Title: Understanding leadership in successful Non-profit organizations: a case-study of IKSU

Authors: Linnéa Larsson, Peter Storhannus

Supervisor: Jessica Eriksson

Date: 2008-01-24

Summary:

Most leadership research has made within regular corporations or public sector organizations in the business world. However, the research on leadership in the non-profit organizations (NPOs) has been scarce even though these organizations play an important part in society and the economy as well. It is argued that leadership in NPOs is different from that of a for-profit organization due to the different preconditions that exist in a non-profit organization.

The research question of this thesis is therefore; “what characterizes leadership in NPOs and what leadership styles can be found?”.

Our purpose with this thesis is to provide an understanding of the leadership in a successful non-profit organization. More specifically, understand the leadership at IKSU. We identify IKSU as a combination between a mutual benefit organization and a voluntary association. We have chosen to make a case study by interviewing managers in different positions at the successful non-profit organization IKSU located in Umeå.

The interviewees also answered a questionnaire about their leadership as a complement to the interviews. Further, a questionnaire was sent out to the interviewed managers’ employees in order to receive better contextual understanding about their self-perceived leadership. Literature about NPOs and leadership in both NPOs and for-profit organization has been used. Two frameworks are central throughout the thesis; the situational leadership model constructed by Hersey & Blanchard (1981) have been used to analyze and understand the leadership styles and the four cornerstones of leadership by Ekstam (2002) have been used to construct the interview guide and to analyze the leaders’ roles in the organization.

The results have shown that he leadership styles that we can find at IKSU are supporting and coaching and that the leaders most developed roles are the roles as developers and teambuilders. We conclude that the use of high supportive behaviour might be due to both the fact that they have such close relationships between leaders and subordinates that the leaders feel uncomfortable adopting a low task/low relationship style, as that could instead damage the close relationship and lead to lower motivation and commitment from the employee. Another reason to use high relationship leadership style is due to that there exist no clear goals within the organization. The leaders work close together with their employees and the employees seem to work independently, thus with the support from the leaders. They let the employees be part of the decision making processes and they take care of the employees skills and knowledge rather than doing everything themselves. Further, they lead the employees through the constantly changing organization and understand that the organization have to develop since the profits have to be reinvested which will lead to further development of the organization.

Abstract:
Tacit Knowledge Sharing and Self-Efficacy are well developed concepts within the academicfields of Knowledge Management and Social Cognitive Theory. The purpose of the study wasto investigate the antecedents and the relationship between the two concepts in for-profit andnon-profit organisations. The study employed Ipe’s model of knowledge sharing to TacitKnowledge Sharing and Albert Bandura’s contribution to Self-Efficacy. A qualitative studywas conducted and the authors collected data through semi-structured interviews which werelater analysed through a process of content analysis. The findings show that sources ofinformation for self-efficacy judgements can be influenced by the occurrence of TacitKnowledge Sharing. Organisations can benefit from these findings by incorporatingopportunities to share tacit knowledge into their working routines, helping their employeescirculate knowledge and increase their sense of self-efficacy

Abstract:

Title: Public attitudes towards the use of marketing and communication by global non-profit organizations

Background: The importance of the non-profit sector and the commercialization in it is increasing. The organizations have to deal with more competition in the fundraising market on the one hand, and they are on the other hand confronted with people who are blocking the recognition of conventional marketing expressions. Guerrilla marketing is seen as a possibility to penetrate the jungle of marketing and create word of mouth about the organization and its activities.

Purpose: This thesis evaluates the public attitudes towards the increasing use of marketing and communication by global non-profit organizations and investigates for which objectives the use of guerrilla tactics in the marketing and communication mix would be accepted.

Limitations: Though the data for this thesis was collected through questionnaires in Sweden, Germany and The Netherlands, there are no country dependent differences investigated.

Theory: Classification of NPOs; aims of NPOs; basic model of communication; dynamic model of expectations; relationship between expectation, satisfaction and donations; marketing mix; guerrilla marketing; viral marketing; live buzz marketing; promotional mix; word of mouth.

Method: Survey with more than 100 participants; interview with the fundraising responsible of Greenpeace Germany

Findings and Conclusions: The public accepts the use of marketing and communication and the therefore necessary expenditures for the purpose to spread the message and gain donators. Openness and honesty in the NPOs’ behaviour are considered more important than the use of less money for marketing and communication. Guerrilla marketing is not suitable for all aims of a NPO, but is accepted in order to spread the message and increase the media coverage.

