Turner, Christopher Gordon. "NPS TINYSCOPE program management." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/5227.
Full textThis master's thesis introduces the program management and concept of operations of the TINYSCOPE Program. TINYSCOPE is a 6U CubeSat designed as a low-cost and easily replaceable imaging spacecraft that can produce tactically relevant imagery data. Tactical requirements in this context would emphasize "good enough" image resolution with a rapid-response tasking loop and high revisit rate. The TINYSCOPE project intends to demonstrate the utility of small, risk tolerant spacecraft for tactical imagery. The program management section of the thesis discusses the relationships of cost, performance, risk, and schedule and the impact of each on the program. The program's successes and failures are examined to glean lessons for future program managers of university projects. The remainder of the thesis develops a comprehensive concept of operations for the prototype spacecraft. Areas of discussion include overviews of the ground, space and launch segments of the mission architecture, and proposed conduct of operations for those segments. Finally, relevant program management and systems engineering documentation are presented as appendices.

Full textThe topic of this dissertation are noun phrases in German and Spanish. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter presents the motivation of the work, and in the last chapter a summary is presented and discussed. In the second chapter, I give an introduction into the theoretical framework, Head-Driven Phase Structure Grammar (HPSG) by explaining its fundamental mechanisms, and compare it to generative approaches. HPSG is a surface oriented, declarative, constraint-based framework. In the third chapter, four central syntactic concepts are critically discussed: head, argument, adjunct, and specifier. Although these four concepts are highly relevant in the linguistic literature, they are often interpreted differently. While discussing these fours syntactic relations, I explain the main mechanisms of HPSG to describe them, e.g. the Semantic Principle and the Head Feature Principle. The fourth chapter contains analyses for three different NP phenomena in German and Spanish: case marking, optionality of arguments, and prenominal arguments. German and Spanish differ in the way they mark case on their NPs. German case-marks NPs morphologically, while case marking in Spanish is syntactic. Both types of marking are modelled and compared. Regarding argument optionality, I first look at the verbal domain and use this analysis to model optionality in the nominal domain. The last part of this chapter gives an analysis of prenominal arguments. The following aspects are considered: combinatory of a head noun with different arguments, theta role assignment for the arguments of a nominal head, optionality of arguments and treatment of (in-)definiteness in prenominal genitives.

Full textThis thesis describes the development of a working thermal model of the Naval Postgraduate School's first CubeSat called NPS-SCAT and the accomplishment of environmental testing that has been completed to date in preparation for space launch. The primary mission of NPS-SCAT is to act as a Solar Cell Array Tester (SCAT), providing data on solar cell performance of various solar cells in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). As part of the satellite development process, a detailed test plan was developed and environmental modeling and testing were completed to test SCAT's ability to survive and function in the space environment. A thermal finite element model (FEM) was developed in NX-6 I-deas to analyze and predict the component thermal response to the space environment. Environmental tests, including thermal vacuum (TVAC) and vibration testing, have been completed using profiles determined by the expected launch and on-orbit conditions. The data obtained from these tests validated the thermal model and proved that SCAT would survive the launch conditions and could successfully operate in the space environment.

