies transition to a more sustainable organization and supply network. However, the evidence for smaller entities are not abundantly available and one can assume that GSCM is not currently adopted among this size of enterprises. With this premise, the study focuses on why these firms are reluctant to adopt GSCM initiative. The study focuses on a single case study of one successful business not adopting GSCM.   Purpose: To help SMEs prepare for what they might expect when taking green initiative, this study seeksto find barriersfor why GSCM is not adopted among smaller firms. Method: A single holistic explorative study have been conducted. With qualitative approach, the interviews are analyzed and deliver enriched data to unveil reason for thefirms in this study supply network.  Findings: Every respondent admitted to having financial constraint. Therefore, they are not investing in the GSCM initiative because of unknown ROI.This indicate that the firm do not know enough about the initiative and left out one important activity following the initiative, the value chain. These firms also recognize external barriers, this again turnsback to knowledge of value chain and lacking in communication.  Conclusion: The barriers appear in internal and external form, meaning that some barriers are over the firm’s owncontrol. However, smaller firms somehow unconsciously create own barriers by not having a good communication and neglecting shared environmental value within their own supply network.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the potential for the use of mobile devices in New Zealand healthcare. Adoption of mobile technology can potentially improve information access at point of care, increase efficiency and patient safety, significantly reduce costs, enhance workflow, and promote evidence-based practice to help make effective decisions. Mobile devices of different size and form such as laptops, tablet PCs, PDAs, smart phones, mobile phones, and RFID offer portability, remote access to clinical data, traceability, convergence, and connectivity which traditional computers cannot emulate. The pervasiveness of mobile devices is increasing both globally and within New Zealand. The potential of mobile technology in healthcare has been recognized by many developed countries; there is adequate evidence for improving productivity, efficiency, and patient engagement. The study focuses on the three prominent healthcare sectors in New Zealand: Primary, Secondary, and Community. As mobile technology is still an underdeveloped area within New Zealand’s healthcare industry, the use of a qualitative research approach involving surveys and interviews helps to determine which m-health applications are most appropriate to adopt here. The sample surveyed consists of health providers, health strategists, and technology vendors. The potential of mobile devices that were identified from the interviews included real-time access to information such as clinical data, drug database, and medical references. the use of SMS reminders and alerts, use of RFID to reduce medical errors, manage patients and assets, and for identification of medical equipment and drug identification. Over 80 percent of the participants considered privacy, confidentiality, and security to be very important challenges in the m-health domain. Many challenges and implications were identified, including technical constraints such as form factor of mobile devices, storage space, limited battery life, durability, and reading distance of RFID devices. Privacy, security, and ethical issues were discussed including the sensitivity of personal data, sending and receiving of clinical data, RFID tracking ability, security, and encryption standards, authentication barriers, and cultural barriers.

Schmid, Bernhard. "The effect of Basel II on SME financing in Germany : an exploratory study of the impact of the new Basel Accord on SMEs and financiers in Germany." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/5206.