Abstract:
The non-profit sector is growing, where NPOs compete for scarce resources. Meanwhile, innovation in communication technology requires resources and creativity. Can social media work as an efficient tool for communicating organizational goals and values and how does it enhance trust in NPOs relationship with donors? How do NPOs use ICT and social media in communication to donors and how do they implement functional and emotional communication online?  The research area is approached through a deductive, qualitative, and constructivist perspective. Interviews with two leading NPOs were held, as well as a number of interviews with potential donors. The theoretical framework builds upon Morgan and Hunts and MacMillan et al’s models of trust and commitment. Functional and emotional communication was developed through various theories on online communication. The main findings of this thesis are that Swedish NPOs mainly focus on emotional communication in order to obtain emotional commitment before further developing trust, which is created from functional communication. The investigated NPOs use functional communication to a very little extent.

Kvist, Erica, and Eva Johansson. "Att lära en man att fiska : En kartläggning av hjälporganisationers projektstruktur." Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Handelshögskolan, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-62694.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to conduct a survey of two projects within two Non-profit organizations: Xola Educare in Contribution To Opportunities and Digniti Omnia in The Church of Sweden. The study intends to investigate how the projects deal with the five selected areas of knowledge: project goals, stakeholders, requirements, timetable and communication. The essay originates from the research question of: How are knowledge areas applied to structuring projects in Non-profit organizations? Our starting point for this study is that there are differences in how newly established and already established Non-profit organizations will apply knowledge areas for the planning of their projects. The study also assumes that practice differs from how the essay's theory describes knowledge areas. The study has been conducted with a qualitative method, with interviews and document analysis as a method of data collection for the purpose of mapping the current structure of the projects based on knowledge areas in relation to the theory. Previous research on projects driven by Non-profit organizations has illustrated a trend of inefficiency and unsuccessful projects rather than successful. The project managers' skills and maturity are revealed to play a key part for their success. Knowledge areas have been used to a certain extent but still have a great development potential and need to be adapted to the context of Non-profit organizations.  The survey shows that newly established Non-profit organizations do not use as many project knowledge areas as a more established Non-profit organization does, and that theory and practice differ in these two Non-profit organizations. The survey also shows that reality differs from the theory through shortcomings in structured methodological approaches. Reality does not always match the theory when individuals and projects are changing; they need to follow one another and its context. The survey and the results of the study show that both projects have formulated project goals in document form. The project has not conducted any stakeholder analysis according to the essay theory but has a high level of awareness about its stakeholders. The requirements that the projects aim to meet were formulated at the start of the project. The projects have no structured time plan containing the theoretical project management techniques. Both the projects have structured forms of meeting according to the theory.

Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-298340.

Full text
Abstract:
Problem: Corporate social responsibility is said to result in strategic and reputational benefits, however, broadcasting it publicly has been proven to be a delicate matter. While stakeholders expect companies to engage in CSR, they do not appreciate if companies communicate their CSR-activities too loudly. Prior research instead suggests that communicating too extensively could cause skepticism from stakeholders. Purpose: This thesis is set to investigate how companies view and handle the challenge of communicating their good deeds, in the specific context of cross-sector collaborations, and how companies balance the need to increase awareness of their social engagements with the risk of inducing skepticism. Method: Primary data has been collected from semi-structured interviews within six case companies from different industries. Conclusion: Our results show that skepticism per se was not perceived as a problem – one reason could be that most companies chose to avoid communicating extensively. While all companies argued for the importance of doing rather than talking, controversial companies in particular expressed an aversion towards bragging about their collaborations. A difference between controversial and neutral industries could be seen in the way they valued communication. Having the right level of communication, demonstrating authenticity by linking cross-sector collaborations to company characteristics, together with the choice of partners and communicating “through” NPOs were seen as important aspects that could help companies to find the balance.

This paper attempts to determine the theoretical requirements for a non-state actor to give peacekeepers to a Member state of the United Nations, who would in turn give those peacekeepers to the United Nations. The paper examines two case studies, specifically the contract between Blackwater and the United States Department of State and the SHIRBRIG series of treaties. The paper finds that there is some overlap between a Member state’s needs and a non-state actor’s needs and that there is a theoretical possibility of the donation stated above taking place.