Rahmani, Saher. "Élaboration de nanoparticules de silice mésoporeuse et d'organosilice pour des applications en nanomedecine." Thesis, Montpellier, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017MONTT190.
Full textThis work is dedicated to the development, characterization and application of nanoparticles of mesoporous silica (MSNs) and organosilica (PMOs) nanoparicles. Silica nanoparticles became the subject of intense research worldwide for many reasons: their unique chemical and physical characteristics, high biocompatibility, various shapes ranging from spheres to rods with tunable diameter, easily functionalizable surface, and the ability to be used as a shell on different type of inorganic nanoparticles such as gold, iron oxide, lanthanide nanoparticles. In this dissertation mesoporous silica NPs and organosilica NPs have been designed, optimized and fully characterized. These two types of silica NPs have been applied for biological applications (drug delivery and bioimaging).First, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were designed and were covalently coated with antioxidant molecules, namely, caffeic acid (MSN-CAF) or rutin (MSN-RUT), in order to diminish the impact of oxidative stress induced after transfection into cells. Two cellular models involved in the entry of nanoparticles in the body were used for this purpose: the intestinal Caco-2 and the epidermal HaCaT cell lines. Rutin gave the best results in terms of antioxidant capacities preservation during coupling procedures, cellular toxicity alleviation, and decrease of ROS level after 24 h incubation of cells with grafted nanoparticles.Secondly, we studied the control of the shape of MSNs by the addition of ethanol (EtOH) as cosolvent. Spherical (MSNA) or Rod MSNs (MSNR) were obtained, and then loaded loaded with doxorubicin and incubated with MCF-7 breast cancer cells. MSNA and MSNR particles were efficient in killing cancer cells but their behaviour in drug delivery was altered on account of the difference in their morphology. Then, the syntheses of new organosilica nanoparticles are reported. These nanomaterials are exclusively synthesized from bis (triethoxysilylpropyl) amine (BTSPA), bis (3-methoxysilyl propyl) -N-methylamine (BMSPMA) and bis- (triethoxysilyl) ethane precursors. First, it is reported the synthesis of hollow organosilica NPs (HPONPs) obtained through the condensation of bis (triethoxysilylpropyl) amine precursor by sol-gel process. HPONPs were used then for methotrexate delivery in MCF-7 cells. Secondly, it is reported the synthesis of other types of hollow organosilica NPs (HMONPs) obtained through the condensation of bis (3-methoxysilyl propyl) -N-methylamine precursor. In order to enlarge the cavity of NPs, we reported the use of TEB as swelling agent leading to the synthesis of HMLONPs. The morphology and the compositions of the NPs were fully characterized by various techniques and the pepstatin delivery from HMLONPs are under considaration. To add biodegradability to the nanocarriers, mixed nanoparticles were synthesized through the condensation of bis (3-methoxysilyl) propyl methylamine and the bis [3-(triethoxysilyl) propyl] disulfide. Different nanoplatforms were designed and fully characterized. The biodegradability was assessed in near-physiological conditions. Furthermore, the synthesis pathway was modified to design ethylene-porphyrin based organosilica nanoparticles. These nanoparticles were tested in vitro with breast cancer cells and used for methotrexate and gemcitabine monophosphate delivery. Finally, gold core shell mixed organosilica nanoparticles were described. The mixed shell of these nanoparticles was obtained by the co-condensation of bis- (triethoxysilyl) ethane and the bis (3-(triethoxysilyl) propyl)tetrasulfide. These biodegradable nanoparticles were tested in vitro with breast cancer cells for photon fluorescence imaging and core shell NPs were studied for drug delivery

Full textThis research investigates the process required to remediate (cleanup) non-National Priorities List (non-NPL) hazardous waste sites. The research addresses the many laws and regulations on hazardous waste cleanup specific to Department of Defence and Navy processes to correct and remediate existing sites. The thesis gathered data through survey of the seven Engineering Field Divisions within the Naval Facilities Command organization. The survey provided opportunity to cover concerns of representatives currently involved in cleanup operations for the Navy. The research concludes that NAVFAC should actively endorse a broader use of partnering and teams to quicken the remediation process.

Full textThe exposure to Organophosphorus compounds (OPs) during terrorist attacks and military conflicts is a severe threat. The OPs belong to the CWA group, and enter the body mainly through skin contact, rapidly inducing general intoxication and even death of the exposed person. A rapid skin decontamination is the most efficient way to reduce the risk of intoxication. The conventional procedure, including application of absorbent powders and water rinsing, is not very specific. The development of a new and more effective skin decontamination system is an important necessity. The Cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) are promising systems due to strongly retaining toxic molecules on their surface and rapidly decomposing them into less toxic and/or non-toxic compounds, which ensures a concomitant absorption and degradation of the toxic agent. This work focuses on the study of degradation mechanisms of Paraoxon (POX), a model OPs, using CeO2 NPs. The results clearly showed the influence of two physico-chemical parameters of NPs: the shape and the crystal faces, on degradation kinetics of the toxic. In particular, the crystalline facets {111} are found more favorable for the degradation of POX than the faces {100}. The nano octahedra, which is rich in {111} planes, was the most effective morphology for this reaction. Then, decontamination systems were designed using CeO2 NPs in form of powder and their efficiency were evaluated in vitro - ex vivo in a Franz diffusion cell using pig ear skin. The results showed that all the systems significantly reduced the contamination, however the decontamination capacity depends on the type of formulation