Full text
Abstract:
The New Capital Accord (henceforth, Basel II), is expected to impose dramatic changes on banks and other providers of corporate financing, as well as companies. Literature indicates that small and medium sized enterprises (henceforth SMEs), in general, and in particular German SMEs seem to be affected: Germany has the highest SME density with SMEs comprising 99.6% of all corporations (IMF, 2008), these SMEs are highly dependent on banks for financing (see Jacobson et al, 2006). However, there is huge controversy in the literature concerning how these changes will look, right before Basel II came into effect in the years 2007 / 2008 in the European Union. In order to explore this effect from a Post-Basel II perspective, the objective of this research project is to establish what effect Basel II will have on corporate financing of SMEs in Germany. The high impact on SMEs (in Germany), combined with controversial evidence from extant Pre-Basel II research, indicates a high relevance to academics and practitioners for this thesis. This thesis is probably the first from a Post-Basel II perspective which covers both the SMEs' as well as the financiers' perspective. Based on a structured literature review using the comparative method (Peters, 1998) 'Most Different Systems' evidence is provided that there is no consistent picture regarding the effect of Basel II. Therefore, further research is needed to determine whether the effect in Germany is consistent, from a Post-Basel II perspective, with regards to the conditions which trigger certain mechanisms, from a 'scientific realism' (Smith, 1998) perspective, because the literature indicates that 'positivist generalising' has limited validity. Building on Creswell (2003), an 'exploratory sequential' design was created to test three initial hypotheses (as confirmation or refutation of a theory, see Gujarati, 2003:8): a multi-method design is best suited to the author's philosophical stance of 'scientific realism' by means of triangulation (Robson, 2002:174). The result of the initial quantitative phase is based on the analysis of questionnaire data from 125 SMEs and financiers (banks, private equity companies, family offices, providers of alternative means of financing) derived from a probabilistic sample frame in the fourth quarter of 2008. Mathematical models for SMEs and financiers regarding the three initial hypotheses were set-up and tested using the appropriate statistical tests. In order to limit bias by means of a spill-over effect from the financial crises, control questions were used. The subsequent qualitative phase by means of semistructured elite interviews (Saunders et al, 2007:312) between March and May 2009 enabled a valid triangulation and provided in-depth insights into how SMEs can cope best with Basel II. The purposive sample, of 17 'important cases', included company owners and top-level financier executives. In a conclusive quantitative and qualitative synopsis, the three initial hypotheses were acknowledged. However, the qualitative in-depth analysis by means of 'causal networks' (Miles and Huberman, 1994) led to an amendment of the hypotheses as follows: 1. Corporate finance has become different for SMEs because the 'house bank principle' has changed to a 'core bank principle' due to Basel II. Shopping around regarding credits will be more difficult which makes financing more difficult. This could be overcompensated by major SMEs, by using non-credit corporate financing which leads to a reduction of the 'house bank' principle. 2. SMEs can cope best with the effect when they: a) proactively engage in rating and improve the parameters, or b) they adjust their strategy as stated in hypothesis 3. 3. Financiers (especially non-bank financiers) will engage in SME corporate finance when they have a sound financial basis / management and when they adjust their strategy in terms of growth with the aim of niche market leadership and when they open up for exit strategies.

Chromobacterium violaceum is a ?-proteobacteria commonly found around tropical and subtropical regions throughout the globe. It produces many metabolites with biotechnological properties such as antitumoral peptides, antibiotics and polymers that have potential to replace the oil-based ones. Although it has been extensively studied over the past 40 years, there are many aspects of C. violaceum that remains unclear until today. We have conducted a biochemical study on the homologous recombination (HR) machinery of C. violaceum, mainly in RecA and its paralog, RadA/Sms. We performed in vitro assays from initial and late steps of HR such as D-loop formation and branch migration, respectively, with their corresponding molecular actors and how RadA/Sms influenced each one. We observed cvRadA/Sms influences negatively D-loop formation promoted by cvRecA and through pull-down assay we have observed an interaction between these two proteins. We also observed the DNA-binding preference of cvRadA/Sms and cvRecA and observed that this protein binds preferentially to dsDNA instead ssDNA, unlike cvRecA. No involvement of cvRadA/Sms on branch migration reactions was detected. In this work, we also described, for the first time, the isolation, sequencing and annotation of a new plasmid from C. violaceum, which we named ChVi1 and has 44,236 base pairs, 39 predicted open reading frames (ORFs) and, possibly, two origins of replication. Most of the ORFs codes for hypothetical and structural bacteriophage proteins. By using restriction digestion and Next-generation sequencing (NGS) we also looked for the presence of a similar plasmid in other seven C. violaceum strains isolated from amazon region. Our analysis suggest the presence of a plasmid similar to ChVi1 in two of these strains. The present work describes for the first time a biochemical characterization of RadA/Sms and RecA from C. violaceum which have different roles in HR. Moreover, the discovery of ChVi1 opens a path to further explore C. violaceum?s biology.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Mechanical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2008
Product innovation has transformed the minds of business people because of its ability to increase productivity. Other than increased productivity it also allows companies to extend the range of the available products to consumers as well as lowering the prices consumers have to pay. Product innovation if managed correctly will create wealth and reward risk-taking by means of technological development throughout organisational processes. SMEs fail to manage product innovation because they are unable to cope with pressures exerted by external factors as well as lack business management skills. This then impacts on the level of innovation that takes place in a company. A lack of innovation and sound leadership skills often leads to very little strategic vision in the company. This influences the commitment of the workforce and often causes the downfall of a company. Case study methodology was used to collect and analyze the data, which was drawn from an empirical study covering nine engineering companies which practices NPD (New Product Development). Observation, questionnaire and personal interviews were used to collect relevant data for analysis. In addition, the SPSS 14.0 was utilized in order to generate frequencies, tables, and in particular graphics, as the researcher believes that graphics are helpful and easy to make the analysis more understandable. The paper aims to investigate whether SMEEs in the Western Cape are using key NPD success factors to deal with the environmental uncertainties that disturb the management of NPD. The findings of the study indicated that the principles of key NPD success factors were found to be in place in the SMEEs in the Western Cape. All the managers who took part in the survey showed determination and commitment towards the success of their organizations. Those SMEEs proved that their existence was meant to satisfy the needs of their customers. Those managers also showed that they knew exactly what their customers needed. Employees in those organizations worked as a team and produced good quality products that satisfied their customers. Those organizations started small but grew with time as the needs of their customers continuously changed. The growth in those organizations was seen in the number of employees employed from time to time.