Abstract:
This study examines how democratic organization of operations within Swedish non-profit organizations (NPO) has been affected because of rapid digitalization following covid-19. The study is inductive in nature and aims to study the prerequisites regarding democratic participation during annual meetings. The empirical data that creates the foundation for this research is based on qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey. The selection group studied comprises persons that have acted as chairman during both digital and physical annual meetings, as well as board members and employees within NPO's that have arranged or participated in annual meetings during covid-19. The study shows that there is a correlation between democratic prerequisites during digital annual meetings and the digital competence within the organization. Furthermore, preparations are shown to be more important regarding the democratic prerequisites than whether the annual meeting is conducted via physical or digital platforms. The results indicate that knowledge gained from the digitization of annual meetings during covid-19 could lead to better possibilities regarding participation and equal influence. Empirical data points out a possible future development where the organizations participating in the study will revert to using physical and hybrid meetings when conducting annual meetings. Hybrid meetings, where some participate physically and others digitally, are not to be recommended due to problems regarding equal participation and influence during the annual meeting.

Abstract:

Organisations are different from each other due to a myriad of factors. One of them is motive. Organizations fundamentally operate under two premises: first is to make profits and the second is to provide social services without an explicit intend to make profits. This study mainly focuses on these organisations and explores the compatible leadership behaviours in these organisations. In other words, what different leadership behaviours prevail in these organisations? Major studies in the field related to profit and non-profit organisations are discussed in a comparative way, from leadership, organisational, and employees’ point of views. Moreover, leadership approaches such as situational and major behavioural patterns are discussed in order to have a broader understanding of the topic.

The author of this paper seeks to explore what strategies are available for a multinational organization to manage knowledge, and to what extent a non-profit organization (NPO) have applied the same tools for managing knowledge within the organization as a multinational corporation (MNC). Through studying how knowledge flows within a MNC (Nonaka et al., 1995; Polanyi, 1966; Dani, 2006; DeNisi et al., 2003; Szulanski, 1996) and then analyzing the strategies for handling these flows the thesis will have presented a picture of Knowledge Management (KM), the processes for dealing with learning in the organization, which can then be compared to how KM works in a NPO – the World Bank. Through this comparison, this case study shows that all strategies employed by the World Bank are also used in MNCs, giving us the indication that NPOs can adapt KM strategies from MNCs and face many of the same challenges as an MNC does.

Abstract:
Lean together with Toyota shocked the world when it came out. It turned a devastated company into the top car manufacturer. Ever since, the concept of lean has been implemented in companies outside of Toyota, industries outside of the car manufacturing industry and even in the public sector. The non-profit sector suffers problems of inexperienced leaders and economic problems according to theory which is hoped to be solved using lean. It has yet to be properly been introduced into non-profit organizations which this study aims to do. Previous research regarding an implementation of lean in an NPO is almost non-existing. Few instances where specific problems were solved using lean exist but nothing more. Implementing lean as it currently is does not fit well with the nature of non-profit organizations. Therefore, lean must be translated. To make up for a lack of previous research, the study collected qualitative data in the form of semi-structured interviews of eleven people within NPOs. Information regarding lean was gathered through a literature review. The study discovered that the problem regarding uneducated leaders was existent in most interviewed organizations while the economic problems wasn’t equally apparent. NPOs struggled with wastes due to lack of standardization since unpaid employees mostly help out during their spare time and leaders did not feel they could implement standardization and demands upon them. This and other conclusions constitute the answer to the research question with hopes to be a stepping stone to future research. Further research should focus on how to implement standardization while motivating unpaid employees.

This study examines the strategies four organizations from the voluntary sector uses to manage its cooperation with the State. The study takes its starting point in Staffan Johansson's theory of how imposing a non-profit sector with a homogenization pressure. By investigating various characteristics of the voluntary sector, such as ideology, economic conditions and the possibility of criticism, explores how organizations perceive their role in co-operation. The study shows that ideology and the economic environment plays key role in how organizations can structure themselves both as a organization and their work. In relation to the state, it seems important that resource dependence is not too one-sided for organizations to retain its character, ideology and control over their activities.