Full textThis thesis deals with modal testing and analysis of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Space Truss. A finite element model (FEM) was developed for the truss using a MATLB program called NRLFEMI (developed at the Nava1 Research Laboratory). Analytical predictions of the natural frequencies for this 3.76 meter by 0.35 meter precision structure were calculated using the NRLFEMI code. These calculated natural frequencies were then compared to experimental data collected during modal testing of the truss in the NPS dynamics and Control Laboratory. Through analysis, the predicted results of the measurements (from the FEM) were satisfactorily correlated to the experimentally obtained results, validating the FEM program. Additionally, a technology demonstration of Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors (FBGSs) was performed. These laser etched, fiber optic sensors are ideally suited for real time evaluation of load, strain, vibration, and other health monitoring functions of structures

Full textThe purpose of this research is to determine whether there are differences in perceptions between approving officials (AOs) and cardholders (CHs) regarding internal controls within the Government Purchase Card Program (GPCP) at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). A main component of the research is a voluntary and anonymous online survey deployed to the AOs and CHs at NPS. Results from the analysis of the survey data can be used to identify areas of improvement within the GPCP. Based on the data analysis, there were eight significant differences in perceptions of internal controls between AOs and CHs. They were identified in three of the five internal control components: risk assessment, information and communication, and monitoring activities. The data analysis revealed that AOs generally responded more positively than CHs, implying that AOs may perceive the strength of the GPCP's internal controls to be stronger than the CHs perceive them. In addition, there were survey items to which both AO and CH responded strongly, which included such things as password protection, separation of duties, and adequate fraud education. Both strong and weak internal controls have implications on auditability. The analysis identified potential implications of internal controls, or lack thereof, on auditability within the GPCP at NPS.
Marr, William J. "Using the ST1000/ST725 sonars on the NPS AUV II." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/28634.
Full textAutonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVS) require further technological development in several key areas (including sensor systems) in order to assume a broader role in undersea military and commercial environments. This research was an experimental investigation of the TRITECH ST1000 and ST725 high resolution sonar systems used onboard the NPS AUV II. Test conducted with the ST1000 Profiler proved that the sonar could successfully be used in AUV positioning maneuvers but also revealed the requirement for some form of range dependent gain adjustment to ensure vehicle stability. The ST725 sonar was used in progressively complex static environments to clearly image objects. A scanline analysis of the ST725 data was shown to be useful in extracting stationary target information including range, bearing, and approximate size. AUV, Autonomous underwater vehicles, Sonars

Full textThe purpose of this MBA Project was to provide a creative marketing overview of ideas for launching the 2008 Cadillac CTS Sedan into a non-traditional target market, e.g., perpetual strivers and move-ups. The project included a national case competition among business school student teams, including compressing a communications plan into a 30-slide deliverable. Data collection included comparison literature reviews, male and female focus groups, a researchers-developed survey, and interviews conducted during the Detroit Auto Show. The study team created a new logo for the CTS, including the new tag-line: Revive the Drive. Given the boundaries of a|30M media budget the team designed a media and communications plan encompassing both traditional and non-traditional methods. Additional findings included: (1) the automotive press is biased against American manufacturers which translates into consumer bias; (2) wheels on the CTS are a prime example of past mistakes that apparently Cadillac is not willing to recognize; (3) it will be difficult to break the current brand persona as an older person's car without radically changing the surroundings in both sales outlets and promotional advertising; and (4) simply stated, likely buyers are not classifying the CTS with other similar models from alternative companies.