Mueller, Jens Helmut Friedrich. "Movements in the Long White Cloud of Governance -Shifts in Attitudes to Governance in New Zealand." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Management, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8963.

Abstract:
This research interrogates a large population of shareholders, senior managers and company directors in New Zealand as to their reasons for considering board service, their competence in governance skills areas, their beliefs as to whether board room diversity is needed and their firms’ interests to recruit further independent directors to their boards. With a considerable deference to the contributions of agency theory as the conventional cornerstone to explain the connection of directors into organizations for the purpose of governance service, this work explores the extension of agency theory by adding an additional driver for governance engagement by company directors: Commitment. Based on this research, company directors in New Zealand appear to base their interest in serving as independent directors on company boards largely on the desire to “do good”. This raises the prospect of a deeper and more meaningful relationship with firms where they serve as directors. Ignorance of this important component of the director/firm relationship by the firms might render directors less willing to contribute and deprive firms of the strong support and engagement of their directors. Lack of recognition of this additional component to the fabric of an enduring committed relationship between external directors and their firms may require a different behavior of firms during the recruitment, board induction training and maintenance of the director relationship. While the strong expression of interest by SMEs in additional independent directors is a welcome sign of rising governance standards in New Zealand’s large group of such enterprises, concern emerges about the potential lack of competence by directors in several areas of governance. While directors appear to compensate for deficiencies in skills with an extra dose of commitment, significant needs for upskilling exists in this sector. It is noted that the absence of well-established, easily accessible and comprehensive director training schemes in New Zealand conflicts with the expected large number of additional independent director recruitments in the near future. Shareholders, senior managers and directors report a need for diversity on boards in the area of business experience, but no specific concern is expressed as to how any specific importance of gender or age while other factors, such as work experience and global knowledge, are of much greater interest. This could indicate that the status quo of only a small number of women on boards in New Zealand is accepted, but in the context of this work more likely indicates that directors will not be recruited (or excluded from recruitment) in the future on the basis of gender. This research attempts to lay groundwork for a more intensive investigation into the true motivations of company directors when they think of an independent director mandate and while they discharge directorship duties. There now appears to be solid evidence that the historic application of agency theory does not completely describe the factors of motivation and relationship under which independent directors serve on company boards.

Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to search the relationship between development, innovativeness and networking. In recent regional development debates, regional networks of SMEs and regional knowledge potential have been emphasized as important components of development. In the context of the thesis, inter-regional networks of SMEs are analyzed as an alternative approach to the regionally bounded perspective. It is hypothesized that regional and inter-regional networks complement each other, and both of them play an important role in regional development and innovation processes. The thesis acquires the indicators for the increasing importance of external networks and innovation capacity in the globalisation era. Hence, the study explains the relative importance of spatial proximity in different types of networks, the positive and negative contributions of external networks to regional networks, and the contributions of regional, national and global networks to innovation activities of SMEs. The theoretical framework discussed in this thesis is based on the recent regional development models and contemporary networking and innovation studies. The main findings of this study contribute to this debate by modifying some of assumptions related to networking and innovation activities of SMEs. In the thesis, the method used for research is field survey, realized in three industrial regions. 131 SMEs have been involved in this survey in order to obtain a qualitative data about network and innovation behavior of SMEs in the sample regions.

For faster acquisition in bursted environments for SMS (Short Messaging Service) and other lower-bit rate applications, non-coherent detection techniques are proposed. Non-Coherent detection demodulators are proposed because faster acquisition capability in bursted environments can result in a reduced amount of preamble bits in the messaging frame, i.e. less overhead, resulting in an effective increase in spectral efficiency. Reducing the preamble can also provide performance enhancement opportunities for Feher Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (FQPSK) [1] and for other systems. The preamble can also be varied to provide for better Bit Error Rate (BER) performance. The lower bit rate environment also gives the opportunity to employ simpler architectures in lieu of preamble modification. Several non-coherent detection alternatives are described.