Abstract:
Today, the world contains a large number of important non-profit organizations (NPOs) that seek to maintain the welfare of people and animals and to preserve the natural world. NPOs are extremely dependent on funds from the public which has resulted in severe competition between these organizations. This has also come as a result of the cut down of government support and a shortage of donations. Their lack of financial resources indicates that NPOs around the world face major challenges and are therefore in need of customized tools to increase their revenue and ensure their survival. With the purpose of increasing donations towards NPOs, this study aims to research how a media object can be developed and marketed in Bali to motivate tourists into donating money to the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) which is located in Canguu, Bali. By doing this, NPOs can use this research as tool for application within their own organization to increase their revenues. The media object that was chosen for this research was a poster, placed in the streets of Canggu, Bali and was selected because it has been shown that visual communication is a powerful tool for encouraging prosocial human behavior. The aim was to document how the media object affected levels of tourist engagement and ultimately their motivation to donate money to an NPO. A number of theories of motivation and behavior were used to form the foundation for this research. The methodology used included qualitative data collection by way of interviews, observations of local conditions pertinent to tourist interaction with media objects, as well as information gathered through a focus group involving local tourists. Research Through Design (RTD) was the framework that was used to structure the process for the creation and the testing of the prototype (the media object). The RTD included four phases, two of which were not completed due to complications involving the COVID-19 pandemic. The research concluded that the environment, attitudes towards legitimacy and emotional engagement all played a crucial role for the effectiveness and ultimately the success of a media object. Furthermore, it was concluded that there is a need for extended research on tourists’ behavior as well as consumer behavior, in relation to donors, in order to fully understand how a media object should be developed to motivate a tourist to donate money to an NPO.

Abstract:
In the current dilemma of whether non-profits should be structured more or less like a for-profit organization, there are valid points to either side of the argument. By their very nature, these organizations are different when you look at mission, structure, funding sources, tax reporting, and other components. Because of this, experts like Jim Collins (business consultant and author) argue that in order to be great, organizations in the social sectors have to follow different rules or have a different focus than those in the business sector. However, there are also people like Dan Pallotta (non-profit entrepreneur and author) who say that if non-profit organizations adopted more business-minded strategies like advertising, comparable compensation for employees, long term planning and risk taking, they would be more successful. This paper uses personal experience and input from non-profit leaders in the community to analyze both of these perspectives to determine the best way for a non-profit to be run in order to be successful.

Social media has several advantages over more traditional forms of mass communication, but many non-profit organizations (NPOs) are underutilizing social media as a communication platform. There is limited research on social media use among NPOs in rural Appalachia. The current study fills this gap in the literature by examining social media use among NPOs in rural Appalachian Tennessee. We conducted 20 semi-structured phone interviews with NPO representatives (President, CEO, Executive Directors) in an 8-county region of Appalachian Tennessee. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis. Thematic analysis indicated that rurality, organizational capacity, messaging, and social media as a secondary communication strategy were important themes. Fiscal, personnel, and time constraints were limiting factors in terms of NPOs ability to use social media. NPOs used social media primarily to share information with their target audience. While acknowledged as an important feature of social media, NPOs were less likely to use social media to advocate, engage, or mobilize community support. Further data collection is ongoing to confirm these findings and to identify best practices. NPOs in rural Appalachia can use these findings to enhance their communication strategies.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the economic theories on the role on non-profit organizations, their creation, and factors for the size of the non-profit sector. An analytical approach was taken to determine what factors seem to affect the size of the non-profit sector. Firstly a literature review was conducted of the existing, and predominant economic theories relating to the role of the non-profit sector, and several hypotheses where suggested from the analysis of past research. Then an empirical model was created to test the validity of the hypotheses on a cross-national sample, in an effort to deduce what factors affect the size of the non-profit sector.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze and evaluate three non-profit organizations regarding how their sustainability accounting reports have changed and developed between year 2017 and year 2019. The study analyzes how parameters in the sustainability index have been taken into consideration to perceive which parameters are the three non-profits organization’s focal points. In addition, the study will analyze how sustainability accounting reports meet the stakeholder's information needs. Given the prevailing issues and purpose of the study, a qualitative method is relevant to this study. The selection of organizations is based on organizations' availability of sustainability reports for the assessment period. In this study, non-probability selection was chosen, where the selection was made through a preliminary investigation. The study is based on a secondary data method which is a flexible and appropriate approach.   This thesis consists of empirical studies that will help strengthen the quality of the study. The data collected in the empirical data have been analyzed on the basis of the theoretical frame of reference. Frame of reference in this thesis is based on sustainable development, sustainability accounting, Venn diagram of sustainable development, triple bottom line and stakeholder theory. The empirical data in this thesis consists of Red Cross Sweden, Save the Children Sweden and WWF.   Based on the result of this thesis, the parameters under dimensions, environmental responsibility, social responsibility and financial responsibility in each organization have similarities. For example, the environmental requirements for purchasing and procurement are seen in both the Red Cross' and Save the Children's sustainability reports. Another example of similarity that can be seen in all three organizations' sustainability reports is gender equality and diversity. The organization's focus for different parameters in sustainability reports depends on the type of business they have. The development of each organization's sustainability reports in 2017 has been remarkable. Prior to 2017, Save the Children was a pioneer in presenting sustainability reports. While the Red Cross and WWF began to present sustainability reports in 2017. According to their stakeholder analysis, all three respective organizations have included all parameters that are important to their stakeholders. Through their dialogues with both internal and external stakeholders, the respective organizations meet the stakeholders' need for information.

