Abstract:

A geotechnical evaluation of some soils in Numan, Adamawa, North –East, Nigeria has been carried out. This was done to determine the suitability of the soils for use as sub-grade/filling, sub-base and base course materials for road construction. The samples were collected from five different areas, at surface and sub-surface levels. The areas are New Demsa, Farei, Dowaya, Numan Town and Imbru. Abstract:

Numan town is situated along the confluence of rivers Benue and Gongola and is a road junction town about some 60 km west of Yola. Lithologic logs of 7 boreholes, field measurement data, stream flow and meteorological data and hydrochemical data generated from sampling and analysis of groundwater from 17 points (7boreholes and 10 handdug wells) were evaluated to establish the potentials of groundwater in Numan area. The area receives about 800mm of rainfall annually out of which 80% is lost through surface runoff and evapotranspiration while about 20% goes to recharge the groundwater system. G

This research is aimed at evaluating surface and groundwater quality around the Savannah Sugar Company, Numan, and its environs. The analysis indicated that total hardness ranged from 43.9-91.0 mg/L and DO ranged from 4.2-11.3 mg/L, BOD ranged from 6.6-116.0 mg/L, and COD 10.4-139 mg/L, while Nitrate varied from 4.1-80.1 mg/L.