Innovation intermediaries provide a range of services to assist firms during the process of innovation. How SMEs perceive innovation intermediaries is an area of investigation that would provide important information on how innovation intermediaries’ assist small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This study focuses on the cleantech industry and explores SMEs’ expectations and perceptions of an established community-based intermediary (CBI) moving into their sector. A qualitative research methodology was adopted to collect data from 15 sample SMEs. In regards to SMEs, the findings show that cleantech companies face financing, partnerships, marketing, sales, regulatory and bureaucratic challenges. In regards to innovation intermediaries, the findings showcase how CBI, a regional intermediary, is not effective in supporting cleantech SMEs with their sector specific needs or challenges.

The aim of this thesis work was to investigate theadsorption of surfactants to different nonpolar interfaces.Particularly, the effects of the polar group and the nature ofthe hydrophobic interface were elucidated. The interfacialbehavior of the liquid-vapor interface was investigated bymeans of surface tension measurements. Here the effect of thepolar group and the hydrocarbon chain length was investigatedin a systematic manner. It was found that the shorter of thetwo chains examined, decyl, generated a larger surface pressurecontribution than the longer, dodecyl. Furthermore, the sugarbased surfactants behaved differently as compared to theethylene oxide based ones. The former could be modelled byassuming a hard disc behavior of the head group while thelatter displayed polymeric behavior. The influence of saltconcentration on the surface tension behavior of an ionicsurfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate, was investigated. Theresult could be rationalized by employing the Gouy- Chapmanmodel to the polar region. Furthermore, mixtures of two sugarbased surfactants were investigated by surface tensionmeasurements and the adsorbed amount of the two components atthe interface atdifferent concentrations and fractions in thebulk were obtained by applying the Gibbs surface tensionequation. It was found that the molecule with the smaller headgroup adsorbed preferentially, and more so as the totalsurfactant concentration was increased. These findings could beexplained by considering the interactions generated by thedifferent head groups. The adsorption of sugar surfactants toan isolated hydrophobic surface was studied by means of wettingmeasurements and the behavior was similar to that at theliquid-vapor interface. Wetting isotherms were measured on twodifferent hydrophobic surfaces where the covalently attachedhydrophobic layers were in a crystalline and fluid state, respectively. The wetting results revealed that the sugarsurfactants anchored in the fluid hydrophobic layer. This had asignificant influence on the force profile. For example, at thecrystalline surface the surfactant monolayers were easilyremoved as the surface came into contact at relatively lowapplied loads. This was not the case when the hydrophobic layerwas in a fluid state. Here a significant fraction of thesurfactants remained between the surfaces. Disjoining pressureisotherms were measured using a sugar based surfactant thatwere thoroughly purified and compared to the as receivedsample. Even the purified sample showed a double-layer forcealthough lower as compared to the as received, one. Asignificant difference in foam stability was also observed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Mechanical Engineering))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2010
Many companies are currently focusing on how to stay innovative, how to innovate and how to create an innovation climate in their companies. Why is innovation vital to companies? New Product Development (NPD) can be a key factor in this regard. Companies believe that NPD is their life blood; it can be the better way to survive firmly and be more competitive. In addition, the strategy of how to manage NPD process effectively and efficiently is becoming a powerful way of achieving a competitive edge. As Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a significant role in South African economic development, it is critical for companies especially (SMEs) to seek an ideal way to manage innovation productively. However, to be innovative is not easy for any organization and it should be managed effectively. The effective management of innovation and NPD in SMEs is investigated in this study. Innovation and NPD has already become the key drivers of sustainability and competitiveness for many companies especially SMEs. Innovation and NPD as the main subjects that are carefully studied, discussed and understood in larger corporations and multinational enterprises. It would appear that the same cannot always be said when it comes to SMEs.

In this research, we are interested in the issue of the non-usage of technology. As a first step, we investe in the study of the different forms of refusal that certain information and communication techniques were confronted with across history. As a second step, and on basis of a field study, we analyse the reasons of Internet usage refusal. In this technological world, there are not only users but also non-users, recalcitrants who refuse this tool: refuse in the sense to reject, not agree to it, not agree to adopt it and to use it. We want throughout this job to understand the reasons for such refusal. This phenomenon should not be considered to be a dysfunction but a fact that must be explained and that can have respectable reasons. The refusal seems visceral and irrational, merely because the technical novelty frightens. But it also proceeds from a reflection, an analysis, a set of opinions and thoughtful ideas. Definitely, the refusal of the Internet seems to cover a multitude of parameters. Several explicative elements of technical, psychological, cognitive, cultural and ideological order were identified during our inquiry