Abstract:
Title: Gender equality in non-profit organizations: Gävle International Red Cross Level: Final assignment for Master Degree in Business Administration Authors: Zhe Chen and Bijun Sun Supervisors: Maria Fregidou-Malama and Pär Vilhelmson Date: 2013-May Aim: The study is to investigate the factors that influence gender equality in non-profit organizations. In order to find out the factors, we choose Gävle International Red Cross as the target organization to do the investigation. Method: The study uses qualitative approach to collect the primary data and interview is the source of primary data. We interviewed seven members of Gävle International Red Cross. As for the secondary data, previous theories are the sources, and we also created a theoretical framework based on those theories. Furthermore, we combine the theories and empirical findings to present the discussion chapter. The orders of empirical findings and discussion follow the theoretical framework. Results & Conclusions: After analyzing the data, we find out that organization, culture, management and government’s efforts are four factors having impacts on achieving gender equality in the target organization. Based on the primary and secondary data, there is no ranking for these four factors and all of them are important for the target organization to achieve gender equality. Suggestions for future research: Qualitative approach is the only way to collect primary data, which is helpful for collecting different opinions from the participants. However, it will be more critical and objective for the study to use both qualitative and quantities approach at the same time. Since seven interviewees have participated, the numbers of the participants can be increased, in order to improve the reliability and validity into higher level. Contribution of the thesis: We organize the theories we used and create a theoretical framework which is useful for connecting gender equality into non-profit organizations. This study can motivate managers to consider gender equality during managing their organizations. Key words: Gender equality, management, non-profit organization, culture

Abstract:
This study investigates the phenomenon of a communal Jewish organization, the National Budgeting Conference (NBC). In essence, the NBC is in charge of allocating money to national organizations through contributions collected from each local community. This unique arrangement doesn't exist in other Jewish communities around the globe; the common procedure is that every local federation allocates money for the local needs.
The objective of this dissertation is to follow the activities of the NBC from a strategic management point of view. So far, almost the entire body of literature on Jewish organizations stem from a political science and an ethnicity point of view. My assumption is that by conducting the study from a management perspective, I have been able to research topics that usually do not receive a lot of attention in literature about Jewish organizations; some of these topics include whether and to what extent environmental elements in the community, as well as power relations, influence the decision-making process. I also focused on the NBC's structure, outcomes, and chances of survival. I concluded that the NBC operates within a very fluid and unstable environment, and as a result, it will have to monitor its interests carefully and adapt in a slow, incremental fashion if it wishes to increase its chances of survival.

