Poland, when acceded to GTRI (Global Threat Reduction Initiative) in 2004, has committed to convert the nuclear fuel of the Research Reactor MARIA, operated by the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) in Świerk. The conversion means giving up of high enriched uranium fuel containing 36% of U-235, which was used so far, and replacing it with the low enriched uranium fuel (19.7% U-235). Abstract This paper presents an overview of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in low-pressure (LP) turbine discs through 1993. Disc cracking experience in power plants and pertinent results of research programs are summarized. Analyses of field experiences and laboratory studies conducted in the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries showed that stress corrosion cracking of LP turbine disc steels can occur in pure condensed steam or pure water, as well as in known cracking environments, such as hot hydroxide solutions. Abstract A novel in-situ approach has been developed to deposit noble metals on surfaces of materials commonly used in the nuclear power generating industry. The method involves the injection of a noble metal chemical solution directly into the high temperature water that is in contact with a metal surface to be coated with the noble metal. An effective noble metal coating on a surface can be achieved by maintaining the noble metal concentration at a level of 10 to 100 ppb over a period of 48 hours during the injection process. The original working hypothesis of our proposal was that The “e” subunit of eIF3 has multiple functions from both within the nucleus and in the cytoplasm. Within this model, we further hypothesized that the “e” subunit of eIF3 functions in translation as a repressor.