Abstract:
Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) are considered a vital catalyst for economic growth and a source of job creation. In South Africa, with the high levels of unemployment, the contribution made by SMEs is of particular importance. However this sector of the economy is plagued by a high rate of business failure. In an effort to improve the current situation, this study sought to identify which business practices and entrepreneurial traits are present in SMEs in the Eastern Cape that may enhance business performance. The research was carried out amongst SMEs in the Eastern Cape however the results and recommendations of the study can be applied to SMEs in other parts of the country. The research methodology employed in this study was a quantitative approach. A web-based survey was distributed to potential respondents. The criteria used in identify potential respondents for the purpose of this study was that, the SME had to have less than 200 employees and been in business for more than three years. A combination of snowball and convenience sampling was used to select the sample. The researcher developed a conceptual framework using the literature as basis. The survey was distributed to 40 potential respondents. A total of 21 responses were received which translates to a 51 percent response rate. Data analysis was performed by means of descriptive and inferential statistics. The study confirmed the existence of a significant relationship between the independent variables being human resource management, accounting, technology, internal controls and entrepreneurial traits and the dependent variables being business performance. The study affirmed the notion that certain business practices and entrepreneurial traits should be prevalent in a SMEs business in order to enhance business performance. The findings of this study are such that these business practices should be present however the variables highlighted here are not absolute as there are other business practices that are of equal importance.

Abstract:
Most histories of the New Left emphasize that some variant of Marxism ultimately influenced activists in their pursuit of social change. Through careful examination of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), I argue that New Left thought was not always anti-liberal. Founding SDS members hardly rejected liberal political theory during the early years of the movement (1960-1963). New Left thought was profoundly indebted to John Dewey's political and philosophical method. Deweyan liberalism suggested theory should be directly applicable in the world of social action and truth should always be regarded as contingent. The connection between Dewey and SDS becomes apparent when one considers the role of Arnold S. Kaufman in the movement. Kaufman, a University of Michigan philosopher, applied Dewey's political and philosophical method in his work as an activist and academic. He coined the term "participatory democracy" for the New Left. Consequently, this key New Left concept was itself grounded in Dewey's philosophy.

Abstract:
This participant-observation study explores the process of gathering and evaluating both financial and non-financial information and communication and transfer of that information within a medium-size Electrical Company in Christchurch, New Zealand. The previous literature has established the importance and the main characteristics of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), mainly studying manufacturing companies. However, there has been little research done in New Zealand on the overall communication process and the financial and non-financial information usage in a small-medium enterprise. Face-to-face interviews were carried out with all the office employees and two partners, along with a ten month participant-observation in the Electrical Company in order to understand how financial and non-financial information is communicated and processed in an SME. Also, research in an SME that has overcome the 2008 economic depression and several major earthquakes allows a deep understanding of lessons learned and what is valued by the Electrical Company. The research has found characteristics of this SME similar to those that have been mentioned in previous literature. However, the partners of the Electrical Company understand the importance of financial management and use financial information extensively to ensure the business expenses are under control. Moreover, the partners use more than just financial information to manage the company. They gather non-financial information through talking to their accountant, their customers and people in the same industry and they keenly follow the news on the rebuilding of Christchurch.

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
Quinta dos Termos1 is a Portuguese family-owned SME, producing biological wines from Beira Interior. The roots of the company go back to 1945, but it was only in the XXI century, under the management of João Carvalho, that the company adopted a formal business approach and expanded its sales. Nowadays, Quinta dos Termos produces and sells award-winning D.O.C. wines from Beira Interior targeted at the premium and upper premium segments, to clients across the country. Facing a stagnant market in its maturity stage at home, the company has acknowledged the need to find new markets abroad and is willing to commit the necessary resources to do so. After performing an extensive analysis of the company and scanning for the most attractive international markets, it has been defined that the company should export its wines to the U.S.A, particularly, the metropolitan area comprising New York, New Jersey and Edison. This Work Project substantiates the attractiveness of the U.S. wine market and provides recommendations on the strategy to be pursued by Quinta dos Termos.