The study is on non-profit organizations use of data to analyze and plan projects. It looks at Geographical Information Systems as a tool that could benefit organizations in their data management, project creation, and community collaboration. Case study research was used to analyze three different tree maps created by non-profit organizations. The case studies looked specifically at the organizations’ use of GIS in the data management, project creation, and community collaboration aspects of the maps. By looking at these aspects, it was concluded that GIS is a beneficial tool for non-profit organizations, even on the most basic level. As the organizations become more financially able to afford better software, the GIS capabilities become more beneficial. Non-profits should try to incorporate GIS at any level into their organization.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis describes the non-profit sector in Czechoslovakia in 1945 - 1951 period. In this pivotal period, the independent non-profit organizations were partly revived during the post-war reconstruction, but they have been gradually limited by the state pressure, aiming to achieve their ultimate liquidation. This study examines the causes and transformation tools of the NGO sector until its abolition, as well as their subordination to direct government oversight. This work views the topic especially in terms of financial and managerial aspects of the organizations during this period. Due to the fact that this is an unexplored issue, the theoretical knowledge related to the topic is presented first, and the terminology and legislative developments of this type of organization are subsequently clarified. The practical part uses the example of three socially oriented associations: YMCA, Czechoslovak Red Cross and Charita (Caritas), their specific economic issues and the examples of contemporary management.

Abstract:
This paper investigated trends in social entrepreneurship within non-profit organisations (NPOs). It was inspired by a survey conducted by Trialogue, a non-profit research organisation that surveys corporate social investment in South Africa. The survey showed a significant number of Non-profit organisations (69%) are moving toward developing social enterprise due to issues of sustainability. The research sought to ascertain what are the causes for the trend. The method of sampling used was non-probability, purposeful sampling to select 12 organisations from the available population. An exploratory qualitative study was conducted via face-to-face interviews with 12 organisations and 14 respondents. The transcripts of each were manually reviewed line-by-line for common themes to compare and generate results. The study was undertaken to better understand what motivated NPOs to social entrepreneurship and how they identified and exploited opportunities; distributed revenues and what form of relationship was created with the parent organization. The study reviewed theoretical models and selected a best-fit model of the Opportunity Creation Process which had to be modified to suit the trends in thought that arose from the study. The findings showed that funding challenges of the parent NPO and limited access to funds were key features likely to illustrate when an NPO will move into social entrepreneurship. The research concludes with evidence demonstrating that NPOs are not always willing participants in the social enterprise game, but are forced to discover opportunities to prove to funders that they are seeking means to be sustainable, with varying degrees of success. The form of social enterprise they select is often determined by the centrality of the NPOs mission to that of the social enterprise.

Abstract:
The impact of the global financial crisis, which has its origins in the United States, reverberated through the private sector and brought some country economies to their knees. This highlighted the interconnectedness of world economies. Big companies filed for bankruptcy whiles others were acquired in a bid to avoid total annihilation. Unemployment levels reached terrifying heights. While the world economy was unravelling and the legitimacy of governments was determined by their ability to alleviate the financial pressures their citizens were under; another group was feeling the pressure. However, the impact the financial crisis has had on group has not received nearly as much attention. Although the non-profit sector may not feature highly on the economic scales and matrices; it is part a part of the global economic fabric. It receives funds from governments, corporates, foundations, philanthropists and individual citizens. The size of the donations they receive correlates to the size of the disposable income of their donors. It therefore follows that when the world economy unravelled; non-profit organisations saw a marked decline in the funds received. This paper sets to establish not only how the South African non-profit sector responded to what became a funding crisis for them; but also to test their responsive strategies within the framework of the strategy process. An exploratory research method was used to investigate this problem, and the results showed on the one hand, a spirited sector that has taken the challenge on by adopting more commercial thinking to ensure their financial sustainability. On the other it was found that challenges with a key strategic partner prevailed as well as the challenge of accepting the incongruence of embracing commercial practices vis-à-vis holding deep social mission values.

The private schools play a key role in the educational system; therefore, the normality of the administration and performance thereof relates to the educational quality with the profound influence on the quality advancement of the entire national human resources. Any of the incidents such as the severe abuses or unclear financial flows of private schools will lead to the uncountable loss with the impact on the school administration and the educational rights of the students. Recently, the abuses of the private schools are heard very often; moreover, there is the misappropriation of school assets. What is the cause of the occurrence? After all, does the occurrence of abuses result from the internal control of private schools or any mechanism rather than the internal control? The study employs the private schools to conduct the survey and analysis to inquire the cause of the occurrence and find the possible projects to prevent the abuses along with the personal advices: 1.The Ministry of Education shall include the Board of Directors in the evaluation items afterwards as to enforce the severe control over the key post of schools (Member of the Board) and enhance the limits for the stakeholders of Directors of the engagement of the services at schools; 2.The commission and assignment of the accountants to the private schools shall be conducted by the Ministry of Education instead of the schools on their own as to prevent the abuses under the table between the schools and the engaged accountants; 3.The Ministry of Education shall correct the passive place and shall actively and periodically audit schools as to reduce the abuses of private schools since the prevention in advance is better than the penalty afterwards; 4.The Ministry of Education is advised to propose the policy of the total reduction of 20% for the recruitment of the national colleges and universities; at this rate, the undergraduate admission will be reduced to 77.1% from 97.1%; moreover, the deficiency of the recruitment for private schools can be solved in the meantime. However, the enforcement of the aforementioned policy will result in the high tuition in the future which will become the social cost we have to bear.

