Abstract:

Effective theories have applications in many areas of physics, from Newtonian mechanics through to condensed matter physics. In this thesis we discuss effective field theories in the context of constructing nucleon-nucleon interactions in a systematic and model-independent way. We start with the examination of the spin-singlet P-wave, by using distorted wave methods to remove the effects of long-range pion-exchange forces from the empirical 1P1 phase shift. The divergence appearing in this channel is renormalised using a counterterm that is provided by the relevant (Weinberg) power counting. T

The end of the Cold War yielded a unipolar structure of international politics defined by the military, economic, and political preponderance of the United States. According to balance-of-power theory, which lies at the heart of neorealism, unipolarity has a short life span as secondary states waste little time in rectifying the global imbalance of power. Abstract:
Atomic force microscopes or AFMs are instruments which use a mechanical probe to scan a sample and estimate surface topography with nanometer accuracy. The term atomic force originates from the fact that the imaging process relies upon the existence of the inter-atomic interaction force between the mechanical probe and sample surface. These instruments have established themselves as a vital cutting edge tool for investigation of matter at the nanometer scale. Their widespread usage is due not only to their superior resolution but also because they can operate in any medium namely air, liquid a