Abstract:
Energetic polyatomic cluster beams are increasingly used in materials processing and surface analysis applications. In secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) such beams have previously been utilised to investigate the chemical distribution of organic molecules (polymers, biological molecules and pharmaceuticals etc). One important application is in organic electronics, where the depth-distribution of organic components is important in the device performance. Massive gas cluster ion beams (GCIBs) have produced more successful depth-profiles for organic electronic devices that smaller projectiles including SF5+ and C60+. However, further work is needed to investigate and optimise experimental parameters to deliver the necessary SIMS performance. This study focused on molecular depth profiling of organic insulator (PMMA) and semiconductor (PTAA and TIPS-pentacene) materials, in single and bi-layered combinations, utilising cluster SIMS, using C60+ and Arn+, at different temperatures and energies. In general, at room temperature, the best depth resolution was obtained, using large Ar-GCIBs of low energy per atom (E/n ~10 eV), in comparison with the smaller Ar-GCIBs or with C60+ beams at the same total impact energy. On materials which sputtering under C60+ bombardment, ion and neutral yields were greatest due to the higher E/n, compared with GCIBs. Data from PMMA show that the sputter yield under C60 and Arn projectiles conform to the published 'universal' dependence of Y/n to E/n. Depth profiling of the semiconductor compounds were unsuccessful, using C60+ projectiles. For depth profiles using large GCIB projectiles, an increase in the secondary ion yield was observed at the interface with the silicon substrate - a phenomenon which was not observed for the smaller projectiles. In general, the most successful depth profiles (i.e. more constant molecular and fragment secondary ion yields, observed at pseudo-steady-state regions) and best depth resolutions were obtained at cryogenic temperatures - conditions under which corresponding sputtering yields and secondary ion yields were suppressed.

Upcoming non-volatile memory technologies are a big promise in computer architecture and are expected to be powerful tools to address today?s issues regarding efficient data manipulation. They provide high performance and byte granularity while also having the distinct advantage of being persistent. However in order to explore these technologies to their full potential, existing systems and architecture must adapt to this new way of working with data and workaround the challenges that come with it. Existing work in the area already proposes methods to adapt existing architecture to NVM as well as innovative ways to employ these memories in future applications. However operating system support to such NVM-enabled solutions, although existent, still very limited. In this work, we present two variations of the existing mmap system call, designed to both explore NVM characteristics and provide user data consistency. Both are very simple solutions that allow users to control the persistence and define checkpoints to their files while using the common mapped file syntax. We have implemented and tested these methods over Linux using a NVM file system as our base. Our results show that these mechanisms can ensure file integrity in the presence of system failures while also providing a reasonable performance.

Abstract:
Background: To stay competitive and efficient on a global market, firms have to generate new products and service ideas using closed or open innovation processes. Open innovation activities emerge from both internal and external innovative resources and while SMEs could and do adopt a variation of innovation models, they tend to adopt open innovation activities. Collaboration is one of the most important factors of open innovation and SMEs collaborate to enhance their internal innovation activities and outcomes, as it provides them access to complementary assets and technologically knowledge. However, the literature is not clear as to how SME decide on prospect partners." Purpose:The overall purpose of this thesis is to map the structure of the decision-making process of SMEs regarding partner selection at the early stage of technology exploration (R&D stage) within open innovation and new product development. Method:The approach of this study is a qualitative research method with an abductive inspired research approach. The data are collected through interview study. A Theory Driven Thematic Analysis technique is used to analyse the data. The respondents are found by nonprobability sampling in form of purposive sampling. Findings:Our findings show that SMEs managers, R&D managers, and CEOs who participated within this research consider many practical factors that drive their decision making process regarding partner selection. The main goal they try to achieve when choosing partners is to build collaborations with: the highest quality of outcomes, most cost-effective activities, and most time-effective processes. Conclusion:SMEs, within our sample, do not follow a specific or pre-written strategies when choosing partners. Moreover, SMEs managers prefer to innovate internally without collaborations if they had the needed resources. If SMEs manager had to collaborate, they search for existing partners. However, if they had no existing partners to fulfil the needed resources, they search for new partners

Abstract:
Molecular beam scattering experiments are used to investigate the extent of thermal accommodation of Ne, CD4, ND3, and D2O in collisions with long chain CH3, NH2, and OH terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold. Surface rigidity, internal degrees of freedom of the impinging gas, and potential energy surface well depths have been explored as a way to predict the outcome of a gas-surface collision. Ne is used to assess the mechanical rigidity of the SAMs. The order of rigidity is CH3 < NH2 ~ OH. The NH2 and OH terminated SAMs are more rigid due to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding structure at the gas-surface interface. Despite the hydrogen bonding nature of the NH2 and OH terminated SAMs CD4, ND3, and D2O are extensively thermally accommodated on the surfaces, therefore surface rigidity is no solely responsible for energy transfer dynamics. It was found that the number of degrees of freedom do not predict how extensively a gas will thermally accommodate on a surface capable of hydrogen bonding. A qualitative correlation between increasing potential energy well depths and the extent of thermal accommodation has been established as a result of these scattering experiments.