Because of rapid changes in national and international affairs, modern governments face more and more complex and difficult questions and challenges in their governance in recent decades. This situation makes non-profit organization(NPO) become more and more important in modern society, especially in some fields, such as environment and consumer protection., government’s functions are being replaced by various non-profit organizations. Non-profit organizations are not only playing important roles in traditionally public affairs, they are also extending their arms into some areas, like culture、education、social welfare、medical care、religion、communication and environment。Their actions and opinions win people’s support and encourage people participate in public affairs. This is impossible for governments to do so. Even they receive people’s good commendation and much donation, non-profit organizations still face many problems in their own operation and management nowadays, especially when government does not have a perfect system to help NPO to run their own organization. NPOs win people’s acceptances, but they still need various resources to make their ideals and ideas come true. They must look for different resources from government and people. How do non-profit organizations win trust、support and resources from government and people has become a serious question to their management team. In this paper, I will focus my research interests on management strategy of non-profit organization, especially on marketing strategy, to see how NPOs can survive in this new century. I will use Delphi Method as my main research method, and I also will choose a local non-profit organization, Taiwan Environmental Protection Union(TEPU), to be my case. After my analysis, I will have some suggestions to TEPU and give some directions to studies about NPO in the near future.

This paper discusses the challenges which are encountered by non-profit organizations in Taiwan currently. A viable business innovation model to solve these problems is proposed and applied to A non-profit organization funded by government (hereinafter to be referred as A Foundation). The results are listed as follows: 1. Current challenges encountered by non-profit organizations include: (1) Government subsidies for A Foundation budget has decreased year by year which has a serious impact on operations in the future. (2) There are certain mechanisms for government oversight of A Foundation such as budget law, government procurement law, the legal representative, etc. It is difficult to break the current situation. (3) A Foundation currently is limited to not allocate surplus. The government prohibits the distribution of profits to the Foundation leaders and members. It is difficult to attract talented people to work for A Foundation. 2. This paper presents the following management strategy models to address the plight of the non-profit organizations funded by government: (1)Non-profit organizations need to position themselves through the core competitiveness. (2) Trying to find out the customer value proposition through the open innovation platform. (3) According to customer value proposition on network platform, the review team will make cost-benefit analysis and feasibility of patent to explore the feasibility analysis. (4) It is very important to protect the market value of goods and services through patent. (5) A Foundation is able to allocate part of the profits from technology transferring and establishment of a market mechanism, and then achieves the goal of independent operations. Finally, this paper suggests that (1) Government decree should be more relaxed and this way Foundation and civil society will be more closely in order to achieve win-win. (2) In addition to A Foundation, the conclusions of this paper can be applied to the other non-profit organizations and government departments.

Public trust of environment is one way for environmental protection and nature conservation which is a system recognized and protected by the laws. According to Article 2 prescribed in Regulations on Permission and Supervision of public trust of environmental protection in Taiwan, public trust of environment means the trust aims to those affairs relating to environmental protection, natural resources needed for recovery and conservation and humane assets needed for valuing and storing. These groups having conservation consciousness and specialties should be commissioned with the way of land environment to protect these shared resources required good management and governance, and achieve the goal of permanent protection under their management. This study explores analysis for public trust of environment promoted by non-profit organization (NPO) and strategy comparison. Literature is used to explore the meaning and connotation for public trust of environment and the meaning for environmental governance, referred to legal systems for national trust in UK, USA and Japan as well as case execution for learning from experiences, combined with case study and deep interview to understand the current operating status and difficulties faced for public trust of environment promoted by domestic NPO, and made comparison with applied strategy. According to the results of empirical analysis, the study concluded as follows: 1. exploration of reasonable regulations from the related parties, essential condition, procedure, supervision and experience of foreign national trust; 2. analysis for the shortage of complete supporting measures and advantage incentive that may cause NPO not to smoothly promote in such difficulties, even Trust Law has been established in Taiwan; 3. well using exercisable tools based on legal public trust of environment, along with promotion of marketing strategy to achieve the most effective methods for the application of strategy for public trust of environment in Taiwan. Finally, this article subject to the results of empirical analysis proposed initiatives for public sector in aspects of legal system and policy as well as marketing application used by NPO, respectively, as future reference for the study regarding the facilitation of public trust system of environment promoted by NPO.

