Abstract:
Background. The developmental projects, particularly construction of dams, result in permanent changes of terrestrial ecosystems through inundation. Objective. The present study was undertaken aiming at documenting useful plant species in Ntabelanga dam catchment area that will be impacted by the construction of the proposed dam. Methods. A total of 55 randomly selected quadrats were used to assess plant species diversity and composition. Participatory rural appraisal (PRA) methods were used to identify useful plant species growing in the catchment area through interviews with 108 randomly sel

Abstract:
The study aims to map areas sensitive to erosion by water and rainfall erosivity after addition of organic matter (OM) in highly unstable soils. A soil association map was created using digital soil mapping methodology. Soil samples from six soil associations were incubated and analysed for several soil erodibility measures and inferred to the soil association map. Soil stabilization against soil erosion by use of OM was evaluated for 30 weeks under two simulated rainstorms, intermittent rainstorms (IR) and single rainstorm (SR). Rainfall erosivity (R-factor) was calculated from theduration of

Abstract:
Soil organic matter (SOM) plays a primary role in aggregation and stabilization of soils, hence reducing their susceptibility to erosion. In South Africa (SA), most soils have low (< 4 percent) soil organic matte (SOM) contents, making them susceptible to soil erosion. Little is known about SOM quality effects in soil stabilization in the SA context, it is therefore difficult to advocate specific organic matter sources in order to stabilize a particular soil. This study evaluated effects of different litter quality sources (Vachellia karoo (sweet thorn) leaf litter and Zea mays (maize) stover)

Abstract:
South Africa is in many ways a traumatised society and the Bulhoek Massacre of 24 May 1921 in which about two hundred people were killed in a matter of minutes was one such traumatising experience. What makes this massacre special is that the victims were a clearly identi~able christian grouping who dared to question and resist the overpowering might of the state by cleverly establishing an utopian community which lived in a new and resistant time, with counter values and an alternative lifestyle. One of the key ideas which shaped the establishment of this utopian commune by Enoch Josiah Mgiji