Abstract:
Checking behavior is essential to maximizing gain and/or minimizing loss in our daily lives and relies on a normal action monitoring process. Although several studies have explored the neurobiological basis of doubt and uncertainty, both the physiology and physiopathology of checking, its most manifest behavioral consequence, remain poorly understood. This PhD project aims at characterizing physiological doubt and checking behavior in non-human primates. To do so, we trained two rhesus monkeys at a newly designed Check-or-Go task that allows the animal to multiple-check and change the availability of a reward before taking the final decision leading to that reward. During the task, we recorded frontal EEG activity and single neuronal activity in the rostral part of the ACC (CMAr), and the pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA), and quantified salivary cortisol in order to correlate this biological marker of anxiety with checking behavior. Our results show that, as humans, monkeys have the metacognitive ability to express voluntary checking behavior that depends on uncertainty monitoring, relates to anxiety and involves brain frontal areas

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis is about the nonlocal properties of permuation symmetric states and the potential usefulness of such properties in quantum information processing. The nonlocality of almost all symmetric states, except Dicke states is shown by constructing an $n$-party Hardy paradox. With the help of the Majorana representation, suitable measurement settings can be chosen for these symmetric states which satisfy the paradox. An extended CH inequality can be derived from the probabilistic conditions of the paradox. The inequality is shown to be violated by all symmetric states. The nonlocality properties and entanglement properties of symmetric states are also discussed and compared, natbly with respect to persistency and monogamy. It is shown that te degeneracy of some symmetric states is linked to the persistency, which provides a way to use device independent tests to separte nonlocality classes. It is also shown that the inequalities used to show the nonlocality of all symmetric states are not strictly monogamous.A new inequality for Dicke states is shown to be monogamous when the number of parties goes to infinity. But all these inequalites can not detect genuine nonlocality. Applications of nonlocality to communication complexity and Bayesian game theory are also discussed

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this article is to explore performance management (PM) practices in high growth, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the strategies used to maximise the output of rare resources. In addition, this article explores challenges in managing performance during periods of high growth. Design / Methodology / Approach – This article is an exploratory study of employee performance management within high-growth SMEs. The analysis of twelve in-depth interviews with high-growth SME individuals provides deeper insight into how formal and informal processes are used to manage high performance. Findings – High-growth SMEs rely on informal management practices to build a high performance culture. These practices include building relationships, honest and frequent communication, addressing the diverse needs of their employees, empowering individuals to recognise their value within the firm and utilising peer accountability. Various challenges were identified including perceived unfairness due to inconsistent informal processes, risks management resulting from informal control practices, managing low performers due to limited formal records and neglection of addressing poor performance due to close relationships without honest conversation. Practical implications – This research highlights the need for start-up and small SMEs to manage employee performances for sustained growth to larger SME’s. This groundwork provides insight to build long-term growth. Originality / Value – This article introduces a framework to describe the informal performance management practices of high-growth SMEs. This framework contributes to the understanding of how informal PM practices align with the strategy of the firm.

Alexandre, Herve. "L'EFFICIENCE BRUITÉE. UNE ANALYSE NON LINÉAIRE DU MARCHÉ FRANÇAIS DES ACTIONS." Phd thesis, Université de Bourgogne, 1994. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00490273.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis describes two proposed schemes that could be used to secure mobile messaging (SMS/MMS) as well as one scheme that could be used to secure mobile content. The security services we considered in securing the mobile messages are confidentiality, authentication, non-repudiation and integrity. We used Identity Based Cryptography in order to secure the mobile messaging and Blowfish algorithm to secure the mobile content. Due to some of the disadvantages imposed by the Identity Based Cryptography, we recommended using it along with the RSA algorithm. The proposed schemes were implemented in java and tested on an actual device, Nokia N70. In addition, we measured the time required by each of the algorithms we used to encrypt/decrypt a certain number of bytes. We found that the time taken by RSA and Blowfish algorithms will not be noticeable by the user. However, since the implementation of the Identity Based Cryptography we used was not meant to run on mobile devices, we encountered a noticeable delay whenever encrypting/decrypting the data using this algorithm. Securing the SMS messages will make it to be considered as one of the proposed means that could be used to conduct m-commerce. In addition, securing the MMS messages and the mobile content will increase the usability and the reliability of the mobile phones especially to the users on the move.