In a society which believes that profitability is the top priority, non-profit organizations have had to focus their efforts to further promote awareness of the issues with which they work. The recent global economic recession and price fluctuations in particular have made the environment more difficult. Against such a background, non-profit organizations need not only to maintain their relationships with external communities and to retain the support of individuals and private business organizations, but they also face the major challenges of promoting awareness of social welfare initiatives among their own organizational employees, developing commitments to corporate social responsibility, and leveraging donation behavior to support the NPO’s effective operation. This study was based on a non-profit, social welfare organization in southern Taiwan, and aimed to discuss the motivation behind making a donation, as well as the factors which impact willingness to make a donation. The samples of the study were employees working in the NPO who have made a donation over the past two years. A printed questionnaire was sent out to 600 individuals, a total of 225 questionnaires were returned, and 160 of these were completed. The effective response rate was 26.7%. The results showed that demographic factors including gender, age, level of education, departments of the organization, marital status, and income would affect the amount of the donation. There was a significant relationship between income and onation-making. Psychological factors including the donation motivation, continual donation, and sudden donation stops by donors within the organization can affect future donation behavior. It is therefore crucial to stabilize donor loyalty in order to ensure the continuous flow of donations. When donors from the organization perceive increased levels of social responsibility, this has a greater impact on donation behavior. Thus, the results suggested that when a non-profit organization practices social responsibility, it is important to provide information to its employees on the kind of social welfare in which the organization is active. Constantly enhancing organizational recognition may encourage employees to make continual donations. At the same time, stable donation resources enable the original vision and mission of the organization to be achieved.

The pay system is one of the most important polices for an organization. How to design an adequate pay system is quite an important, but complex task. The payment is not just to give feedback to the employees who provide labor, but a function to stimulate and manage their behavior to reach the ultimate goal. Therefore, an organization has to consider multiple facets while designing a pay system. The thesis conducts a case study that analyzes the feasibility of pay system for a non-profit organization (C case organization). The study adopts the four-factor model as the analysis base. Research findings indicate that (1) the case organization also uses the four-factor model as the main concept while designing the pay system, (2) the position factor obtains the highest score, health factor is the second, performance factor is the next, and final factor is the technique factor. This implies that a non-profit organization should follow the importance order in their pay system, because doing this will enhance pay satisfaction, and in consequence enhance their job involvement, and (3) the more attention to the position factor and health factor will reduce the turnover rate and the absence, and labor relations can be improved.

From the viewpoint of the NPOs, we explore how the NPOs in Taiwan, employ senior labor force, including their ways of thinking, strategies and applications. We conduct the exploratory collections of data by adopting the case studies of two NPOs providing services for seniors as well as hiring more senior workforce. In addition, we attempt to understand their practical current conditions regarding the application of senior labor force through group panel discussions of experts. By means of the two case studies and group panel discussions, we have discovered the following outcomes: (1) They conform to their objectives by employing senior labor force and confirm that senior employees are equipped with the advantages of serving seniors. (2) Their directors understand the features of senior labor force and discover the proper operating modes by hiring seniors. (3) As assistants, they adjust the senior employees’ jobs, and show concern for their job and mental needs. (4) Their directors assume that the senior employees’ mental adjustment and personality traits are more important than their expertise because the latter can be boosted via proper educational training. (5) They go on with constant innovation so as to offer the seniors job opportunities. Conclusion: Approving of the seniors’ advantages in employment, these two NPOs have succeeded in developing the job design and operating strategies of senior labor force. Thus, we expect to provide enterprises with references on the employment of senior labor force and on the ways to offer seniors professional training.
