Abstract:
After the proclamation of martial law in Poland in December 1981, a Solidarność Coordinating Office Abroad was set up. Led by Jerzy Milewski, the organization eliminated any internal opposition and succeeded in being recognized by most Western partners as the foreign representative of Solidarność. The Coordinating Office received most of its financial aid from trade union internationals and from the United States. Initially, the Coordinating Office was active mainly within international institutions such as the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe and the International Labor Organization. From 1984 onward, the organization sought to influence senior politicians and governments and became an important reminder to the Western world of the Polish crisis, as well as providing financial and material aid to the banned Polish trade union. However, it did not have a definitive impact on policymaking and remained largely dependent on its allied organizations.

Abstract:
Struktury związkowe NSZZ „Solidarność” wznowiły działalność w Kaliszu 14 I 1989 r. Powstał Komitet Obywatelski, który przeprowadził kampanie wyborczą przed wyborami 4 czerwca 1989 r. Działacze związkowi wygrali wybory samorządowe. Mimo to w Kaliszu wybuchały strajki. Some Social and Political Problems of the Members of NSZZ "Solidarity" of the Southern Wielkopolska Region in Kalisz, in the Light of Józef Gola's Letter of March 1992: The South Wielkopolska Region of the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union “Solidarity” in the 1990s was experiencing a serious crisis, as was the case with the entire Union, the number of its members has declined. The trade union structures of NSZZ “Solidarność” resumed their activity in Kalisz on January 14, 1989. The Citizens’ Committee was also established, which conducted a pre-election campaign on June 4, 1989. Trade union activists won the local government elections. Despite this, strikes broke out in Kalisz and recession reigned. Trade unionists struggled with the specter of poverty and unemployment. Józef Gola, in a letter to the III WZD, drew attention to the violation of labor law in the State Theatre under the name W. Bogusławski, problems with completing the construction of the swimming pool, raised the problems of teachers and pensioners. The author of the letter also emphasized the efforts of the Grodzkie Circle of NSZZ “Solidarity” in the fight against poverty and promoted book collections for the Polish community conducted there.

Abstract:
Abstract Apart from considerable public support, the workers’ strike at the Lenin Gdańsk Shipyard in August 1980 received recognition and help from the only organization independent of the communist authorities in the Polish People’s Republic: the Catholic Church. Among its representatives there were some monastery clergymen – monks, of whom there were quite a few in the Gdańsk diocese. Dominican friars of Gdańsk, Conventual Franciscans, Jesuits, Pallottines, Reformists, Oblates and many others joined the activities of NSZZ (Independent Self-Governing Trade Union) “Solidarity” and were involved in one way or another. Their activities concentrated on the trade union and the social movement that was emerging around “Solidarity”. The union and the movement received the support of the monks not only through pastoral care, but also through fundraising, organization, and participation in independent artistic, writing and publishing life, as well as through the help given to the repressed members of “Solidarity” and their families.

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to contribute to our understanding of the emergence and the growth of the Solidarity Movement in Poland in the period of August 1980-December 1981. It is argued that Solidarity can be seen as a "hybrid" movement which combined "traditional" economic and syndicalist demands and "new" concerns with democratization of political life. A number of conducive factors, such as the fluidity and homogeneity of the Polish stratification system, the existence of a young, ambitious and alienated working class, concentrated in large enterprises and the perception of the social order in dichotomous terms, contributed to the emergence of an inter-class alliance of urban segments of Polish society against the political elite, which was widely perceived as being responsible for the acute economic, political and moral crisis of the late seventies. Also, the structure of Solidarity appears to contribute to its organizational and political success. It is maintained that the massive and rapid mobilization involved the activation of pre-existing informal ties among Polish workers. In this context, we also stress the importance of the charismatic leadership of Solidarity, especially that of Lech Walesa. Finally, we partly attribute the success of our movement to the failure of the weak, hesitant and internally divided political elite to contain the Solidarity movement and to respond to the crisis facing the nation.
