Knowledge of phylogenetic relationships among taxa is essential for comparative and evolutionary genomic research. Here, we report reconstruction of the phylogenetic tree of the genus Gossypium containing cultivated cottons of importance in agriculture by using variation of nuclear repetitive DNA sequences. Genomic DNA was isolated from 87 available accessions of 35 species representing all eight basic genome groups of the genus Gossypium and analyzed to infer phylogeny of the genus and genome origin of its polyploid species. Abstract:
Heteromys pictus-spectabilis is a species complex within the subfamily Heteromyinae (Family: Heteromyidae) that is distributed along the western and southern Mexican coast and surrounding environments. Currently, the species complex is accepted as being 2 separate species (H. pictus and H. spectabilis), but this also renders H. pictus paraphyletic. Therefore, the species complex requires re-evaluation in order to resolve the paraphyly. Mitochondrial DNA sequences from a previously existing ~720 specimen database compiled by Victoria Vance were used in conjunction with new nuclear DNA sequences

Hydatellaceae are a small aquatic family of 12 species related to water lilies, part of the ANITA grade of angiosperms. Our current understanding of phylogenetic relationships in the family comes from several plastid genes and nuclear ITS data. These data sets are generally highly congruent, and lend support to the monophyly of multiple species. However, the published nuclear ITS tree was unrooted (outgroups were too distant to align), and there were several minor phylogenetic conflicts between plastid and ITS gene trees for three closely related species, Trithuria bibracteata, T. occidentalis

The Eastern Cape is regarded as the centre of diversity for Passerina, except for two species occurring in the outliers of eastern Africa. Ten species are endemic to the Cape Floristic Region and four are regarded as near endemics. A complete species-level phylogeny for Passerina utilising sequences from three plastid and one nuclear gene is presented. The loci sequences were rbcL, trnL-F, rps16 and ITS. Parsimony and Bayesian analysis yield identical relationships and two informal groupings are described. Passerina is well imbedded within the tribe Gnideae and not sister to it as previously s

Finally, the gene tree of the true crabs, Brachyura, confirms that the basal "Podotremata" is paraphyletic, with the Raninoidea and Cyclodorippoidea more closely related to Eubrachyura than to the other podotremes. Within the monophyletic Eubrachyura, the analysis supports the reciprical monophyly of the two subsections, Heterotremata and Thoracotremata. All of the Old World freshwater crabs cluster together, representing an early diverged lineage in the Heterotremata.<br>From the inferred phylogeny, we have obtained new insights on the evolution of decapods. The phylogeny of lampreys is controversial, because they possess few taxon-distinctive morphological characters. This is especially true of the relationships among the genus Lethenteron and the closely related genera Eudontomyzon and Lampetra. Thus, the first objective of this thesis was to use DNA sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and two nuclear gene introns to infer the phylogeny among these three genera. I found that: 1) Lethenteron plus Eudontomyzon morii without Lethenteron ninae, Lethenteron zanandreai, and Lethenteron sp. S (a distinct cryptic species in the Lethenteron

Species of the genus Populus , collectively known as poplars, are widely distributed over the northern hemisphere, and well known for their ecological, economical, and evolutionary importance. The extensive inter-species hybridization and high morphological diversity in this group pose difficulties in identifying taxonomic units for comparative evolutionary studies and systematics. In order to understand the evolutionary relationships among poplars and to provide a framework for biosystematic classification, I reconstructed the phylogeny of the genus Populus based on nucleotide sequences of th

Since the human inclination to estimate and trace natural diversity, usable species definitions as well as taxonomical systems are required. As a consequence, the first proposed classification schemes assigned the filamentous and parenchymatous taxa to the green algal order Chaetophorales sensu Wille. The introduction of ultrastructural and molecular methods provided novel insight into algal evolution and generated taxonomic revisions based on phylogenetic inference. However, until now, the number of molecular phylogenetic studies focusing on the Chaetophorales s.s. is surprisingly low. To enh

We sequenced 28 randomly chosen loci representing 10,421 bp; 21 loci were similar to sequences in GenBank. Eight fixed sequence differences were found among Klamath species. Locus 120 contained rare but diagnostic markers for Deltistes luxatus and for Catostomus rimiculus. Locus 4 also contained three rare but unique sites in Catostomus rimiculus. The evolutionary origin and the phylogeny of higher metazoan taxa is still under debate although considerable progress has been made in the past 20 years. Metazoa represents a monophyletic group of highly diverse animals including Bilateria, Cnidaria, Porifera, Ctenophores, and Placozoa. Bilateria comprises the majority of metazoans and consists of three major clades: Deuterostomia, Spiralia (= Lophotrochozoa sensu lato), and Ecdysozoa, whereas the sister group taxa Spiralia and Ecdyzozoa form the monophyletic clade Protostomia.