Abstract:
Low income countries such as Bangladesh are among many of the developing countries in the world where people suffer from poverty which affect their living conditions, especially the empowerment, more specifically economic empowerment of rural and/or indigent women. Many actors such as non-government organizations (NGOs) aspire towards working on means which will improve the empowerment status of rural women in the economy of Bangladesh. It is hoped to thereby reduce poverty levels which in turn they hope will impact the society and its economy positively. One of the methods which many developing countries have chosen in order to increase economic empowerment of rural women is through encouraging their participation in the operation of small scale and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).  Bangladesh is thus trying to increase the power and control women have at different levels of society by exerting a significant role on the use of SMEs to generate empowerment among rural women and to transform the economic condition of these impoverished women and their families by providing them means of earning income and hence making them economically more stable. However, there are still many impediments which hinder the success of SMEs in empowering women in Bangladesh; such as entrenched gender inequalities, lack of knowledge and access to livelihood resources, unbalanced power structures, etc.. These impediments are even more prevalent among rural women and affect the impact that SMEs have on the lives of rural Bangladeshi women. If these issues can be resolved rural/indigent women of Bangladesh can be better empowered through the activities of women-owned enterprises to offer better standards of living for rural women. This study identified various ways that SMEs positively impact the lives of indigent women in Bangladesh and change their social and economic conditions, drawing on theories and concepts of empowerment, power, and alternative development. The connection between empowerment and livelihood resources have important implications for women economic empowerment. This connection was in turn used to discover the reasons behind why so many rural women suffer from lack of empowerment, power and social and political invisibility despite the push by NGOs and the government to make women a part of the paid workforce through women empowerment initiatives.

Arrayago, Luquin Itsaso. "New approach for efficient design of stainless steel RHS and SHS elements." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/398697.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the cross-section and member behaviour of cold-formed stainless steel RHS and SHS elements and proposes an alternative and more efficient design approach. Combined with aesthetic appeal, exceptional mechanical properties and excellent corrosion and fire resistances, efficient design methods present stainless steel as an attractive alternative to the usual carbon steel for structural applications. Exhaustive studies of the nonlinear stress-strain behaviour and the analytical modelling of the response are presented for different stainless steel alloys. The study was based on 600 experimental stress-strain curves obtained from the literature and complemented with 42 tensile coupon tests. Although the material model currently included in Annex C of EN1993-1-4 (2006) was found to accurately represent the measured stress-strain curves for the different stainless steel grades and material types, revised equations were proposed for the strain hardening parameters n and m and for the ultimate tensile stress and strain for ferritics. A comprehensive experimental programme on five cross-sections of ferritic stainless steel grade 1.4003 tubular elements is also described. The actual geometry and initial geometric imperfections were carefully measured and the material response of flat and corner regions of each section were characterized by conducting 20 tensile tests on coupons extracted from the cross-sections. The cross-sectional behaviour was investigated through 10 stub column tests under pure compression and 16 subjected to combined loading conditions, while 8 beams were tested under four-point bending configuration and 4 subjected to three-point bending loading conditions. At member level, the bending moment redistribution capacity of ferritic continuous beams was investigated by conducting 9 five-point bending tests. Finally, 12 tests were conducted on ferritic stainless steel columns to determine the behaviour of members subjected to concentric and eccentric compression loads. Additional data on austenitic, ferritic and duplex stainless steel elements was generated from parametric studies based on finite element models validated from the conducted experiments. The assessment of the codified design expressions was derived by comparing experimental and numerical strengths with the calculated resistance predictions for stainless steel cross-sections and members subjected to different loading conditions. Results demonstrated that predictions are noticeably conservative for stocky and slender cross-sections since enhanced material properties are not considered and the susceptibility of cross-sections to local buckling is underestimated. Thus, a full slenderness range Direct Strength Method (DSM) approach was proposed for stainless steel RHS and SHS cross-sections and members based on the same strength curve for all loading conditions. The proposed approach was found to be more accurate for cross-sections, columns and beam-columns since strain hardening effects are incorporated and due to the fact that the actual stress distribution of the cross-section is considered when determining the slenderness. The reliability of the approach was demonstrated by statistical analyses, enabling its use in structural design standards. Finally, the applicability of design approaches based on plastic analysis to stainless steel continuous beams was assessed. The analysis of continuous beam strengths demonstrated that capacity predictions based on the first hinge formation result in a considerable overconservatism and that traditional plastic design can be safely applied with the Class 1 cross-section limit provided in EN1993-1-4 (2006). However, it was also statistically demonstrated that the best capacity predictions are obtained for design methods including both bending moment redistribution and strain hardening effects, such as the Continuous Strength Method for indeterminate structures or the proposed DSM-based approach.
